Neighboring businesses aim to enhance community feel by Kirk Gollwitzer

Community support is a valued component when opening a business; however, sales revenues drive success. In a single week two businesses in Tryon have opened their doors next to each other with equal fanfare. Melanie Archer, owner of The Ruby Slipper, a dining establishment serving fresh food, fine wines and gelato, held her grand opening Thursday, Sept. 12. On Sunday, Sept. 8, Terra on Trade celebrated their move into the newly renovated St. Luke’s Plaza, with their outdoor lifestyle shop. (businesses 4)

• Dental clinic (continued from page 1)

“We don’t want anyone to go in pain and I think that’s the main thing,” Hines said. “It is to deal with folks who are hurting and they feel like they can’t turn anywhere else.” Start-up funds for the emergency clinic will come from the Rutherford Polk McDowell Health District and the Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry, which partners to run the Collins Dental Clinic for children. Hines said the adult emergency clinic will be sustained through its patients, with the clinic designed to be cost effective while giving patients lowcost treatment for emergencies. To qualify for the emergency dental clinic persons must be a resident of either Polk or Rutherford counties, ages 21 and older, have Medicaid insurance or be uninsured and have a true dental emergency, such as pain that has persisted for days without relief. The health district has hired Dr. Dale McClean out of Hendersonville to be the primary dentist with Collins Dental Center’s Dr. Doug Stroud also working as needed. Hines said the idea for an emergency adult clinic stemmed from calls to Outreach and Collins Dental Center with emergencies. “Since (the Collins Dental Center) has been open the last six years, the priority has been children and we will continue to do that, but from time to time we will get calls from adults with emergencies and on occasion we have been able to help them out,” said Hines. “We want to respond to a community need.” Persons without Medicaid must bring proof of household income and a pay stub. A sliding scale fee will be charged to those without Medicaid. For more information about the emergency clinic or to make an appointment, call the Collins Dental Center at 828-894-3120.

Fall Fest in Landrum presents The Wilhelm Brothers The last in the Fall Fest concerts at the Landrum Library features the Wilhelm Brothers on Thursday, Sept. 19, beginning at 7 p.m. The Wilhelm Brothers - indie folk rock-is a fulltime professional group based in Asheville. Their sound combines the singer/ songwriter talents of Chris Wilhelm with the sonic beauty and skill of cellist Cristof Ensslin. It emphasizes love of a good story delivered in song and employs folk, roots and indie influences. The music is infectious and insightful. This is a quote about the duo from a photo essay by Kelly Devine on Exosphereradio.com and internet radio station: “It’s been said by other reviewers that this duo can move even non-singers to sing along, that they leave you with a positive feeling when they play. That is an understatement. Weaving in stories with the melodic sounds

Heckelman discovers new light with move to Tryon Good Neighbor Kiesa Kay

Six generations of explorers and dreamers handed down the traveling gene to Lori Heckelman, local equestrian and artist. She laced on her traveling shoes and traipsed to Tryon six years ago. “My people have moved so much, and I inherited that adventurous spirit,” she said. “One generation went from Boston to Iowa, and the next ended up in Oregon. We kept moving west till we hit the Pacific Ocean. Nobody planted any roots.” She grew up on an island in the San Francisco Bay, and frolicked in the surf for hours at a time. It was a safer time then, peaceful, and she remembers staying out late into the night with no fear at all. When she met her husband, Bruce, he played a lot of tennis and could wear his shorts to work at a tennis club. Soon, they packed up their VW van and moved to a high mountain valley by a lake in Utah, going from the ocean to a land of snow and wilderness. “I could get on my horse, go out the back gate, and ride all the way to Wyoming,” she said. “I rode six hours out one day and never even hit a fence. It was wide open space, blue sky, a good place to raise kids.”

Heckelman’s degree is in fine art, and when younger, she created wood sculpture landscapes of laminated plywood, with layers upon layers. They looked like rock formations she later saw in Utah. “I didn’t realize until much later that I was sculpting places that I would go,” she said. In 1972, Heckelman began illustrating mathematics textbooks, and her career soared for decades. She did graphic design, editing, brochures and more. “Technical art paid the bills,” she said. “It was a good career path while I was raising my children, but it’s been a long time before I could get back to my art.” The kids grew up. One daughter, with stage name Lux Land, married a rock star. She sings and writes songs in Michigan while raising two children. Another daughter, Melyn, works in South Sudan and Burundi, doing humanitarian work in global health clinics. The Heckelmans wanted a change from the beautiful, muted rock formations of Utah, so they made a demographic study of where to move. They needed a place where Heckelman could ride her black horse, Fury, in the east, but with little snow. Their search led to Tryon, where Heckelman discovered the light that she needed most. “The quality of light, espe-

cially in fall, is so bright and filled with color, almost overwhelming. So many trees bloom with flowers, the mountain laurel, azaleas, rhododendrons, and then in fall, the bright colors,” she said. “Moving here required an aesthetic shift. It’s been a welcome change, so green and lush, a place where everything grows.” As Heckelman discovered this new light, the technical art world changed dramatically. Companies began outsourcing to India. What looked like a career calamity became a blessing, though, as Heckelman rediscovered her passion for fine art. “I paint custom portraits on commission,” she said. “I use

realism, and it’s a holdover, from being an illustrator for so many years, paying attention to the details.” Heckelman paints many different animals from photos or real life, and she maintains special affinity for portraits of dogs. “Dogs are so happy. They love everything,” she said. “Dogs intrigue me because they represent a link to our primitive instincts and the natural world, our wild side. Dogs don’t care about the coffee maker, the lawn mower, the car. They live in the moment, naturally doing what they were born to do.” In Tryon, Heckelman has found time to do what she was born to do, too.

Polk Wolverines win football clash with Landrum, 21-15 by Mark Schmerling

On a clear night, with fans filling stands on both sides of the field, the Polk County Wolverines notched their first win of the season, defeating the Landrum Cardinals 21-15 in a heated rivalry match. The intensity of the rivalry was no doubt a factor with 17 penalty calls and bursts of fierce defense from both squads. After a scoreless first quarter, Polk struck first, then second and third, building a 21-0 lead, before Landrum quarterback

Aaron Bryant turned in some brilliant ball carrying. He eventually scored from the Polk 2-yard line, with 31 seconds left in the half. Bryant then completed a 2-point conversion toss to Jacob Lanning to end the first-half scoring. Polk’s early scoring “built some momentum for us,” said Wolverine Coach Bruce Ollis. “The problem was we finished poorly.” The first half was marked by

big penalties against Landrum, while Polk committed a number of infractions in the second. All told, the Cardinals yielded 92 penalty yards; the Wolverines 61. Polk got on the board with 9:50 left in the second quarter. Facing a fourth and 10 at the Landrum 35, Wolverines quarterback Reece Schlabach hit Jamal Tanner, who took the ball to about the Landrum five. After a personal foul against the Cardinals, the ball was spotted

at the three. Dante Posten carried the ball to within about half a yard of the end zone, before Jordan Smith finished the job. After stopping a Cardinal drive, Polk gained its first twotouchdown lead of the season, when Schlabach hit Tanner again, this play good for 43 yards and a touchdown. Less than one minute of play later, Polk’s Bruce Martin intercepted a Bryant pass, setting up (landrum/polk continued on page 15)

Schlabach’s 13-yard run for the Wolverine’s third TD. Polk couldn’t score again, but came close early in the second half. At the Landrum 33 with fourth and seven, Schlabach hit Smith who made it to the Cardinal 14. Four plays later, Landrum stopped Polk a few inches shy of another first down. Bryant dove his team to the Polk 15, but on fourth and four threw an incomplete pass under tremendous Wolverine pressure. Polk took over, but eventually had to punt. The Cardinals’ Caleb Bruce fielded the punt, lost it and Polk appeared to recover the ball. The officials ruled, however, that the ball did belonged to Landrum at its own 37. This time, Bryant took his team all the way, as he completed a touchdown pass to Jacob Lanning with 6:20 left in the game. John Martinez’s PAT kick made it 21-15.

The momentum shifted to Landrum, as the Cardinal defense smothered Polk’s attempts to move the ball after receiving the kick. A short punt by Schlabach to Polk’s 46 gave the Cardinals great field position, but this time, a fired-up Wolverine defense forced Bryant to throw a fourth-down pass out of bounds. With 2:49 left in the game, the Wolverines had to play ballcontrol offense, and did just that. Schlabach passed and ran the ball to Landrum’s 26 with just over 21 seconds left, then ran out the clock to nail down the win. Ollis also pointed to Tanner’s touchdown catch, and said he (Ollis) “didn’t give up on Jamal after he dropped a couple of passes... He’s a very dynamic player. It was great to get him back (from an injury).” Ollis praised Posten too, who “did a great job at tailback (running for 116 yards).” He also pointed out the importance of Marino’s

three PAT kicks. “There wasn’t any give-up in our players after starting the season 0-3,” Ollis said. “We’ll have all our weapons next week... Winning cures a lot of ills.” Landrum coach Russell Mahaffey said the rivalry between Landrum and Polk dates back to at least the late 1960s before the present larger schools had been formed from smaller, local schools. Mahaffey admitted, “I hate to lose,” a game between traditional rivals, but he heaped praise on his players. “I’m real proud of my team... They didn’t lie down. We came back. We had an opportunity at the end,” Mahaffey said, though he added he was disappointed Landrum did not score late in the game, when a dropped ball helped keep them out of Polk’s end zone. Mahaffey said losing his starting tailback in the second half was also a blow.

“I’m real proud of my team . . . They didn’t lie down. We came back. We had an opportunity at the end.” -- Coach Russell Mahaffey

But he pointed to a highlight of Landrum’s game in Bryant’s stellar performance, mentioning that Bryant grabbed about 350 all-purpose yards, bringing his total in just three games to more than 1,200 such yards. “He’s an amazing kid,” said Mahaffey, “he’s a team player.” Bryant completed 15 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown, and carried the ball 26 times for 131 yards and the first Cardinal TD. The Wolverines are home Friday, Sept. 20 against East Henderson, while Landrum hosts Carolina Academy (of Greenville). Both games begin at 7:30 p.m.

Artist Ann Blackwood makes gourds come to life • Calendar Greenville resident and former Asheville high school science teacher Ann Blackwood began gourding when she saw a hand-carved nativity scene on a gourd in her dentist’s office. She thought, “I can do that!” “I bought a pack of seeds and planted them. The vines grew up every tree and telephone pole they could find. Then, when harvested, the gourds released an awful odor. By Christmastime, however, all the family received birdhouses. “Once I retired, I started purchasing gourds at flea markets. When I became a full-time caretaker for my mother, I began to use gourds as my entertainment.” Now, for the month of September, Blackwood is the featured artist at Thompson Garden Gallery in Tryon. Gourds are natural objects and have been used since ancient times as bowls and storage containers. Gourds can be purchased that are more than a hundred years old — yet they are still useful as well as objects of beauty. There are several tools that make gourding easier. The right choices make all the difference — mini-jigsaws, mini-power tools (such as a Dremel), a wood burner with different tips, and special dyes. The techniques vary and mastering them can be tricky — especially since gourd surfaces are so hard and curve in every direction. And, of course, larger gourds cost more and require more dyes, which are very expensive. Blackwood shares, “I prefer

to make gourds into useful items such as bowls or boxes with lids. One of my very favorite gourds is a bowl that shows an ocean scene with a cut-out turtle as its lid. I like animal and Native American designs the best.” Gourding takes an incredible amount of time — especially since there are numerous cleaning and drying stages.
