2017 Wolverines

Ollis returns to lead Wolverine football squad By Mark Schmerling

“He’s baaack” might describe the return to the head football coach position at Polk County High School, by Bruce Ollis, who guided the team for many fine seasons, including Western Highlands Conference titles. Like Jamie Thompson (who served more than ably as the Wolverines’ head coach for the past three seasons, and returns to serve once again as Ollis’ defensive coordinator), Ollis loves his players, but plays each game to win. Ollis had spent the 2014 through 2016 seasons at T. L. Hanna High School in Anderson, S.C., where he turned around the 4A Yellow Jackets program. Before departing Polk County, Ollis noted that he had the best job in the county. “The transition is easier for me, because of Jamie Thompson,” Ollis remarked. “Jamie did a great job. I think he’s the best defensive coordinator in western North Carolina. The kids love Jamie,” Ollis continued. He’s been there for them. It’s been awfully nice to team up with him.” Ollis said that last season the team was one injury away from a conference win. Ollis’s 2017 team is pretty well balanced 6 TRYON DAILY BULLETIN FALL SPORTS PREVIEW | AUGUST 2017

through the grade levels. He observed, “The guys who are seniors now were rising ninth graders when I left. They’re new to me, and I’m new to them.” With a reduced student base, Polk is once again a 1A school, playing in the 1A/2A WHC. Most players will be on both sides of the ball, Ollis noted. He’s pleased with the team’s work ethic, noting, “You’ve got to show up to grow up! It gives us an opportunity to be successful.” Beyond simply winning games, Ollis looks to give kids the tools to become good citizens This year's Wolverine football squad is led by the returning and good decision-makers. Bruce Ollis (center), who had skippered Polk to many successOllis regards the current ful seasons, before turning around the football program at T. L. edition of the Wolverines as Hanna High School in Anderson, S.C. a “solid team.” His starting quarterback is Dillon Overholt (#9), who earned All-Conference When Overholt releases the ball, look for honors in 2016. him to hook up often with Dillon Knighton “He’ll start as free safety, too,” Ollis (#11), whom Ollis notes is “a very talented added, describing Overholt, a senior, as a receiver . . . very explosive,” and who is also a great runner, and “a dual-threat quarterback.” fine punt and kickoff returner. “He’s on the short list for the Shrine “We’ll have to come up with ways to get Bowl.” the ball in his hands,” Ollis said of Knighton.

POLK FOOTBALL

Polk County's Dillon Overholt, a returning All-Western Highlands Conference honoree and the Wolverines' dual-threat quarterback, unleashes a pass in the Wolverine's August 9 Jamboree against their first opponent, North Henderson.

Another returning all-conference player and a full-time threat for Polk County's Wolverines is Dillon Knighton (#11), who has just caught a pass from Dillon Overholt, in Aug. 9 Jamboree action against North Henderson.

Look for Austin Wilson (a senior, #4) to contribute mightily to defense as a linebacker, and possibly as a fullback on offense. “He’s a big bruiser. He’s hard to bring down,” Ollis remarked. Wilson was All-Conference in 2016. Another stopper on defense is senior and All-Conference returner Devin Panchyshn (#67), who will serve as lineman on both sides of the ball. Ollis described Panchyshn as “a steady, hard working kid,” who lets his actions speak for him. He’s another of Ollis’s returning All-WHC players. He has already squatted 505 pounds in the weight room. Another returning All-Conference Wolverine is senior Braden Miller (listed as numbers 40 and 61 in the early going). “He’ll help us at fullback, but will be on defense,” Ollis said. Though not a returning All-WHC player, the hulking (6 foot 3 inch, 290 pounds) Luke Sellers (#53) has a chance to come on strong for this year (at offensive and defensive tackle). Already, Sellers has bench-pressed 305 pounds, and squatted 475. On August 18, the Wolverines opened the season, hosting Chase, part of what Ollis described as a “very competitive non-conference schedule.” Another of those tough non-conference teams is Pisgah, whom the Wolverines visit on September 22. “We’ll be an explosive team,” Ollis said of the 2017 Wolverines, adding of Thompson, “Jamie will find ways to stop people. The best players” Ollis promised, “will be on the field when the game’s on the line.” Some veterans pick Mitchell County (at Polk on October 19, complete with TV coverage) and Mountain Heritage as two teams to beat in the WHC “I hope Polk County will be named in that,” Ollis remarked. A big change this year is that Hendersonville isn’t in the WHC, and is not on the Wolverines’ schedule. Conference play for the Wolverines begins at Owen High School, on October 6. Regarding the race for the WHC title, Ollis remarked, “Hopefully, when it’s all said and done, we’ll be in there.” • TRYONDAILYBULLETIN.COM 7

Cardinals hope to claim region football title By Mark Schmerling

Landrum’s football philosophy under fourth-year head coach Jason Farmer is straight forward. “Our philosophy,” Farmer said in August, “is to continue to mold young men into strong men in our society, while winning football games.” Regarding the second part of that statement, Farmer proclaimed, “We’ve improved every year.” Indeed, the Cardinals have. This year’s Cardinal squad features a trio of solid running backs, Austin Hutchins (#16), Dalton Kuykendall (#15) and Marcus Quinn (#44). The Red Birds have a new starting quarterback, Michael Clark (#8), who will be a junior. Clark’s primary targets will be Easton Jenkins (#22), Kolbe Pruitt (#12), Jadon Lane (#11) and Cooper Shealey (#4). “We lost a little talent defensively,” Farmer admitted after several graduated, “but we got a little of it back.” Jenkins will provide stopping power as an outside linebacker, with lots of help from defensive lineman 16 TRYON DAILY BULLETIN FALL SPORTS PREVIEW | AUGUST 2017

Jesse Burton (#53) and Quinn, who will play inside linebacker. “Jadon Lane will be a starting defensive back for us,” Farmer remarked. “So will Kolbe Pruitt.” “We’re running a new offensive system this year, Farmer noted. With it, he said the Cardinals’ aim is “controlling the clock, and keeping the defense off the field.” With 13 returning starters (and 13 set to return for 2018), the Cardinals have a nucleus geared toward success. On Farmer’s agenda this season is a goal of “continuing to compete, and win more than we lose.” Last season, Farmer pointed out, the Cardinals were just five points away from the region championship. This year’s goal is “a winning season, and a region championship.” First game this season for the Cardinals is August 25, at Blue Ridge. First home game is September 1, when they host Broome. Cross-state rivalry arrives at Cardinal Stadium on September 8, when Polk County (under returning head coach Bruce Ollis) comes to town. Landrum begins its region schedule on Sept 29, when the Cardinals host Chesnee. •

Easton Jenkins (#22) will serve as a linebacker and wide receiver.
