APPRAISER/AUCTIONEER Sold!

If you’ve ever held an auction, that word is music to your ears. And if you want to hear that word each time you hold an auction, you’ve got to hire a good auctioneer. The right auctioneer can be the key to helping you meet your financial goals if you are liquidating a business, selling off an estate or raising money for a good cause. Auctions can be mutually beneficial for participants and the host. And they are a great way to make a profit. But you’ve got to pick the right auctioneer. Here are a few things to keep in mind when searching for an auctioneer. Auctioneers are specialists, so you want to be sure find the right one to fit your needs. For example, if you’re having an estate sell with a loved one’s valuables and antiques, you probably wouldn’t get the best results with a commercial or business auctioneer. Many auctions are personality-driven events, so be sure you select an auctioneer who is gregarious and personable. This person must have the gift of speech, a touch of humor and the ability to develop a rapport with the audience.

The success of your auction will depend on how much the auctioneer can establish a relationship with the audience. The auctioneer will show your products off in the best light and entice participants to bid. If they have been in business for a while, they will likely have a following that will come to your auction just because of the auctioneer’s reputation. Look for an auctioneer at your local auction house. The best auctioneers are independent contractors with well-honed skills and years of experience getting results for clients. You can also utilize the Internet or your local newspaper to find a qualified auctioneer. Most newspapers have an auction section in their advertising section. If you use the Internet, be sure to visit the website of a certified institution. Not every site lists credentialed auctioneers. If you’ve exhausted these sources, contact the National Auctioneers Association or visit its website at auctioneers.org. Many auctioneers belong to professional

3

How to choose an auctioneer organizations such as the Certified Auctioneers Institute or CAI. Auctioneers with this certification are held to a higher standard of integrity. Sometimes a well-known person can also draw people to your event. Your potential auctioneer should undergo some training in the overall auction process. There are often logistics that must be explained beforehand. When speaking to candidates, be sure to ask for references and work history. Verify licensing and check that they are actively working auction events. Once you have a list of finalists, attend an auction and watch them perform. Pay attention to how they handle attendees and the pacing of the event. Take notes on each auctioneer. Once you have narrowed your list to one or two candidates, perform a background check and obtain reliable references. Then sit back, relax and enjoy the show. Know that your goods will be professionally described and displayed, and will go to a good home. The auctioneer you choose will make sure of this. •

BIRTHING CENTER

F

or pregnant mothers, birthing centers are great options to hospital maternity wards. Birthing centers, an innovative approach to child delivery, are rising in popularity each year. Unlike hospitals, where the arrival of a baby is treating as a major medical event, birthing centers try to create warm, personal and soothing environments. Birthing centers use trained personnel while also seeking to empower women. The mothers are pampered and are able to have a say in the baby’s birth experience. Here are some tips for finding a birthing center. A SPA SETTING The best birthing centers have a gentle, welcoming atmosphere. A good birthing center should be the exact opposite of most hospital settings. You may even feel like you are in a spa, both in the facility’s design and in the way you are treated by staff. It is common for birthing centers to use whirlpool baths to ease your pain during and after labor. There should also be patios and garden spaces to help you relax between con-

tractions. After all, labor is often a long and painful process. Additional services, such as massages, can be extremely helpful. Ask each center about their services before, during and after labor. MEDICAL NEEDS It is vital to ask how many Caesarian sections they typically perform. Some mothers-to-be worry about medical providers who might try to rush the process by sending them to the operating room too quickly. A low C-section rate will ease those concerns. Find out about the medical services and equipment available on-site. A facility may be beautiful and comfortable, but that doesn’t mean they should cut corners around preparation and technology. Ask about services performed at the center and when you might have to be transported somewhere else. You should know the nursing staff schedule as well. It is a major advantage if you can interact with the same nurses from the time you have labor pains until the time you go home with your baby. Finally, check whether your maternity doctor has privileges to work at the center. Ideally, you will want a center that lets your

doctor deliver the baby in person at any time of the day or night. PERSONAL EXPERIENCE Every birthing experience is different. The best centers understand this fact. Look for a facility that will allow you to fulfill your vision of the ideal birth experience. Overly restrictive policies or facilities that can’t fulfill your requests can put a damper on the experience. It is usually best to stay in one room for the entire birth process. Labor, delivery and recovery should happen in one place, without requiring you to readjust to new surroundings. If you have children, think about whether you want them to be a part of the childbirth process. Some centers will accommodate your request. Whether you want to give birth alone or among family and friends, the best birthing centers will work with you to make it happen. The bottom line is, the birthing center you choose should do everything it can to make everyone in your family happy -- including you! The birth of a baby is one of the most wonderful, memorable experiences of life. The best birthing centers will go the extra mile to be a part of that joy. •

BRIDAL SHOP

F

or every bride, the operative word for her wedding day is “perfect.” The perfect wedding. The perfect reception. And the perfect dress. The venue must be inspiring and beautiful, the flowers vivid and the music moving and pleasant. Choosing a bridal shop that fits your needs can save you valuable time, freeing you up to plan other wedding details. Choosing the right bridal shop heightens your chances of finding the right wedding dress. DRESS STYLES Before setting foot in a store, look through bridal magazines, do research on the Internet and attend bridal shows to understand current styles and colors. Study these attractive styles to see if they conform to your taste. Will the style fit your body shape? Will it emphasize the right features and mask the ones you want to downplay? After you have discovered a few styles you like, research bridal shops that have those styles. Some stores might even tutor you on which styles will be flattering on you.

5

How to choose a bridal shop Some shops have ready-to-wear dresses that can be altered, while others make custom dresses. COLOR AND SIZE Wedding dresses are traditionally white, but you can choose different shades of white - like platinum. All whites are not the same, so look for a tone that gives you a natural glow. But you don’t have to wear white. The new trend leans towards brighter colors and simpler styles. As you compare bridal shops, check to see it each store offers a selection of dresses in your size. Curvy women should have many styles available. BUDGET Costs can vary according to the shop, the design of the dress, and the size. Some bridal boutiques will be able to accommodate a wide range of price points. Others prefer to work with a more exclusive clientele. Carefully plan out your budget and do your best to stay within the limits. Many shops will work with you to help you find something you will love that won’t break your finances.

ALTERATIONS Most dresses will need to be altered. You will likely purchase your dress well in advance of the wedding date. Your body may change in the ensuing months. You might have to make multiple trips to the tailor in the days leading up to the wedding. Choose a bridal shop that makes alterations convenient. Most importantly, don’t forget to budget for this service. CONVENIENCE Start by searching for stores in your community. Research local bridal shops on the Internet and keep tabs on your local newspapers. Many bridal shops run ads and coupons and you could save a lot of money on your dress. Some local newspapers have special sections for brides, which include the area bridal shops. HOW MUCH ROOM DOES THE BRIDAL GOWN HAVE? Remember that you must be comfortable in your dress. Weddings and receptions require sitting, standing and even dancing. You don’t want to get a dress, no matter how beautiful, that you can’t move in comfortably. •

CARPET CLEANER

A

clean carpet keeps your home or office looking new and smelling fresh. It is also healthier, with fewer dust particles and mites. But keeping your carpet plush, soft, clean and looking and smelling good requires maintenance. Regular cleaning is a key part of maintenance. A regular cleaning will help your carpet maintain its beauty and texture. It will also minimize or erase the stains on your carpet caused by guests, pets and children. A good carpet cleaning company will be able to remove spots and stains. Experts can revive an older carpet by using special equipment and processes. When they are through, your old carpet will look and feel bright and fluffy all over again. Here are some things to keep in mind when selecting a carpet cleaner: PROFESSIONAL STAFF The appearance and demeanor of the staff will tell you a lot about the quality of their services. Because there are few regulations on cleaning businesses, the professionalism of each company can vary widely. Request proof of their insurance coverage. If the company doesn’t have insurance, you

How to choose a carpet cleaner

could be responsible for any injuries or damage that occurs while they work inside your home. Inquire about whether the company has its own employees or subcontracts cleanings to other providers. Talk to them about their background and any special certifications they have in their industry. CLEANING PROCESS There are numerous processes for cleaning carpets. Chemicals, water, steam and other heavy-duty equipment could all be used. Ask them about their methods. You should understand why they prefer one process over another, and why it is best for your home. If you have children or pets, verify that the chemicals are safe for them. If you are allergic to certain chemicals, be sure to check that they are not using anything that would be harmful. Make sure you check to see how long it will take the carpet to be dry enough to walk on. Some companies use a dry chemical that shorten the dry time considerably. HAPPY CUSTOMERS When you speak to cleaning companies, ask them for references from previous customers. You can also ask people in your social network about carpet cleaning companies.

If they have found a great service, ask for the contact information and get a quote for your own home. You can search online for information about what to expect. Look at review websites to see what customers have said about each business. If possible, contact the Better Business Bureau to see whether there have been any complaints filed about a business and how they were resolved. PROTECTION POLICIES Cleaning companies should have policies in place for protecting your home and guaranteeing their work. If spots return or if you are unhappy with the results, they should send someone back to clean your carpets again at no charge. High-quality companies guarantee their work for a period of time. If the prospective cleaning company gives a guarantee, it is a good indication of their sound business practices. When you find a company with warranties and a spotless reputation, you know you have found a good carpet cleaner. CHURCH

P

icking a church is like ‌ nothing else. There are so many denominations, congregations and sects to choose from. No one knows exactly how many denominations exist but everyone agrees they number in the tens of thousands. And within some of the larger denominations are different subgroups. Each faithbased community is different and attracts a different type of membership. A church is a group of like-minded people who share a set of beliefs, values and norms. In most of the cases, the members feel as though they belong to a large, extended family and offer support, encouragement and emotional and material assistance to each other. Church communities worship and learn together. Growing in faith should be one of the goals in attending church services. The right church can provide a foundation for your spiritual life. It could also be a boon for your social and personal life. When searching for a church, pray to God for guidance. Then determine

7

How to choose a church what setting is important to you. Are you looking for a less-formal, more modern church with energetic sermons? Do you need an intimate community or a mega-church? Do you have a particular faith? If you are a Methodist, Baptist or Lutheran, being surrounded by people with similar beliefs will be important. Or do you prefer a non-denominational church? Once you understand your needs, conduct some research. Look in your local newspaper, Yellow pages, online or drive around your city. Ask friends and relatives about the churches they attend. People are often happy to discuss their experiences with you. Once you have found some possibilities, visit several churches. Attend services with a positive attitude and ask questions of the members. Gather as much information as you can. Sometimes having a friend along will help you feel more at ease. Speak to people sitting near you, or speak to the

pastor after the service. Take home any literature offered. Afterward, reflect on your experience. Does the church’s statement of belief match yours? Sometimes churches are known for their service to the community. If volunteer work is important to you, find a religious community that has programs for soup kitchens, homeless shelters or even local parks. Were you comfortable sitting in the church or were you itching to leave? Did the pastor hold your attention or were you bored? Knowing your values will help you select the right church. Worship and spirituality are deeply personal. Sometimes different family members may attend different churches. When you find a church where the pastor or minister seems to be speaking to you and the congregation feels like family, you have found the place where you will be the most comfortable and get the most out of the experience. •

DENTIST

F

inding the right dentist can save you time and money - even for the most routine dental needs. Picking the right dentist is essential to helping you maintain your health and appearance. A dentist who is reckless, incompetent or unethical can make your life very difficult. No one wants to have a root canal redone because of shoddy work. It is important that you find a dentist who makes you feel comfortable; someone who will help you improve your dental health in a hygienic environment. Finding a dentist near your home or workplace will help you make your appointments on time. When searching for a dentist, make sure the office hours work for your schedule. So, how should you start your search? First, ask your social network for recommendations. Friends, family and colleagues can be a great resource. Searching on the Internet for dental offices in your area will also help. Professionals often have their own websites, which include the backgrounds of those working there. The

Methods for choosing the right dentist website may also tell you about how they handle procedures and appointments, as well as specialized services they offer. Your local newspaper will likely have advertisements from local dentists. Oftentimes you can find specials and discounts. Once you have gathered a list, begin calling each prospective dentist. You can talk to a receptionist or other staff person if the dentist is unavailable. Check to make sure the dentist earned the necessary degree from a reputable school and is current on all licensing and continuing educational requirements. Ideally, he will be familiar with the latest dental technologies and trends. Ask if the dental office provides emergency services. If you break a tooth or need to have a root canal done right away, you will want to use your chosen dentist. You don’t want to have to search for a dentist when you are in pain. Lead time for appointments is another consideration. Some offices might be able to see you right away, while others may have a wait time stretching weeks.

Your prospective dentist should accept your dental insurance. If don’t have dental insurance, inquire about payment plans. The office should give you an estimate before performing any work. When someone meets all of your requirements, visit the office. The staff should be professional and friendly. Every dentist should be willing to answer all of your questions. Some people are afraid of dentists or of pain. If you have any concerns, communicate with the staff and dentist. Many professionals are willing to go above and beyond to help you work through these issues. A basic oral health history should be taken by the dentist or staff. They should tell you about future treatment and prevention options. A quality dentist will help you feel comfortable during your visit. The best dentists offer friendly, happy dental experiences. Teeth are extremely important to your overall health. They can also help or hinder your appearance. Finding a good dentist is like finding a friend who consistently brings out your best smile. •

FUNERAL HOME

L

ooking to make funeral arrangements for you or your loved ones? For most people, that is an unpleasant thought. But planning ahead while you have a clear mind and are not in crisis mode can help you sail through that difficult time when it does come. Since most people don’t have much experience with planning funerals, they are hit with sticker shock when they visit funeral homes. Not only can funerals be expensive, prices can also vary widely. Planning before your time of grief will help you make wise decisions under difficult circumstances. Here are some things to consider when selecting a funeral home: The first step is to find out if the deceased has made any funeral arrangements and whether these plans need to be changed. Sometimes weather may be an issue or other factors may get in the way of what has already been planned. If no arrangements were made, ask family and friends to see if the deceased made any specific wishes. If possible, respect those

How to choose a funeral home wishes. If pre-arrangements with a local company exist, then contact that company. Arrangements bought years ago may not cover the cost of the funeral or represent the latest wishes of the deceased. If you are in this situation, look around to see if another funeral home has a better arrangement, or make adjustments as necessary. To find the right funeral home, ask family, friends and pastors for a recommendation. It is a good way to focus on funeral homes with excellent reputations. You might also consider your own experiences at funeral homes in your city. If you cannot get referrals, look on the Internet. Select three or four funeral homes that might fit your needs. Visit each one with a close friend or relative. Budget is a major concern for most people. Inquire about basic fees. Ask about services the funeral home may offer and if payment arrangements can be made. Ask questions and take notes. Staff members should be patient with you. It is important to get written estimates

for everything. Ask about hours for viewing, in-house versus off-site services, cremation services, additional fees and special requests. The Federal Trade Commission mandates that funeral homes must provide customers with a price list. If you believe the casket prices are too high at one funeral home, you can purchase the casket elsewhere without being subjected to additional charges. Do not decide on a funeral home right away. Think about it for a bit. The decision should be made with clarity. After deciding on a funeral home and type of service, documentation is the next step. The funeral director can help you with the required forms and permits. You should have a copy of the death certificates and make the actual burial or cremation arrangements. When other relatives or friends are involved, it is best to find a funeral home that fits your family’s needs. Talk with them honestly and compare notes. Don’t allow yourself to be pressured into additional services you don’t need or can’t afford. Stay within your budget. •

HOW-TO GUIDE

FURNITURE STORE How to choose a furniture store

F

urniture gives your house a personality and pizzazz. It communicates a message about who you are. Given the array of choices available these days, there has never been a better time to buy new furniture. No matter the size of your budget, choosing new seating, tables and accessories can make a big difference in your daily life. What is your particular and unique style? What do you value most in furniture? Here are some things to consider when shopping around for furniture. QUALITY THAT LASTS Look for a store that sells quality, long-lasting furniture. While inexpensive accessories can be bought cheaply and changed often, big furniture investments -- sofas, dining tables, and the like -- need to be purchased for the long term. That means putting solid construction before a pretty style. Solid construction isn’t always apparent at first glance. It should feel solid, not flimsy, of course. Beyond that, find out as much information as possible about the frame, materials, and what kind of warranty it comes with. A well-trained staff can inform you about their furniture, how they’re built and why the construction matters. The best stores have employees who act as guides and teachers, not pushy salespeople. VALUE, NOT JUST PRICE It is best to pay more for a quality piece than to try to save money on something that will not last in the long term. The bigger the investment, the more important the design and build quality become.

Concentrate on finding the best value. An inexpensive sofa will not be a good value if it is built with cheap and weak materials. Likewise, the most expensive love seat will be a wise investment if the frame is built solidly. It’s best to look for brands with a long track record and good reputation. SERVICE, DELIVERY Every store has a different customer service policy. Choose a store that is well known for being loyal to its customers. Inquire about return policies. Some furniture stores will allow you to exchange an item within a certain time limit if it doesn’t meet your expectations. Learn what fees are involved if you have to return an item -- if that is allowed at all. As well, ask about the store’s delivery policy, including how much it costs, how far they’ll deliver and how quickly your furniture will arrive. If you are comparison shopping, factor the delivery cost when considering different stores. A low-priced couch will not save you money if it comes with an expensive delivery fee. It may be worth it to pay a little more for the couch if free or reduced cost delivery is available. The bottom line is that there are only two things that matter: the quality of the furniture you are purchasing, and the level of service you receive. Once you discover them both, furniture shopping can be a fun experience that that will beautify your home for many years. And you can be happy and comfortable with the furniture for generations to come. •

JULY 2017

HEALTHY FOODS

A

healthy, balanced diet is the foundation for living a long life. Don’t ever underestimate the importance of eating a healthy, balanced diet. You only have one body, so it’s important to treat it right. Doing so means loading it with the right fuel to keep it running smoothly. Many Americans enjoy the convenience of fast food and instant meals. But they are slowly learning that these processed foods have little or no nutritional value. Worse, these foods often leave them craving unhealthy snacks. Home-cooked meals are good for your body and pocketbook. They are cheaper, more satisfying to your taste buds and better for your health. Whether you are preparing vegetables, roasts or an appetizing main course, find a local grocer who stocks only the best products. FRESHNESS Depending on where the food has been grown, produce may be refrigerated and stored for long periods before it arrives at a store. This delay can impact the texture and taste. That’s why it is always best to purchase fruits and vegetables that are harvested before they ripen.

11

How to choose healthy foods Look for foods that are naturally in season, such as apples in the fall or tomatoes in the summer. When buying other items, such as meat, find a store that offers the quickest path from the farm to your dinner table. Beef, poultry and seafood are best when they are fresh. LOCAL It is best to purchase food grown near your home. Buying locally sourced food will help your city’s economy; it is also better for the environment. Food shipped across the country generates carbon emissions. You will pay more for the food because fuel and other costs must be included in the price. It also means that produce must be picked before it has properly ripened. Grocery stores that stock locally grown food are proud of this fact. They are actively supporting their communities. NATURAL Organic foods are a popular commodity. People want foods that are grown without harsh chemicals and pesticides. Studies have found that organic foods are a good choice for

health-conscious consumers. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides dull the flavor of produce. Organic foods simply taste better. Some people think that organic foods are more expensive, but smart shoppers know that you can find organic foods that are affordable and convenient. People who want to find healthier options for meat should find grocers who sell beef and other fare without unnatural hormones. EXPERT ADVICE Look for trustworthy information. There is no shortage of advice, but information is only as reliable as its source. The finest grocery stores have registered nutritionists and other experts on staff. These professionals will help you make wise eating choices. You can also find reliable diet advice and the most up-to-date tips. You may also ask produce managers for their personal recommendations. Quality stores will gladly extend a hand to help you find the best deals. For many shoppers, service with a smile is more important than anything they can find on the shelves. •

HOSPITAL

How to select the best hospital

A

ll hospitals are not created equal. A hospital stocked with ultra-modern technology and facilities and a friendly, competent staff will always be head and shoulders above other hospitals. Before you suffer an injury or become ill, it is important to select a hospital in your area that will suit your needs. By checking their services in advance, you can make an informed decision in the event of an emergency. Here are some factors that can help you choose the best hospital in your city: Location will play a large role in your choice. The hospital should be close to your home or workplace. Some people will only have one hospital in their area. Choosing a facility that’s out of the way will not only add to travel time, it is simply not practical. After all, when an emergency happens, you will need to get to qualified personnel as soon as possible. But if you have a medical condition and an alternative facility farther away specializes in it, that hospital might be a good choice.

You will have to balance convenience with your personal circumstances. Your preferred doctor should have privileges at the facility you choose. Physicians send patients to specific hospitals because it is convenient for them. They are familiar with the site and can use the equipment there. Check with your doctor about where he can work. Insurance carriers will pay some of the cost of services from a preferred provider, including hospitals. Verify which hospitals are in your carrier’s network. If you choose a facility that is not covered by your policy, you run the risk of incurring significant charges. Another consideration is what other features a hospital may offer. For example, a hospital may be accredited with the Joint Commission, an organization that verifies specific standards of care within medical facilities. Accreditation means that they are passing frequent performance reviews. You can be confident you are receiving quality care. Awards and other certifications indicate that a hospital offers consistent care. The

Magnet program recognizes excellence in nursing care and other aspects of hospital work. Not all hospitals are Magnet certified. In fact, this award is only given to a select few facilities in the country. Hospitals often have several areas in which they specialize. For example, two hospitals in the same city may offer care, but one specializes in gastroenterology, while another has an advanced cardiac unit. Choosing the right hospital for your procedure will ensure you receive the highest level of care. In fact, some hospitals will transfer patients to another facility if it has better equipment and specialists. Determining the highest quality hospital for your condition will help you achieve the best outcome during instances of illness or injury. Since hospitals offer a variety of care and service types, be sure to analyze all the options before you decide. By knowing the facts and keeping your own priorities in mind, you will make a wise choice when selecting the hospital that is best for you. •

qualified professional can help prolong the life of your HVAC system. HVAC professionals prevent equipment failure by routinely servicing and maintaining your system. The breakdown of your heating or air conditioning system can be a huge nightmare - particularly during times of extreme temperature. But even in moderate weather, the HVAC system in your home is important to your comfort and safety. Most people cannot tolerate extreme temperatures. The elderly and people with chronic health problems need to have the temperature stabilized in their homes. The best HVAC contractors are helpful and reliable, but a poor contractor can cost you extra money and heartache. Ask people in your social network for recommendations. Good word of mouth will go a long way toward helping you find the best professionals in your area. After creating a list of candidates, call the Better Business Bureau, your state’s board of contractors or the builders’ association to check on their reputations. Your town’s building inspection office may also have information for you. Avoid companies who have many com-

How to choose an HVAC company plaints on their record. Upon narrowing the list, call the remaining ones and ask about pricing, guarantees and warranties. Also inquire about how long it would take to complete a job and the manufacturers’ brands they use. If you are purchasing new equipment, find out if you need a separate service contractor or if routine maintenance and repairs are included in the price of installation. Does the company provide around-the-clock emergency service? High quality HVAC companies are fully licensed, bonded and insured. If a worker is injured or causes damage to your property, that insurance should cover it. Otherwise, you could be liable for the damages. Your insurance premiums would likely increase as a result. Reputable HVAC companies will usually belong to recognized professional and trade organizations. Some well-known organizations include the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute, and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers. Membership in one of these organizations is not automatic. Applicants are required to have certain certifications, meet professional stan-

dards and meet or exceed other requirements before they are admitted. Before any work begins, verify that all the required building permits are in place. Most companies will file permits on your behalf at the local building codes office. But don’t assume that it has happened. Check with the permitting office first. Work done without proper permits could result in a fine and time delay. Have a load calculation done before installing a new system in any building. The best companies perform a thorough calculation rather than estimate. Buildings change over time due to foundations cracking or settling. It will affect the efficiency of any equipment. The HVAC company shouldn’t use the old unit to determine the proper size of a new one. If your old unit was inadequate, you will want to install a unit that is a different size. Speak with your HVAC installer to determine the right size and model for you. Ask your HVAC contractor to perform annual checkups to verify that the unit is running at peak efficiency. With these tips, you can choose a reliable HVAC business that will help you for years to come. •

But in recent years, in-home care has become a viable alternative. In-home care can provide just what you or your loved one needs for a more satisfying and productive life. While many nursing homes provide compassionate care, the move can prove to be expensive and traumatic. It forces patients to leave their familiar environment and belongings. Sometimes, seniors and young people incapacitating ailments can live at home with assistance. In-home care is becoming more common. Patients who need regular attention can still live at home surrounded by family and friends. It is the perfect compromise. Professionals visit the home of the patient to provide services. Not only is it convenient and comfortable, it is typically less expensive than the care offered at a full-time facility. Because it is growing in popularity, many inhome care companies often specialize in services ranging from housekeeping and errand running to daily medical assistance.

How to choose in-home care Talk to your loved one’s primary care physician to help you understand your choices. The doctor can help you select a provider and help you determine the level of care required. This professional may even have referrals to give you. After speaking to several in-home care providers, you can compare the range of services they offer. Typically, they will fall into three categories: MEDICAL CARE Providers vary greatly in terms of the types of medical care they provide. Some may be able to offer 24-hour care while others are better with simple tasks, such as monitoring blood sugar or reminding patients to take medication. Always inquire about the medical qualifications of any in-home care providers you are considering. All workers should have the proper training, degrees and certifications. If you are unclear about the exact level of medical care your loved one will require, ask your physician. The doctor will also be able to tell you what qualifications in-home care providers should have in your situation. PERSONAL CARE Caregivers can help with daily grooming, mobility and any special diet requirements. They can help prepare meals or run simple errands.

COMPANIONSHIP Homebound people often need companionship. An in-home care professional will provide a friendly face and good conversation as well as general care. It might be a matter of reading aloud to your loved one, discussing the daily news or playing a game of cards. Quality in-home care providers understand that patients also need mental stimulation and human contact in order to stay well. Before entering a contract, understand the services that will be provided. You want to make sure you are getting what you need without paying for services that are not required. If personal care is all that is needed, you should not have to pay for medical care as well. Everyone, including you, should be comfortable with the people who work for the company. In-home caregivers will quickly become part of your life, especially as they enter and exit the house. Get referrals from people who have been in a similar situation. The best in-home care provider is about finding the right combination of services. Once you have the right company, the patient will receive companionship, comfort and cost savings that make in-home care such a fantastic choice. •

INSURANCE AGENT

T

he right insurance and the right agent can make your life so much easier. A savvy agent can help save you time and money and give you peace of mind. Shopping for the right insurance agent can be taxing. There are so many factors to consider, including finding a company that offers the right mix of service, coverage and an affordable price. For many, the biggest challenge is how to identify a reliable, reputable agent. Remember that everyone needs insurance coverage. An experienced agent can walk you through various options, keeping in mind your budget and lifestyle. Before choosing an insurance plan, you will need to identify an agent to guide you through the process. Your financial future depends on finding the right person to help you get insurance that will fit your needs. Your family, friends and colleagues have likely worked with insurance agents in the past. Ask people you trust for referrals. If you receive a recommendation, it is because that person has had a positive experience. There is a strong likelihood that you will have similar results. Successful agents understand that offering

Selecting the right insurance agent for your needs

great service will keep them in business. Their careers depend on word-of-mouth. If you are happy with the service you receive, your insurance agent will appreciate your willingness to send business their way. If you do not have recommendations, begin researching your options. Begin by looking at local companies and brokers. Large insurers give all of their agents the same training. Each agent will be subject to the same company policies. In some ways, that can be comforting. However, agents at large companies may lack creativity and flexibility in how they handle their accounts. As you conduct your research, be thorough and critical. Buying a policy is similar to purchasing a new car or home. It truly is that important. Select a company that is highly regarded by consumers. Read reviews of each company to determine who has the most satisfied clients. Are they easy to work with? Have there been any problems with collecting on a policy? Also, check that any prospective agent has all necessary licenses and training. After narrowing your list of prospective agents, make an appointment to visit each one.

Prepare a list of questions and concerns about your personal situation. Take notes during your meeting. Remember that you must feel comfortable with the answers before purchasing a policy. If an agent tries to pressure you into making a decision right away, inform him that you need more time and cannot sign anything immediately. The right agent will let you take as much time as you need to understand the implications of each policy. They will give you useful information and not subject you to high-pressure sales techniques. Your agent should be available. The relationship doesn’t end once the sale is completed. Your dialogue should be continuous. The best agents are available in the event you have to file a claim. Agents who have been in business for many years likely have a good reputation and track record. They understand the policies and will even take extra care that you are properly protected. It is essential that you choose the right type and amount of insurance to adequately protect yourself and your financial future. The policy should be tailored to fit your specific needs. A seasoned, skilled insurance agent will be an invaluable resource for safeguarding your future. •

ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

A

n orthopedic surgeon is just what you need if you have shoulder, hand, joint or knee injuries. Orthopedic surgeons are also the go-to medical professionals for sports injuries or joint replacements. If you plan to have a major surgical procedure on your musculoskeletal system, it is essential to find the best medical professional for the job. Time, persistence and research can put you on the right path to recovery. Here are some tips to help you find the best surgeon for your needs: RECOMMENDATIONS Ask your primary care physician for the names of orthopedic surgeons. Your doctor is the best resource for finding a medical professional who can handle your case effectively. Other medical professionals in his practice might also be able to refer you. It is important that you find a surgeon who specializes in what you need. For example, a man with a sports injury and an elderly person who needs a knee replacement will require two very different doctors. Request information about the sur-

geon’s background, where he attended medical school and where he did his residency. Many orthopedic specialists become experts at performing one or two types of procedures. Keep in mind that the more experience they have with cases like yours, the more likely you will have a good outcome after the procedure. PHILOSOPHY Qualified doctors don’t often share the same philosophy when it comes to medical treatment. Some surgeons prefer having patients try other options -- such as physical therapy, dietary or lifestyle changes -- before performing surgery. Others think it is wiser to do surgery before a problem gets worse. At your initial consultation with an orthopedic surgeon, try to understand their medical philosophy. Think about whether it matches your expectations. The surgeon should make you feel comfortable and confident. A good bedside manner, with excellent knowledge, experience and communication, will make you

feel more relaxed about your health care decisions. FULL SPECTRUM The best surgeons help you with preparation and recovery from your medical treatment. They do more than just perform an actual procedure. They will take the time to answer all your questions patiently and offer practical suggestions to help you hasten your recovery. As well, the doctor will look at your lifestyle to help you become healthier. He will not simply fix your broken or painful body part. Changing your lifestyle and taking better care of yourself may lessen the need for surgery in the future. HOSPITAL PRIVILEGES Surgeons must be allowed to operate in facilities. Different hospitals have different levels of technology and equipment. You will want to have the procedure done at a hospital that is equipped to fit your needs. If you prefer to have the surgery performed at a particular hospital, check to make sure the surgeon is approved to operate at the facility. •

PHARMACY

How to choose a pharmacy

I

n the old days, pharmacies were small neighborhood stores where everyone knew your name and where you could receive personalized service. Sure their selection of medication was small, but the customer service was typically second to none. These days, small independent pharmacies have largely gone the way of the milkman. Now, most neighborhood pharmacies are owned by big corporations. Not only do they carry medical-related products, but they might also have toys, cosmetics and other items. Some pharmacies even have a selection of groceries. Unfortunately, not every pharmacy will provide good, basic customer service. Amid all the products, some places have forgotten about their customers. There are corporate pharmacies that still care about their customers, however, and finding these stores is imperative. When deciding on which pharmacy should service your prescription needs, consider these factors. AVAILABILITY A pharmacy’s hours of operation are a top factor for most people. Limited business hours are not helpful when you are dealing with an illness. Look for a business with convenient hours. Some cities even have all-night pharmacies that will fill your prescriptions in a hurry. Usually, pharmacies that are tied to a corporate chain will stay open late. Smaller, locally owned pharmacies may be open during limited hours, but they tend to provide personalized service. No matter what pharmacy becomes your favorite, always know where you can find a 24-hour location in case of an emergency.

LOCATION A convenient location will make filling prescriptions and purchasing medical products much easier. If you can find a store near your home, work or school, it will save you plenty of time. It is very useful to find a pharmacy that is minutes away, in case you need help quickly. DRUG COVERAGE Does the pharmacy accept your prescription drug plan? Not every pharmacy will accept every insurance policy. Call ahead to inquire about the types of insurance they accept. Paying out of pocket will likely be a huge, unnecessary burden. If you have little to no coverage for your prescriptions, contact pharmacies to ask about prescription discounts. Most pharmacies have generic versions of medications, some of which may be available to you. Between discounts and generic drugs, you could save lots of money. Seniors on Medicare should pay close attention when choosing a pharmacy. Ask locations in your area if they accept your Medicare Part D plan. There are many options available on these plans. It is important that the pharmacy you select is willing to work with your plan to cover the medications you need. SERVICE Customer service is another factor when choosing a pharmacy. Do the pharmacist and staff remember your name? Are they happy to answer questions? Do you trust them? Finding a pharmacy staff that is informative and friendly will make it easier for you to take your medication. It may take some work to find a pharmacy that fulfills these criteria. With a little time and effort, you can certainly find one that fits your needs. •

POOL OR SPA

oing to a spa is indeed a refreshing way to relax. But repeated visits can add up which is why installing a home spa or pool is a great way to feel like you’ve been on vacation without ever leaving home. There are medical benefits as well. Many people who suffer from chronic back pain or circulatory issues find relief in a spa. Contrary to popular belief, home spas have become quite affordable in recent years. As a result, they are also very popular. There are easy-to-install models and even portable ones that you can take with you on vacation. The home-spa industry has worked hard to incorporate innovations, such as ozonators and aromatherapy fragrances. Spas often found in high-end hotels and resorts are now available for the average consumer. You may be able to purchase some of these models at your favorite bigbox or home-improvement center. You can also purchase a home spa with a media center, along with therapeutic

Tubs with water jets will massage muscles, improve circulation, relax nerves and ease pain. The water suspends your tired muscles in weightlessness, allowing them to rest. People with chronic back problems often report relief. Custom spas are also available. You can have it built to meet your specifications. Everyone has a different reason for installing a home spa, and manufacturers are happy to accommodate your requests. At-home swimming pools are another favorite for health-conscious people. These pools are not like your typical inground blue bathtub. Natural stone, manmade waterfalls and landscape detailing will make your pool into a private oasis. Before purchasing your pool, decide whether you would like an in-ground or

aboveground pool. Aboveground pools are less expensive, but many people prefer the durability and overall look of an inground pool. Take time to think about your decision. After all, your pool is a major investment. It will be a part of your home for many years. Consider the landscaping around your pool. There are many possible finishes for the decking alone. You can also choose the materials, style and features. Sometimes the environment around a pool can seem as relaxing as stepping foot in the water. It’s a fact that most people build their dream pool over a number of years as it fits their budget. You don’t have to do everything at once. Just start with a high-quality installation and a vision of what you want the area to become. You can add more features later. With so many advances in home spas and swimming pools, combined with their affordability, it makes sense to install one on your property. After all, wouldn’t it be nice to have your own private resort without the hassle of leaving home? •

REAL ESTATE AGENT

eputation is a company’s biggest asset. So, when the time comes to buy or sell a home you want to pick a reputable realtor and real estate agency. A good real estate agency will act in your best interests. That’s why it’s essential to find a high-quality real estate agency. Ask your family, friends and neighbors for recommendations. Their experiences will guide you toward a reputable agency. What do people say about their services? Once you have a list of possibilities, do some research. Find out how long the agency has been in business. Ideally, you want people who know your community. If the real estate agency is merely a side business, it might not give you the best results. Buying and selling homes is a full time job. Look on the Internet and read customer service reviews. They should also have an impact on your overall impression of an agency. Once you have narrowed your list, contact some businesses and ask them ques-

tions. You should know about their listings, fees and commissions. Choose an agency that has connections with the community, a sharp understanding of neighborhoods that interest you, and solid contacts with other realty companies. This assumes major importance when you’re selling your current house, because the agency usually handles the sale while the realtor helps you find your new one. The marketing strategy and advertising is what makes each agency unique. It will greatly influence the sale of your home. Although most companies might look the same, real estate agencies have a preference for the kind of properties they show or sell. These concentrations might include commercial properties or high-end homes. Try to find a business with a focus that concentrates on selling homes similar to yours. Look at an agency’s listings to see if your home would fit in nicely with their existing clients. If you were purchasing a home, would you find their listings easy to read and informative? The size of the agency will have an

impact on your experience. Small agencies can provide more personalized service, but they may not have the networking advantages of a large company. Big agencies have more opportunities to network and sell your home, but they may have to divide their time among many clients. Be prepared to ask an agency the following questions if you are selling your home: • How will you advertise my home? Will you use the Internet and newspapers? • How many pictures of my house will appear online? • On which sites will my home be featured? • Do you have other homes that have recently been sold in this price range? • How long has the agency been selling homes in my neighborhood? • What makes your agency unique? The two biggest financial decisions you will make in your lifetime are buying and selling a home. Protect your investment and peace of mind by choosing the best and most trustworthy real estate agency you can find. •

SURGEON

T

he quality of the health care you receive depends on many things in addition to the skill of your surgeon. Many health care providers at a hospital will be directly involved in your care before, during, and after surgery. The work of all the hospital staff affects how well the hospital functions. This affects your safety and the quality of the care you will receive there. Hospitals are asked to report events called “quality measures.” These measures are reports of different things that affect patient care. Some common quality measures include: • Patient injuries, such as falls; • Patients who receive the wrong medicine or the wrong dosage of a medicine; • Complications, such as infections, blood clots, and pressure ulcers (bedsores); • Readmission and death (mortality) rates. Hospitals receive scores for their quality. These scores can give you an idea of how your hospital compares to other hospitals. Find out if your hospital is accredited by The Joint Commission (a nonprofit organi-

How to choose where to have your surgery zation that seeks to improve the quality and safety of health care). Check with your insurance company to find out if you may choose a surgeon or hospital or if you must use ones selected by the insurer. Ask your doctor about which hospital has the best care and results for your condition if you have more than one hospital to choose from. Studies show that for some types of surgery, numbers count— using a surgeon or hospital that does more of a particular type of surgery can improve your chance of a good result. If you do have a choice, ask the surgeon these questions: What are your qualifications? You will want to know that your surgeon is experienced and qualified to perform the operation. Many surgeons have taken special training and passed exams given by a national board of surgeons. Ask if your surgeon is “board certified” in surgery. Some surgeons also have the letters F.A.C.S. after their name. This means they are Fellows of the American College of Surgeons and have passed another review by surgeons of their surgical skills.

How much experience do you have doing this operation? One way to reduce the risks of surgery is to choose a surgeon who has been well trained to do the surgery and has plenty of experience doing it. You can ask your surgeon about his or her recent record of successes and complications with this surgery. If it is easier for you, you can discuss the surgeon’s qualifications with your primary care doctor. Find out where your surgery will be done and how often the same operation is done there. Research shows that patients often do better when they have surgery in hospitals with more experience in the operation. Ask your doctor about the success rate at the hospitals you can choose between. The success rate is the number of patients who improve divided by all patients having that operation at a hospital. If your surgeon suggests using a hospital with a lower success rate for your surgery, find out why. The American College of Surgeons (ACS) has information on “When You Need an Operation” that can be found at www. facs.org/public_info/ppserv.html. •

VENUE

L

ocation! Location! Location! Anyone planning a special event, such as a wedding, concert or fundraiser understands the importance of finding the right venue. Homes may not be ideal if you don’t want to deal with a large crowd on your property. And hosting a major event at your home or office could be a hassle. But a classy, well-equipped venue can make your gathering a success. Here are a few things to consider when choosing a location for your special occasion. LESS STRESS Event planning is stressful. You will need a venue that lowers your anxiety level before and during the event. This is especially true of weddings. Whether you or a friend is getting married, you will need an experienced venue staff. The employees should treat you and your guests with respect and grace. Venues can be very helpful with event planning. Top-quality venues regularly do

21

How to choose an event venue business with many vendors. They can give you advice on finding other vendors in your area. They might be able to assist you in the planning phase, which can help you relax as you plan for the big day. CALL THE SHOTS On the other hand, you should control the entire process. Be sure the details are meeting your expectations. When you feel a venue is pressuring you or even making decisions without your consent, end the relationship. You need people who will work with you, not people who only consider what is easiest for them. The theme, style and decor of the event should be your choice. Leave the smaller details the venue’s staff and management. Doing so will free you to focus on important aspects of the occasion. INCLUDED SERVICES Every venue is different when it comes to services. Some places offer hardly any services, while others help you set up and clean up. Placing tables and chairs is time-consuming. Taking down decorations

and equipment afterward can put a sour ending on a fabulous day. Read your contract carefully. Unless you are on a very tight budget, look for a full-service venue that will set up and tear down as part of their pricing package. TECHNICAL NEEDS Your event might require special technical needs. For example, sound and lighting is vital for a musical event. The venue should have the right electrical and audio connections, as well as places to route and hide cables safely. Weddings can also be a technical challenge. The band or DJ will need to have clear sound and a dance floor. Wedding photographers might have preferences about where backdrops and special lighting will be placed. The best venues can help you have a successful, stress-free event. Finding the right place to experience your special occasion will be memorable for you and your guests. •

WOOD STOVE

D

oes your home lack a fireplace? Don’t fret. A wood stove is an excellent alternative to a fireplace. Wood or pellet stoves are equivalent to gas, oil or electricity. If the lights go out, you will still be able to cook and stay warm. Selecting the right stove for your home requires careful consideration. Knowing the differences between wood and pellet stoves will help you make a good purchasing decision. WOOD STOVES Wood stoves consist of cast iron or welded steel. They burn wood to heat your home. People choose steel or cast iron because of the look and cost. The choice of metal has no impact on the stove’s performance. Wood stoves are quite simple. When the wood burns, it produces heat, ashes and smoke. Some people choose to purchase a stove with a catalytic converter. This type of stove makes use of leftover combustibles, reducing emissions and boosting efficiency. A stove without a catalytic converter will still burn wood completely, leaving little ash and smoke behind. It is always best to look for a wood stove with an efficiency rating between 60 and 80 percent. You should understand, however,

How to choose a wood or pellet stove that these ratings are not standardized and are often misunderstood by consumers. It is best to purchase a wood stove from a reputable retailer who will answer your questions honestly and clearly. Before purchasing a wood stove, calculate the cubic footage of the area you are going to heat. You should also know the size of the logs you are going to burn. Sixteen-inch logs are usually recommended because they are easy to stack and manage. The log capacity of your stove should be about three inches longer, or 19-inches total. It doesn’t pay to purchase a cheap wood stove. The internal parts will usually wear out quickly. It is difficult to find a replacement for them. Better stoves consist of quality material. They are covered by a warranty. Understand the terms of your stove’s warranty before completing your purchase. PELLET STOVES Pellet stoves are similar to wood stoves, except they can also burn sawdust, waste paper, wood chips, bark and other organic materials ground into a pellet. Some stoves may also burn corn and walnut shells. The Environmental Protection Agency has

found these stoves to be the cleanest solid-fuel burning appliances. They are often suitable for apartments and condominiums. These stoves are also exempt from EPA emissions standards. Freestanding and fireplace inserts are two types of pellet burning stoves. All of them have a feeder attachment and hopper to feed pellets into the stove. Modern pellet stoves have thermostats and sensors to regulate the speed the pellets go into the stove. It is a way to control the heat output and regulate the temperature. Stoves and pellets are easy to find due to their popularity. Manufacturers provide schedules for product maintenance, which will make your stove more efficient. Purchase a pellet stove based on the size of the home or room it needs to heat, its efficiency rating and design. Wood and pellet stoves are efficient and cost-effective sources for heat. It is highly recommend that a professional install your stove. While a stove is expensive at first, you will soon recover the costs by the money you save on utility bills. And you will continue to save for many years in the future. Not to mention the enjoyment you will get just having a woodstove in the home. •
