Under the coach’s eye by Andy Rhinehart

Trey Thompson’s second-half interception proved a key point in Polk County’s 13-7 second-round 2018 playoff win at North Rowan. But as the final whistle sounded, defensive coordinator Jamie Thompson had no interest in offering congratulations to his junior lineman. But Jamie Thompson, the father, did have a mission to find his oldest child. “He got the interception and he was ecstatic about it,” recalled the elder Thompson, who spends each game coaching from in or on the press box. “When the game was over, we were able to have a few special moments and I could be back in dad mode.” There may be more such moments in 2019 as Trey Thompson gears up for his final season as a Wolverine. He’ll do so looking to build on a junior 8 TRYON DAILY BULLETIN FALL SPORTS PREVIEW | AUGUST 2019

season in which he may well have been Polk County’s most improved and valuable player on defense. Thompson led the Wolverines with 98 tackles, including 25 for a loss, and also had a team-high nine sacks. Four of those sacks came as part of a 13-tackle effort against Avery. He also had both an interception and a fumble recovery, the only Wolverine to do so. Not one to dwell on his accomplishments, much like his father, Trey Thompson credits his junior season to an old-fashioned trait. “I was nervous about being on varsity and starting, and that made me try harder,” he said. “I like to grind all the time to get better, and I guess that paid off.” It’s a work ethic Thompson no doubt learned from years spent at Polk County practices watching his father, the Wolverines’ veteran defensive coordinator

POLK FOOTBALL

who also served as head coach from 2014-16. Trey has long been a familiar sight on the sidelines before ever officially putting on Wolverine blue and white. “I would see the people (on the field) and they were such big guys, and I didn’t think I would ever be here,” Trey Thompson said. “Now I’m here. “(Jamie Thompson) has made sure I get better and that there’s no slacking off. He’s a big part of my work ethic.” The football grinding, though, doesn’t extend to the Thompson household; father and son say they try to leave football on the Polk County campus, though that’s not always simple - “He’s Coach Thompson here and Dad at home. Sometimes he’s Coach Thompson at home because I’m so used to it,” Trey Thompson said. “Every once in a while we might have a hot tub discussion (about football) while we’re hanging out, but we try to keep boundaries as much as we can,” Jamie Thompson said. “I try to treat him the same as everybody else. When you’re a coach, all these guys are like your kids, like your sons, so that helps.” As does his son, Jamie Thompson credits Trey’s hard work with his leap in productivity last season. He has high expectations for Trey for the season ahead, which no doubt also pleases Jamie Thompson the defensive coordinator.

“I think he’ll have a better year,” Jamie Thompson said. “He’s forty pounds heavier, he’s forty to fifty pounds stronger across every lift. He’s got a year of experience. He had a great year in wrestling (reaching the state tournament), so his confidence is really high. “Trey has a tremendous work ethic. He’s a late bloomer a lot like I was. I didn’t fill out until my senior year and he’s doing the same. He’s done a lot of extra stuff on his own in the weight room. He doesn’t need me pushing him.” The younger Thompson would love to turn his success into a college football career, but for now, he’s just focused on helping Polk County have a winning 2019 season. He’ll then set his sights on another trip to the state wrestling tournament before beginning to prepare for his final weeks at Polk County and graduation. Jamie Thompson, meanwhile, is just enjoying one more journey through a season with his son nearby. “It’s been one of the more special things in my life,” Jamie Thompson said. “As a coach with kids, when they’re little you don’t get to spent a lot of time with them, especially during football season. “Since Trey got to high school, he’s here with me all the time. It’s been really special.”

POLK TENNIS Polk County Senior Tana Harris

Experience: The foundation for Senior Success by Andy Rhinehart

Winning a state doubles championship as a sophomore boosted the belief Tana Harris had in her tennis game. That title also taught Harris an equally valuable lesson the following season. “I never imagined winning a state championship. Now it has opened my eyes to trying a lot of things that I didn’t think I could do,” Harris said. “Last season I had to struggle through that I won a state championship, but I can’t go off my laurels. I had to go work hard every day. I lost my number two position (in singles) for a while and I had to work hard to get it back.” Harris, who teamed with Hannah Jenne to claim the 1A doubles title in 2017, hopes to build on the experience of both 16 TRYON DAILY BULLETIN FALL SPORTS PREVIEW | AUGUST 2019

seasons as she enters a senior year in which she’ll likely serve as Polk County’s No. 1 singles player. That’s a role that Jenne filled for the past two seasons, reaching the state 1A singles semifinals last fall and earning Western Highlands Conference Player of the Year honors. With Jenne having graduated, Harris is the frontrunner to fill the lead singles spot for the Wolverines. “If I’m at number one, as I’d like to be, it’s going to be a rough ride. I’ve never played that level in high school,” Harris said. “To follow in Hannah’s shoes is even more difficult. “I’m going to have to face a lot of really skilled players. I don’t expect to win as many matches as in the past, but I’m going to try to.”

That determination, paired with a solid work ethic, has helped Harris become a two-sport standout at Polk County as well as one of the top students in the Class of 2020. In addition to her tennis exploits, Harris also qualified for the state outdoor track and field championships in the pole vault, placing fifth at the state meet in Greensboro, and competed in the state indoor championships as part of the 4x200-meter relay team. Harris, who also plays soccer, credits her older brother for her athletic interests. Tyler Harris was an all-conference baseball player who graduated from Polk County in 2018. “I always did what my brother did. He played basketball, so I played basketball. He played baseball, so I played softball.

POLK TENNIS

He played tennis, so I started playing tennis,” Harris said. “He stopped, but I ended up staying with it and loved it. I broke away from what my brother used to do and started doing what I liked.” Juggling tennis and academics hasn’t been easy for Harris, one of Polk County’s junior marshals last year. But she admits that the same drive that pushes her on the court also fuels her efforts in the classroom. “I feel like I’m kind of a perfectionist,” said Harris, who hopes to pursue a career in engineering. “That makes me competitive. I want to get better at things every time. I’m always working to get A’s, and so far I haven’t gotten a B my entire high school career and not I’m not about to start. I work hard at whatever I do, school or sports. “When I’m studying, I put down the phone and focus until I get things done. There were times on the bus last year where I had to do my homework. But I just make sure I get it done and I don’t get distracted. I don’t like staying up late, so I try to get things done.” And, usually, do them very well. TRYONDAILYBULLETIN.COM 17

Sophomore Kara Knight DOING IT ALL by Sam Robinson

Kara Knight is a sophomore at Landrum High School that competes in sports year round. Kara competes in Volleyball, Basketball, Weightlifting, and Soccer, and has a strong competitive nature that propels her to challenge the upperclassmen for her place on several of the Varsity teams. “My

26 TRYON DAILY BULLETIN FALL SPORTS PREVIEW | AUGUST 2019

competitive nature drives me to compete for my position, in every sport I play, I want to be on the field or court as much as possible.” Kara doesn’t just participate in sports at Landrum; she competes to the fullest of her ability any chance she gets. Last year, Kara was a part of the JV volleyball team that went undefeated in the region winning twelve straight games. She was also an important contributor to the JV basketball team that went undefeated in the region (8-0) and finished the season with a 15-3 overall by being the lead scorer, netting 132 points and assisting on 53 occasions. Last season, Kara was the top scorer for the varsity soccer team (22 goals) that finished fourth in the region and made it to the second round of playoffs. In the state weightlifting competition, Kara placed second in her individual weight class, her efforts were rewarded as the Cardinals went on to be named the State Weightlifting Champions. Kara has won individual honors for her athletic performances on multiple occasions. Kara was awarded the Offensive Award for her performance on the varsity soccer team. In addition to second place honors at the State Weightlifting meet, she was awarded Rookie of the Year for the team. She has also been named the Landrum High School Athlete of the Week award for her exploits on the soccer pitch. Of all of the sports that Kara plays, soccer is the one where she truly feels at home.

TRYONDAILYBULLETIN.COM 27

“I enjoy soccer the most. I have been playing it the longest and I feel that it is my best and most successful sport. I also feel most confident when I play soccer compared to my other sports.” Despite the incredible success she has already achieved, Kara is eager to push herself further in the upcoming seasons. “I am hoping to definitely improve in every single sport I play. I also hope to become more confident and be a better leader in each sport I participate in. Specifically, I am hoping to score more goals in soccer, more points in basketball, more digs in volleyball, and I want to perform well in state for weightlifting.” The coaching staff and her parents are big influences on Kara’s academic and athletic performances. “My parents support me by being at every game I play in, driving me to every game and practice I needed to be at, and also making sure I am staying ahead and succeeding in all of my classes.” “My coaches are definitely big role models in my life. My coaches push me to be better not only on the field, court, or weight room, but in life. They teach me and my teammates to be better people, not just better athletes.” While Kara is only a sophomore, she already has her sights set on playing at the collegiate level one day. One college that stands out to her is North Greenville University because of her families’ history and connection with the school, Kara’s mother is a NGU alumni and her older brother is currently enrolled there. “I think I would like to play soccer in college. It is my favorite of the four sports and I can definitely see myself playing it for many more years. I think I would like to attend North Greenville University because I think it is important to have a strong connection with the Lord all the time, but especially throughout college. I believe NGU will most definitely keep me connected to God.”
