“We won state two out of the three years and second one year,” Betzel said. “It was doing all of those things and the camaraderie from those shared experiences that really grabbed me.” Getting to know his peers in the program also drew him to consider a life of military service. “I’ve given it a lot of thought and I’d like to have a full military career if I like it. I’d definitely like to focus on aviation and fly helicopters but also get an electrical engineering degree so I’d have something as a backup,” he said. To be accepted to West Point a student must maintain a high level of academic performance, excel athletically, receive a nomination from a local congressman or state senator, be medically qualified and be between 17-23 when you enter. Betzel said he may not be the

fastest cross country runner, for example, but he is a cross country runner who is second in his class, has taken AP classes, was in Beta Club and on Student Council. Last year, Betzel attended the summer camp held at West Point with 499 other students. He said he’s honored to be accepted to the school and be able to join some of the people he met on campus this year. Before that time arrives, Betzel plans to head on vacation with family and spend some last minute quality time with friends. He leaves Landrum June 30 to report to West Point on July 1.

Hall's future to focus on the past by Samantha Hurst

Landrum High School graduating senior Alyssa Hall wants to stretch her boundaries as she heads into life after high school. And the interesting thing is her future could include a big focus on the past. She’ll start small at first, crossing the South Carolina / North Carolina border as she heads off to college at Warren Wilson in Asheville. “It’s kind of different, it’s small like Landrum is and it’s an agricultural school,” Hall said of her college choice. Hall said she hopes to pursue a career based in the fields of anthropology and archeology. Paleoanthropology particularly interests her because, “it’s weird and different,” she said. If Hall continues her interest in anthropology and archaeology, Warren Wilson will be the right place to do so. The college began its archaeology program in 1966 and 12 years ago focused a large portion of the program on the Berry site, a 16th-century Native American town where a Spanish fort was built. Hall said her interest in relics

of the past was sparked after a summer trip last year. “I was in West Virginia last summer and my friend and I were on the side of the river and we started digging – we didn’t find a lot other than shells and layers of clay but the possibility of finding something was exciting,” Hall said. “I began researching it ever since then and feel that is the only thing that really interests me.” She participated in AmeriCorps wherre she tutored young children. That experience has piqued her interest in going to Africa as a Peace Corp member. “I’ve always been interested in Africa. Their culture is really different than ours and there are a lot of ways to serve people there that need help,” she said. “If I do that I’ll be able to travel, which is really exciting to me.” So Asheville isn’t as foreign to Hall as Africa might be but she’s looking to that new experience as well. “I had never been to Asheville before I went to tour the school but it feels like a really interesting place,” Hall said. “I’m looking forward to learning new things and meeting new people.” Eventually, Hall said she thinks she’d like to become a

college professor and teach anthropology. She knows that means a lot of schooling and a lot of work – things she’ll think about after her last summer vacation as a high

school student. “I’ll miss the teachers a lot. Landrum is such a small school that we all have close bonds with the teachers,” she said.

Pace, who turned 19 years old on May 29, said she hates shopping, so she can get anything in the Polk County or Landrum area that’s where she’ll go. She said the thought of opening her own store happened one day when she saw a Girlie Girl Originals T-shirt that said, “I may dress cute, but I can shoot.” She thought to herself, 'you can’t buy any(Continued on page 15)

Ben Stockdale by Leah Justice

Don’t forget the name Ben Stockdale. It could very well be on a ballot some day for a local, state or national election.

Stockdale received a full scholarship to N.C. State University (NCSU) where he will begin in August. He was selected as a Park

16 – T ryon D aily B ulletin : G raduation S pecial E dition , 2013

Scholarship recipient, which is allotted to just 45 students per year to NCSU. Stockdale is the senior class president and the president of the student body at PCHS. He said he hopes to be involved in student government at NCSU as well. He certainly has the background for student government as he participated in the N.C. State Senate Program and was one of only two delegates statewide selected for the U.S. Senate Youth Program in Washington, D.C. He plans to major in either business or political science. He and friends, Will Trakas and Mason Umlauf, started what is known as the Blue Crew at Polk County High School to bring students together. Every student is a part of the crew. Stockdale said he is excited to be working with other students right now in order to carry on the Blue Crew for years to come. “I’m really excited to see it not die down,” said Stockdale. Stockdale also played tennis and basketball at Polk County and was a member of the Green Team, for which he wrote a grant to the Polk County Community Foundation for the school to install low flow toilet handles. He and Alec Philpott led the Special Olympics held at the high school this year for the first time in several years. Jane Ollis was the

organizer and Stockdale said it was a huge success. Stockdale will also likely graduate next Friday, June 7 as salutatorian of the 2013 Wolverine class. Many students also know Stockdale for his musical talents. He plays drums, the guitar and sings. He will spend his summer working as a camp counselor at Camp Henry in Canton, N.C. where he will likely teach percussions and basketball. Stockdale grew up in the military and lived in many cities prior to settling in Tryon in the seventh grade after his father retired as a colonel. He lived in Ohio, Washington, D.C., Alabama and Missouri, prior to coming back to what he calls home. His grandparents retired to Tryon years ago so Stockdale had frequently visited the area. “I’d been visiting Tryon since I was little, so it feels like home to me,” Stockdale said. He said Tryon and Polk County is a special place and he would not have been able to accomplish the things he has in any other area. “All the things I’ve been able to do is because of how supportive Polk County has been,” said Stockdale. “To have those kinds of resources and people, you don’t find that everywhere. Polk County really is a special place.” Stockdale is the son of Lee and Gail Stockdale of Tryon.
