Sometimes the sweltering heat of summer can lead us to get creative on how to stay cool, or how to keep children entertained during the long break from school. My family has been known to create our own “splash zone” in our yard - complete with slip and slides, wading pools, and water squirters. We’ve also developed our own board games that engage the creative spirit as well as our brains, all while making another opportunity for quality family time. Creativity is everywhere in our Foothills. Our August issue focuses on a few of the creative souls that call this beautiful area home.
This month, we meet with Tracye Doubek, a top-notch horse trainer here in Tryon. Her farm, Renovatio Farms, serves as a base camp for her many creative endeavors. Trayce competes in equestrian events, teaches, works on the farm, and maintains a working relationship with an international saddle maker. On top of that, she now designs her own clothing line. Next, we visit Phil Garrett’s art studio in Mill Spring, where he continues to produce world-renowned art with a focus on printmaking. Garrett is an internationally known artist who has had a storied career. Born and raised in the Carolinas, he now lives and works here once again. Do you find yourself struggling to get a good night’s sleep? In this edition, we spend time with Rebekah Delling, owner of Hypnotic Massage and Sleep Boutique in downtown Tryon. This “sleep whisperer” has developed her own unique methods to ensure restful deep sleep for those who struggle with all sorts of sleep-related problems. All this and more can be found in this month’s issue of our area’s only monthly lifestyle magazine. We hope you enjoy what we’ve put together for you, and as I do each month, I encourage readers to reach out and help us share your story. Email me at jeff. allison@tryondailybulletin.com with any thoughts or ideas for upcoming issues. As always, thanks for reading!

rayce Doubek is a woman of many talents At a young age Doubek, owner and operator of Renovatio Farms in Tryon, was more than just bitten by the equestrian bug. She was bitten by an actual horse. Her mom, Sherry, tells the story of a three-year-old Trayce sneaking off in the Illinois winter to visit a neighbor’s pony and being found later with the pony’s teeth marks on her tiny shoulder. Trayce says, “I was deadset on winning the affections of that little carnivorous fellow.”
And every other horse and fourlegged friend has been lucky to cross her path since that moment.Heryouthful determination to work with horses shows in how she has successfully built world-class credentials as a competitor, trainer, and teacher during her lifelong journey in the “horse business,” all while creating new dreams and goals along the way. She describes her life as blessed, giving the lion’s share of credit to those who have supported her on her journey, especially to her biggest fans, her parents, Dave and Sherry. Hers is a close-knit family, made even closer after the loss of her older brother David to cancer. It is clear her love and aptitude for what she does, along with her family and friends, have helped her to succeed and survive the ups and downs of both the horse business and life. Trayce says her childhood was “the best a horse-crazy girl could ask for.” Growing up in Wayne, Illinois, a town similar to Tryon in its immersion in equine culture, she was able to work odd jobs in various barns until she finally convinced her parents to give in and purchase her first pony, Brandy Flash. Her father and neighbors helped build her first perfect little dollhouse 2-horse barn, and while her father regrets not putting a golf club in Trayce’s hands at a young age, it’s obvious his early investment in his daughter’s interest in horses has paid dividends.Thoseearly days of her career are still reflected in her work nowadays. In her first horse show, Trayce’s beloved horse Betamax had stomach issues, and she couldn’t get on him. There she would find an early mentor and teacher in Anita Wright, becoming a working student for her. “I’d do anything to earn my two lessons a week. (Wright) was an excellent teacher and a beautiful rider and had so much patience with my young horse. She believed in him and me, and we virtually never lost a dressage test in the eventing world.” She would eventually take on the role of teacher and mentor herself, often teaching sixty lessons a week during her college years, and taking on active leadership roles in numerous local and national riding clubs even in her late teens. “Currently, I have the most dedicated and exceptional bunch of ladies in my barn. They are family. I love every aspect of teaching and training. When you do it virtually every day of your life, you have to be very creative. I have a Rolodex of analogies I have gathered over the last thirty years, which makes having a Bachelor’s degree In Education from the College of Charleston invaluable. You learn

how to explain one concept in fifty different ways. I’m very much goal-oriented and love trying to assist my riders and the horses I train to achieve those goals. It’s been a lifetime of collecting feathers for your cap. I learn something about myself or my horses every single day.”
Dressage, which Trayce competes in and teaches, is “the art of riding and training a horse in a manner that develops obedience, flexibility, and balance.” The translation could be used to define her home base, Renovatio Farms, which she came to after years of renting and outgrowing stall space in the Tryon area. “God gave me a cookie when I got Renovatio Farms.
The name Renovatio means rebirth in Latin and came from an Ewan McGregor film which, for some reason, it stuck with me, and I said if I ever owned a farm, that’s what I would name it. And so ITraycedid.” has over two hundred plus photos of rainbows taken on her farm in the twelve years of ownership. “The sunrises and sunsets are simply magical. I’ve had A LOT of hard days, personally and professionally, but sitting on the back porch watching the sun go down over those mountains has melted many a worry away.” She describes a typical day at Renovatio Farms using another film reference, comparing it to Groundhog Day. “I have a fifty-acre twenty-two stall operation. So I am the CEO of the manure pile, supply orders, vet, farrier, dental, bodywork appointment maker, bill payer, stall cleaner, scheduler, rider, trainer, lesson giver, mower, bush hogger, maintenance crew, and chaos coordinator. On top of that, I rep for a saddle company out of
the Netherlands called MacRider, have a small shop, and just created another business building and equestrian clothing line. I’ve also designed a training tool and have a friend (Knickknacks and Such) helping with production and the sale of that. I move and think a lot.”
Her working relationship as a rep for MacRider Saddles, a top European saddle maker, began in 2014. “I was introduced to Henriette and Luc Beikmann via another trainer. Not only was I sold on the quality and craftsmanship of the brand but them as people. Henriette is one of my closest friends and a master at what have access to it all.” Trayce’s competitive career has as many stories as trophies on her mantle, so of course, she chooses a more recent accomplishment to highlight, even over being nationally ranked and numerous other achievements throughout her career, competing at the highest expression of horse training. “So many personal highlights in my career, but I guess most recently is on my horse Lisandro. He was deemed the North Carolina Dressage and Combined Training Champion in 2020 for lntermediare, which was spectacular for me. Literally, amidst Covid, we all adorned face masks at

Trayce’s dogs, especially her corgis, rule the roost and can often be seen being chauffeured about by golf cart, keeping an eye on Trayce during her daily routine. “Well, I can sum it up in about a sentence. Anyone who meets my dogs says they want to come back reincarnated as one. They have the life of Riley.” Her career has recently taken a creative shift with Sui Generis, her personally designed equestrian clothing line. “So Sui Generis is also Latin, translated as ‘of its own kind,’ an expression that promotes a brand of uniqueness of its own. I’m a bargain queen, so I searched the web for months for every detail of my outfits from head to toe. I thought, what if I could take an existing coat and give it a makeover. I’m by no means a seamstress, but I definitely have enough skill to sew embellishments on. So then I began to look for fabrics and buttons from literally all over the world. I have probably 200+ in stock pieces in virtually every color from France, India, New York, Istanbul, England, etc. Almost every piece is one of a kind. I have estate pieces for stock ties and buttons that are over 100 years old. I’m working on eleven coats at the moment. It’s a blast. It took me days to come up with a name and logo. I’m weird about stuff like that. It has to feel right in all aspects before I represent it.”“My first actual designed piece I debuted at the 2021 Divermentos and Dressage at Motlow Creek to Benefit Brooke USA. I rode to the William Tell Overture and did a costume change mid-ride. It was a hoot. I’ve graciously been asked to ride again in this year’s benefit, which will be held at Tryon International Equestrian Center on October 20, for which tickets go on sale July Contact1.”

P hill Garrett, an artist who specializes in printmaking and painting, currently produces world-class art at his studio in MillAsSpring.ayoung man, he enjoyed the act of drawing, but he did not immediately see it as a career. He sketched and painted in his early years, taking an example from a neighbor that painted as a hobby. This influence led him to say to himself at a young age, “I canSooncreate.”after finishing his undergraduate studies at the University of South Carolina, Phil would join the navy, where the young man from Taylors, South Carolina expected to see the world. Little did he know that the majority of his travels would result from being a professional artist.
The Wade Hampton High graduate would end up taking some of his first drawing classes during his time serving in the Navy while stationed at Pearl Harbor. He began taking drafting classes at the Bishop Museum and, before long, was taking classes at the Honolulu Academy, a school founded by the Hawaii Museum of Art. There he discovered printmaking in a class taught by renowned printmaker Gabor Peterdi in Peterdi,Hawaii.afamed painter, printmaker, and WWII veteran, learned printmaking in France and would become one of the more influential teachers of the art form in the United States.

After the Navy, Phil would take on San Francisco in the seventies. Making use of the GI Bill to attend the San Francisco Art Institute, one of the oldest established art schools, and where Ansel Adams founded the first fine art photography department. At SFAI, he would continue his education in painting and printmaking, earning a BFA, all while rubbing shoulders with some of the finest artists of the counter-culture. He even had a chance encounter with the late great singer Bing Crosby, who was a customer at the do-it-yourself frame shop Phil was working. His framing skills led Garrett to believe he would be a journeyman framer when he returned home to Greenville, South Carolina in the late seventies. He found work in a frame shop on Laurens Road. At the same time, Garrett continued to work on his painting. Eventually, joining several other artists to start their own gallery, the Reedy River Works, on McBee St. He would also continue to evolve his printmaking skills, working on several monotype series featured in the Greenville County Museum of Art. Monotypes would become synonymous with Phil’sMonotypeswork. are a form of printmaking created by drawing or painting on a smooth, nonabsorbent surface, then the image is transferred onto a sheet of paper by pressing the two together, usually using a printing press. Phil has even recently taught classes on No Solvent Monotype Printmaking at the Greenville Center for Fine Arts. His resume as a printmaker would continue to grow with stints collaborating with printmaking shops in Charleston, South Carolina, and Alburquerque, New Mexico, and having his work appear in
galleries across the country. He honed his skills over the years, earning the title of Master Printer.In1998, he found King Snake Press, allowing Phil to further showcase the monotype print’s versatility. The Press located in Greenville became his main studio and allowed him to do print collaborations with other artists interested in the creation of monotypes. King Snake prints can be quickly recognized by Phil’s chop, his stamp which resembles a snake, on each print. He would continue to paint and teach printing, eventually teaching internationally when a friend in San Francisco introduced him to the Golden Acrylic Educational Program, where he would soon become an instructor - a role he still retains today.Phil’s association with Golden, a paint company founded in the early 1980s by venerated paint maker Samuel Scotch Thistle Variation Monotype Phil’s Ghost Variation IV Monotype

In October 2005 and 2006, he lectured and taught workshops on Acrylic Painting Methods in Art Schools in the cities of Osaka, Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto, and Fukuoka, Japan. All his trips were sponsored by Golden Acrylic and Turner company of Osaka. In the Fall of 2010, Phil would go on to teach an eight-week concentration at The Penland School of Craft, a nationally known center for craft-making education and training located in North Carolina. He still finds time to give Golden Acrylic Demonstrations, which are two-hour educational indepth presentations of the various acrylic paints, gels, and mediums manufactured by Golden. He also conducts numerous other lectures, including a Williamsburg Oil Color Lecture, a class that covers topics essential to learning oil painting, and often teaches courses in printmaking at the Greenville Center of Creative Arts and all over the Carolinas.Phil would eventually leave Greenville for Santa Fe, New Mexico, a city known the world over for its thriving and vital art scene. The city stands out thanks to the tremendous diversity of art styles and varieties, including Native American, Hispanic, South-Western, and folk art. There he would continue his work while taking advantage of the outdoors to produce numerous Plein air paintings of the magnificent scenery surrounding his new home. Recently, Phil has returned to the Carolinas, settling in Gowansville, to be near family. At the same time, making his studio in Mill Spring, at the Mill Spring Agriculture Center. Phil describes why he chose his present studio location, “I needed a separate studio space near Gowansville. I liked the high ceilings, open Phil’s Ghost Variation I Monotype
space, and good light for painting in the old school building, and the drive here gives me a chance to contemplate my day in the studio.”Once in the studio, Phil explained his painting technique “I start with a colored ground called an imprimatur. It can be a warm or cool color. Usually, the subject gives me a clue about which color to use. I proceed with thin layers of paint and build up to thicker layers leaving parts of the colored ground exposed. I also use transparent glazes over all or part of the painting to create mood or intensity. I want my paintings to feel spontaneous and energetic, but I often work and re-work the surface many times before I feel it is finished.”
His work is available online at philgarrett. com, and the studio is open for visit by appointment.
Recent Plein air work from New Mexico
Phil’s work has appeared in numerous private and public collections, galleries, and museums, including the Bank of America and the State museums of South Carolina and Hawaii. Phil explains what has sustained him in his more than fifty years of creating art, “I find inspiration in nature. My work is informed by a kind of mythical nature. The power of storms, the spiritual quality of the elements, the beauty, grace, and ferocity of plants and animals.”

F or some, sleep is just an elusive dream. How many times do you find yourself counting imaginary sheep jumping over the moon, or staring for what seems like hours at the ceiling? Maybe you find yourself roaming from room to room to kill time until you can muster up enough exhaustion to pass out for a precious hour or two of sleep before the alarm clock goes off? And, of course, let’s not forget to mention the kiss of death to a good night’s sleep – one last look at the phone to check messages, social media or anxiety-inducing news feeds. We’ve all been there,So,right?what if there really is a way to sleep better? No, not a magic potion, but a set of tools and techniques that work to prepare you for what you crave and what your body needs – a good night’s sleep.Meet Rebekah Delling. She is a sleep whisperer of sorts. Well, more like a sleep sage who continues to perfect the art of catching ZZZs at Hypnotic Massage and Sleep Boutique, her studio and wellness shop located at 112 N. It’s a combination of sleep coaching and massage modalities,” says the licensed massage therapist surrounded in her shop by a vast array of sleep-centric aids like essential oils, light reducing masks, dream journals, lotions, dream catchers, hand-blended herbal teas, and more to help restless souls soothe their bodies and minds in the pursuit of restful bliss. “Sleep coaching starts with clients doing a holistic sleep assessment, in advance, that provides a road map of their sleep history, bedtime routine, sleep hygiene and their overall health history.”

In addition to the sleep massage, she also offers a more traditional deep tissue massage and a not-so-traditional equine massage that focuses on specific problems riders might encounter after spending hours in the saddle.“You are going to have a much better experience with your horse if you are loose and not in pain,” says Delling, who sees more and more equestrians in the area turn to her equine massage as they learn about and experience her services. “Your muscles are at your prime, you can control the horse more efficiently, your riding and your relationship to your horse is all going to get better when your body is Evenpain-free.”within these other modalities, Delling believes Equine massages tailored specifically for the rider address the aches and pains felt after hours spent in the saddle.

Unlike more traditional forms of massage, Delling says the client stays fully dressed for the sleep massage. Once on the table, the massage involves a lot of rocking, deep rhythmic pressure and repetitive movement. Delling says the idea is to engage the parasympathetic nervous system which controls the body’s ability to relax.

Just how big of a problem is the lack of sleep in America? It is such a common problem that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) declares it a public health epidemic. Columbia University researchers say teenagers are in a “Great Sleep Recession” and Gallup’s State of Sleep in America 2022 report finds the number of hours of sleep has plummeted for American adolescents and adults.Delling also believes sleep is a national health crisis and everyone should be concerned about it because of potential health implications. She says that sleep depravation can increase the risk for diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and may cause emotional suffering in the form of loneliness and anxiety. Delling says the rise in anxiety is one of the main drivers of sleep dysfunction. “You’re certainly more likely to stay asleep if you go to sleep more calmly,” says Delling. “Sleep dysfunction is typically a secondary issue. There’s usually a primary issue such as depression, anxiety or pain. Massage can help to ease these issues.”Delling also realizes that sometimes the levels of moderate anxiety and/or depression are untenable through massage, and she will suggest clients seek the help of a licensed psychologist to better cope with issues that are beyond her scope of practice. One of the more interesting aspects to sleep Delling says, is the rise in technologies like Fitbits, Apple watches and other wearable sleep trackers meant to aid people in their ability to sleep more soundly. “When your brain is engaged and active it’s less likely to shut off,” says Delling. “Better sleep starts with a ritual. It’s the process of preparing yourself holistically for a healthy night of enrichment, healing and regeneration.”
For some this feedback is extremely helpful she says, but for others these gadgets have the reverse effect by increasing levels of anxiety for those who use sleep trackers and apps. She said if you find yourself anxious over low sleep scores or fretting about what to do, start by taking a break from the apps and focus on calming yourself and your routine before bedtime.
Better sleep is attainable, and the healing hands at Hypnotic Massage and Sleep Boutique may hold the keys to unlocking the perfect night’s sleep for you.
The Saga of Daniel Morgan APPOINTMENTS
O
ne of the first colts saved by HERD, Daniel Morgan, we named after the famous American Revolutionary War hero who fought on January 17, 1781, near the town of Cowpens, South Carolina. The battle was a turning point in history for the American Revolution. Today in the heart of downtown Spartanburg, on Morgan Square, one can visit a bronze masterpiece of Daniel Morgan. The statue was erected in 1881. The renowned sculptor John Quincy Adams Ward created it. The monument commemorates his valor and victory at the Battle of Cowpens. Morgan was one of the most respected battlefield tacticians of the American Revolutionary War of 1775–1783.Itisaquirky connection, but a HERD Board member, Elaine Freeman, assisted in raising the funds needed to restore the bronze statue. This good deed has enabled Daniel Morgan, adorned in backcountry buckskin and commanding sword, to gaze over the square for more generations of historians to enjoy. Our equine Daniel Morgan had clever tactics of his own as well. At the tender age of six months old, in March 2016, he found himself separated from his mother. He was sold to the highest bidder at an auction in Vale, NC, and came into a crowded, dirty cattle yard in Green Creek. The buyer had discovered a new business while the cow market was soft. He was acquiring cheaply priced horses, or those listed as free to a good home, in the local newspapers. Once he built a load of 50 to 60 horses, he shipped them in livestock trailers to Oklahoma. From there, they were transported to a terrible fate in Mexico. Any equine age six months and older is fair game to go to slaughter across the border. Young Morgan was easy to spot in the livestock yard as he was wearing a tight orange woven halter. He had wisely befriended a black and white spotted saddle horse in the same pen. She kept the larger bullies away from him. With her mothering nature, it was clear to us she had recently weaned a foal of her own. Her milk bag was still present. My mistress, Heather Freeman, was at the lot to pick up a severely injured paint gelding we later named Cherokee when she spied Morgan and his protector. She inquired about the price for both the tobiano paint colt, Morgan, and the spotted saddle mare. Heather promised to be back with her horse trailer and funds to buy them later in the afternoon.Themare came to be known as Lois Lane, as she joined our first HERD rescue horse, Superman, after quarantine. Morgan would in turn grow up just down the lane at Kim and Christen Oliver’s Edge Brewing Rescue Barn. The use of this facility was donated to HERD, to provide new incoming equines with a place to grow up and receive training.Morgan enjoyed his adolescence with other youngsters at the Edge Barn, By Pebbles

Both were a bit older and left HERD ahead of Morgan to become consistent winners at horse shows and dressage events. Make no mistake about Morgan’s talents. He is a smart horse, no question about it. He has a way of looking right through you if you are not being honest with him. He accepts your undivided attention when you are within his inner circle. He is athletic, capable, and brave. He also needs a rider who can keep him busy as he enjoys new challenges. Once Morgan had two plus years of groundwork under his girth and was backed to ride, a local family adopted him. He found himself in the ribbons alos, like his former stable mates. He exceled at hunter’s paces. However, his owner decided she needed a horse with more experience for young children to enjoy. Morgan returned to HERD. Next, the handsome young paint gelding tried his hooves at fox hunting. Jenny Lamb, who was responsible for the fox hunters where Morgan went to live in Athena, Georgia, loved him. However, he was too forward a horse on the hunt field for the novice riders at the barn she managed. They leased mounts for the hunting season and did not ride year-round. So once again, Morgan returned to us. A woman located near Charlotte thought he might be a good dressage mount for her. She took lessons with her trainer on Morgan; his movement was excellent, but alas, he was not her ideal Morganhorse.was a bit too clever. He has a very distinctive, big personality. He is an in-your- Paige Bassett and Morgan have a clear connection

40 LIFE IN OUR FOOTHILLS pocket kind of horse, and still a playful youngster at heart. What Morgan needed was a young rider who was as bold, clever and game-on for new challenges. This was clearly what the young horse enjoyed. Foster trainer Beth Harrill agreed to take the handsome gelding back under her wing. She took him to an eventing weekend, and he was brave and performed well at every obstacle on the cross-country course, in the dressage ring, and at the stadium jumping effort. She asked herself if she should hold on to him and compete him for a while since he is so talented. A young horse, with enormous talent and a good mind, Morgan is easy to manage if his rider focuses on him. When one demands his presence and asks for an exceptional performance, the rider must give him undivided attention. Then, a wonderful turn of events happened in June. The Bassett family in Summerfield, SC, was looking for a quality eventing prospect for their daughter Paige. Morgan had the looks, ability, and gusto to be a worthy match for their talented young equestrian. The two new partners had an instant connection.Weallhave our hooves and legs crossed that savvy Morgan has finally found his perfect match. May Morgan be Paige’s southern hero for years to come, as they stride their way to the championships.
