elcome to Polk County and Upper Spartanburg County, the area known as the Foothills, in the beautiful Thermal Belt region. With gorgeous views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, our area offers a breathtaking setting in which to live, work and play. This is the 26th edition of the Come See Us Almanac, and it aims to assist you in connecting with a variety of resources you might need, whether you’re new to the area, or even if you have lived here your whole life.

ON THE COVER In 1971, I returned home from the Marine Corps and went to work with my brothers, Preston and Sheldon. For 18 years, we built both residential and commercial buildings carrying on the quality craftsmanship of our father, John Francis Mintz. In 1986, after earning my General Contractor’s License, I started my own business, Don Mintz Builders, LLC., specializing in custom homes, log homes and rentals. LIBRARIES

Stony Knoll Community Library Founded by Della Jackson on Aug. 24, 1937, Stony Knoll Community Library is unique in that it is the first and only institution built by African-Americans for African-Americans in North Carolina in the 1930s. Jackson’s major goals were to promote literacy and to encourage a better way of life. The library was an outgrowth of an adult class funded by the WPA in 1937. Classes were held in a room rented (for 50 cents weekly) in the home of Rev. J.D. Jones, the pastor of Stony Knoll CME Church. The students, who were eager to learn, wanted to share their books with others. As books and magazines were donated, they shared to start libraries in the six black schools in the county. These books supplemented the worn and outdated textbooks available to black students at the time. Located on Fox Mountain Road in Mill Spring, the library today contains old-fashioned school readers, classics, curiosities and various old and valuable books and sets – about 80,000 volumes in all. There is also a small historical museum. Visitors are welcome; call Evelyn Petty first at 828-894-3984.Visit stonyknollcommunitylibraryinc.weebly.com.

EQUESTRIAN SERVICES With wide-open green pastures surrounded by beautiful rolling mountains, Polk County provides a picturesque backdrop for horse enthusiasts to set their lives and hobbies against. The equine industry is a major factor in the area’s economy and recreation. The temperate climate of the area well supports a flourishing equine community, which is conducive to yearround riding. ‘Tryon Horse Country’ is recognized nationally, as well as internationally. Other small businesses benefit from the equine community as well, by providing goods and services. Among these are truck and trailer sales, real estate, barn buildings, pasture management, feed sales, training and instruction, insurance, veterinary care, equine hauling, tack, clothing, accommodations and equine retirement facilities. The county’s trail systems (Foothills Equestrian Trail Association, Collinsville Equestrian Trail Association, North Pacolet and other systems), provide approximately 300 miles of trails and are nationally recognized. Polk County and upper Spartanburg County offer a unique package in that most other horse communities do not provide both equestrian competition venues and a trail system. EQUESTRIAN FACILITIES

Trade St., Tryon, N.C. 28782 Tuesday - Saturday 11 a.m.-5 p.m. 828-859-2828 upstairsartspace.org Upstairs Artspace is a nonprofit contemporary art gallery in downtown Tryon, exhibiting two and three-dimensional art and craft by leading

artists of the Southeast, and particularly, the Carolinas. The Upstairs has a long-standing reputation for art that is sometimes experimental, often avant-garde and always collectible. Their artists are usually established in their careers, but they also welcome the emerging artist whose work is impressive for being fresh, innovative and challenging. The Upstairs was founded in 1978 in the upstairs bedroom of a local artist. Today we occupy a handsomely renovated building with over 3,000 square feet of exhibition space in three separate galleries. The exhibitions change every two months and are typically developed around a theme. The organization features a strong schedule of programs designed to educate children and adults through tours, lectures, workshops, demonstrations, films and classes in local schools.
