HOOP’s Antiques and Vintage Collectibles Where the Old and New Worlds Meet

F

ollowing a successful career in the U.S. Army, Colonels (Retired) Scott and Karolyn (“K”) Hooper have enjoyed their first year of business success in downtown Tryon, N.C. Transitioning from a career in the military to owning and operating a retail shop has been quite a change, but one they have embraced. They credit their military experiences for preparing them to face any challenge. The inspiration behind the HOOP’s trademark logo originated from the Hooper family name, who hailed from Cornwall, England. Back in the day, the Coopers made the barrels, and the Hoopers made the bands (or hoops) that held the barrels together. Hence the name HOOP’s with barrels in the logo, and the extensive collection of artisan products made from barrels that can be found in the store. In HOOP’s you will find a wide variety of items and gifts for the home. From new and antique furniture, an extensive collection of Polish pottery, the latest in trendy home decor and whimsical small gift ideas, HOOP’s strives to have something for everyone. They carry a unique collection of rustic and farmhouse style lighting fixtures and wall decor along with the works of local artists, to include the beautiful paintings of Jennifer Mills, the gorgeous photography of Jean-Jacques and Susan Benoist, and the intricate jewelry of Joseph Rhodes. The Hoopers continually introduce new and exciting items to their inventory. “I have the best job in the world!” says K. “I get to find fun things, decorate, and then spend the day talking to wonderful people! Who can beat that?” “There is nothing more gratifying than having repeat

customers come to the store with friends and family because we are one of their favorite places to shop,” says Scott. In their free time, Scott and Karolyn enjoy sculling on Lake Adger, cooking and golfing. T-Bone spends the majority of his time outside of work sleeping and eating, and Xena the Warrior Princess enjoys chasing a particular chipmunk, “Chippie”, who has taken residence near the Hooper home. Scott and K are excited to be a part of the Tryon downtown revitalization efforts. Scott is a member of the TDDA board and a proud member of the Rotary Club of Tryon. “There is something about Tryon that is magnetic. I enjoy volunteering in the community that we have grown to love.” The warm and friendly atmosphere makes the shopping experience at HOOP’s one you will wish to repeat. As Tryon welcomes the cooler temperatures of the coming season, stop by HOOP’s for a browse and enjoy a complimentary cup of coffee or cocoa to chase away the chill and see what new treasures you may find.

New View Realty

N

ew View Realty was created in 2010 when another brokerage, Century 21 Tryon Real Estate, was closing due to the retirement of the owner. Three agents from that firm, Happy McLeod, Tim Wright and Kathy Toomey, decided to strike out on their own and “Bring a New View to Realty.” Andrew Foster joined them in 2011 and they operated the business together until 2013 when two of the owners retired. The third owner decided to step back from an ownership role in 2015 which left Kathy Toomey as the sole owner. Although the ownership has changed, the original concept of the firm continues today. We support the local community both financially and with volunteer hours. We use local suppliers whenever possible, we sponsor numerous community events and we roll up our sleeves to help out. The firm has grown to include seven agents who bring a variety of experience in real estate and life! Our team is comprised of Kerry Austin, Andrew Foster, Kirk Gollwitzer, Sandra Jimison, John Toomey, Kathy Toomey and Tim Wright. Our business philosophy is to work with our clients to find the right home or right buyer for their property. We strive to bring honesty and reliability to the profession. The right home for a buyer may not be one of our listings and we are OK with that. It’s far more important to match the right buyer with the right property. On the flip side, we work with sellers to prepare their property for sale and use technology to promote it.

Carruth Furniture Company

C

arruth Furniture looks like a modest establishment from the outside, but once you enter, you will be amazed to find just about anything you need for your home. In 1953, a year after B. Frank Carruth started Carruth Furniture Company, it moved into the 7,500 square foot brick building he constructed on South Howard Avenue, where the retail business stands today. In addition to furniture, he sold GE appliances, Bigelow carpets, jewelry, watches, and other household goods. An addition in 1959 doubled the space to 15,000 square feet. In 1967, Carruth’s cousin, Jack Carruth, Jr. purchased the business and ran it for 30 years before the building caught fire and was destroyed, except for the outside brick walls. Not to be deterred, he worked out of a warehouse until the current building was ready for a grand reopening in 1998. As the building expanded, so did the Carruth family with many generations working in the business. Frank’s nephews, Donnie Carruth and Doug Brown, along with his niece, Kathy Carruth Sitton, as well as Jack’s cousin Larry Bagwell and Jack’s brother-in-laws Russell Morris and Fred Culbreth worked in the store. Jack’s son, Johnny, and his granddaughter, Nicole Carruth-Chapman (Johnny’s daughter), manage the store today. In addition to Johnny,

Jack’s son, Mike and his wife Marianne, Jack’s son Steve, and his daughter, Patricia Gordon, have also worked in the store as well as Nicole’s husband, Jeff Chapman. The next generation (Jack’s grandchildren and great grand children) to join the team includes Nicole and Jeff’s son, Garret Walker; Mike and Marianne’s sons Casey, Joshua, and Jack; Johnny’s son J.J. and daughter Katherine; and Patricia’s sons Graham and Michael. “There is an enjoyment that comes from knowing you are continuing a family tradition and that members of your family have worked hard to build up and provide a service to your community,” says Nicole Carruth-Chapman. The biggest change over the years is technology used for the daily operations of business and in the products they sell. They have carried GE appliances and La-Z-Boy along with Simmons Beautyrest bedding for years. The one thing that has remained the same is the Carruth family’s devotion to provide knowledgeable and attentive customer service. “We are so thankful for all of our loyal customers and we want them to come back time after time and enjoy that experience so they can continue for many years to come,” says Johnny Carruth. Carruth Furniture would love for you to come in and visit. They truly enjoy being here for their communities.
