I
n this Tryon Daily Bulletin Steeplechase Edition, we’ll introduce you to the traditions that surround Steeplechase and the events that make it a very special day for the Foothills community. On the morning of April 15, race fans will begin to pour onto the field ready to celebrate and embrace the day. Women and men will be dressed in their finest and adorned with hats of every description. A Steeplechase tradition, hats are a must – there’s even a hat contest – as well as a contest for men called the “Go To Hell” Pants Contest. Delicious spreads of food and drink will be creatively displayed in Steeplechase tailgating fashion. In this year’s tailgate contest keep in mind judges will be looking for originality and attention to detail. Although people come from all over the world to take part in the festivities you will find the event serves as a homecoming for many locals. It’s an annual gathering where family and friends come together in celebration of the Block House Steeplechase, some spending months making plans for their tailgate set-up, choosing the perfect hat, outfit and planning the perfect menu. A day for meeting and greeting friends old and new, the event provides something for most everyone. Patriotism, sport and family all come together through events surrounding the big races. More than anything this day is meant to celebrate our area’s equestrian heritage and bring the community together for a day of racing and sportsmanship. Come out and enjoy. For more information, visit blockhouseraces.com. See you at the races! Kevin Powell General Manager Tryon Daily Bulletin

2015 Tailgate Contest winner was Sly Fox Boutique of Tryon.
tailgating at the Block House Steeplechase
H
orses and jockeys won’t be the only ones competing at the April 15 Block House Steeplechase. Spectators of all ages can also get into the action with the Stick Horse Race, the Hat Contest, Go To Hell Pants Contest and the hotly contested Tailgate Contest. For those just putting together tailgates for their friends, any kind of food and decoration goes as long as it makes your group happy. But if you want to compete for a top prize, it will take originality, a theme to work around, and attention to detail.
Judges will be whizzing around in their golf carts to be sure they have time to see everyone. If they stop and ask you if they can take pictures of your tailgate, it’s a sign that you may be in the running for a prize. Allow time to get in and set up your creation. Spectators also have fun walking through the parking areas to see the different tailgate set-ups. And best of all, regardless of who takes home the gift baskets and bragging rights, all of the tailgates end up being enjoyed by the happy groups who get to eat them.

Tryon Block House Steeplechase
increases number of jockeys and races for 2017
A $175,000 purse and new A-rated course has resulted in double entries and top-tier jockeys The number of top-rated athletes competing in the 71st annual Tryon Block House Races on Saturday, April 15, 2017 in Columbus, N.C. has more than doubled last year’s participation numbers. With 48 registered jockeys, the tally reverses a 10-year decline in the race’s participation. The drastic increase in attendance this year is credited to the new partnership between Tryon Riding & Hunt Club (TR&HC), the organization that founded and has produced this steeplechase for 71 years, and Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), a 1,600-acre state-of-the-art equestrian lifestyle destination in Polk County, N.C.
With the partnership came a new A-rated course, double the prize money from $80,000 to $175,000, and a new date that did not conflict with any other steeplechase events - all of which resulted in a stronger showing from champion jockeys. Some of the top-rated athletes scheduled to compete at this Saturday’s Tryon Block House Races include: Paddy Young, five-time jockey champion by wins; Willie McCarthy, champion jockey by wins and purses in 2014; Kieran Norris, champion jockey by wins in 2016, Ross Geraghty, champion jockey by wins and purses in 2012; Sean McDermott, champion jockey by purses in 2016; Jack Doyle, champion jockey by purses in 2015; and Brendan Crowley, champion apprentice jockey in 2016. The National Steeplechase Association (NSA) is supportive of the new partnership and the benefits it has provided. “It’s all very exciting. It’s the 71st running
of the Tryon Block House Races and I knew this partnership between Tryon Riding & Hunt Club and Tryon International Equestrian Center would succeed,” said NSA President Guy Torsilieri. “They have produced a spectacular event for Saturday and we have already added more races. The horsemen have embraced it and it’s a very strong card this year. The horsemen have high regards for this new course and it’s going to be a great event.” A bigger prize purse attracted some of the sport’s top riders and allowed for more horses in the competition. For example, 15 horses were entered in the flat race, but not all could have competed in a single run. To accommodate the influx of interest from such high-level, professional talent, the Tryon Block House Races team added another $25,000 purse and split that race into one group of eight horses and another group of seven, which allowed JOCKEYS & RACES CONTINUED ON PAGE 15

all interested jockeys the opportunity to compete. According to Torsilieri, the organizers’ commitment to accommodating these athletes sends a strong, positive message of support to the horsemen. For Mark Bellissimo – CEO of Tryon Equestrian Partners that owns and operates Tryon International Equestrian Center and is the partner organization for the Tryon Block House Races – this historic steeplechase originally attracted his family to the Polk County, N.C. area and is a critical event to grow for the region. “I am incredibly fond of this historic steeplechase and its legacy to equestrian sport in this region and beyond,” said Bellissimo. “I am pleased that we can leverage our resources to enhance the race experience for both the horseman and the spectator. I am certain the Tryon Block House Races will continue to grow and become one of the most sought-after opportunities for both athletes and spectators.”
TICKETS Tickets are still on sale for tailgating, VIP Legends Hospitality Tent, or walk-in admission, and will remain on sale until 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 15, 2017.

L
aurie Sullivan’s artistic endeavors have been pursued since an early age, and horses have always been the favorite subject for her artwork. She has ridden since childhood and as a junior, competed in the hunter divisions in horse shows. Her love of the equine provides an intimate knowledge of the anatomy and of their beautiful spirit. Laurie has a BFA in painting with a drawing minor from East Carolina University. She was an art director in advertising for many years in the fashion industry, and then she became a licensed art teacher, certified for K-12 in North Carolina. GLOSSARY
Knowing these terms will help you understand and follow the races ALLOWANCE A race restricted to horses with certain records. Example: A “non winners of two” allowance is open only to horses with one victory or less. APPRENTICE A relatively inexperienced jockey. The National Steeplechase Association gives apprentice jockeys the following weight allowances (deductions): Non winners of one race, 10 pounds; of 15 races, five pounds. Jockeys must be at least 16 years old. CLAIMING Certain races are designated as claiming races, where a horse may be purchased, or claimed. The claim is made and money put up before the race is run, and the purchase must go through, no matter where the horse finishes. Only NSA licensees may claim horses. FURLONG The standard measure in U.S. racing. One furlong equals one eighth of a mile. HANDICAP A race in which the horses are assigned different amounts of weight to carry, according to their respective abilities and past performances. In theory, the purpose is to have all horses reach the finish line at the same time.
MAIDEN A horse that has never won a race. NATIONAL FENCE A synthetic steeplechase fence used at most stops in the U.S. Consists of a steel frame stuffed with plastic “brush” at a height of 52 inches. A foam rubber roll, covered with green canvas, is placed on the takeoff side. NOVICE A horse in the early stages of its steeplechase career. Novice races are held at many meets, to give horses experience over hurdles before they compete with more seasoned jumpers. NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE ASSOCIATION The NSA, founded in 1895, is the governing body for steeplechase racing in the United States. Based in Fair Hill, Md., the NSA sanctions, takes entries, approves officials, and inspects courses. The NSA licenses all participants and keeps official statistics. PADDOCK Area where horses are saddled before a race. PURSE Total money distributed in a race. Winner collects 60 percent of total purse, with shares paid to sixth place.
STEWARDS Presiding judges or officials at a race meet. They have final decision on all matters pertaining to a race. They may levy fines on owners, trainers, or jockeys who violate the rules of racing. Typical rulings include disqualification of horses who interfere with others in a race. Each race meet has three stewards. TIMBER FENCE Natural, wooden fence constructed of boards, logs or posts and rails. Timber races are held as part of many race meets. WINGS The panels on either side of a steeplechase fence designed to guide a horse to a fence.
