Wunder is the first smart parenting assistant that uses voice technology and A.I. to give new parents the right information at the right time and stimulates language and cognitive child development. Backed

by science-based research, Wunder allows parents to thoughtfully navigate raising happy, healthy, curious, and all-around awesome humans. Wunder device is an app companion that tracks a child’s development from birth to age 3. It detects baby cries, monitors, and improves language and cognitive development with advanced AI algorithms.

background The science shows that age 0-5 is when the brain grows the fastest: 90% grows by the time a child is 4. After the founder conducted a university-led study of 25 families and children, it turned out our platform and algorithm could indeed not just monitor but also improve a child’s language and cognitive development. The goal is to translate the best of science and provide these valuable tools in a cost-effective way to the general population.

design research &insights The team conducted more than 20 online interviews via video calls and visited 5 American homes to talk to families.

2. Latent Needs

- Besides the pain points, what are those hidden needs in the day to day life of a parent! We talked to all interviewees (US parents) to understand their daily routines, and from there, we clustered the secondary findings and found the common implicit needs they shared. The process helped us to better see the product-market fit and outline the value proposition.

hello birdie Ye a r D im e ns io ns M a te r ia l

2020 W 220mm* D680mm* H160mm Plastic

Hello Birdie is a storybook companion that encourages parent-child interactions and literacy skills for 3-10 years old. The reading assistant monitor helps parents fully develop their preschoolers’ cognitive, emotional and social skills through reading, by reducing moments of frustration or boredom during reading times at home and increasing the level of engagement between kids, parents, and their books.

research 1. Emotional appeal

- What’s “meaningful interaction”! - How do parents value reading! - What do reading and books mean for them!

“I began building a library for my daughter, Ellery, before she was born.” “Many parents instill a love of books in their children by reading aloud to them -- sometimes even as early as in utero, that’s also what I did for Taylor.”

bo

“I want to give her a gr store of books that draw and influences her. Ima learn from their favorit them for a lifetime.”

“Reading to your child effective ways you can h successful in school and child becomes a reader.”

is one of the most help your child be d life, even after your .”

“Inspired by my friend, I decided to inscribe most of the books I gave to my daughter. I realized that by inscribing the books I gave her, each gift felt more intentional and more special. “

2. Form factor and use case

stuffed toy (companion)

The goal is to encourage parents to engage more in the playtime and storytime and allow kids to read more by themselves. After interviewing parents and observing those kids’ reading, the insights support the direction of form factor to be a character that reads with kids and listens to their readings.

prototyping &testing Camera

18cm

Book 1. 18cm between the camera and books 2. In order to accurately capture the image, the device has to be stable when in use 3. Big volume for the 18650 lithium battery 4.Matches brand aesthetics 5. Blends in home environments

inspiration &moodboard For the use cases and interactions, it was agreed that there needs to be a character for this reading companionship. Considering future content development, which includes songs for learning, a singing bird is absolutely the perfect candidate. The look and feel were largely inspired by wooden toy animals, which are playful and decorative.

design By pressing the end of Hello Birdie, the camera will be lifted to the right height and angle together with the reading light switched on.

the unexpected blossom Ye a r D im e ns io ns M a te r ia l

2015 W 280mm* D280mm* H520mm Acrylic, stainless steel

The objective and attempt of this project are to twist the image of mold and invite the audience to appreciate the beauty of the mold. The existence of mold implies the idea of time and space, and every piece has its own distinctive visual that tells its story. As the project originally determined to be experimental, furniture was chosen to be the vehicle as it’s an object that the audience will not only look at but also will have direct physical contact with.

inspiration

The project was originally inspired by the observation of surroundings and a daily dose of curiosity and creativity. Taiwan is a humid country where mold unexpectedly appears everywhere in day to day life, and the impression of mold is

usually unpleasant, yet little do we notice, the colors, textures, and patterns are unique and fascinating that we might wonder, “is there a way to seize those beautiful encounters!”

And generation by generation, the selected mold was extracted and reproduced to make sure certain attributes will show.

prototyping and design challenge In order to present the details of the mold, remaining the colors and textures was the biggest challenge. Every factor is critical for the result, which emphasized the importance of casting process. As the design concept is to authentically display the visuals of mold, the design of support itself was expected to be complementary for the top. As simple as it should be, the support design accentuates the mold and completes the elegant, slim, and delightful overall look.

appendix: we failed, but it’s ok! Use your imagination and just try and error

The sketch shows one of the preliminary ideas to directly present mold on furniture, which is to grow mold directly on solid

wood instead of petri dishes. Unfortunately, it took forever and the mold was not even visible. FAILED#

Considering mycelium is extremely fine and tenuous that will be damaged easily in the casting process, one of the attempts was to see whether liquid nitrogen could make it stronger. However, once the petri dish left the liquid nitrogen container, frost cov-

ered the surface because of water vapor in the air and temperature difference. Due to with no more advanced equipment could support the experiment. FAILED#

afternoon glow Ye a r D im e ns io ns M a te r ia l

2015 W 280mm* D280mm* H520mm Acrylic, stainless steel

Tea culture has always been playing a part in the lifestyle in Taiwan. Not only Chinese tea, Japanese tea, and British tea are also the popular options that people go for. The wide range of kinds of tea not only says about personal tastes but also defines the vibe and setting of that moment. Some people enjoy tea alone for a relaxing and peaceful solitude, some people share tea time with a good chat. A teapot is the center of the interactions, and Afternoon Glow lights up the room and creates those warm and delightful moments.

inspiration The inspiration was from noticing how water becomes the medium of light and changes the ingredient while being changed by it as well. The collection of tea moments in everyday life is the best moodboard for this design. By creating an extra room for the candlelight at the bottom, Afternoon Glow allows the light to bring out the dance of water, ingredients, and illumination.

local craftmanship Product Design_Afternoon Glow

Glass craftsmanship used to be the major local industry of Hsinchu, Taiwan for over 70 years, and now already become part of the cultural heritage. Artisans in Hsinchu specialize in different kinds of techniques including mouth-blown glass, fused glass, glass sculpture, and so on. In this project, the piece was done by an experienced glass master, Liu, Rey-Dian, who is known for glass blowing.

Product Design_Afternoon Glow

A souce of light and drinks are what we share with others, and that is where interactions and conversations take place around. Afternoon Glow creates a feeling of comfort, warmth, and relaxation that invites us to appreciate the aesthetics and philosophy of “tea time.
