URBAN REVITALIZATION MANIFESTO The Renovation Of Industrial Heritage in An Shan
1.0 From Traditional Industrial Town To Recreational Destination Urban Design Academic Studio Group work with Rongji Zhang Role in team: Conceptual Design(70%), Technical Drawing(70%) Instructor: Dan Li Time: Spring 2019
AnShan’s post-industrial era is one that is marked by substantial decay of its urban fabric scarred with abandoned, derelict structures and machines, as an old industrial city in China, Anshan was once the leader of China’s rise, but due to the adjustment of national strategy, those industrialized environment not compatible with urbanization confront transformation. In the 2017 report of AnShan government, it proposed to actively develop the service industry, cultivate new consumption growth points such as pension, tourism and culture, improve tourism service facilities and build tourism demonstration zones, therefore, in the next three to five years, AnShan’s industrial heritage, on the basis of preserving its material form, will develop around the complementary development of cultural creative industry and tourism leisure industry. Based on the analysis of industrial and natural resources and geographical location, this project select an industrial town located in the suburb of the city, and design a tourism plan at the initial stage based on the local economic foundation and development status, so as to serve as the starting point and catalyst to stimulate regional revitalization
REGIONAL ANALYSIS I industry and natural resources & site location
BACKGROUND OF ANSHAN I industrial history of Anshan and future development
Anshan is a traditional industrial city, which has provided a large amount of industrial resources and mineral resources in the past decades. The steel industry and rich mining areas is the most distinctive urban symbol and an important support of local economic development
The city is built because of rich mineral resources, thus forming the spatial structure of urban space, rural space and transportation system around the mining areas

through tourism publicity and guidance to gather more people, to help increase the cultural atmosphere of cultural and creative industrial park
through creative industries such as leisure and commerce, to provide more tourist attractions for the tourism industry and weaken the impact of tourism timeliness
Based on industrial culture, recycling and reusing used industrial machine, cultural and creative industry system, tourism and leisure system and supporting entertainment system should be established
Make use of the natural resources in the city, and combine the industrial culture atmosphere of the city, create the industrial tourism system, to make the interaction between the various scenic spots
The change of strategy prompted the transformation of the city, and the government adopted the sustainable development mode under the guidance of culture catalytic

A The Red historical building It used to be residential buildings for miners and their families, documented life and memories in the mines in the past, and being the site of the first attraction on the tour route B The junction of railway and canal The junction between the railway and the canal makes it have the atmosphere of the railway culture and the publicity of the water front landscape, it’s the site of the second attraction C The edge of factory and mine This is a place that carries the history of industry and machine, also witnesses the history of human and nature against each other in the past, it’s the site of the third attraction D The other side of mine At the end of the route, choose the end of the mine as the site of the last attraction, after all, the city is made and declined by mine, it all starts here
THE THEATRE COMPLEX I the first catalytic point
THE WATERFRONT TOUR TOWER I the second catalytic point
The historic residential buildings gives the atmosphere and memory of the industrial life in the first site, based on local traditional culture, an old building was selected to be transformed into a shop, tourist service centre and hotel, with a new theatre and a pavilion built on top of the building, visitors can project their images or videos onto the pavilion’s facade and share their stories with the area, this interaction between the site and visitors will increase the immersive experience of visitors, users will also be the creators
The combination of abandoned railway tracks and canals gives the site more possibilities, and the soon-to-be-completed waterfront landscape belt is combined with industrial elements to form a new waterfront park, using the railway and surrounding industrial machines as prototypes, landscape platforms and a tour tower are built for tourists and local residents to enjoy, the top of the tour tower offers more views of the mine, and movable functional cabins on the rails provide leisure and convenience for visitors
THE CABLE CAR STATION I the third catalytic point
THE MINE MONUMENT I the final catalytic point
The large amount of industrial objects provided by the abandoned factories near the mine pit provide interest for the tour route, and this industrial machines are reused as landscape structures, viewing platforms and surrounding footpath to facilitate tourists to have a more comprehensive view of the mine pit, new and old elements combine to form a new cable station to transport visitors to the next attraction, from its top, visitors can see the pit in its entirety, which is the climax of the whole trip
The mine still has two years to be used for mining, it is impossible to transform the mine on a large scale, at the end of the journey is a simple monument, yet solemn, although the development of industry was responsible for the rise of the city, the equally huge exploitation also caused inevitable damage to the land and nature, the monument is made from the remains of industrial mining, and a huge crack on the surface is a metaphor for the huge pit on the ground, and there are no other superfluous decorations around the monument

2.0: Historical Residential Building Renovation Architecture Design Academic Studio Group work with RongJi Zhang Role in team: Conceptual Design(70%), Technical Drawing(70%) Instructor: Dan Li Time: Spring 2019
This historical buildings on the first catalytic site are former soviet-style residential buildings built in the 1950s for miners’ families and Soviet experts, are symbols of the city’s glorious steel age and witness the rise and fall of AnShan, as people pay more and more attention to urban culture, these important carriers of urban history are preserved and will be given a new destiny. with this problem in mind, the project conceives a prototype solution by overlaying a new carrier of activities and memories on top of a old carrier of history, on the basis of retaining the basic pattern of the original building, the functional and structural transformation is mainly carried out, while retaining the surface of original building and atmosphere of the whole community, the new building is endowed with new commercial functions, such as theatres and pavilions, based on the living memory and revitalization of the site, while new materials also form a new spatial atmosphere and experience

HYPOCRISY & TRUE LIVING Scaffolding & Pavilion Design In Shang Hai Architecture Design Academic Studio Individual Work Instructor: Pey Lung Time: Spring 2018
Pavilion is often transformed from the essence of the architect’s or creator’s belief and manifesto, could be an avant-garde ideas or a theme that is experimented continuously. Scaffolding structure is also similar with a pavilion which is often temporary, a structure which is mainly for functional and service but creates undoubted beauty by itself, it is a space in between the city and the building which doesn’t belong to each side creating a neutral-space witnessing the city and the building. This project is to use “pavilion” or “scaffolding ” as a metaphor creating an argument or manifesto of the understanding of a piece of a city, a piece of city that will become our own utopia that is created with one strong idea. Based on the discussion of “the hypocrisy of life” in the city, two topics of true living and hypocrisy are derived, and then from the process of stimulating thinking to find our own attitude to a new architecture into the site. This is a kind of imagination and interpretation of the city, from abstract thinking to interpretation of topics, then the results of thinking are translated into concrete designs
TOPIC CONCEPT I choose two topics for discussion and make strategy
SITE SELECTION AND PROBLEMS I choose two sites for two topics
THE COLUMBIA CIRCLE I site analyse for topic one
THE SHIJI SQUARE I site analyse for topic two
BEHAVIOR & PUBLICITY
People’s behavior and activities in the site show a periodical climax, The Columbia Circle was in a state of silence at most of the time, too much surveillance and security is monitoring the publicity here, so most of what people are doing here is short stay (just take a photo and go away), not really enjoying the publicity and service here, the true meaningful activities, such as exercise, walking and leisure , takes place in a few fixed time frames
STRATEGY
The Street Market created by scaffolding as a catalyst, on the one hand, to meet the needs of nearby residents, on the other hand, to provide a variety of functions, so that make people happen and create more diverse and meaningful activities, and realize the public nature and equality of the site
REASON
The rapid development of the city makes the urban space expand rapidly, and then produces many huge public spaces, such as squares, but these huge spaces do not fully serve the citizens, no greening, no facilities, no enter t ainment,no suit able scale, poor accessibility and so on, this makes it difficult for these squares to be public spaces where the public are able to use, huge but empty and useless
STRATEGY
The Shared Telephone Booth created by scaffolding as a form of resistance, resisting and criticizing the excessive size of urban space, it also shows the impotence of architects under the power and right, the use mechanism of telephone booth is that people use their phones to scan qr codes on public phones and make calls through a fixed phone program, it is a function that appears to be useful but is actually useless
THE STREET MARKET I No.1 equipment for topic one
FORM PROTOTYPE I create forms from real living
The main function of the No.1 Equipment is street market and shopping, which is to serve the basic living needs of the surrounding residents, and interact with other markets in surrounding residential areas, make basic service more comprehensive to cover residential areas, re-establish the Columbia Circle as the center of the district, other functions mainly come from the activities and behaviors of the residents around the site, more public spaces were created in the empty area where is located in the west side of the site to accommodate these functions, which trigger people to create new activities and live a natrual living
FUNCTION PROTOTYPE I functions from the activities of the site

UNIT DESCRIPTION The whole equipment has eight different functional units, which are organized, connected and interacted with each other, to make the form of the equipment more flexible and changeable, the space formed by the combination of units gradually permeates and spreads in the site. Each unit is an individual, and some are groups, each unit has its own function, and those units forms new space and function after combination and organization, also forms new vessels and places for people to take place activities in them

FUNCTIONS TRANSFORMATION I different functions in day and night
THE SHARED TELEPHONE BOOTH I No.2 equipment for topic two
The equipment consists of three parts: telephone booth, a big space, and balloon, at night, the balloon and big space light up and the rest of the part darkens, so the equipment is like being suspended by balloons on the square, it is a form that does not exist carries on the silent resistance
BALLOON
BIG EMPTY SPACE
TELEPHONE BOOTH
During the night, the equipment becomes less functional, vessels and units that function during the day do not function explicitly at night, but rather provide people with fair public space where they can have interesting activities, when the units light up at night, people can walk, relax, walk the dog, dance, hold a music festival, play chess, exercise, children can skateboarding, play and so on, it is a park open to everyone with a real and natural life
the old man said it was a public square
I’m a office clerk, I walk across the square every day to work
for citizens
No chair for me to sit
I don’t know what it means
No Fun

maybe it’s... em... fun?
it looks like a telephone booth
and see go
why should I use this when I already have a phone that can make calls ? what is the use of this? boring...
use your own phone to scan the qr code and then you can use the phone app to make a call...... Emmmm......It seems interesting
I really do not know ......
what is this?
UNTIL NOW... ...
During the daytime, the main function of the equipment has obvious service nature, people come to the market to buy the goods they need, drink coffee and chat in the coffee shop, go to the platform and runway on the second floor to exercise, or eat breakfast in the early shop, it is like a complex of different functions, provide public and fair services for the residents around and provide differrent places for activities to take place
LONG TIME AGO... ...
NARRATOR I useless equipment in useless space
look! here is a stair
okey, let me try this
finally... on the top floor
maybe something interesting up there a big space ...... still empty ! !
Hypocrisy ! Useless !
Everyone has their own city and life in heart, and every urban utopian fantasy that exists and does not exist is a romantic poetry that our heart give to the city The true living is more than just some practical life functions or material spaces, it is the yearning and wish for a beautiful life and dream city from our hearts.
ONE LARGE TABLE Interior Renovation Apartment Design In Hong Kong Architecture Interior Design Individual Work Academic Studio Instructor: Manus Leung Time: Autumn 2019
Hong Kong is one of the highly dense and expensive cities to live. Because of this high-density, it has created a series of apartment typologies that is unique to its economic and social context. Because most apartments are relatively modest in size, many of the structural walls are located in the periphery of the building. This allows many of the internal walls to be demolished and reconfigured to meet new modern living needs. This Interior design is to reconfiguration a 75 square metres apartment in Hong Kong, and develop detail spatial and furniture design in the domestic typology, taking the public space in the centre of apartment as the core of this design, using different boundaries to divide the public space and explore more possibilities of the public space in the small scale apartment. It’s more than just an interior design, it’s also to examine the idea of public and private in the domestic living scale
ORIGINAL PLAN I original layout of the apartment space This is a real project in Hong Kong, the client is a couple in their 50’s, with a son who studies abroad but will occasionally return home during school holidays. They also have a cat and a domestic helper (maid). this project not only needs to meet basic living and functional needs, but also needs more storage space for daily necessities and more public space for inviting friends for tea and dinner, of course, a balcony that allows them to grow plants.
EDGE & FUNCTION & VIEW I project strategy diagram
The core concept of this design is “one large table”, the space in the middle of the apartment uses the method of surface subsidence to form a sunken public space where many family activities and public activities can take place, the edges of the space creates a large table inside the apartment, other living rooms surrounds it without affecting the air conduit and sewers, since the interior height of the apartment is only 2.6 meters, the windows and sliding doors on the internal walls are designed to ensure a good horizontal view in the entire apartment.
In the ancient Chinese custom, people need to take off their shoes and change different shoes when entering the house for a clean interior environment and the convenience of life, in response to this customs, a small space for changing shoes is designed in the entrance space, and an underground storage space for shoes is also designed inside it
ASH-TREE WOOD
WHITE PAINTED WOOD
DIVERSE PUBLIC SPACE I space formed by edges
The public space in the middle of the apartment is divided into five interior spaces by six boundaries. A and F are fixed boundaries, B is a boundary with wide view, and C, D, E are movable boundaries, the opening and closing of boundaries changes the view of the public space, and their combination forms the space with different scales, thus satisfying the needs of private spaces (cinema, cloakroom, study) and public spaces (living room, dining hall ), and make the “large table interact with the surrounding traffic space
A JOURNEY OF SELF-REDEMPTION Narrative Vessel — An Experimental Space Design Architecture Space Research Academic Project Individual Work Instructor: LiFeng Lin Time: Spring 2017
This is a spatial narrative about exploration of the inner world and self-redemption. A writer with severe stuttering is a very self-abasement person, imagined ridicule from others makes him unable to face his true self, one day he comes to an ancient castle on the sea and meets four people who live in the castle, everything here makes him feel familiar but also inexplicable fear, the writer chose to continue exploring the castle and faces his own fears, he finds the inner self hiding in the castle, and realizes that stuttering is not the whole of life, finally he accepts an imperfect but real self. It is an experimental space research through a new space creation method (spatial inclusion, overlap, confrontation and metaphor), discuss and extend three established relationships of architecture form, space organization, and users in a given vessel through generic forms and narrative logic, redefine and create new forms of space using relationships between vessel, narrative structures, and protagonist
VESSEL & STORY I relationship between vessel and story This is a journey of self-redemption: a stuttering writer experienced three periods of self-abasement, helpless anger and loss, finally overcome the devil inside and re-understanding himself. It is a process in which external and inner psychological personalities confront and permeate each other, so the vessel of choice is a monumental "Observatoires" located on the surface of water, with three features that match the story: spatial combat, chaotic order and spatial penetration. The story goes by in this vessel
SPATIAL COMBAT The dark space in the middle of the vessel contrasts with the light space around it, thus forming an a relationship of spatial antagonism SPATIAL ORDER The vessel facade has a centralized form and regular dome, irregular wall and axis in the ground plane form the chaos of spatial order SPATIAL PENETRATION The surface of water creates spatial penetration of vessel: the dome of reality on the water, the dome of consciousness in the reflection
“ INCEPTION ”I case study of narrative structure Movie Inception provides a strategy for spatial operation and narrative structure:spatial metaphor and spatial inclusion. The former corresponds to the real world and the inward world in story, the latter uses the contained space to create the penetration of space in vessel
NARRATIVE STRUCTURE I narrative logic of story from vessel and case study
GENERIC FORM I space prototype about story
Based on vessel and film, the story use space as narrative medium to create different scene spaces, through the strategy of spatial inclusion, spatial combat and spatial metaphor to create the inward world of protagonist, The process of walking through spaces is the process of self-redemption
STORY LINE The confrontation and inclusion of different spaces creates four scenes of story, the interaction between scenes is generated through direct or indirect traffic space, it connect relatively independent scene spaces and form a complete and flowing story
SPACE & PSYCHOLOGY Based on inception, each story scene created by different spatial forms is a metaphor for the inner personality and the external personality, the metaphorical space contains and penetrates each other, symbolizing the complicated inner world of the protagonist
SPATIAL COMBAT Based on vessel, put two opposite spaces into one scene, the metaphorical space of external personality contains the metaphorical space of internal personality, through the confrontation of two kinds of space to strengthen space expression of inward world
NARRATIVE VESSEL I space as a narrator generated by generic forms The narrative structure and story divide the vessel into four parts as four chapters: three walls formed to reinforce the spatial confrontation and a dome at the top, four parts of vessel use the methods of spatial inclusion and overlap to combine opposing spaces and generic forms. Overall, the story translates vessel from the observatory into a castle, four Nonplayed characters living inside the castle will join the protagonist on a journey of self-redemption
chapter four
chapter three
chapter one
chapter two
The outer surface of the vessel has a hardly change, while the inner space has changed a lot, which is a metaphor for the story’s excavation and exploration of the inner world. A journey of self-redemption is a journey of self-discovery, is a hard but brave journey for a person with a psychological disorder, The journey is a reminder that there is no need to be tormented by imagined troubles
Do not fight a losing battle with a demon that does not exist

Architectural Photography Group Research Instructor: MingJin Dong & Lan Liang Time: spring 2016 to spring 2018
The series of images are from a research project called “research on the correlation between architectural elements and psychological cognition by photography”, hosted in 2016, which mainly studies the connection and correlation between architectural elements and people’s psychological feeling, the stimulation of the outside causes people to have different psychological feelings, and then produce cognition and behavior, and buildings make people have various feelings all the time, this research divided the macro-architecture into architectural components, and selected concrete, light and plants as the research objects, firstly, the architectural attributes of these three materials are redefined and interpreted, and then specific research is conducted according to the knowledge of psychology and visual psychology to explore the psychological feelings and characteristics from this three psychological elements.

During the two years of this research, the team went to Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Harbin, Inner Mongolia, Hangzhou and other nine cities to take photos, although the research didn't get very in-depth results due to our own limitations and mistakes in selecting topics, the study in the research process did observe the spectacle in the details of architecture, the atmosphere of the architectural space is derived from the psychological feelings of people, under the good use of building objects, it can excavate the hidden emotions, this kind of experience teuly played a significant role in the cognition of architecture.
