Welcome to the Cherry Hinton

ISSUE 1 SUMMER 2012

COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER

Welcome to the first of what we hope will be many newsletters. It is a Newsletter for the whole village and the Residents’ hope that it will become a must read for Cherry Hinton enabling local groups to publicise their events and to keep local residents up to date with changes in the village and surrounding area. Whilst our first edition has lots of content we think we have only scratched the surface and we welcome contributions from anyone and everyone who works or lives in Cherry Hinton. Want to share a story, tell people about an event, find volunteers? This is the place to do it. You may already be aware that Cherry Hinton now has its own website (see page 3 for more details) and this will be another way for you to share information with the rest of the village. However, we know that not all of our residents are using computers so we will take information from the website to share. As an aside anyone interested in some informal training on using the web should contact the Residents Association and we can arrange some help with this.

CHERRY HINTON RESIDENTS

SAFEGUARDING AND PROMOTING THE INTEREST OF RESIDENTS The CHRA has been running for the last couple of years and emerged from The Colville Residents Group. There is an active committee working on a range of initiatives related to Cherry Hinton. We aim to hold regular General Meetings to report on progress and to hear from speakers on topics of interest to the village. If you would like to join our email group and receive regular monthly updates with current news, local events , special offers from local businesses and more then please email us

chragroupjoin@gmail.com.

Our first issue also includes a survey on local community facilities. The Residents Association have been discussing with the City Council the resources available to us locally and we would really like to have your views so please take a few minutes to fill it in and drop it all off at the library or Cambridge Building Society, or complete it online @ www.cherryhintonvillage.co.uk - Community Resource Consultation is on the left hand side of the page. Our first issue was financed by a grant from the City Council and we are grateful for the support of the Community Development Team. Our aim is to fund future issues through advertising and sponsorship so if this is of interest to you please get in touch 0798 0113808 or email chragroup@gmail.com Cherry Hinton Residents Association.

THE WILDLIFE TRUST IS 100 YEARS OLD The Wildlife Trust Cambridgeshire is celebrating a big birthday - and the background story of the trust is a fascinating one.

CHERRY HINTON COMMUNITY By Harvey Levison

Let me introduce myself, living in Cherry Hinton with my wife Jean since 2007, who originally moved here nearly 40 years ago when she was Jean Ford. After 20 years or so with St. John Amubulance, Cherry Hinton Division, and learning, giving and training First Aid, I finally decided last year to stand down from St John and look for something else to do in the community. This coincided with the development of Cherry Hinton Residents Association, which for me was the right time to get involved. My previous contact with the local Community has mainly been through St John, by leading a first aid team at the Cherry Hinton Festival on the Recreation ground over the last 8 years. In recent years the local event grew to become a huge and most popular annual event, organised and planned by Cherry Hinton Festival Society. So now that the CH Residents Association has been formed and taking shape with many wonderful local people getting involved.... What do I look for.....? I would like it to encompass all clubs, associations, groups etc in Cherry Hinton, be there for ALL Residents of all ages, provide a strong community base for everyone and to strive to provide more ammenities and facilities for all our residents to take part and enjoy and finally to make our Cherry Hinton a wonderful safe and happy place to live. Cherry Hinton Residents Association.

In an act of vision and philanthropy, Charles Rothschild (1877-1923) backer, expert entomologist and pioneer of nature conservation, set up the Society for the Promotion of Nature Reserves in 1912, the forerunner of the Wildlife Trusts partnership. Concerned about the loss of wildlife habitats, in 1915 the Society produced a schedule of the best wildlife reserves in the country, some of which were purchased as nature reserves. There are now 47 Trusts nationwide. In Cherry Hinton we have 4 nature reserves close to us and we will focus on one of them in each newsletter. The first is the Chalk Pits made up of three chalk quarries that now provide a variety of habitats for wildlife. The three quarries once provided hard chalk to build Cambridge University colleges and lime for cement. Today they support a variety of habitats that harbour some rare plants and insects. Lime Kiln Close was abandoned approximately 200 years ago.

Where woodland has developed, large ash trees tower over field maples below. The cherry trees in Lime Kiln Close are descendants of trees that gave Cherry Hinton its name. In the warm, dry chalky soil of West Pit, two plants of great rarity grow. Moon carrot produces large heads of white flowers similar to cow parsley. Great pignut is similar but more delicate with a large underground tuber. You can still see the old limekilns in amongst the young woodland. East Pit was quarried up until the early 1980’s and is the largest of the three pits - with steep cliffs

UPDATE ON COLVILLE SCHOOL For those of us who don’t have children at Colville School we will have seen from afar the changes which have taken place at Colville over the last couple of years. We asked the Head Andrew Hastings to give us a little insight into what the children have to look forward to over the summer months. “The summer term is well under way, the sun came out briefly and now the rain is helping all of our lovely new landscaped areas to grow and flourish. As part of our extensive building project last year, which saw us provide an additional 9 classrooms, PE Hall, offices and multi-sensory room ready for the continued expansion of the school, we also created lots of new outdoor areas. This included a substancial amphitheatre, we may have gotten carried away a little with it, a story telling area with story telling chair, thousands of new plants and a large number of trees, we even snuck in a little hill with a tunnel going through it.

CHERRY HINTON BAPTIST CHURCH SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT THE FAMILY CENTRE

A better way to Bank A branch of the Credit Union is open each Tuesday between 2 and 4pm in the Family Centre in Fishers Lane. It is designed to be a better alternative to borrowing money from a loan shark. After saving for 13 weeks it is then possible to take out a loan at relatively low interest rates. A charge card for use over the internet is also available.

Friday Friends celebrates 5th Birthday The group for senior citizens at the Cherry Hinton Baptist Church Family Centre in Fishers Lane celebrated its 5th Birthday this Easter. It is open for 50 weeks of the year between 1.30 - 3.30pm each Friday. Typically there is a craft table, a knitting

table, a card table and a scrabble table. There is tea and cake, a general knowledge and a short epilogue. Each term there is an outing and also a roast meal. In addition, each month there is a Church at Lunch time which is specifically designed for senior citizens. New members are always welcome.

23rd Annual Holiday Bible Club for Children

Children are now coming to the summer Holiday Club in Cherry Hinton whose parents also came to Holiday club when they were young ! This year’s club will run from 23-27th July and have an Olympic theme (On Your Marks). Booking forms are sent home via schools.

Messy Bible Having preschool aged children is a messy and noisy business - it is difficult to find time for yourself. In addition to our long established and and very popular Messy Play on Tuesday Morning (9.15-11.15am), a new group has started at Cherry Hinton Baptist Church Family Centre each Wednesday morning between 10 and 11.30am where parents and carers can bring their preschool children who can use the Messy Play equipment, while the carers can spend time reading the bible and talking about how it applied to their messy lives.

JAZZ AND BRASS AT CHERRY HINTON HALL

This is a great afternoon and best of all it’s all free ! On selected Sundays from June to September from 3-5pm there will be a Jazz and Brass Band playing at Cherry Hinton Hall for you to enjoy. Each event is entirely FREE so just turn up, bring a picnic, enjoy the sounds and relax in the cooling summer breeze.

CHERRY HINTON LIONS RECRUITING NOW Cherry Hinton Lions FC is one of the largest established clubs within Cambridgeshire formed in 1983 we are able to offer football to girls and boys from the age of 6 to 17. Currently we have within the club 16 squads consisting of 8 mini soccer teams, 6 colts teams, 1 girls team and a Sunday mens team. As a club we have worked hard to attain Charter Standard Community Club Status, something of which we are extremely proud of, this being achieved through hard work and determination of our members. Each year Cherry Hinton Lions FC host a pre-season tournament, which is one of the biggest and best attended in the area, and we are proud to say one of the best sponsored and run. Teams visit from all over the region, not just Cambridge to enjoy this 2 day event. This year our tournament will be held on the 25/26 August 2012. Cherry Hinton Lions FC are also proud of their links with foreigh touring teams, having been approached by a number of clubs for friendly matches when they are on tour. THE CHERRY HINTON BOOK COMES TO THE LIBRARY What do you know about “Over the Hills to Cherry Hinton”? This beautiful book was produced by the Cherry Hinton W.I in the 1950’s. Perhaps you remember it being in the library and a page being turned every day? The book is returning to the village library in September for a visit so we would like to hear from anyone who can fill us in on its history. Tel 0798 0113808 or email chragroup@googlegroups.com

19th August Opus 17, Cherry Hinton Hall 23rd September Lakenheath Silver Band, Cherry Hinton Hall

Our U11 team have just returned from a trip to Instabul to take part in a football tournament - the only UK team to be invited. The trip was and outstanding success the team unfortunately lost in the semi final however aftr a play off between the 2 losing semi finalists we came away with 3rd place. Over the years it is great to see some of the players from our club go on to better things, like playing for Semi Professional Clubs, to playing for Premiership Clubs and even England Schoolboys. Finally we actively look to recruit new players and welcome the support of parents who may wish to get involved with our teams - all our managers/coaches are CRB checked and as a club we offer full support on training/development courses. If you wish to join a well established football team please contact us. Ann Auker (01223) 412308 ann.auker@ntlworld.com visit our website www.chlfc.co.uk

CHERRY HINTON RESIDENTS JUBILEE GIFT LOCAL SCHOOL CHILDREN GIVEN COMMEMORATIVE COIN

FRIENDS OF CHERRY HINTON ST ANDREW

The Cherry Hinton Residents joined with three local primary schools to provide each pupil with a commemorative coin as a reminder of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Many of the Committee remember receiving small mementos as part of school age celebrations including Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation and the Silver Jubilee and everyone still had their gift tucked safely away at home. With this in mind the Residents’ Association worked with three local schools to provide every pupil with a coin featuring the official jubilee logo. Thanks to the school and Residents’ Association fundraising events, support the The Marshalls Trust, Ventress Property Group, Cambridge Building Society and South Area Committee funding from the City Council we have been able to order 700 coins for delivery in June. We worked Rosemary Wheeler and Friends with Colville, Spinney and Bewick Bridge community and distributed the coins The Friends are now into their fourth in June once the children returned from their half term break. We hope that the year of fundraising. We are a group of children will hang on to their coins as a memory of their school years in the village.

non-church goers and members of St Andrew’s congregation who raise money to maintain, repair, restore and improve the church, the church centre Spring is for us an important time, and churchyard for the benefit of the digging and planting. As always our present and future community of time-table is dictated by the weather Cherry Hinton. I joined the Friends of St with questions like. Will we suffer some late frosts like we did last year? Oh yes we Andrew’s because I was a member of the Local History Society, which meets allotmenteers like farmers always have one ear listening to the weather forecast in the Church Centre. Even if you are not a churchgoer you may be one of the on the radio and one eye watching the 6000 people who have used St Andrews clouds in the sky. Do we believe the weather forecasters forecast? Not always over the past year.

CHERRY HINTON ALLOTMENT & GARDEN SOCIETY LTD Did you know that Cherry Hinton has its own very active allotment site situated parallel to the railway line at the top of Wenvoe Close? Admitted it is only a very small site with 32 plots and 42 members but we are a very enthusiastic group. Most weekends and summer evenings the members who originate from many countries, English and Chinese being the predominant nationalities working alongside French, Lituanian and Mauritian can be seen and heard busily tending their plots. Three times a year plot tending is abandoned and members get together for an informal barbeque and social event. Here we enjoy fresh picked Chinese style food cooked in the open air. Sometimes we sing, play musical instruments, have a bonfire always enjoying each others company. Families now play a big part in our membership and since the building of our new “Compostable Toilet” paid for in part by a grant from the City Council it is now possible for our member families with young children to spend longer enjoying their allotment hobby.

When it comes to weather forecasting you can’t beat the old methods. A stick fastened to a wall. If its wet it’s raining, if not it is dry. Crows flying low means gale force winds. Iced up water tanks means the temperature is below freezing. We are all experts at forecating yesterdays weather!

Despite all this our allotment site this spring was as pretty as a picture. The pink and white fruit tree blossom coupled with the red, blue and yellow of the spring flowers, with the bonus of that special green colour of the grass paths awakening from the dorman winter. Somehow all this makes the back aches, the creaky knees and the stiff necks which we know if to come all worth while. Regards Jim Varney.

CHERRY HINTON LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY This year we have had talks about brick yards in West Cambridgeshire, the AngloSaxon Chronicle, Denny Abbey and Eglantyne Jebb. I think that none of us in the hall had known anything about Eglantyne Jebb, who at one time lived in Cambridge. Clare Mulley, her biographer, was a dynamic speaker, full of enthusiasm for her subject who had started the Save the Children Fund. Where possible all the talks have a connection with Cambridge. Our May talk on Monday 28th saw a return of re-enactor Ellion Harris from the Company of St Jude who many of you may have seen near the History Tent at the Cherry Hinton Festival. His talk was entitled “Cherry Hinton, Cambridgeshire and England in the 15th Century” Usually we try to arrange 3 excursions a year again focused on local sites of interest. Ron English, one of our members has arranged several visits to Cambridge Colleges. In April the excursion included a visit to an area on the roofs of Sainsbury’s, Heffer’s, The Blue Boar and to other buildings owned by Trinity called the Podium, which the public never see. In August, Ron has arranged a visit to St Ives to include the Chapel on the Bridge and a trip down the river. We are also hoping to vist Denny Abbey and the Farmland Museum to follow up March’s talk by Chris Leuchars, Education Officer. If you would like to join us for one of our talks we meet at 7.30pm on the last Monday of the month (except August and December) at St Andrew’s church Centre. Guest membership for one talk costs £2.50 Membership for the year is £10 single and £18 couples. Mo Child, (Progamme and Excursions Officer)

CHERRY HINTON HALL MASTER PLAN PROJECT Visitors to the hall will have noticed significant changes to the landscape over the past 6 months. These works form the first phase of a site wide plan to enhance this special park for both people and wildlife. A master plan was drawn up following consultation with key stake holders, including the Friends of Cherry Hinton Hall. The first phase of the Master Plan Project had a key priority, to bring the disused and fenced off central area (formerly glass houses) into the park for the public to use. During March this area had the fence and vegetation boundaries removed with the area being levelled and grass seeded to create a large open space in the centre of the park. The creation of this open area is essentially a blank canvas and it is anticipated that this will ultimately enable more complex elements of the plan to be delivered during the secondard phase without further major earthworks required. The plan also recognises the importance of the hall for local wildlife and how it forms part of a wider network of natural sites linking Cherry Hinton Pits Local Nature Reserves with the Norman Cemebt Pits, Coldham’s and Stourbridge Common. A key aim is to restore the internationally rare chalk stream habitat which rises at Giants Grave and flows through the hall and along Snakey Path. Again as part of the first phase of work, the selective removal and coppicing of overgrown scrub and self set trees along the watercourse will allow more light, benefiting aquatic plants and reducing leaf litter from forming thick silts. This summer the existing channel will be narrowed using coir (Coconut fibre) rolls, enabling a faster flow that will help remove silt and expose the gravel bed, improving the habitat for aquatic, insects, fish such as bullheads and stone loaches and the predatory Kingfisher. New native trees and shrub plating has begun with the hedgerow along Dawes Lane and will ultimately increase the breeding and foraging habitat for resident and migrant birds, insects and mammals across the site. For further details please contact The Cambridge City Council Open Space Officer - Anthony French (01223 457000) or anthony.french@cambridge.gov.uk Guy Belcher MIEEM Nature Conservation Officer.
