History of Cherry Hinton Cherry Hinton used to consist of two seperate settlements called Church End and Mill End. Church End developed on the higher ground to the north close to a spring line, which provided fresh water. Mill End developed in the south around the large natural spring pool known locally as Giant’s Grave or Spring Head, providing an excellent supply of fresh water. Drainage of the marshy land where the shops are today in the 1800’s and the railway arriving in 1852 with a station in-between Church End and Mill End, helped draw the two seperate village centres together along the new High Street. The area as a whole was known as Hinton, until sometime in the mid 1500’s when the abundance of cherry trees in the area gave Hinton the prefix of Cherry. The Church of St Andrew’s at Church End dates from around 1100. Since the 1200’s Peterhouse College has been closely connected to the Church and has helped provide many of the vicars there. At Church End the triangular village green lay just east of the old Rosemary Branch in front of Mafeking Cottage. There were closely related manors called Uphall manor and Mallets Manor in Church End dating from around 1100. Mill End had at least one watermill and the original blacksmith was situated somewhere close to the present post office. By the 1800’s the smithy had moved to the corner of Forest Road and Mill End Road where the building now a garage can still be seen. The village green at Mill End surrounded Giant’s Grave and stretched north down the present High Street beneath the Unicorn Pub. Mill End also had two manors, Rectory manor and Netherhall Manor. The two main occupations in the village were farming and laundry. The women of the village took in the laundry from the Colleges and the undergraduates. Cambridge Colleges extracted clunch to use for their buildings; some was also used at Ely Cathedral. There was a thriving clunch and lime burning industry in Cherry Hinton particularly at the site of The Spinney between Cherry Hinton Road, Queen Edith’s Way and Lime Kiln Hill. The industry was at its peak during the medieval period and continued up until the early 1900’s. The Spinney, East Pit and West Pit are now nature reserves. By the late 1800’s the Pamplin Brothers had introduced steam ploughing to the village and ran a steam plough works which continued until the 1930’s. In 1927 Elijah Pamplin gave land between the High Street and Leete Road to be maintained as a meadow, for use by the villagers as a recreation ground. After the Second World War the site was also designated as a war memorial. In the early nineteenth century John Okes, a surgeon at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge bought up large portions of land in Cherry Hinton much of which he used for his family home - Cherry Hinton Hall. Cherry Hinton Hall was purchased by Cambridge City Council in 1937 and is the venue for the annual Cambridge Folk Festival. Cherry Hinton grew rapidly from the late 1800’s. The Baptist Church, on the corner of the High Street was built in 1883. Reverend Bewick Bridge built the first school in the village in 1818 and the almshouses were rebuilt in Mill End next to the smithy in the 1880’s. The area between Hills Road and Cherry Hinton Road was developed in the late 1800’s creating ‘New Cherry Hinton’ and the cement companies began large scale quarrying in and around Cherry Hinton Michelle Bullivant - www.michellebullivant.com Photos reproduced with kind permission of The Cambridge Collection

Cherry Hinton Hall is home to one of the longest running and most famous folk festivals. The story began in 1964 with a line up including Paul Simon and organised by Ken Woolard who remained Festival organiser and artistic director up until his death in 1993. The list of performers who have appeared reads like a who’s who and the Festival has been a launching pad for many now well know artists. To this day the Festival embodies the same philosophy from the early days applying the simple idea of providing the best for audience and artists alike. The event runs at the end of July, for further information and tickets see www.cambridgefolkfestival.co.uk

What Does our Village Sign mean? Much of our history is summarised by the village sign which is a Cherry Tree bearing a quartered shield showing Cherry Hinton activities. Top left shows a steam ploughing engine once used by local farmers; bottom left shows how the village also provided a washing service to the Cambridge college. Bottom right is the village church of St Andrew’s and top right reminds us that the Saffron Crocus was once grown here. The lines down the middle represent the High Street and in the very centre you will find the railway barriers with the railway line represented as track ways across the centre of the shield Michelle Bullivant
