Using The HUB | Calendars These days, more people are relying on a personal calendar to stay organized. The Hub has some great calendar tools to help you stay connected to important dates and events at FAC.

No registration is necessary! Just join us!

First, each group you’re involved with has its own event calendar feature. Just log in at www.myfacHUB.org and click on any of your groups to see that group’s events.

Next Steps

The Hub can also combine all those group calendars into a single view, My Calendar. When logged in, look for the calendar icon to the left to see this as well as the church-wide and public calendars. The My Calendar feature is a very handy tool for you to sync to your phone or tablet.

After attending a Guest Reception, explore the beliefs, values, and practices of our church. The next cycle of three meetings will begin on May 17 just after the 11:00 worship service. Lunch provided! Register at www.myfac.org/next steps. Walkins are welcome! Contact Pastor Glenn Kantner for more information, glenn@myfac.org.

To sync any calendar from The Hub, click Actions at the top right of the month view, then click Subscribe to This Calendar. When an event is added or changed in any of your groups, your synched calendar will be automatically updated with the newest information without the need to manually update your schedule. As always, feel free to contact Chris Rose, chrisrose@myfac.org, for help with managing your calendars on The Hub or with any other questions about The Hub.

Prayer

The Key to a Fruitful Life This month, we will celebrate the National Day of Prayer. We will be having a special prayer service followed by a 48-hour prayer vigil at our church. Why? Because we need it, and our country needs it.

48

You and I are missionaries to America, chosen and selected by Jesus Christ to make a difference in this culture by spreading the Gospel and making disciples. In John 15:16, Jesus says to His original disciples a truth that applies directly to us as Christ’s disciples today. He says, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that your fruit should abide so that whatever you ask of the Father in my name He may give it to you.” I believe that one of the big reasons we often feel our prayers are malfunctioning is that we don’t pray for the right things because we don’t see ourselves as being on a mission as Jesus sees us. In John 15:16, it’s as though Jesus is saying I gave you a mission, now use the biggest and best tool at your disposal to fulfill your mission ― prayer. James 4:3 teaches us that same idea that prayer is the key to finding the fulfillment in life we all desire. Prayer should be the first step in our strategy to make a difference with our lives or, as Jesus puts it, to “bear fruit.” So I hope you find time to join us in our prayer service on May 7 at 7:00 p.m. We all need it and so does our nation. My hope and prayer for everyone in our church is that you will have a fruitful life and make a big difference in this world. Prayer is where we need to put our efforts to see the changes personally and nationally that we so desperately desire. Love never fails,

Pastor Marty

HOURS OF PRAYER AT FAC Begins Thurs., May 7, 7:00 p.m.

Beginning with a one and a half hour gathering for the National Day of Prayer on Thurs., May 7, at 7:00 p.m., we will have 48 hours of prayer for our members, leaders, our ministries, our communities, our nation, and our world. The Thursday evening meeting will include songs and prayer. Please join us as we pray with those across our nation who are participating in the National Day of Prayer. We will be continuing with half-hour prayer slots for a time period of 48 hours, from May 7 at 9:00 p.m. through May 9 at 6:00 p.m. Please sign up now for your slot. (See the Information Box below.) Areas of the church will be labeled so as you go through the building, you can stop and pray for those ministries. You will also receive a prayer guide.

Why Are We Doing a 48-hour Prayer Vigil?

There are many Biblical instructions regarding our need for prayer. Here are just a few for us to consider: • I Thessalonians 5:17 tells us to “Keep on praying.” [NLT] • Philippians 4:6-7 says, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” [NLT] • In Ephesians 6, it says, “Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.” [NLT] We are to live in an awareness that God is with us and actively involved and engaged in our thoughts and actions. When our thoughts turn to worry, fear, discouragement, and anger, we are to consciously and quickly turn every thought into prayer and every prayer into thanksgiving. We want to connect to God through prayer. It is the most important thing we can do in every situation.

For More Information To Register to Pray • If you would be interested in serving as a host/hostess for those coming to pray, contact Greg Davies at gtdavies86@gmail.com. • For more information about 48 Hours of Prayer at FAC, contact Pastor Glenn Kantner, glenn@myfac.org, or 609-953-7333, x106. • To sign up for a one-half hour time slot, go to www.myfac.org/pray. Encouragement for the

Journey

laurieb@myfac.org

Rejoice, Rejoice darkness comes surrounding but we are children of the light pain it comes and twists its knife but we have hope that overcomes so we sing this song again rejoice rejoice our God already has the victory rejoice rejoice our suffering is momentary rejoice rejoice he is coming to set us free the words of death come lying but we are clothed in truth and life

On

this journey that I’m walking with Jesus, one of the things that He uses often to encourage and instruct me is music. I love music. There’s a place in my soul that is touched so deeply by music. Jesus knows this. He made me this way. But still it surprises me every time He sends along a special song just when I needed it most.

This has been happening a lot lately because I’ve been struggling with grief as I’m contemplating the death of several dear friends. During these last weeks, God has sent me a few different encouragements through song. First it was from one of my favorites, Margaret Becker, “Surrender” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOqsevRkbfo). “You and I ― we still believe because We have seen our own transformation We’re old enough, we understand the crush Is not for death but for destination” On another day it was from Sara Groves, “Less Like Scars” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CjbCcyIiQw). “And in your hands the pain and hurt Look less like scars and more like character”

fear it comes destroying but we have love that overcomes we do believe in the highest love he will redeem, he does set free we stand in the in between waiting whether pain or whether joy there is a good God of love we stand in the in between rejoicing

But just this week was the most beautiful. I was really struggling with God one morning ― feeling such despair about the grief I was facing. I had written in my journal about some of my wrestling before I left the house and then asked Him to send me some encouraging words through music that day. And wouldn’t you know, up popped this song from my all-time favorite musician, Jeana Master, (my daughter!) “Rejoice, Rejoice” (http://songsforsinging.bandcamp.com/album/songs-for-singing). God is using these words to help me rejoice in this “in between” life that we are all living. I’m learning to see the beauty of His redemption in places where I wasn’t expecting it. And that’s something to rejoice about!

Ministry Profile:

Serenity Support Group

“Addiction touches so many families,” said Joan. “Family members suffer the same physical and emotional symptoms the addict does, such as sickness, headaches, loss of appetite, inability to concentrate, stress, financial problems, and more. The list is endless. When my son moved back into my house after rehab, suspicion, worry, and codependency consumed me. The Serenity Support Group helped me cope and put the pieces of my life back together.” FAC recognizes that there’s a big need for a support group in the community for the friends and families of people who are affected by the drug and alcohol epidemic. The Serenity Support Group is dedicated to helping these individuals learn how God's promises for a peaceful future can be realized in a safe and anonymous environment through using Scripture verses. The ministry has impacted numerous people’s lives and includes a powerful program that’s based on the 12 steps of AA and the Life Recovery Bible. Serenity Group member, Cathy, shared, “I feel the group is an important part of FAC because people live their lives with secrets, and God can’t bless a secret. Coming to this group allows you to be vulnerable and accepted in spite of what you’re dealing with. It’s freeing and allows you to have a

deeper relationship with God because you’re not distant due to your guilty feelings. It helps to reinstate that you are loved and how to empower yourself while dealing with this sickness.” Currently, Joyce Gilmore co-facilitates the Serenity Support Group with her friend Sue Sager. “My experience of being married to an alcoholic for almost 20 years gave me the ability to relate to people who have been living with the shame, pain, and frustration of addiction,” explained Joyce. “My addiction to him was called co-dependency.” Joyce and Sue make a good team co-facilitating the Serenity Group. Sue became involved with the ministry through the discovery of her daughter’s addiction to opiates and eventually heroin. “While her daughter is now sober, Sue’s —Continued on p 10

contribution to the leadership of the group is very valuable,” said Joyce. “Sue brings a lot of experience and wisdom in dealing with addiction. She has seen her daughter through multiple rehabs and ultimate healing through Christ. Sue provides hope and input on what to expect and how she handled it.” Joyce and Sue have seen many transitions since the Serenity Group started. In the beginning, most of the attendees were impacted by someone’s alcohol addiction and many were women. Then there was a mix of addictions such as cutting, overeating, anorexia, and sex addictions.

“ I didn't understand what was

going on. I was trying to control it and keep her alive ― so I thought. ” “Over time the types of addictions changed again, and we saw families that were affected by drugs, which were mainly opiates and then heroin,” Joyce said. “Heroin is cheap and readily available. It has become the drug of choice of the young people in the area. Recently we saw another trend; husbands that were witnessing their wives addiction to alcohol.”

Is the Serenity Support Group right for you? A. Does your loved one have a problem with alcohol? 1. Do they lose time from work? 2. Do they have difficulty sleeping? 3. Do they drink alone? 4. Do they keep a “stash” of alcohol hidden? 5. Do they initially take a large gulp of alcohol (in order to get drunk/feel good)? 6. Is your home life unhappy and are you experiencing relationship issues? 7. Is drinking affecting his/her reputation? 8. Do they feel a craving for a drink at a specific time daily?

However, Joyce and Sue are firm believers in the transforming power of Jesus and have seen Him at work in the lives of the group members. “I wish I had attended this group three years ago,” said Don. “My life today might have been very different if I had sound guidance during my wife's crisis. I didn't understand what was going on. I was trying to control it and keep her alive ― so I thought. However, I'm happy to report that with Christ first in my life, I'm going to be okay.”

9. Do they only want to go to restaurants that serve alcohol?

Sandy shared, “Serenity Support has shown me that I’m not alone. Having a family member with a substance abuse problem has such a stigma attached to it. It leaves you feeling so alone. While my friends and family members were talking about what colleges their children are deciding upon, my son had just been arrested for the second time. I had no idea if he was even going to graduate. Yet, I sat and smiled and pretended I was just as excited about all the senior year milestones. My life was full of secrets and shame.”

2. Is drinking jeopardizing their job and creating 1 financial difficulties?

Then Sandy decided to walk into the Serenity Support Group. By the end of her first meeting, she knew it was where she belonged. “The members of this group were so warm and welcoming,” said Sandy. “For the first time in a few years, I had hope. I began a new walk with God. I surrendered myself completely to Him as well as handed my son over to Him.”

1. Shortness of breath

Susan said, “The Serenity Group has given me a place to go where I can feel comforted going through all the emotions and fears I have with my loved one’s addiction. Although we are all at different stages and our loved ones may suffer from different addictions, the common denominator is that we’re not alone and this is a safe and peaceful place.” Jane is another individual who’s thankful for the Serenity Group. She said, “While praying, I was trying to control the uncontrollable situation. Being married to an alcoholic was devastating! All of my dreams of our future

0. Do they express remorse after they have 1 gotten drunk? 1. Have they experienced complete loss of memory 1 as a result of drinking?

B. Does your loved one have a problem with prescription drugs/heroin? Do they suffer from any of the following symptoms? 2. Dry mouth 3. Constricted (small) pupils 4. Sudden changes in behavior or actions (mood swings) 5. Disorientation 6. Cycles of hyper-alertness followed by suddenly nodding off 7. Droopy appearance, as if extremities are heavy 8. Lying or other deceptive behavior

9. Avoiding eye contact, or distant field of vision 10. Substantial increases in time spent sleeping 1. Increase in slurred, garbled, or incoherent 1 speech 2. Sudden worsening of performance in school or 1 work, including expulsion or loss of jobs 3. Decreasing attention to hygiene and physical 1 appearance (weight loss, face breakouts) 4. Loss of motivation and apathy toward future 1 goals 5. Withdrawal from friends and family, instead 1 spending time with new friends 16. Lack of interest in hobbies and favorite activities 7. Repeatedly stealing or borrowing money from 1 loved ones, or unexplained absence of valuables 8. Hostile behaviors toward loved ones, including 1 blaming them for withdrawal or broken commitments 9. Regular comments indicating a decline in self- 1 esteem or worsening body image 0. Wearing long pants or long sleeves to hide 2 needle marks The above signs are not unique to heroin abuse. More definitive warning signs of heroin abuse include possession of paraphernalia used to prepare, inject, or consume heroin such as:

were disappearing. He wasn’t the father I wanted our children to have or the husband I desired to be with in his active addiction. However, I loved him, and I wanted to have hope. I wanted to have a happily ever after for our family and I wasn’t ready to give up.” Jane realized trying to control an uncontrollable person was getting her nowhere. It was just driving her crazy. Walking into the group was like a weight was lifted off of her shoulders. She was relieved to know that she wasn’t alone and others have been through similar events. Knowing the Biblical principles she needed to go through the 12 Steps of AA herself, having others pray for her, and allowing God to take the lead, made her feel lighter. “I needed to know I can’t, but God can,” said Jane. “I needed to let go and let God work. I needed to draw boundary lines of acceptable and unacceptable behaviors. I needed to share and not hide in the ugly situation. I learned to pray the impossible prayers. I had to let God do the work while I devoted myself to His Word and time with other Believers. I now have a sober husband for more than two years, and I’m living one day at a time. The Serenity Support Group co-facilitators are amazed at how God has been using the ministry to give encouragement, strength, support, and love to individuals who have friends or family members struggling with addictive behaviors. Joyce added, “We recognize that there are many others within the FAC community and outside the church who are in need of a touch from God when it comes to the impact of addiction in their lives. If you think your loved one has a problem with alcohol, prescription drugs, heroin or other addictions, the Serenity Support Group is there for you.” ■ * All names except those of the facilitators have been changed.

YOUTH IMPACT Grades 9-12

Recent Highlights from

Lake Champion We recently took high school students and leaders up to Lake Champion for our annual district retreat. It was a great weekend where we were challenged about being fearless in our relationship with Christ. One of the highlights for the weekend was Saturday night when several of our students stood to receive Christ and to recommit to Him! We are praying that God will continue to use the impact that this weekend had in the life of each student who attended.

For this event, we are partnering with several other local youth ministries. The event will be held at Marlton Assembly of God. Cost is $10. There is a free presentation for parents from 6:30 to 7:00 before the event, but parents are encouraged to buy a ticket and stay for the program. More information is available in the Welcome Center. going to bolivia In May of 2015, a team representing our Women’s Ministry will be departing for Santa Cruz, Bolivia, to pursue a partnership with Remember Nhu, an organization that works to prevent the exploitation of children in the sex trade industry throughout the world. Remember Nhu exists to meet the physical, educational, emotional, and spiritual needs of high risk children through homes it currently operates in Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Gambia, Senegal, Kenya, and Bolivia. The name, Remember Nhu, stems from the first employee ever for this organization. Nhu came from Cambodia and was sold to men by her grandmother. Through a series of events and an encounter with Christ, God put Nhu on a path of restoration, and she called a Christian and Missionary Alliance pastor, Carl Ralston, to begin the ministry. Carl Ralston, founder of Remember Nhu, shared his mission, “We believe the innocence of childhood is an inalienable right. Once lost, it can never be restored. Our children come to us before they are exposed to the horrors of the sex trade and mature into the happy, healthy young adults they were intended to be.” Monika Tockstein, Heart to Heart coordinator, realized that God was speaking to her when she first encountered Remember Nhu. “I don't know how you can hear these numbers and then see these precious faces and not feel something deep within you cry out that something must be done. The Bible is clear about the role of the Church regarding justice, and this issue cries out for justice. Not only is this issue horrific, it resonates even more to me personally as a wife who cannot have children to think of how that amazing blessing of having a child could end up like this. This is a complicated issue in a fallen world. It is also an opportunity for the Church to step in and stop this. If we, the Church, do this well, the world will notice. I want us to be a testimony to our fallen world that there is hope. We can stop this, and we can do it because of the power of our Lord and Savior.” This vision team will be visiting a new site for Remember Nhu in Bolivia. While there, the team will be supporting missionaries on the field, Peter and Cali Ledger. The desire is to open a partnership and give women at FAC the opportunity to engage in the partnership and go! ■

• Right now, 1.2 million children are sold into the sex trade each year. • Right now, 27 million are enslaved in human trafficking. • Right now, the average age of a trafficking victim is 12. There are many ways you can participate and be a part of this exciting new adventure. • Pray for the team, for their safety, for boldness in Christ, and for unity as they begin this new journey. • You can offer financial support. If you wish to contribute to the cost of this trip, you can donate at www.myfac.org/tripsupport. • Follow the team and keep up to date on all that God is doing: www.facebook.com/FACBolivia.

Good for the Goose Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. [James 1:3-4, ESV] It’s a great verse, right? How many times have you used it to encourage a brother in a tough place? I know I’ve said it. A lot. “Hey pal, I know life is hard right now, but James 1:3-4 says to ‘Count it all joy . . . ‘” And so it goes. But on my rough days, truth be told, I struggle with the verse. All? Really, all? A-L-L?

Discussion Questions: What part of “all” do you usually struggle with? What do you need to do to hand the rest over to God? When will you do it and who will you invite into the process?

Frankly, when the days are rough, it’s difficult for me to find any joy, let alone count all of it for joy. But that’s the gift of the verse. James doesn’t say, “Listen, today’s a tough one. Look for the little things so you can hold on to hope.” He says, “No matter how bad it is, count every single thing that you encounter for joy in Christ.” Why? Because testing produces something so good and enduring that hope is the ultimate result. And hope does not disappoint. Yours in the fight to build men who build men, Pastor Erik Rebstock

Stories from Their Recent Missions Trip We have a few stories to share from our most recent missions adventure to Lephalale, South Africa to train leaders, minister to kids, and serve the poor. Bernice Hall I saw God working at the One Stop Center in Marapong, a poor town near Lephalale, as I witnessed relationships being made. The director, Kate, had asked for a team to come back to visit them again. Jody Adams showed many of the children pictures which he had taken there last year. They loved seeing themselves in those pictures and in new pictures being taken that day. We did a Zonk game with them in which they had to answer Bible questions. Several of the boys sitting close to me knew many of the answers. I asked how they learned about the Bible, and they replied it was at the center, which they go to three times a week after school. They are helped with their homework and also fed a healthy meal each time they are there. Jenn Dallow will continue going there on a weekly basis. I was so thrilled to see how well the children were loved and cared for by the staff and to know that they are learning about Jesus!

Sally Brinkerhoff During the Leadership Institute at Living Waters Church while in a dinner break between the last two sessions, I ended up sitting outside on a small cement porch with five or six of the members who had attended. The biggest change was that I didn’t feel like the ‘outsider.’ I was part of the group. Not only did I

So it was great to go back and experience their appreciation and openness once again. On our previous visit, I met a guy also named Jim. He was one of the students who communicated his heart well and spent some considerable time expressing his gratitude to us. I was able to reconnect with Jim, and we had

Because you are here, people will come alive! ask questions about them, but they also asked things about me. The amazing thing is that we realized that even though we come from different places, as Christians, we really do have a lot in common. Even if we don’t see each other again here on earth, one day we will see each other in heaven! After that, we went in for the last session ― a time for the students to work together to demonstrate how they might apply what they had learned. What a thrill to open up the door for these people to use their gifts and talents for God. My prayer is that each one of us ― in Africa and in the US ― will be open and willing to use our abilities to be better ambassadors for Him.

Jim Walter I saw God at work in so many ways on this trip. One of the things that stands out to me was our visit to the high school in Shongoane. We visited this school in August of 2013 and found the students to be very open and extremely appreciative. They were shocked that of all the places we would go in South Africa, God led us to them. This school is out in the tribal land, and the students are marginalized due to their underprivileged position and rural community. The students begged us to come back but feared we wouldn’t.

quite the reunion. I introduced Jim to Jenn Dallow and explained that she was our new intern in SA and would be coming back to his school on a regular basis during the next six months. Jim was overwhelmed with this news and vowed to help Jenn in any way he could. His expressions of appreciation and gratefulness to Jenn were truly unbelievable. In his enthusiastic way, Jim said to Jenn, “Because you are here, people will come alive!” Jenn and I could hardly contain our emotions with that proclamation. Jenn had been struggling with all the coordination and effort in getting things started in the schools, and this statement from a student was exactly what she needed. And it is what all of us need to hear. When we serve the Lord, “Because we are there, people will come alive!”

Kurt Jarvis The opportunities to impact South Africa are unlimited. The new people in the institute were a reminder that interest in learning how to be a solid leader in God’s harvest field is still high. This was an incredibly interactive group who just consumed the class material. Another highlight was a school rally in a remote village where a white face is virtually never seen and where no one ever takes a special activity like this to

them. Jenn was privileged to pray with some students who wanted to commit themselves to be followers of Jesus.

Tammy Walter We witnessed God at work in many ways during our FASA trip, but one I’d like to mention will be forever burned in my memory. We had held a FASA Leadership Training Institute for two weeks in a row, teaching five classes per week. There were folks representing five area churches that came, and some came every single session and didn’t miss one. At the end, the participants were asked to say something to the FASA team to thank them for coming and sharing the training with them. One gentleman in particular, named Godfrey, had attended every single session and had completed his training and received his certificate. His words of thanks were short because English is probably his third or fourth language, but I will remember them forever. He thanked us for coming all the way to South Africa, and then he said, “Before you came, we were not knowing. But now we know.” I can just hear him say it in his broken English, but it was profound. If we hadn’t come, they wouldn’t know! God used the small offering of our time and efforts to teach these people some Biblical principles of leadership and how to use their gifts to further His Kingdom. We are praising God for using us to teach and empower the people of Lephalale to step up and be leaders in their community! ■

Providing transportation to FAC

You may not realize it but there are people who would like to be a part of our church family, but they can’t because they don’t have transportation to and from the church. We can fix this! We’re forming a team of people who are willing to provide rides to and from the church for one or two days a month. If you would like to join the team, please contact Jim Hogan to discuss what would work for you.

Pedal for Promise Ride

Help us support UrbanPromise, Camden May 9

Twenty-six years ago, the vision and mission of UrbanPromise was conceived in a church basement in East Camden, NJ. A small group of college missionaries created a summer camp for neighborhood children, providing a safe, loving, fun and creative place for local youth to escape dangerous city streets. The response from the community was overwhelmingly enthusiastic. Young people attended in droves, demonstrating a hunger to engage in activities that challenged academic, spiritual, and social growth. UrbanPromise has since diversified its programs to include two schools, job training, after-school programs, boat building, expeditionary and experiential learning, college tours, faith development opportunities, and a host of other activities. But the core of UrbanPromise will always be about relationships and the message that every child and teen is wonderfully created in the image of God.

For More Information For more information about the event and to register go to http:// urbanpromisecamden.org/pedal and you can join the FAC bike team by choosing Team FAC. You can also make a contribution for a rider on the same site. If you have questions, contact John Bahm, jcbahm@yahoo.com, or Tom Calisterio, tommyc61@verizon.net.

Our church family has been supporting UrbanPromise by participating in this ride for 10 years. There will be three mileage options ― 15 miles, 30 miles, or metric century ― for cyclists of all abilities and ages. Each course begins and ends at Olson Middle School and loops through scenic Burlington County. There is a lunch at the finish and exciting fundraising incentives.
