THE COACHING CORNER

STRATEGIES Passive Opposition With no opponents in place who do not attempt to beat the performers. This gives a feel of the situation and is useful for beginners who still need time to develop their techniques.

Pressure Training

Working hard for a long time, or having to react very quickly imitates competition. This makes these drills very good for experienced performances.

Unopposed

With no opposition, giving time to learn techniques and practice skills.

Active Opposition The opposition actively try to tackle, intercept or stop the performers succeeding.

JANUARY 2016 | ISSUE 01

COACHING PHILOSOPHY… I am a playercentered coach who focuses on professionalism, responsibility, and accountability within the framework of each team I work with. Creating a culture of excellence is what I strive for every day. I believe that each training session should include physical, tactical, technical, and mental components that challenge the players to perform at a high level. Unless you do the right things every day, you will not produce the performances you want. I am a student of the game and am always looking for new ways to improve and get better. Coaches are culture in action and I firmly believe that we are judged by our actions and the actions of our players. 03 COACHES MOST ADMIRED… Mickey Harte (Gaelic Football) and Phil Jackson (Basketball) FAVORITE BOOK… ‘Quiet Strength’ by Tony Dungy FAVORITE ATHLETE… Michael Jordan past and Rory McIlroy present FAVORITE QUOTE… “It’s the repetition of affirmations that leads to belief. And once that belief becomes a deep conviction, things begin to happen.” Muhammad Ali PERSONAL LIFE… Married Erin Curneen in June, 2012, in Northern Ireland, and currently live in Bakersfield, CA.

NUTRITION FOR SPORTS PERFORMANCE 'UNLEASH YOUR POTENTIAL' Just as a car runs best with a full tank of gas, your body needs the right kind of fuel from food and drink. A balance of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, minerals, vitamins and water, will give your body what it needs for peak performance. I could sit here all day, and explain to you the scientific reasons why you need each macronutrient as much as you do and which ones are best at what specific time. I'm not going to do this, if it's one thing that has stayed with me throughout my Career in Sports and Nutrition, it's that 'simplicity is often best.' Using this method, there are 4 Nutritional rules to abide by which will cater for optimal performance in your chosen sport or in day to day life. These are as follows: 1. Stay hydrated 2. Fuel your body 3. Promote good recovery after exercise 4. Have a balanced diet

What if I was to tell you, we can provide these 4 fundamental rules through one product? This simple product being in the form of a nutritious shake. I mean, something that is good enough for one of the greatest athletes on this planet, is surely good enough for regular people like you and I.... Right? A product with a proven track record of optimising performance along with being affordable and easy to use, is why so many athletes and teams are using these worldwide today. "I want to share my experiences of HERBALIFE products with people, especially young people just starting out in sports. Most importantly, I want to be honest about it. I believe HERBALIFE offers exceptional products, and by using them, athletes will have an Formula 1 SPORT Nutritious shake for Athletes: advantage." ~ Cristiano Ronaldo * Contains 18g of protein which supports the growth of lean muscle mass. * Contains both Casein and Whey protein, both high quality dairy proteins. * 219 calories per serving to help manage your calorific intake. * Unique proteincarbohydrate blend with fibre and essential vitamins and minerals. * Vitamins C,E and selenium help to protect the body's cells from oxidative stress.

LIAM O'NEILL By The Coaching Network LIAM O'NEILL IS A FORMER FOOTBALLER AND NOW TURNED COACH AT NATIONAL NORTH SIDE CORBY TOWN! Firstly, we would like to thank Liam for giving up his time and answering our questions and congratulate him on his move to Corby Town as assistant manager this week!

How do you know Corby Manager Tommy Wright? I'v known Tommy several years after meeting whilst doing a coaching badge with the PFA at Cheltenham . We hit it off straight away on and off the pitch and although haven't worked together previously we have been in regular contact ever since . We have the same beliefs and principles in how we want the game to be played so as soon as he offered me the role assisting him at Corby Town it was a no brainier! Was Coaching always an ambition of yours? Yeah coaching and managing was always going to be my next step after hanging up my boots. Id always thought I'd have the enthusiasm to continue in football in that capacity it was just whether someone would give me the opportunity to have a crack at it especially at semi pro levels. I think Iv played , and watched enough games and learnt plenty some good some not so good to be able to offer an opinion ,advice and some knowledge to the younger generation of player I guess .

THE COACHING NETWORK

How was the transition from playing to coaching? Well I had come to the end of 4 or 5 successful seasons at Banbury Utd in the Southern Premier Div and at 33 went to play for a friend of mine Martin Sockett who was gaffer at Bedworth Utd in the league below , I'd had 2 ankle operations the year before (absolute glass ankles! )so it was catching up on me .Aswell as playing there I was coaching the under 18s .Martin unfortunately parted company with the club and as the most experienced player was asked to take over in a temporary capacity which i excepted . One week I was playing the next I was picking the team . I pretty much knew it'd be my last season playing with my ankle issues so I made the most out of the situation and unconsciously really just didn't ever pick myself to play even though I could still have played . I only played probably half a dozen games during the next 2 1/2 years as manager at The Oval basically when numbers or budgets dictated it . Handling the transition for me was pretty simple, being thrown in at the deep end 2nd bottom of the southern league midland div at 33 gave me no time to contemplate stopping playing regularly if I'm bluntly honest . I just dug in and worked hard and stayed up comfortably. What is your favourite training drill/skill game and why? Favourite session is a possession based game 4v4 , 2 keepers , 2 players behind one goal at one end and two players either side of the pitch as wide men . One team has to play 5 passes before they can score but can only score once they've played into a end player ( playing through the pitch) ... The other team have to make 5 passes but must use either of the wide men before scoring ...in a nutshell one team has to switch the play before scoring the other has to play up through the pitch before scoring . Develop it the by having to use both wide players and the other team both end players ... What has been your biggest achievement in your career so far? My biggest achievements in management / coaching so far was taking Bedworth Utd (SLPrem Division) to the FA Cup 4th Qual round losing away to York City in 2009 in my 1st managers job at 33... And then as Assistant manager at Leamington FC in 2013 winning the Southern League Premier Division Championship followed by finishing 12th in our first season in The Vanarama Conference North the season after. What would you say to anyone who wants to get into football coaching? Try not to be text book / robotic coach . You have to be innovative and be expressive with your mannerisms when trying to get your point across in my opinion . But importantly try not to over complicate your sessions . Too many coaches are trying to re-invent the wheel these days. Who has been the best coach / manager you have worked under in your career? It's tough this one but the Best coach I'd played under was Frank Upton when I was at Cheltenham Town , top drawer coach but as a man manager has to be Kevin Brock for his man management skills.

Check out Liam's Best XI of players he's played, coached and managed with: GOALKEEPER - Alan Nicholls / LEFT BACK - Kevin Willetts / CENTRE BACK - Terry Angus / CENTRE BACK - Gerrard Carr / RIGHT BACK - Ryan Higgins / CENTRE MIDFIELD - Paul Tait / RIGHT CENTRE MIDFIELD - Lee Howells / LEFT MIDFIELD - Reece Flanagan / STRIKER - Matty Blair / STRIKER - Stefan Moore / STRIKER - David Accam BENCH: Jacob Blyth / Sam Shilton / Andy Turner / Mickey Nuttell / Tony Breedon

How Data Is Changing The Way We Train.

The two main performance-tracking systems currently used by Premier League teams in training are Catapult Sport’s OptimEye S5 and the STATSports Viper, both of which slot into compression vests worn on the upper body. As well as GPS sensors, these contain accelerometers, magnetometers and gyroscopes, to pick up extra information on impacts, jumps, changes of direction, acceleration and deceleration. Alexis Sanchez uses the STATSports Viper compression vest during Arsenal training sessions. The technology’s main function is to help coaches create plans for each player’s training sessions, especially for those recovering from injury. If players either under- or over-perform in a session it can be an early warning of injury.

“If you drove a car without a dashboard, you wouldn’t know how fast you were going, how far it had driven, and how much fuel was left in the tank,” says Boden Westover, director of marketing at Melbourne-based company Catapult. Head of Athletic Development at Manchester United, Tony Strudwick emphasises how important data is in the modern game, “The data side of things has become a really big part and the diagnostic tools that are available to our medical team and sports science team are therefore critical. We know the intensity of games is increasing and we know that the more successful we are as a team the more games we’ll play.

THE COACHING NETWORK

We therefore have to make sure our diagnostic and analytical tools and our decision-making are spot on. When we are dealing with critical decisions throughout the season all the support and help we can get during that decision-making process will determine whether or not we’re successful or not.” Devices are currently being tested which will provide more information, with the addition of sensors measuring things like perspiration, as well as adrenaline and cortisol levels.

Researchers are also investigating the use of “smart” pills, which could provide body temperature data to smartphones or tablet apps, so that workouts could be tweaked based on the effects of small changes in muscle temperature on physical capacity. There are also training systems that use sensors in shoes and footballs, such as the Adidas miCoach Smart Ball, to pick up extra information, such as power and spin placed on shots.
