CONNOR SCHOFIELD JAWS

WHAT AGE DID YOU FIRST START SUPPORTING ASTON VILLA?

Well, I’ve followed football for years, I’m more of a general fan of the game than a die hard fan of one particular club. I’m a big fan of Newcastle United first and foremost, then Aston Villa, interesting I know, especially with Newcastle being relegated a few years back at Villa Park but I’ve been following Villa for the last couple of years now as I live in Birmingham and I love going to Villa Park as often as I can. It’s been a bit tough to watch this season, but it hasn’t stopped me going back. My strong connections to Newcastle United are from my Dad and his side of the family, they are from up there, they’re also not having the greatest season, which is just my luck.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST ASTON VILLA MATCH?

My first game was about 3 or 4 seasons ago at Villa Park against Chelsea, I think they won 2-1, I think there were 2 red cards and Frank Lampard got the goal that made him Chelsea’s all time top scorer, which was a nice piece of history to witness.

GROWING UP WHO WAS YOUR ASTON VILLA IDOL?

I didn’t really follow them growing up as I moved around a lot as a youngster, when I really started to take an interest in them though they always

ISSUE 03 - MARCH 2016

ended up selling their best players such as Ashley Young, James Milner, Stuart Downing and more recently Benteke and Delph, so I never really had an idol there.

DO ANY OF YOUR BAND MEMBERS SUPPORT VILLA? IF NOT WHO DO THEY SUPPORT?

They don’t, we have a WBA supporter and as I also follow Newcastle so things can get quite interesting.

CURRENTLY ASTON VILLA ARE BOTTOM OF THE PREMIER LEAGUE, IF YOU COULD SIGN THREE PLAYERS FROM THE PREM WHO WOULD YOU SIGN?

I’m not sure any three players could turn things around at this stage however I’d go for one defender, one midfielder and one striker. A lot of people forget that Villa lost three key players in the summer, Vlaar, Delph and Benteke - the spine of their team, influential on and

ASTON VILLA

JAWS LATEST SINGLE “WHAT WE HAVEN’T GOT” GET IT ON iTUNES NOW! off the pitch. Three leaders that unfortunately aren’t there anymore, and even though Villa spent well in the summer they didn’t manage to replace that authority, you could argue that Micah Richards was that signing but he has been very poor this season.

DEFENDER - GARY CAHILL / CHELSEA

He’s seems to be slightly out of favour at Chelsea, certainly not a guaranteed starter, but very experienced and exactly what Villa need at the back.

MIDFIELDER - MICHAEL CARRICK / MAN UTD

Experienced leader again, shamefully never had a great run for the England team. I can see him being pushed aside by Man Utd because of the money they are spending and also his age, 34. He could have steered Villa out of the mess they are currently in.

THE COACHING NETWORK

STRIKER - CHARLIE AUSTIN / SOUTHAMPTON

One from the Championship but Austin would have been perfect for Villa, he scored a lot of goals last season and I can’t believe it took until January for someone to snap him up, Southampton got a great deal at only £4mil which makes you question what are Villas goals this season? Have they accepted their fate? These three players certainly wouldn’t win you the league but for Villas current situation they could probably bring a bit of stability and help them climb the table a bit!

th on m e th f Club o

RAMSBOTTOM UNITED FC

Evo-Stik Premier Division team Ramsbottom United have had rough time lately after being devastated by Boxing Day floods but The Rams have been touched by the support they have received from other football clubs and fans.

AT THE END OF 2015, THE CLUB WAS HIT BY MAJOR FLOODING. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE HOME GAMES WITH THE GROUND BEING UNAVAILABLE? On Boxing Day the pitch, generators, changing rooms, tea bar and toilets were all under 5 feet of water. It even got into the hospitality suite which is raised up over 4 feet off the ground. We had floods about 3 feet high in June 2012 but we’d never had anything this bad. We’ve had to cancel some games and have managed to reverse others so that we play the away fixture in January, leaving the home one for later in the season. What this means is that we’ve still got 11 home games to play (including 5 in 15 days at the end of Feb/beginning of March) out of our remaining 18. We haven’t had a home game for over 6 weeks now, so the club is also suffering due to a lack of income.

A FUND WAS SETUP TO HELP YOU RAISE MONEY TO GET YOUR GROUND UP AND RUNNING AGAIN. THERE WERE DONATIONS FROM THE MANCHESTER LEAGUE ALL THE WAY TO THE PREMIER LEAGUE. HOW DID THIS MONEY HELP THE CLUB GET THE GROUND BACK UP AND RUNNING? We have been really touched by the amount of support we’ve had from other clubs and fans, not just in the EvoStik League, but from all levels of

ISSUE 03 - MARCH 2016

football. Four fans of Sutton Coldfield Town (a team in our league) even made a 220 mile round trip to come and help out at the ground - brilliant! The donated money will go towards the repair costs for the generators and electrics.

YOU AIMED TO GET THE STADIUM BACK UP AND RUNNING ON THE 19TH JANUARY. DID YOU MANAGE TO GET THE GROUND READY FOR THE GAME ON THAT DATE? No, the generator wasn’t fixed in time for that match (as it was a cup match, we switched it to the opposition’s ground). We are hoping that we’ll have our first home game of 2016 this Saturday (6th Feb) but that’s in doubt as there are still problems with the electrics.

08

THE COACHING NETWORK

HOW IS YOUR SEASON GOING? Erm.... Not very well! We’ve been bottom of the table all season. We had a change of management in October and things have picked up a bit since then, but not enough to lift us from the foot of the table. We’re playing some decent football now, but somehow we’re just not quite getting the results we deserve. We keep getting told by opposition fans “you don’t look like a bottom of the table team” (and they’re right!), but unfortunately it’s goals that win games, not nice football, so we’re going to need to find our scoring boots if we’re going to avoid relegation.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR HARRY WILLIAMS RIVERSIDE STADIUM IN THE FUTURE?

To try and protect the generators from flooding again as it has cost us well over £10k to fix so far.

German goalkeeping goliath, Thorsten Stuckmann gives us the low-down on how he left Germany after playing over 280 league games and ended up at the Keepmoat Stadium via Deepdale. HOW DID YOU MAKE THE TRANSITION FROM ALEMANNIA AACHEN TO PRESTON NORTH END?

DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVOURITE GOALKEEPING DRILLS?

I came to PNE on trial in summer 2011 when my contract with Alemannia Aachen expired; I did well but they signed Ian Turner the same week. I was without a club until the end of October and Phil Brown contacted my agent to see if I was still available. I found myself on a plane to Manchester the same evening and signed a one month deal the following day. I had a few trials in England that summer because I’ve always wanted to play in this country.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER?

There have been a few - promotion with Eintract Braunschweig to the 2.Bundesliga on the last day of the season, winning the League 1 play off for PNE at Wembley and playing against Manchester United.

I like working with the ladders, especially as a tall keeper because I need to work on my agility. My goalkeeping coach at Doncaster gets the crash mats out once a week to do some top corner saves which is always fun and you don’t have to worry about landing on hard ground.

DO YOU PLAN TO COACH WHEN YOU RETIRE?

Yes, I would love to be a goalkeeping coach.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ANY GRASSROOTS GOALKEEPERS AND COACHES?

Keep working hard for your dream and listen to the coaches. It doesn’t matter if you make a mistake; you can learn more from a mistake than the things you do well anyway.

Owen Coyle Jr. (yep, he’s the son of Scottish legend Owen Coyle) has followed in his Dad’s footballing footsteps, he’s currently the England FA Amputee Coach, Oldham Ath. Academy Coach and the Inclusion Officer at Blackpool FC Community Trust, here he shares with us his involvement in the FA’s Amputee set-up. INTERVIEW BY: Izzy Keighley / @izzy_keighley

to know Getting—

OWEN COYLE JR. HOW DO YOU FEEL DIVERSITY AND OPPORTUNITIES IN FOOTBALL AND OTHER SPORTS HAVE CHANGED?

I feel there has been an enormous change over the last 5-10 years, from having little disability football in this country to now having hundreds of sports covering the different impairment groups, which is fantastic and the way it should be. There are a lot of different organisations and charities, such as ourselves, who want to give players the opportunity to play the beautiful game, regardless of the impairment.

HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INTO COACHING AMPUTEES?

I started coaching the amputee players back in February 2014, as I worked with Pete Wild of Lancashire FA who was the GB Amputee squad Head Coach at the time. He approached me to be a part of the National Amputee Programme and become Assistant Manager of the Development Squad which is the International Reserves squad. I was delighted to receive this amazing opportunity at only 17 years old, recently I’ve moved on to become the Head Coach of the Development Squad and Junior Squad which now at 19, I’m very proud of.

HOW CAN AMPUTEES GET INTO FOOTBALL?

DO YOU FACE ANY CHALLENGES COACHING AMPUTEES? I believe that working with any impairment specific group always has it’s different challenges but I feel it’s how you adapt to it as a coach. For me, they are coached no differently to mainstream players as that’s the way they want to and should be treated. I found that the only major challenge I faced was the language I used, such as saying ‘feet’ instead of ‘foot’, for instance. I also adapt my sessions to suit the players but I would do this anyway when coaching amputees or any other group.

THE COACHING NETWORK

As well as coaching, I currently administer the England Amputee FA National League. We have six teams that currently take part in this: Arsenal London Amputees, Manchester City FC Amputees, Everton FC Amputees, Portsmouth FC Amputees, Peterborough United Amputees and University of Limerick Amputees. Anybody who is keen to give the sport a try is more than welcome to attend one of the squad’s weekly training sessions or alternatively attend our amputee ‘taster sessions’ which run once a month, up and down the country. If anyone would like to discuss amputee football they are more than welcome to contact me at dev.squad@theeafa.com.

AND FINALLY, WHO’S IN YOUR DREAM TEAM?

4-3-3: De Gea, Alves, Pique, Boateng, Marcelo, Pogba, Iniesta, Modric, Suarez, Messi, Ronaldo!

EDDIE HOLDEN PERFORMANCE ANALYST

INTERVIEW BY:

Izzy Keighley / @izzy_keighley

Blackpool FC’s Eddie Holden explains what is involved in his role as a Performance Analyst for a top sports team, the importance behind the science and technology of analysis and how this enables teams and individuals to get an advantage over on an opponent. WHAT IS PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO A TEAM AND IT’S PLAYERS?

Performance analysis starts with pre-match preparation for both the players and coaches. For example, we use opposition analysis to study the ways in which upcoming teams will play, from their formation to studying their players and anticipating who will play. We can assess their strength and weaknesses and how we can use them to our advantage. Then we might set out the way we want to play our set pieces and show where we want our players. We do this as a visual so the players can use ‘imagery’ when it comes to attacking manoeuvres. On game day we will be in the dressing room with the coaches and players, but taking a back seat and simply listening. We record the game and cut pieces that the coaches ask for so they can feedback to the players or use it to work on in mid-week

ISSUE 03 - MARCH 2016

training. Typically I would clip the goals, highlights and attacking final third entries from both teams as well as sending the full game too. The first team typically use Sportscode; this is a software unavailable to the academy as it comes with a hefty price tag. All this is important to the teams preparation for a game, as winning is important for our youth players battling for professional contracts. It’s also great for the coaches to use to plan training sessions whether it be defensive transitions or choice of pass etc.

HOW CRITICAL IS THE FEEDBACK YOU GIVE YOUR PLAYERS?

The feedback I give to players isn’t the be all or end all as the coaches always have the final say. The players always love seeing their clips, especially goals, however I’m not in a position to start coaching them so I can’t tell them to use different techniques to improve accuracy, for example. Performance analysis is there at a club to be used as a resource for coaches and players, to encourage further success. So the coach might use a clip from a game three weeks ago and

12

THE COACHING NETWORK

show the players this is how he wants them to defend consistently if it was a good defensive piece.

HOW HAS NEW TECHNOLOGY HAD AN IMPACT ON COACHING?

New technology has positively impacted coaching and those aspects of training as there are always players that learn differently to others. Using technology as an aid gives players the chance of developing to the best of their abilities as much as one another. Some coaches however, are stuck firmly in their old ways, as they might be ex pro’s and may not be open to aids such as technology. Some don’t even support the use of any sports science.

CAN PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS HELP PLAYERS MEDICALLY?

Performance analysis can help players medically, but only in the right hands. I think only the coaches working with physiologists can normally advise medical help. This could be changing techniques, to reduce the amount of knee injuries to a player, as he might have a reoccurring injury. The coach could

THE COACHING NETWORK

teach them a similar but effective technique to use and the physiologist can work out scientifically, what stress the player will be able to cope with on the joint.

HOW CAN COACHES AT GRASSROOTS LEVEL USE AND BENEFIT FROM PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS?

It’s tough for coaches at grassroots to have any sports science department, not just performance analysis. The funding is simply not high enough and with analysis involving the use of cameras, it could be tough legally as some parents wont allow their children to be filmed. Whereas at professional clubs, this isn’t a problem. If the coaches at grassroots could access performance analysis, they would see some benefit, but not as much as in a professional environment. As they probably only train once a week, it would be difficult to thoroughly touch on problems picked up in the analysis.

The latest with WHAT’S YOUR CURRENT STATUS IN FOOTBALL?

I’m currently completing my coaching badges, whilst managing The Posh U18s and helping out with the U21s

Persistent knee problems have forced midfield maestro Jack Collison to retire from the beautiful game but his passion for football is still burning and he intends to focus his on own soccer schools and coaching to nurture the next raft of talent.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO FOOTBALL AND AT WHAT AGE WERE YOU?

I loved football ever since I can remember, I was literally football crazy, constantly with a ball at my feet. I played Sunday league and signed for my first pro club at the age of 9 (Peterborough Utd). I then went on to join Cambridge and eventually West Ham at 16.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE IS?

Making my debuts had always been very special. Both for Wales and in the Premier League for West Ham. I would say my biggest highlight was winning the play-off with West Ham, it was great to score 2 in the semis to set us on the way.

WHO ARE THE BRAINIEST, HARDEST TRAINER AND MOST SKILFUL PLAYERS YOU HAVE PLAYED WITH?

Brainiest would have to be Robert Green, hardest trainer would be Craig Bellamy, he was immense and most skilful would be Ravel Morrison, he is quite a talent.

OUT OF ALL THE COACHES & MANAGERS YOU HAVE PLAYED UNDER WHO HAS BEEN THE MOST SUCCESSFUL WITH YOU AND WHY?

I loved playing under Gianfranco Zola at West Ham. He was very good at managing his players, whether you were a key part of his team or one of the young lads trying to break through. He took time to improve each and everyone as an individual. It also helped he was a legend of the game and probably the best player I have seen in training even as a manager. I also enjoyed my short spell with Bournemouth, Eddie Howe was very impressive and it’s easy to see why he is doing so well.

ISSUE 03 - MARCH 2016

WHAT WOULD YOU ADVICE BE TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO GET INTO FOOTBALL?

It’s a great game to be involved in. It’s can be a roller coaster of emotions at times. Not many things can recreate the intense feelings you experience through the beautiful game.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO GO INTO MANAGEMENT WHEN YOU’VE FINISHED THE PLAYING SIDE OF THE GAME? Yea definitely, I am completing my badges at the moment and enjoying learning my trade with the younger players at posh. I am very fortunate I have played under some fantastic managers and picked up some great tips.

HOW ARE YOU FINDING THE TRANSITION FROM THE PLAYING SIDE OF FOOTBALL TO THE COACHING SIDE? Nothing beats playing, but the closest you can get to it is coaching I suppose. I really enjoy being out on the training pitch and try to pass on any little tips and advice I have picked up along the way. It’s

16

THE COACHING NETWORK

still all very new to me, so I am learning a lot at a very fast rate and always try and attach my own little spin on my sessions.

schools (www.jackcollisonsoccerschool.com) the kids hang on to every word you say, so it’s important you try and teach them the right things.

WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE FROM THE YOUR OLD TEAMMATE KEVIN NOLAN HAS GONE INTO PLAYING SIDE OF THE GAME TO THE COACHING SIDE? MANAGEMENT, IF A CLUB CAME IN FOR YOU NOW, I have found a lot of thought and effort goes into WOULD YOU GIVE IT A SHOT OR DO YOU FEEL YOU every coaching sessions; outcomes, numbers, time, STILL NEED MORE TIME TO DEVELOP AS A COACH? physical goals etc. etc. and as a player I suppose I took for granted how much preparation went into the sessions I participated in. Planning a good session is an art and it’s something I’m working very hard on.

YOU ARE CURRENTLY COACHING PETERBOROUGH UTD UNDER 21’S, HOW ARE YOU FINDING IT?

It’s been a really good experience and huge learning curve for me. Over the past few months I have also had a heavy involvement with the under 18s and I am loving that. I always find with younger players they are keen to learn and love being out on the training pitch and playing football. It’s even more evident at younger ages and I find when I coach at my soccer

THE COACHING NETWORK

I think as a coach you will always be learning, even the likes of Wenger and Mourinho will constantly be evolving. I feel I have a long way to go but I love a challenge so would never say never. I believe you find more about yourself in difficult situations and by testing your limits. I think Kevin Nolan will be a fantastic manager at Leyton Orient as he is a born leader and was great to play alongside. If he can get across his points as he did as a player I wouldn’t be surprised to see orient pushing for promotion.

THE STILIYAN PETROV FOUNDATION

Celtic and Aston Villa legend Stiliyan Petrov faced the hardest challenge of his life when diagnosed with leukaemia in 2012, but against the odds, the dynamic box-to-box midfielder and Bulgarian international has faced and beaten the disease and is now focussed into helping others with his foundation set up in 2013 with the purpose to revolutionise the way leukaemia and cancer are treated. Here Stan shares his story. Since being diagnosed with acute leukaemia in March 2012, I have come to understand and appreciate the way in which this disease impacts the lives of so many people. I can help and I want to help and, in setting up a foundation to help address the issues involved when people are diagnosed with this illness, I hope to make a difference. This will be my new challenge, one I will face with all the enthusiasm, energy and drive with which I have faced every single challenge in my life. At Celtic FC and at Aston Villa FC I was privileged to live a life competing at a high level,

playing the game I love, supported by the most passionate fans, then something crazy happened, something I thought was just a cold but turned out to be something more serious, something life-changing. I played 90 minutes for Villa against Arsenal at The Emirates and I felt fatigued, not myself at all. But I thought it was nothing serious. The diagnosis by Dr Richard Lovell was a complete shock. Fortunately, I was able to make decisions very quickly and I started my treatment quickly. I needed to. My leukaemia is now in remission and I have finished my high-intensity treatment. From now on I’ll be on the softer treatment, which is two years on tablets. I feel

I want to make a difference and I know I can because I have gone through the pain, the heartache, the feeling of the big unknown. “It was my great fortune to have great people around me and, most of all, a fantastic family. They have been powerful pillars of support when I have needed them most over the past year, my wife, Paulina, and my sons, Kristiyan and Stiliyan,

whom I love very much. Also my Mum, Dad and my Brother and Paulina’s Mum and the people who have been closest to me throughout the worst of times. Each and every day I thank God for giving me the opportunity to still be with my family and I know how vital the family is to anyone who will go through the same ordeal I did. That’s why I want to be able to help the families of victims also. Through the Foundation, we want to be able to provide a support infrastructure, a way that will help families to be near to their loved ones while they undergo the treatment. The Stiliyan Petrov Foundation will strive to provide the necessary support and help and this is my commitment. There is a deep joy in my heart because of what I was able to do in the game of football and the many great people I was able to meet. I felt privileged, I still do and I always will. I feel privileged now, too, that I can help the families and victims of leukaemia and other cancers. Together with your support, we will help many people to overcome. This is our mission.”

Deontay Wilder boasts an undefeated record of 36-0 with 35 by the way of knockout, the last of which being a devastating right hand KO of Polish boxer Artur Szpilka – after that fight Tyson Fury, who was watching ringside, entered the ring to face-off with Wilder, fuelling the fans to want to see this showdown, but with a rematch against Klitschko and the winner looking likely to fight Ortiz, a Wilder vs. Fury fight may not be seen until 2017. Alexander Povetkin has an almost perfect record of 30 wins with just 1 loss which lost him the WBA World title to the great Wladimir Klitschko. Povetkin has beaten a number of top

LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT WARD vs. KOVALEV Andre Ward, one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world right now, with an undefeated record after 28 wins with 15 stoppages. Many believe now that Mayweather has retired only Golovkin rivals Ward as the best in the world even though Ward has been fairly inactive having only fought one fight (against Paul Smith Jr) in over two years. A very good amateur career has set him up for greatness in the pro ranks and is on course to be one of the best fighters in history.

his hands on that IBF title and what a unification fight that would be! Abraham has a good record against British fighters, most recently beating Paul Smith Jr twice and the heroic Martin Murray.

THE OUTCOME? We predict Abraham to win by a

late stoppage to hold both the WBO and IBF belts.

Sergey Kovalev fresh from beating Jean Pascal, for the second time, called out Adonis Stevenson but the fight we want to see is the Krusher take on Ward as we feel that would be one of the finest fights in the light heavyweight division ever. With the power and dominance of Kovalev and the technical ability, speed and power of Ward would make the fight of the year, even better than Golovkin vs Canelo.

THE OUTCOME? We say Ward to continue he’s

legacy and set himself up as the P4P best in the world. Ward on points by unanimous decision.

CRUISERWEIGHT USYK vs. BELLEW Scouser Tony Bellew wants a world title shot now he has secured the vacant EBU Cruiserweight title by beating Mateusz Masternak, and what better way to secure a mandatory position by moving up the rankings by beating undefeated Oleksandr Usyk. Bellew has a decent record with only 2 losses in a 29 fight career, only losing to Nathan Cleverly and Adonis Stevenson. Under the tutelage of David Coldwell, Bellew could well get his chance for gold.

SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT DEGALE vs. ABRAHAM IBF Super Middleweight champion James DeGale is the centre of a lot of talks in the boxing world with the possibility of Carl Froch coming out of retirement for a fight against DeGale. Another option is George Groves to avenge the loss DeGale suffered at the hands of Groves in 2011, but some feel Groves doesn’t deserve a title shot after suffering two losses to Froch and a loss to Badou Jack also. Arthur Abraham is the current WBO Super Middleweight champion and would love to get

Ukrainian Usyk was described by Boxing Monthly magazine as the ‘Anthony Joshua of the cruiserweight division’. Usyk turned pro in late 2013 and signed a deal with the Klitschko brother’s K2 Promotions. A record of 9 wins from 9 fights all by way of stoppage. Usyk is such a big prospect it’s a very dangerous fight for Bellew, potentially avoided by the Bellew camp as it could be seen as an all risk and no reward fight.

THE OUTCOME? We believe it could be a draw but

we do not sit on the fence here, so I am going to stick my neck out and say Bellew on points due to Tony’s experience in the ring.

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE YOU WERE APPOINTED THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND KITMAN AND HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU BEEN WITH IRELAND? I was an executive member of Athletic Union League, a large football league in Dublin. I’ve been 16 years as an FAI kit man, the first 10 being with Don Givens’ Under 21s.

SINCE YOUR TIME WITH IRELAND WHAT HAS BEEN MOST MEMORABLE?

Winning the World Cup play-off second leg for South Africa 2010 against France in Paris in 90 mins to bring game to extra time, then to be cruelly robbed of our chance by the now-infamous Thierry Henry handball. Gutted for players, fans, staff, association and Country.

WHAT DOES A DAY TO DAY JOB INCLUDE FOR YOU BEFORE A MATCH DAY?

Before match day, myself and my colleague Mick Lawlor get the training kit prepared for a session, then we go through the match day kit to check names, numbers, sizes, badges, insignias, all have to be checked and cross-referenced.

WHAT’S IT LIKE HAVING ROY KEANE IN THE CHANGING ROOMS?

Roy in the changing room is electric, possibly the greatest midfielder in the world of his time he rubs off on everyone. He gives players a lift when he talks to them, not that they need a lift after Martin O’Neill speaks to them. They are buzzing once changed and ready for action.

Q&A with

Pro freeride snowboarder Angelica Sykes give us a run down of how she got started, her goals for the future and advice to those looking at getting involved in the crazy world of snowsports!

1

HOW DID YOU GET INTO SNOWBOARDING AND AT WHAT AGE WERE YOU?

I was relatively old when I for into snowboarding I guess. I was 18 and on my first winter season in a tiny little town called Pila. I had been skiing since I was a child and for some strange reason, when I felt I had plateaued in skiing - instead of heading to try my hand at the park or freeride, I decided to start from scratch again in snowboarding. It was so rough at the start, I was covered in bruises and not to mention my slightly depleted ego! However the cliché that everyone talks about; that one day it will just “click”, for me it really did and I haven’t looked back since. You just need to be determined and Corney as it sounds, dedicate yourself and you will have that golden moment when it all comes together.

WOULD YOU SAY YOUR BIGGEST 2 WHAT ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE IS AND WHY?

I would have to give 2 answers, first I would say would be when I won the Verbier Freeride Week last year. When they called my name as first, it was a sense of total euphoria which I’d never felt before. To feel achievement in a sport I so admire was simply wonderful. For other reasons my other proudest moments would be getting to work with all my sponsors. They are truly wonderful people and companies whose ethic and philosophy mirrors mine – Vaude, Gilson Snowboards, Mojo

Clothing, FATMAP and Caxton FX, a real eclectic mix but I literally couldn’t ask for better support. For the most eco-friendly clothes to the best ski app on the market these guys rock. To feel supported by them is a very good feeling indeed.

3

WHO WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR UNSUNG HERO IN YOUR CAREER?

Oh Lord. Without doubt my parents and my little sister. I will be honest, I am a little crazy. I am so hard on myself in snowboarding and in life, that sometimes its to the point where I simply couldn’t share that part of myself with anyone else. I need an outlet for my frustration when I feel I haven’t trained hard enough or when I haven’t landed a drop or just generally having a bad day, they listen and help me understand what is important and what I need to move forward as an athlete. They keep me from accidentally throwing my snowboard very hard at the people physically closest to me, which sadly would be my unsuspecting Swedish roommates.

4

IS THERE ANYTHING SPECIFIC YOU ARE CURRENTLY TRAINING TOWARDS?

This season has been a strange one so far, with so many of the competitions being canceled or proposed it feels like I haven’t done anything in ages. But now I am slowly getting back on track. I have some big freeride comps coming up including Morgins, Nendaz, The Nordic Championships and the Freeride Fest in Roldal, Norway. Between all that I hope to complete my All Girls Freeride project. I am backed by the Cervinia Tourist Office as well as the Aosta Valley Tourist Office to produce an edit that showcases all the beauty of girls snowsport as well as well the natural environment here, which is why this Valley is my home.

5

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO GET INTO SNOWBOARDING?

Being in the mountains and taking that leap to trying out snowsports for the first time is rarely one that people regret. We call it “catching the bug” as this environment has a way of finding you and not letting you go. First and foremost, ensure you are safe and happy, by having lessons with certified professional instructors. You CANNOT teach yourself. Then it’s to surround yourself with similarly minded people. People who want to improve and experience all the freedom and joy. That’s what makes it - it’s the people.

A

fter my article in the last issue of this mag I have had all questions from “What do you do?” to “Are you working in Football or Boxing?”.

When we watch athletes compete and we study them, that is a form of basic modelling. What we need to do now is go into more detail and actually APPLY it. The problem we have is our beliefs and values. We need them to be in alignment. This is just as important if not more important.

So here it is – I am a mental skills/performance coach, my work ranges from helping people quit smoking and help businesses grow to helping sales people sell to helping boxers on the road to the Olympics or to professional titles. I was originally a football coach and was the youngest ever manager in the FA Youth Cup and 7 years later I’m a mental skills coach and am now known for working in boxing from small hall shows to WBO European Champions on TV.

Capabilities can be taught. It takes 10,000 hours over 10 years of purposeful training to be at the top of your field/industry. But if we have limiting beliefs or values then we either give up or we compete at our worst or at the minimum needed.

As I made the transformation from football to boxing a lot of people said it was odd but I am not the only one!!

Mindset is very important but what is just as important is APPLYING it so we get a physical outcome. I am a performance coach and get you results. We need to APPLY our strengths and either work on our weaknesses or hire someone to help with them – importantly hire the best, it’s about investing in yourself.

On the 30th January 2016, in the Copper Box Arena, London – Leon McKenzie fought an eliminator for the English Super-Middleweight title against Kelvin Young – for the outside world of boxing this means that the winner will either get a shot at the title or will lead to a final eliminator. Leon KO’d Kelvin Young within 43 seconds of the first round and in this case it’s very likely now a fight for the English title – again for the outside world this is one below the British title so it isn’t a tiny title its a stepping stone to the British title. Now everyone knows Leon McKenzie was a Premiership star and swapped his boots for a pair of gloves. If he wins the British title it would be the equivalent of Frank Bruno scoring in an FA Cup Final – just seems impossible doesn’t it? IS IMPOSSIBLE A FACT OR A BELIEF? Even I would of doubted a sportsman or woman being successful in two sports, but we all know it has been done before in Curtis Woodhouse – he is like the Roger Bannister and the 4 minute mile of Boxing. Everyone said it was impossible and now that Curtis has done it he has opened up the possibility for others to do the same. Being an NLP Qualified Performance Coach I want to assist everyone to

THE COACHING NETWORK

achieve their goals and whether you know you’re using it or not we use a powerful tool called modelling excellence all the time.

Take me for example I’m working with some top athletes but my grammar and spelling isn’t great and by the time you are reading this article it will have been heavily edited for the correct grammar and spelling. The EXPERT here is all of us!! I am a mental skills/ performance coach that is my strength – my weakness is grammar, but the team at The Coaching Network have strengths in grammar so with this teamwork we get a great article. My point is that behind every successful person there has been many years of HARD WORK with COACHES and/or MENTORS. If you EMPLOY the best you will become the best. Even I have mentors and I met them recently as I want to get to the Rio Olympics, what I learnt from them was more than I have in my 32 years on Earth, and because I invested in my weaknesses I’m now APPLYING it to become the best mentor/coach I can be to assist others to reach their ultimate goal.

PLAYER EDUCATION Tamworth FC physio Kieran Berry explores the importance of Player Education and how his role can be challenging with the limitations of a non-league club, but with a few basic ideas can also be effective in connecting with players to optimize performance and rehabilitation.

P

layer education is a valuable aspect towards optimizing player performance. This can come in many shapes and forms, initially as a sports therapist the main area would be to enlighten the players about difference exercises that they can do to help prevent injuries, and categorizing them into their muscle groups so they understand what muscles are being used when doing the exercise. This may sound very basic but I’ve seen on multiple occasions people doing exercises incorrectly assuming that the muscle pain they’re experiencing is a good thing were as in reality they are increasing their chances of injuring themselves. Now I understand from past experiences that this can be a very difficult task to do especially when working at a non-league club. This is due to therapists having a limited amount of time with players individually with most clubs only having evening training sessions. With this said

ISSUE 03 - MARCH 2016

player education at this level becomes even more important as you can’t control what they are doing away from the club. To counter-attack this problem I always thoroughly explain the screening tests to the players, this is so they are aware of what I’m looking for and how it affects their performance. By doing this it paints a picture in their head and because it’s explained to them you then get better cooperation from them. Yet again this is something very simple but is highly effective and can be missed very easily because it can be assumed that athletes should know how to look after their bodies. But my questions are “How can they know if they have never been educated in the first place?” “Every player may know how to stretch as its part of a routine but if you told them to stretch a specific muscle would they know how to do so without your guidance?” Leading on from this topic, I found that the time limitation also caused another big hurdle. This was that although I could recommend specific exercises

28

THE COACHING NETWORK

If this is positive then the individual would then be educated on why I’m looking for this and that if this occurs when they are squatting in their own time then its a big indicator to reduce the weight so that they can correctly perform a squat and reduce the chances of injuring themselves. Another tool that I’ve found effective is the use of creating “injury information packs”. Recently my medical team and myself took on the task of producing these packs and its fair to say the quality of the work was pleasing. I’ve found previously that by doing these packs it enables the individual to understand precisely what’s going on, with the documentation adapted so that the information isn’t to complicated. An example being Anterior Pelvic Tilt the pack would explain which muscles are stereotypically tight and which muscles are over active, this also allows the individual to gain a visual understanding of their injury and helps them understand what they need to do to reverse the problem.

Every player may know how to stretch as its part of a their routine but if you told them to stretch a specific muscle would they know how to do so without your guidance?” for people to do to prevent injuries, I’m not able to show each individual player how to perform the exercise, as you don’t always have access to gym equipment/facilities. To get around this I educate the players through written instructions on how to do the exercises and again explain in relation to screening findings. For example most therapists will recommend that a player should do squats in their own time to improve pelvic stabilization and strength. With this stated I incorporate this concept by testing their squatting technique (Body weight) and analyze for a valgus knee drop.

THE COACHING NETWORK

An area where this concept can be very useful is if your working at an academy, as these information packs can be given to the Parent/Guardian so there aware of the injury and how they can aid injury management away from the club. This is something I’d highly recommend to you all if your working with children because not all parents are going to have a good anatomical understanding and they most likely will underestimate the true severity of the injury. To conclude, although the ideas documented above can be time consuming I believe they’re an effective way to connect with players/parents to optimize performance and rehabilitation programs. I initially used these ideas to get around the difficulties of what a therapist encounters whilst working at non-league level and have first hand seen the positive outcomes by doing so.
