Platinum stars proposed sale and its impact on society of Phokeng Platinum stars hosted a media open day at the club’s headquarters in Phokeng on Wednesday where they unveiled their new additions to their playing personnel ahead of the 2017/2018 season. The new players were not the only ones the club unveiled; they were also unveiling new technical sponsor lotto and the new coach Peter Butler from Britain. The new players unveiled were Dino Visser, Lehlogonolo Masalesa, Sibongakonke Mbatha, Maboke Matlakala, Brian Mwila, Enocent Mkhabela, Luvolwethu Mpeta, Sibusiso Mthethwa, Ennocent Mkhabela and Thabang Sesinye and two youngsters, Thembelani Majingo and Katlego Otladisa promoted from the Dikwena academy. In his address to the media, the club’s chairman Cliff Ramoroa hinted that Royal Bafokeng as a major shareholders in the team are planning to sell the club. “There is an issue circulating in terms of the club being sold, it is true the Bafokeng are considering disposing the team. Once we find the relevant person locally, we might have to dispose the team” said the chairman.

The club’s general manager Senzo Mazingiza cited the financial difficulties borne out of the global economic situation as the reason that has forced the club’s shareholders to take this decision. When asked about the impact this decision will have on the community of Phokeng and the surrounding areas. The GM replied that the club have decided to prioritise the health of society before the entertainment of it. “Because of the difficult financial times worldwide we need to look at our priorities as shareholders, do you prioritise water and sanitation over a football club, do you prioritise schooling, health of the community over football entertainment” said the GM. The club will have to first find suitable investors before they can sell. We first need to find right investor so as to not affect operations of the team and its employees. Dikwena and its coach Peter Butler will open their Premiership campaign against Maritzburg United at Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Sunday (15h00).
