LOCATION
Situated in the heart of Bolivia, the National Park and Indian Reservation Isiboro Sécure (TIPNIS) is home to some of the most remote and amazing rivers in the world. Tsimane’s operational base is located inside the TIPNIS, about 270 miles (470 km) from Santa Cruz de la Sierra, the country’s major city.
the Ichoa, and the Sécure, all of which are the headwaters of Amazon basin. This massive migration of fish can only be compared to the yearly runs of Pacific Salmon and some experts say it closely resembles the great migration of plains game on the African plains.
This protected area is an Indigenous Territory, home to the Chimán, Yuracaré, and Moxeño ethnic groups.
Dorado and other predatory species of fish follow these huge schools of baitfish (sabalo) that by sheer mass, literally change the color of the water. Several months later, all these species spawn in unison and from the moment of birth, their struggle begins all over - completing and starting the circle of life all at one time. Amazingly, a few hours after spawning, Dorado start attacking, catching and hungrily devouring their prey - these are the apex predator of the jungle rivers.
Tsimane operation is located on the northwestern side of this magnificent area, reachable only by air. Each year a massive migration of enter the Mamoré River and spread out to her tributaries including the TIPNIS, the Isiboro,

FISHING
Tsimane is arguably the most amazing and important freshwater fly fishing destination that has entered the world of international angling travel in a generation. Fly-fishing for huge Dorado in small, clearwater freestone rivers has to be experienced (at least once in an anglers lifetime) to truly put it into context. Dorado are voracious hunters, overaggressive but not necessarily always easy to catch. Perhaps they are one of the most complex freshwater fishes on earth while at same time the top predator of its habitat. You would think a fish as aggressive as a Dorado would hit every fly thrown within 20 feet of its nose, but that is not the case. They are selective feeders and only attack prey when they have them in a situation where they can maximize their assault and kill as many baitfish while expending the least amount of energy. Dorado are highly adaptive creatures and can thrive in tiny mountains creeks or enormous muddy water rivers. Dorado fishing at Tsimane varies greatly, from sight casting in shallow water, hitting enormous feeding frenzies, or hunting bid dorado in tiny pocket water (like trout fishing) to prospecting (swinging flies through runs and pools like salmon fishing) and finally casting to and in structure like logs and trees. Like most fishing, the element of surprise is the angler’s advantage, and noisy and sloppy approaches and presentations can easily be put down Dorado. Every play on a spotted Dorado must be carefully planned and coordinated. Working closely with your guide and listening to his advise will maximize your opportunities and catch rate. The Pirapitinga is a wonderful game fish to pursue in our waters and offers a
challenge to even the most experienced and capable fly fishers. They can be very spooky, and the “stalk” must be carefully planned and executed an accurate cast and good presentation is necessary. When done properly, the follow is made without any doubt and the result is a very exciting fight. These powerful round bodied fish with bulldog jaws deserve a lot of respect and will take anglers well into their backing with savage runs. We call them Freshwater Permit, and in Tsimane you will discover why we hold them is such high esteem. At Tsimane guests can also target other wonderful sportfish: the Yatorana, which is one of the largest Brycons, found in the Amazon basins of Bolivia, Peru, Brazil and Ecuador. Tsimane offers sensational Yatoranas averaging 4 pounds with some trophies of 8 pounds. It is an omnivorous, opportunistic fish, which lives near by banks vegetation from where it gets food and shelter. Their varied diet includes fruits, seeds, flowers, amphibians, rodents, small baitfish, and terrestrial insects (beetles, bugs, cicadas, bees, ants, etc.). There’s also the chance of occasional surubi catches on the fly, as well as the Saliminus iquitensis, a smaller Dorado specie.
INDIAN COMMUNITIES INVOLVED
Tsimane was built following the model Untamed Angling created and is the first operation in the fly-fishing world to develop a joint-venture between a private enterprise and Indian communities. This partnership involves great social and environmental responsibility. We partner with five different communities of the high Secure river – Asunta, Ushwea, Palmar de Agua Negra, Oromomo, and Areruta. Together we have formed and Indian association specifically for the 13
Tsimane project, The Secure Indian Federation, represents 22 communities of the Secure river, including the Beni state Indian Federation, the largest Indian federation in the country.
the Ministry of Environment of Bolivia. We are required to execute a comprehensive and stringent environmental management plan and submit semiannual reports to the governing agencies.
Our natives partners are active and equal participants in the daily exection of our programs. They are vital to the success if Tsimane and help with guiding, raw material and food supply, sales of handcraft, furniture and tool construction, watchers and masters, maintenance, transportation along the river, among others duties. Our native partner are a critical component of our Tsimane operations and we could not do it without them.
SEASON:
Guests at Tsimane will not only enjoy a phenomenal fishing and wilderness experience but also be immersed in native culture. You will meet people that live under conditions that have not changed in thousands of years. They are very simple, friendly and curious people, with a good sense of humor and a deep knowledge about their environment. We encourage you to engage the people of Tsimane and enjoy their wonderful personalities.
ENVIROMENTAL CARES
Tsimane develop a series of practices aimed at the protection of the forest in the pure state in which it is today. We require all fish to be released without exceptions. Every fish caught allow us to obtain data for the Biological Research Program that will be carried out to research about fish behavior, biological conditions, spawning season, migration cycle and their geographical distribution. We also work with renewable energy and promote a proper treatment of the waste.
AUTHORITIES INVOLVED
The Tsimane program is constantly monitored and audited by the National Service of Protected Areas (SERNAP), and
14
The Tsimane fishing season runs from early May to late October - our dry season when rivers are low and very clear. Season tend to be very stable in terms of quantity and size of fish. Each time period of the season has specific characteristics that vary with water level and migration timing.

TSIMANE PROGRAMS
The Secure Lodge, Agua Negra Camp, Pluma Lodge, and upper Pluma and Itirizama Headwater Camps will now be integrated into two new and independent standard programs, both with 6 full days of fishing and 7 nights: Pluma/Itirizama headwater camps and waters will be part of Pluma Lodge program, and Agua Negra Camp and waters will be part of Secure program building the new Secure & Agua Negra Lodge program. Now anglers have the chance to choose two different fishing programs with the all amenities of the famously comfortable jungle lodges at Tsimane. The new programs will offer more water in an even more exclusive and intimate experience. Two week packages combining both lodge programs will also be offered, a unique opportunity to experience everything Tsimane has to offer.
17
Secure & Agua Negra Lodges Secure Lodge & Agua Negra Lodge – 6 full days and one half day Fishing and 7 nights. The Tsimane Secure & Agua Negra Lodges experience is based on two comfortable jungle lodges in same week. The capacity is limited to 4 rods at Secure Lodge and 4 rods at Agua Negra, accommodated in Single Occupancy Cabins. The program for Secure Lodge anglers is to fish two and a half days from Secure lodge with the option of one overnight at a remote headwaters out-camp. With three different zones in the upper Secure water and one zone in the lower Secure, there’s a ton of water to access based out of the lodge and headwater camp. The program for Agua Negra is to have two and a half days fishing in Agua Negra, which features a lower, medium and upper section. In addition anglers will fish sectors of the Secure between the Agua Negra mouth and Pluma river mouth, and the tiny and prolific Chimoro jungle creek. Midway through the week, the four anglers who started at Secure Lodge and the four anglers who began at Agua Negra will switch, fishing their way to the respective new lodges and new accommodations for the second part of their week-long jungle odyssey.
Secure Lodge Waters Secure Lodge is designed to host up to four anglers in single occupancy cabins, and two types of accommodation: the lodge itself and an outcamp on the Secure River headwaters. Access to very different types of water is offered. The lodge’s well planned schedule keeps anglers fishing new and fresh waters every day, so that anglers not only experience walking through an untouched mountainous rainforest but also get to fish in a variety of waters that are home of amazing fish species and require different fishing techniques. The high sector of Secure Rivers is extremely beautiful with crystal 18
clear water, wedged among mountains and allows anglers an extremely close and exciting contact with the jungle. As the river becomes narrower and narrower it offers short runs and deep pools and fishing is carried out walking and wading upstream, going deep into the mountanious yunga and carefully observing the waters to find fish. This is hunting with a fly rod.
Agua Negra Lodge Waters The Agua Negra River is an important tributary of the Secure River and it is the newest Tsimane fishery. This river, which has its own lodge for up to four anglers, and a new headwaters outcamp, has approximately half of Secure’s water volume and it is divided into very different sectors. This river runs from east to west in an area which is not very rugged. Fishing is often performed by walking upstream and sight fishing in low waters, prospecting fish in runs and deep pools. The key for success for sight fishing on these waters is to use floating lines, long leaders and delicate presentations. Undoubtedly, the high sector of the Agua Negra River is one of Tsimane’s jewels due to its excellent number of dorado and pirapitingas. Moreover, the largest number of surubí atigrado (South American striped catfish) is found in this river. This is an ideal place for those anglers that want to trick these powerful catfish using flies. Fishing, usually sight casting, is prevalent in this region where the water is extremely transparent. Due to the fact that fish move in schools, doubles hook ups are frequent.
Accommodations Even in one of the most remote places in the world our guest will enjoy every night all the comfort and style of a world class destination. The experience is based on two very comfortable jungle lodges (Secure Lodge and Agua Negra Lodge) built with a combination of luxury single tents and sustainable taken local wood on the living

There is time in the afternoon for a half day of fishing at the nearby areas. Days 2 and 3: In Secure Lodge: Each day pairs of anglers fish one of the beats in the upper Secure River area and by the end of the day head back to Secure Lodge. Anglers experience walking through the virgin rainforest and mountainous jungle terrain, while fishing a wide variety of waters using different techniques to target a several different species of fish. Depending on the weather and river conditions, there’s also the chance to overnight at the Secure Headwater outcamp to access the very upper secure river fishing areas. In Agua Negra Lodge: Groups of two anglers will depart Agua Negra Lodge to access the different fishing beats. Everyone will fish for the entire day, enjoy a shore lunch at the river, and return to the lodge at the end of the day. The Agua Negra program is designed around 5 different fishing beats, which rotate every day, giving minimal pressure to the fishery. Some beats are accessed by boat, while others utilize a small track cut through the jungle via Suzuki 4x4 Samurai Jeeps. Depending on the weather and river conditions, there’s also the chance to overnight in the upper Agua Negra camp & headwaters. By the evening of day 3, anglers will pack their bags to prepare to transfer to the other lodge. Day 4: In Secure Lodge: After breakfast guests will start fishing downstream from the lodge, fishing and floating a full day until they reach Agua Negra Lodge sometime by late afternoon. 21

pLUMA Lodge Based out of the comforts of the main Pluma Lodge and the two headwaters out-camps, anglers have access to three different rivers, each different and unique: the Pluma River, Itirizama River, and the lower Secure River. This broad variety of waters and pools allow groups to fish fresh water every day, and rarely, if ever, repeat the same fishing beat. The water types vary from deep pools to rugged terraced pocket water. The Tsimane Pluma Lodge experience is based on one very comfortable jungle lodge, built entirely from sustainable wood cut from the nearby jungle. There are also two smaller headwater out-camp options, one on the upper Pluma River and one on the upper Itirizama River, one of the main tributaries to the Pluma.
Pluma Lodge Waters The accommodation offered at the lodge and camps allow anglers to access three rivers, which are each different in nature and character. The Pluma River, Itirizama River and the lower Secure River. Its wide variety of waters and pools allow groups not to repeat beats during their 6 day stay. They can be caught in a wide variety of waters and using different techniques. Near those places there are magnificent fishing spots for pacu, yatoranas and catfishes such as tiger surubĂes (South American striped catfish). The Pluma River is a clear, medium-size freestone river whose structure is immensely rich and beautiful. The fact that it runs from south to north and parallel to the Mosetenes Mountain Range (without going deep into the mountains) makes it wider and more open; it is easy to wade there due to its wide banks composed by round shaped gravel and rock beds. Further upriver it gets narrower, its structure similar to a classic
22

trout freestone river: it is full of shallow runs, boulders, and well defined deep pools and clear water. Fishing on the Pluma is done by walking and wading upstream, and at times using a Chiman canoe (no engine) which is very convenient especially for returning to the lodge at the end of the day. The lower Pluma extends from the confluence with the Itirizama River to its mouth in the Secure River. The structure of this sector is similar to its higher reaches but with 50-60% more water volume. The pools are wider and deeper and the runs are more powerful. The lower Pluma River beats are very accessible, and the fishing is carried out on canoes (without engines) running down stream. Anglers come back to the Lodge traveling by land on 4x4 vehicles through a jungle path. The Itirizama River is similar in nature to the headwaters of the Pluma River; however, the Itirizama – considered by many anglers as the real challenge in Tsimane – has some extremely different features including swift runs, rapids, waterfalls and boulder-strewn pocket water. Very deep pools are found among those geographical features and they are generally on exposed stone slopes. Undoubtedly, this river offers the hardest hikes to access, so it is recommended only for anglers in very good physical condition. The Lower Secure River is the sector that goes from the confluence with the Pluma River to the Oromomo community. Here the Secure River bottom has fine sediment and there are many sunken logs lining its banks. This is home to “Coruya”, one of the most active fishing beats in Tsimane due to the large number and the size of the dorados. There’s a large Delta region with numerous braided channels, sand bars and other features to concentrate baitfish, and therefore Dorado, in good numbers. At the lower Secure section of Pluma Lodge we fish from two “super dugout canoes” with comfortable casting platforms. These
boats allow anglers to fish more and better those bigger waters. Accommodations The Pluma Lodge is built with sustainable taken local wood. It has five log cabins with spring box beds, private bathroom with hot water and electric light. Every night guest will be pleased with delicious International Cuisine and great Argentinean wines. There’s satellite Internet wireless connection and phone available for guests. Generators provide full electric power every night and each cabin has 220-volt plugs so remind to bring if needed the 110V to 220V converter. You can charge batteries and use an electric shaver or hair dryer on every cabin. We are conscious about sustainable way to generate electric power, and we have solar panels for hot water, which works perfectly. We have laundry at the lodges at no additional cost. Just leave your clothes on bath dispenser, and they will return washed and clean. TRIP ITINERARY This program takes advantage of the waters of main Pluma River, upper Pluma and Itirizama Rivers, and lower sections of the Secure River. The capacity is limited to 8 rods at Pluma Lodge, with options for overnight excursions at either the Upper Pluma or Itirizama headwater outcamps. Day 0: Arrive to Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Our representative will be waiting for you in Viru Viru International Airport to transfer you from the airport to the hotel. Spend the night in 5 Star Hotel (Los Tajibos). Day 1: Breakfast at Hotel. Tsimane’s local host will pick up the group of 8 anglers around 9:30 am to head to the local airport. The group will then board the charter flight to the Oromomo Indian Community (90 minute flight). The guides will welcome the group upon landing, and transfer 25
everyone to the Pluma Lodge. This transfer is a 30-minute boat ride upstream to the Secure Coruya Dock. From there, guests will be transported on 4x4 vehicles through a gorgeous road cut through the middle of the jungle to reach Pluma Lodge. After settling into lodge, the guides will help you prepare your gear, then offer a brief orientation of your fishing week and the fishing beats rotation, along with the options for the headwater Pluma/Itirizama camp possibilities. You may even have some time to do some self-guided fishing that first evening at the home pool before dinner. Days 2 to 7: Each day anglers pair up to fish one of the beats in the Pluma area and by the end of the day head back to Pluma Lodge. There is the possibility to fish the upper Pluma and Itirizama river headwater camps, for one or two nights during the fishing week. Each headwater camp is suited for two anglers, so it is possible for two anglers to fish in the upper Pluma camps at the same time as two anglers are in the upper Itirizama camps, with 4 anglers remaining at the lodge. Groups are welcome to switch so that everyone has an opportunity to experience the headwater camps. We recommend the upper Pluma/Itirizama camps only for physically fit anglers. All of the fishing is done walking and wading upstream, and long hikes are necessary to reach the upper camp areas by the end of the day. We will have two skiffs, at the lower secure area, each one with spacious casting platforms and powerful outboard motors. They will be located at Coruya port and allow anglers to reach a new area downstream of Oromomo Community, which is completely new for Tsimane guests. This lower part of Secure river is a magnificent big dorado fishery with log structures, runs and side channels.
26
Day 8: In the morning, guests will pack up transfer back to the Oromomo Indian Community where you will meet your charter flight back to Santa Cruz (1:50hs). In Santa Cruz you will be met by a member of the Tsimane staff who will take you to the Hotel Los Tajibos to overnight. Day 9: You will be picked up at your hotel and transferred to the airport for your flight home. Inclusions: Six days guided fishing in Pluma Lodge areas / Seven nights at Pluma Lodge (with possibility for headwater camps overnights) / All inclusive meals and beverage in Tsimane Pluma Lodge / 2 nights hotel accommodations in Santa Cruz de la Sierra - Los Tajibos Hotel / Ground transfers in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, and all round trip Charters flights to and from lodge. Exclusions: Indian Territory and National Park entrance fees / International air fare / Bolivian visa / Tips and gratuities for camp staff and guides / Food and beverages in Santa Cruz de la Sierra and private city tours / Airport departure tax / Satellite phone calls / City tours in Santa Cruz de la Sierra / Extra hotel overnights / Flies (we have an extensive selection of best flies at the lodges). Native Community Fee (all Tsimane Programs): The Tipnis Natives (where Tsimane is located) have formed a board to protect their social interests moving forward. This board includes representatives from all 22 Secure River Communities, as well as all the communities in State of Beni. The leaders of the association have made the decision to implement a significant user tax on all visiting anglers. The funds from the tax will primarily be used for social projects, infrastructure development, transportation, and medical and education projects.
26
The total tax will be $550 per person to the Indians, plus $120 for a new National Park Fee for the government (totaling $670). The tax will be payable in (Cash $USD) to a representative in Santa Cruz and anglers will receive a receipt from the Association. This fee represents an important step in the continuing effort to protect our ability to continue to share this amazing and unique part of the world.

LOCATION
The lodge is located in a 40000 acres ranch in central Patagonia, Santa Cruz province, 400 Km north from El Calafate airport, one of the less populated areas in entire southern hemisphere, but it’s only a few hours from the tourist town of El Calafate. A number of flights from Buenos Aires service El Calafate every day. As soon as the group arrives, you will be welcomed by a member of our staff, and after some stretching, will be driven through the scenic Patagonian steppe 5 hours to our lodge. Most of the drive is over smooth roads for Patagonia standards. Kooi Noom lakes and rivers systems are in a so remote and exclusive area that you’ll never meet other person than your group of anglers and our staff/estancia members. A place, which looks like, works with another clock counter. The sensation is you are in Patagonia but 50 years ago.

FISHING
Kooi Noom has exclusive access to the Capitán River (which begins and finish inside the estancia), two lakes, some nice spring creeks and smaller lagoons. Due to the extensive area that have to be covered, we are equipped with two 4x4 Trucks, a Polaris Ranger 4x4 for four people, Quad bikes, and a 22 foot semi rigid boat with two 75 HP engines. These waters produce a huge amount of food for the trout (Hyallela sp., Galaxias Maculatus). As we know, trout that feeds on them can grow to incredible sizes, these fish can be compared with Strobel Lake trophy trout, with the exception that this is an open system of lakes and rivers, and the fish can swim out of the lakes freely to the rivers that we fish. Kooi Noon waters system is composed by Quiroga Chico Lake that is located on top of the plateau and is connected to the Quiroga Lake by a very steep river. The lower lake receives a main tributary and many smaller creeks, most of which hold good numbers of large rainbow trout. The largest fish encountered last season was an incredible 25 pounds! There is also a smaller lake called Toro that also boasts a very strong population of medium sized rainbows and a cristal clear creek that comes out with good fish as well.
We primary fish the Capitán River, which drain the lakes and hold large trout that come from the lakes throughout the season. So we are talking about trophy trout fishing not only in a lake or a river mouth. Much of the streams fishing takes place in intimate pocket water for rainbows that average 3-15 pounds, truly some of the biggest trout of entire Patagonia. Most of these fish have never seen a fly before, streamers, nymphs, and dry flies are all effective. We developed the fishing week based on such variety of waters to create a lifetime trout fishing experience. What else you could imagine of such a faraway place? You may think that this is a rocky and barren environment but is not. Green is the color of the area, something unusual in a region that doesn’t get more than 200 mm of precipitations per year. The lodge is located almost bellow the Andes mountains and gets a good amount of precipitations that allows rivers to run without risks of low water all though out the season and keeps life going all summer long.
ENVIROMENTAL CARES
Kooi Noom develops a series of practices aimed at the protection of nature in the pure state in which it is today. We require all fish to be released without exceptions. We work with renewable energy so the lodge has two wind generators that provide 24 hours of electricity and Wi-Fi Internet. We also take care of the proper waste treatment.

ACCOMODATIONS
Kooi Noom lodge is located on a beautiful family-run estancia only a few miles from the fishing grounds. In addition to authentic Argentine hospitality, it offers guests three double rooms with private bathrooms, a dining room, and a cozy living room where the anglers can sip whiskey and fine wines after fishing creating an intimate atmosphere for small and exclusive groups. Every meal will be prepared by our talented chef with traditional Argentine ingredients and paired with the excellent wines that Argentina is famous for.
SEASON
The fishing season runs from November to April. There are very stable mid season months from December to March. November and April can be colder but also have massive runs of trout from the lake system. January and February are the warmest months and the windiest as well. Expect around 20ºC-22ºC (68ºF-72ºF) during the day and 8ºC-10ºC (46ºF-50ºF) during nightearly morning. November and April are cooler months. Expect around 12ºC-14ºC (54ºF-57ºF) during the day and 2ºC-5ºC (33ºF- 41ºF) during night-early morning. The sun is strong during the day, but the wind chill factor makes the use of protective gear necessary all season long. We move to river pools and between pools in 4x4 vehicles and ATV’s but we also have a new tender boat to navigate the lake and reach some streams/creeks mouth, and a cataraft for the Toro Lagoon System.

Our experience developing fly fishing operations deep inside virgin jungle areas, complete with high end services and refined fishing techniques, will not only be refreshingly new to the current Amazon fly fishing scene but we are confident it will revolutionize the way sophisticated traveling anglers look at an Amazonian angling experience forever. The Rio Marié project offers the finest operation in the Amazon jungle with professional fly-fishing guides, state-of-the-art shallow draft fly fishing skiffs, experienced managers, and international chefs who create the perfect mix of local and fine international dishes. An extensive beverage selection, fine wines and top quality service round out the signature of quality anglers have come to expect from Untamed Angling, no matter how deep into the virgin rain forest wilderness areas we explore. The waters of the Rio Marié and its tributaries are scientifically proven, after several exploratory biological studies by the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) and Untamed Angling, to be the home of the largest peacock bass in the entire Amazon basin and is now the largest area in the world specifically dedicated to fly fishing only for trophy Peacock Bass. To take on the epic task of spreading the word to the world Untamed Angling has selected The Fly Shop as their partner and exclusive booking agent in US for the Rio Marié project.
LOCATION
The Rio Marié is born in the Northwest corner of the Brazilian Amazon, up near the Colombian border. It is a tributary of

the upper Rio Negro. The Rio Negro basin is the largest drainage of “black” water in the world, with approximately 710,000 km² of land are and is currently one of the most preserved regions in the Amazon, with less than 0.5 % of deforestation. The Rio Negro is its main river, the second largest tributary of the Amazon River, which has the headwaters in the Serra do Junai Hills in Colombia and runs approximately 1700 km to its confluence with the Solimoes River near the jungle city of Manaus. The majority of the indigenous population in the middle Rio Negro identify themselves as Baré which is originally from the region. There are also several groups that have moved from the upper Rio Negro, especially Tukano, Tariana and Baniwa. In the middle Rio Negro the different indigenous groups often live in the same communities or neighborhoods, and marry among themselves and with non-indigenous, creating a multi-ethnic population profile. The Rio Marie is entirely located inside a far-reaching Indigenous Territory. The fishing operation utilizes an area of more than 2 million hectares. This untouched environment has more than 800 kilometers of rivers, more than 180 known creeks, 60 lakes, and three major tributaries. Plenty of water to keep us busy chasing fish that rarely will see humans and anglers. This is the first exclusive fly-fishing only project allowed and supported by the Brazilian Government. Official Environmental Institutes worked together with the Indian Association to create the very first official sport fishing operation in Brazil inside an indigenous Indian Territory. This brings a new level of commitment and cooperation between all parties associated inside the Amazon region.

FISHING
There are more than 15 described species of Peacock Bass, (Cichla genus) in South America, and these family of fish has a very complex reproductive cicle and their feeding adaptive behavior are remarkable when compared with other Amazon fish species. The largest and most powerfull specie is the Cichla Temensis. These fish can reach up to 30 pounds, and they are found in entire Negro River Basin. There are two distinctive color phases for the Temensis species. One is the speckled color, (“Paca” in Brazil) found in all Temensis species at non-spawing periods and the other famous one is the “Assu” (or Three Bar) color; typical of spawning phase period and well known by the three vertical black stripes. These colors changing process is gradual and generate one of the most amazing fish color variety an angler can see. The Temensis peacock bass are extremely territorial and during spawning periods they can stay for weeks in same nest area protecting their hatch. Their behavior can turn very aggressive when other predators try to attack their juveline nursery areas. During each fishing week, a serious angler is bound to hook into a good number of Temensis peacock bass whose average size is astounding at over 10 lbs, not to mention a significant amount of 20+pound trophies. Every day fly anglers are casting in the Rio Marie they are in the legitimate pursuit of the next world record Peacock. The results of the scientific studies and our experience in the first season were remarkable. The average size of the Temensis peacock bass on the Rio Marie is over 10 pounds and the amount of fish recorded at over 15 pounds is shocking. And if that’s not good enough, there are more fish measuring over 20 pounds than anywhere else in the
entire Amazon Negro Basin, or the world. Studies have shown that the Rio Marié literally has double the population of big fish when compared to other, previously studied rivers such as Itapara, Agua Boa, Xeruini, and others. In 2014, we quickly organized for the first exploratory season of five weeks with 8 fly anglers per session. Those 39 anglers helped us to explore and learn and fish nearly 800 kilometers (500 miles) of the Rio Marié. What was discovered was a veritable trophy peacock bass paradise. To say that Untamed Angling and their partners The Fly Shop were hanging it all out there is an understatement…but that’s just what we did, betting it all on what we hoped was the best trophy peacock bass water ever found. We were not disappointed. The first week reports were mind-boggling: 24 fish over 10lbs / 19 fish over 13 / 6 over 18 / biggest of the week 22.5 pounds / IGFA 20 pound class tippet broken. Each succeeding fly fishing week was just like the first, with incredible numbers of monster peacocks recorded and released including several approaching world record dimensions. The tally of huge peacock bass landed during the inaugural season on the Rio Marie’ has quickly separated it from every other river on Earth. We don’t like numbers when we are speaking about fly fishing but this time we need to put the trophy caliber of the Rio Marie’ into perspective: During five weeks in 2014 our 39 guests landed and released 2133 butterfly peacock bass and 219 trophy Temensis peacock bass, 91 of which weighted 10 to 20 pounds, plus an unbelievable 24 fish between 20 to 25 pounds. Truly remarkable and off the charts. Also, if we count the 2 weeks of scouting before the first group of guests that arrived, the number of 20 pound fish landed and released jumps to 40 fish in 7 weeks!

What Untamed Angling and The Fly Shop have accomplished has been amazing and is best summed up by Don Causey, Editor of the Angling Report, fishing the first week on the Rio Marie’: “Spectacular . . . over the top . . . extraordinary. Such words, in my view, are just not appropriate in a fishing newsletter devoted to sorting out the good, bad, and ugly things that happen in the world of fishing. What I try to do is find that rifle shot of a word, or expression, that says what I mean rather than hurl a shotgun blast of vowels and consonants in the general direction of a fishery or fishing professional. All of that is a roundabout way of telling you that Untamed Angling has pulled off something quite special with its new peacock bass trip on the Marié River in Brazil. The trip is a genuine tour de force, an impressive achievement accomplished with great skill...”
INDIAN COMMUNITIES INVOLVED The Rio Marié project is the first government sanctioned operation in Brazil developed as a joint-venture between a private enterprise and an Indian Association. The project is set up as a fly fishing destination but with heavy involvement of the indigenous tribes creating a great social responsibility concept. We work as partners with the Lower Río Negro Association of Indigenous Communities (ACIBRN) who represents the 14 communities of the area, and the Río Negro Federation of Indigenous Organizations (FOIRN), who represents all the Indian communities in the entire Río Negro basin. The model of The Rio Marié project was based on the sustainable development of tourism programs, specializing in fly-fishing, created by Untamed Angling in our beginnings. As in Tsimane, our native partners receive the projects benefits directly from the tourism income as well as from the jobs it provides as fishing guides, river inspectors, transportation, maintenance, maids, chef
44
assistants and boat operators, among others. The native people also received organized job training to begin the operation during the 2014 exploratory season, a process that will be repeated yearly and shared throughout the tribes solidifying the concept of this ambitious project.
ENVIROMENTAL CARES
The Rio Marié protected area encompasses more than 400 miles of virgin waters, boasting a ridiculously healthy population of giant trophy peacock bass. The Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) has conducted numerous biological studies in the region. This research has demonstrated impressive results: The Rio Marié holds at least twice the quantity of trophy-sized peacock bass compared with any other sport fishing destination in the Rio Negro basin. For anglers, this translates into very real opportunities to consistently hook and release larger-than-average peacocks on the fly. The Rio Marié project is developing a series of practices aimed at the protection of the Amazon forest and preserving it in the pure state in which it is today. We require all fish to be released without exceptions. Every Temensis fish caught is measured, weighted and registered in the logbook to allow us to obtain valuable data for the Biological Research Program, supervised by the Brazilian Institute for the Environment (IBAMA), to study the Rio Marié system. The Rio Marie’s peacock bass research is a continuous monitoring activity to assure the best fishery management in years to come. The peacock bass monitoring, promoted by IBAMA and Untamed Angling, is completely new for the sport fishing industry in South American rivers and it is based on an adaptive fishery capacity study. We also work with renewable energy and promote a proper treatment of the waste in the entire fishing operation.

AUTHORITIES INVOLVED
The project is constantly audited by the Brazilian Institute for the Environment (IBAMA), and the Brazil National Indian Foundation (FUNAI), both Brazilian Government Institutions, as well the contribuitoin from Socio-Environmental Institute (ISA), which is one of the biggest ONG in Amazon.
the Rio Marié is literally the headwaters of the entire system, combined with its geographical location and the immensity of its drainage, it is much more constant and predictable than other regional fisheries. This natural unspoiled condition, plus the plentiful and healthy fish population, has proven to provide very good fishing even in high water conditions.

SEASON
In this region of Amazonas, the fishing season normally runs from September through January. This is the dry season for the upper Rio Negro Basin, the time when waters are at their lowest average levels which allows for fishing throughout the entire river system, including its numerous tributaries and lagoons. The Rio Negro Basin fisheries are extremely dynamic, a product of each year’s hydrological cycles. However, since 46
Flight information: There are many travel options to consider when flying to Manaus International Airport. There are daily flights from Miami, Panama, Lisboa, Lima, San Paulo and Buenos Aires to Manaus. Plan to travel to Miami by Monday or Tuesday, to connect with the flight to Manaus (MAO Airport). We suggest you arrange your flight to Miami to arrive with plenty of time to make the connecting flight to Manaus. If you are flying from the USA, there are two nonstop daily flights from Miami (AA and TAM airlines). One departs Miami early in the morning and arrives in Manaus in the early afternoon; the other flight departs Miami in the late afternoon and arrives in Manaus in the late evening. NOTE: We strongly recommend that you consider flying to Manaus a day earlier than your scheduled arrival date, to mitigate any airline delays, missed flights or lost luggage issues. Visa & Travel documents: Brazil requires U.S. citizens to carry a valid U.S. passport and a Brazilian visa when traveling to Brazil for any purpose. You must obtain your Brazilian visa in advance from the Brazilian Embassy or Consulate nearest to your place of residence in the United States. There are no “airport visas” and immigration authorities will refuse entry into Brazil to anyone not possessing a valid visa. The U.S. government cannot assist you if you arrive in Brazil without proper documentation. It takes up to a month to process a new passport,
43
so please plan accordingly. To obtain a visa, your valid passport must be sent to the nearest Brazilian Consulate General (your passport cannot expire within six months of entrance into Brazil and must contain at least 2 blank pages). Do not forget to get a passport and visa or check to make sure that your current passport and visa is valid. There are countless nightmares about Americans arriving in Brazil without one. Since 2010 all visas to Brazil are valid for 10 years multiple entry. The applicant can use the visa for 180 days in total per year. Also make certain your passport does not expire within 6 months of your trip.

Manaus: Manaus is a modern, rapidly growing city (1.4 million population). It is one of the busiest ports in the Amazon, where cargo ships distribute their goods throughout the basin. There are many interesting places to visit: The Amazonas Theater, The Palace “RĂo Negroâ€?, 47
the Floating Port, the Municipal Market Adolpho Lisboa, the Forest of Science, the Museum of Natural Science, as well as the Aboriginal Fair, where you can buy items made by the Indians. We strongly recommend you consider visiting the Fish Market, no one that visits is disappointed! Insects: This part of the Amazon jungle is surprisingly friendly due to the high tannic acid concentration in its waters. Some mosquitoes may be present, but very few in our experience. As for the rest, we remind you that this is a virgin rain forest where all kind of spiders and strange insects live. We recommend guests not to go deep into the Jungle, pass through dense vegetation or turn logs over, fallen leaves, etc. We strongly recommend wearing long sleeve shirts and pants and Buff face masks during your fishing week. Bee Allergies: The Brazilian jungle has many species of bees that at certain times may be in high concentrations. For the most part they are not aggressive and only interested in the salt on humans, but anglers with severe allergies to bees will want to be prepared for this situation. Some Recommendations: Commercial insect repellents, such as DEET, are not typically useful. Strong smelling herbs, such as peppermint and garlic are claimed to keep bees away. We probably suggest the peppermint. Also, consider wearing lightcolored clothing. Dark colored clothing always seems to attract more bees. Also avoid wearing fruity smelling shampoos, perfumes or even coconut smelling sun screen. Scent free sun block is the way to go.
GUIDING SERVICE

The native guides are intimately knowledgeable with every single pool in the river and are amazing at spotting even the most minute motion or shadow or ripple from any peacock within casting distance. In combination the guide staff is sure to provide an amazing and unbelievable experience. The Rio Marie skiffs are real fishing machines, designed by Untamed Angling to be the finest fly-fishing boats in the jungle. Our guests fish from the extremely comfortable and smooth flat skiffs, custom designed and crafted for the Rio MariĂŠ. Each skiff is equipped with 2 large casting platforms, a push poling platform and an electric trolling motor with remote control, for silent moving inside the lagoons and along the river. 90HP four stroke Yamaha engines provide the power to move long distances quickly. GPS and VHF radios are on board to keep guides in communication and aware of each others position. IGFA certificated Chatillion scales are on board to keep everyone honest while certifying the next world record. Rubber mesh landing nets are also provided to guarantee the fishes safety and to immobilize trophies close to the skiff.

MARIÉ 20 POUNDER CLUB Rio Marié is the best destination for avid fly anglers to pursue their dream of catching true trophy peacock bass: monster fish over 20 pounds. Marié is proven to hold the most remarkable average size of all peacock bass fisheries currently known to the angling world. The features that set this river system apart from all others are its remoteness, the natural characteristics of the river, its intact and perfectly functioning ecosystem, and the level of protection inside a designated Indian Territory that is almost totally un-impacted by modern man.
47
Although there are more trophy peacock bass in the Rio Marié than anywhere else in the world, it remains a challenging feat – and a worthy accomplishment – to actually land one of the monster fish weighing in at over 20 pounds. Many more of these giants are hooked every week than landed, as they are powerful brutes who know how to break leaders, straighten hooks, and destroy tackle. To honor those intrepid anglers who conquer a true trophy during their time at Rio Marié , we have created a special standing for them to be recognized: the 20 Pounder Club. Those anglers who manage to land a peacock bass over 20 pounds will receive honorary membership in the 20 Pounder Club, including a special series of hats, shirts, and notification on a new webpage displaying photos and brief big fish stories.
