the emigrant factory A Ka f ka e s que I te ration of C ross-border Flow Year : 2020 Type: Studio project, Fiction, Site Based 4
THE EMIGRANT FACTORY is a narrative project situates under a city where mass emigration has caused a problem: an extensive shortage of labour. A new border policy is proposed: All foreign visas can only be processed at the border. The project studies the existing steps and procedures for emigrants and immigrants. The flow of humans, information and materials during the process. The process is then translated into various chapters of moments in the HK International Airport. These moments invade and transform the airport into an Emigrant Factory, that receives and process outbound visa applications instantly as well as processing arriving immigrants on another level. The design aims to translate the complexity of visa application physically into the existing border facility. The border is no longer an imaginary line or an array of counters but reimagined into a complex system.

The long, slender silvery structure extending in the middle of Nevada desert valleys represents our exploration in breaking the limitation of time and space, “which all happens under one roof.” Not only should the Hyperloop campus foster the future of transportation, but also reconnects the journey of our ancestors, who passed on the will and knowledge through generations and brought the mankind from wheels to loop. Transparency, or openness, is the key for research and innovation while an unruffled environment is necessary for off-work staff and researchers. Therefore, the spaces are packed in a linear containment and arranged in an order of openness, from public to private programs. This ends up in an ultra-long structure that extends more than 400 meters along the highway. Even though the living area is separated from the main interior, all the programs share a single roof structure. The office, lab, and training center are closely connected. KEVIN TSOI PORTFOLIO 2021

Theatre Revitalization Project, Xian 34
Year : 2019- (on-going) Type: Community Project, Voluntary Work In cooperation with Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology
A new theatre that serves as the centre of villagers' daily life is designed to replace the broken theatre in Qing Fung Village, Xian. Bricks and wood are used to respond to the local textiles of the original building. Along with the overall design, I was in charge of delivering the detailed design and drawings. Wu Zhi Qiao (Bridge to China) is a charitable organisation with rich experience in community service projects on the mainland. The organisation focuses on helping underprivileged villages, by student-initiated projects on village renewal, social design, bridge and villagers’ centre. The project begins in 2019, to design and build a theatre for a local village in Xian. The project is a collaboration between HK PolyU and the Xian University of Building and Technology.

This project is a research project investigating movement and circulation in architecture. The human movements in shopping mall K11 MUSEA is photographed, recorded, and analyzed. The result is transformed into a 3D-printed 1: 200 model of the G/F of K11 MUSEA. As an interpretation of the Junkspace theory suggested by Rem Koolhaas in 2001, the model demonstrates the duration of people staying in relation to thresholds and space.
