The RUNDOWN - May 2017

President’s Corner Hello Striders:

Boston: An American Running Story premiered in Boston on Monday April 17, Boston Marathon day. It was also a one day event in selected theaters around the country on April 19. Fortunately, for fans in our area, the movie was shown at Lynnhaven 18 theaters. The documentary, narrated by Matt Damon and with music by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, chronicles the history of the iconic marathon. With interviews of many of the race's legends and actual footage of many of the races, the documentary leads up to the 2014 Boston Marathon, one year after the horrific events of April 15, 2013. I am hopeful that the movie will be able to be seen in the not too distant future by many more fans through some commercial outlet because it is an incredible documentary. The Striders hosted a get together at a local restaurant prior to the movie, and then those in attendance journeyed to the theater to enjoy the event with several other Striders. We hope to do more of these events in the future as opportunities become available. The next big race on our calendar is the Elizabeth River Run 10K on May 27 in downtown Portsmouth. Not only is this race a Strider Grand Prix race and a Hampton Roads Super Grand Prix race, but it is also being presented as part of our new partnership with J&A Racing. We've got quite a few surprises in store for you, but you'll have to come out on May 27 to find out what they are. We hope you'll enter as a participant, but if aren't able to race, we can sure use your help as a volunteer. If you're interested in volunteering, please get in touch with me or co-race directors Dan Edwards and Randy Cook. ERR is always a great event and a great way to start the Memorial Day weekend. Following closely on the heels of ERR, the next weekend on Sunday June 4, is the Breezy Point Triathlon held on Naval Station Norfolk. This year's race, now in its 25th year, coincides with the 100th anniversary of the naval base. What two better reasons can you think of to make Breezy Point a part of your early June weekend. Please sign up for this fantastic sprint triathlon, a good event for first-timers, or if you aren't able to participate, volunteers are always needed and all you need to do is go the volunteer page at the Breezy Point website; it takes over 250 volunteers over the course of several days to stage the event, so please help out if you can There are many other races listed on our race schedule, so if you haven't checked it out lately, please take a look. I hope you have a great Spring season in whatever athletic endeavor you choose. Please remember our men and women who are serving in the Armed Forces to keep our great nation safe.

~ Steve Shapiro

Editor Notes

May is here and there are plenty of races, but remember to support our major club event, Elizabeth River Run. As I am finishing up this issue, my Facebook feed is full of Striders' adventures at the 24 Hour Run for Cancer in Hampton and Ragnar. Send pictures and stories as there are plenty especially with the first weekend of hot temperatures. I hope everyone recovers quickly. Don't forget to let Steve Scudder know about your on the road adventures. See ya at the races, Ada Lester, ada@TriDuo.com Future Rundown deadlines are: June Rundown - May 24 July Rundown - June 14 August Rundown - July 20

The Tidewater Striders will compete against our friends in the Peninsula Track Club (PTC) and Colonial Road Runners (CRR) during the 28 May Elizabeth River Run 10K. We need to field a team of 25 Striders for this event. All those registered for the race (as individuals, to include Golden Runners) are encouraged to throw their hat in the ring. We will finalize the team the week prior to the race based on your predicted age-graded 10K performance. The top ten Strider finishers will count for age-graded scoring purposes and, save Golden Runners, will be reimbursed for their efforts. All team members must be Striders in good standing on race day. This is a Strider and Super Grand Prix event and all team members are eligible for individual awards. Please contact Gene Edwards (gene.edwards3@gmail.com) if you are interested in participating. For more information on age-graded scoring and to see where you stack up via the World Masters Athletics (WMA) tables, go to: http://www.runnersworld.com/tools/age-gradedcalculator

AWord from the Vice President... " The successful person has the habit of doing things failures don’t like to do. They don’t like doing them either necessarily, but their disliking is subordinated by their sense of purpose” …E. M. Gray

The Hampton Roads Super Grand Prix was held during 2016 and got rave reviews from the participants. When planning the 2017 schedule the series directors duplicated the 2016 schedule. However, once the year was complete it became apparent that more races on the Southside would lead to more participation by Southside residents. 9 Peninsula races and just 3 Southside races seemed out of whack! Based on the level of participation on the Peninsula we expect we should have three times as many Striders participating so to make the series more appealing we have added more events Southside. The expanded race schedule has some great new races; please sign up today. You only need to complete 5 races to qualify for awards and there are many upcoming events to choose from. And the best part: participation in the Grand Prix is free for club members! For more information about the Super Grand Prix, and to sign up,, go to www.hrsupergp.com ~Tom Randolph

The RUNDOWN - May 2017 Tidewater Striders’ Board of Directors Meeting

Minutes – Monday, April 3, 2017 The meeting was called to order by President Steve Shapiro at 6:30 pm at the Neptune Office in Virginia Beach. The following Board members were in attendance: Steve Shapiro, Dan Edwards, Randy Cook, Jennifer Cowell, Marie Price, Gene Edwards, Tom Randolph, Jim Dare, Tim Robinson, and Deb Redmond. Drew Midland and Stephanie Manny were absent. Also in attendance was Rich Hildreth, Past President, and Chair of the Va. Beach Bikeways Committee.

Marketplace: Dave Harrah reported that Strider volunteers manned the booth at the Shamrock Expo and were exceptional in representing the club. A big “thanks” to Board members Gene Edwards, Deb Redmond, and Jennifer Cowell for the assistance. Lynn Edwards also assisted. There was over $300.00 in merchandise sales and eight new or renewal memberships in the 15 hours of work. Membership: TS Membership ended March 2017 with 1441 members. That number was slightly ahead of the end-of-February with 1433. We had 57-members that did not renew by the 1st of April, so we begin the month of April with 1384 members.

Steve noted that without objection, he would like to move the item of New Business to the front of the agenda. New Business: Wayne Wilcox, Senior Planner for Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation Department gave a presentation on the bikeways and trails in the city. He started with a summary of the laws pertaining to biking, walking, and riding in Virginia Beach and in Virginia. Several items were discussed including:

Race: Dan Edwards informed the Board that the “Spring to Life” race has been canceled. He mentioned that the same people seem to work the finish line mainly Rick and Sharon Brown and Don Greene. More help is needed for the races to be successful. Scholarship: Jim Dare reported that two students have applied for scholarships so far but more are expected.

1) Walking and biking in Virginia Beach 2) The lack of sidewalks in the city

4) Possibly getting rid of the feeder roads on Laskin Road

Teams: Gene Edwards said that he has a men’s team in place for the Corporate 5K but the women’s team still needs two more runners. The team for the Elizabeth River Run has five runners so far but at least ten are needed.

5) Continuing the paths on Princess Anne Road

Triathlon: The Breezy Point Triathlon has 117 entries so far.

3) The difficulty in getting good service when applying for running race permits

6) Coordinating bicycle lanes with Norfolk

Youth: Coordinator Elliott Nuss reported that there are 26 Strider coaches at the various sites and a total of 122 kids participating. The Power Group has 4-9 on the average. Jennifer Cowell said that she has seen a big drop in participation from a few years ago in youth runners. A detailed inventory of gear and equipment was completed of the storage facility.

7) How Virginia Beach is lagging in bike lanes 8) The need to enforce speeding especially around schools 9) The need to educate bikers on the importance of wearing helmets, light clothing, and reflectors. 10) Runners & walkers are reminded to always run on the left side of roadways facing traffic for safety and compliance with laws.

Old Business: 1) Drew Midland is working on setting up a viewing party, either before or after the viewing of the film Boston on April 19th at Lynnhaven Cinema.

President’s Report: The remaining Board meetings for 2017 will convene at the Joint Use Library in Virginia Beach. On March 27th Steve, Rich, and Tom met with the Peninsula Track Club and the Colonial Road Runners for our quarterly meeting. They discussed the need to have a music license that was discussed at the Striders March Board meeting and also the proposed revisions to the Super GP race schedule.

2) The Marine Corps Marathon will save a bib for the cost of $166.00 for a deserving Strider runner in the name of Mel Williams. Several ideas were discussed on ways to select the winner including a silent auction and for the winner to be announced at the annual banquet. More to come later. A motion was made and seconded to approve the expenditure of $166.00 for the bib; motion carried.

Vice-President’s Report: Tom discussed the revised schedule for the Super Grand Prix. We learned that only 5% of Strider members participated in the Grand Prix in 2016 but 15% of the members of the Colonial Road Runners and Peninsula Track Club did. Tom said now that there are more races on the Southside and shorter races in the Grand Prix that he hopes more Striders would participate.

Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 7:50 pm. Respectfully submitted, Randy Cook, Secretary.

New Energy Free Mile Race

Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Dan Edwards presented his detailed report and it was accepted.

New Energy members come see how much faster this season's training has made you. This event is open to all New Energy members and any prospective members. Meet at the Chesapeake City Park pavilion in front of the skate park and the race will start at 2pm on Sunday, May 7th. The course has been posted on the New Energy Facebook page.

Committee Reports: Audit: Tim will be able to start on the tax return very soon. Constitution & Bylaws: The updated Policies and Procedures have been added to the website. Grand Prix: Marie and Tim are still working with J&A to iron out the kinks with the Grand Prix scoring format. 18

Females, Food, & Fertility “Yea, I stopped getting my period!!! That means I’m training really hard and am finally thin enough. “

“Yea, I’m glad I don’t have to deal with that monthly hassle any more.” “Yea, now I don’t have to worry about getting pregnant!” Freedom from monthly menstrual periods has historically brought pride and pleasure to many female runners. That is, until they experience infertility when they do want to get pregnant. To their misfortune, many of the same women who were very content having abnormally functioning bodies are now in a state of grief. For some, this is the first time their bodies are not doing what they want them to do: get pregnant! As Gigi Fernandez, Grand Slam tennis player stated, “As an athlete, you have this attitude, ‘I can do anything with my body.’ That’s how you think. So your biological clock is ticking, but you’re in denial.” She had seven failed fertility treatments. Infertility in athletic women is a secret source of grief that hides in many couples’ closets. Infertility affects 1 in 6 women. An estimated 12% of those with infertility are athletes (1). If you are in the childbearing season of your life, are coaching a women’s running team, or have a Millennial daughter, you likely know one or more athletic women who are struggling to conceive. A Norwegian study with about 4,000 women identified two groups who had trouble conceiving: #1. Women who trained every day, 11% of whom had fertility problems. This is three times more women than those who did not train at all. #2. Women who trained until they were completely exhausted, 24% of whom had fertility problems. This is a 2.3 times more women than those who did low intensity exercise. The women who did both—trained every day and trained to exhaustion—had the highest rates of infertility (2) Many women fit into that category: marathoners, gym rats, triathletes, elite soccer players, and fitness enthusiasts. Some of those active women may be simultaneously building their careers and choosing to delay starting a family. They

may be unaware that fertility peaks at age 25, with diminishing returns year by year. By the time a woman is 40, her chances of getting pregnant without fertility treatments are far lower. What girls and women need to know Amenorrhea (loss of menses) is a cause of concern, not a reason to celebrate Unfortunately, parents or running coaches are not teaching this fact to today’s high school girls. Or, the girls may not be really listening to the educational attempts. They are likely more interested in learning how to not get pregnant! The more relevant issue for this age group is that amenorrhea contributes to stress fractures. Yet, a 2014 survey indicates only 17% of 240 female high school athletes knew that amenorrhea makes bones weak. Only 25% knew that girls who skip their periods are prone to getting stress fractures. And 72% didn’t even know that amenorrhea is abnormal (3). Despite popular belief, amenorrhea does not happen because a woman is training hard or has low body fat. After all, many female runners are very lean, train very hard and do have regular periods. Runners with amenorrhea fail to eat enough to support both exercise and menses. Add stress and perhaps other contributing factors, and Nature halts the possibility of a woman getting pregnant. You might think these under-fueled female runners would be very skinny and losing weight. Not always the case. When a woman is leaner than her genetic blueprint (as are many athletic women), her body has an amazing ability to conserve energy. Symptoms include cold hands and feet, slow heart rate, lethargy, and amenorrhea. No surprise an estimated 65% to 69% of competitive long distance runners and dancers have amenorrhea compared to 2% to 5% of the general population (4). And even if an athletic woman does have regular menses, she may not ovulate or have normal levels of reproductive hormones. This happens unknowingly in more than 75% of highly trained and recreational athletes. CAUTION: Some runners have become pregnant on the belief amenorrhea is a convenient form of birth control. False. Women ovulate two weeks before they menstruate. If they just happen to be

Athlete's Kitchen

22

ovulating (fertile) prior to resuming menses, they can end up pregnant. No Period. Now What? Female runners who have stopped getting a monthly menstrual period or are having trouble conceiving may need help reversing the situation. The simple advice to “just eat a little more and exercise a little less” to correct the energy imbalance is much easier said than done. Amenorrhea is commonly wrapped up in disordered eating patterns. An estimated 20% to 60% of female athletes have a complicated relationship with food. They fear that eating more will lead to “getting fat,” hurting athletic performance, and losing their identity of being petite. Not the case. Eating adequate fuel gets the body out of hibernation (warmer hands, more energetic, happier, better mood), restores wasted muscles and allows well-fueled muscles to perform better How much more does a woman have to eat? At least 13.5 calories per pound of lean body weight that she does not burn off with purposeful exercise. For a woman who weighs 120 pounds and has 18% body fat, that’s 102 lbs. lean weight x 13.5 cal/lb — about 1,400 calories. Now add in another 500 or so calories for a hard workout, and you can understand why a 1,200-calorie diet can hinder fertility. A sports dietitian can help correct this imbalance, as well as help female athletes find peace with food. If you have a hard time “eating normally,” please use the referral network at www. SCANdpg.org to find your local sports RD. You might also want to read No Period. Now What? (www.NoPeriodNowWhat. com) by N. Rinaldi & S. Buckler. This invaluable resource includes the personal fertility experiences of the authors as well as more than 400 athletic women who have had trouble conceiving. The book includes tips that help active women overcome their food fears, consume more fuel, boost fertility, become pregnant—and enjoy a healthier lifestyle afterwards. Yes! Virginia Beach Runway 5K

April 1, 2017 - Virginia Beach, VA 5K Finishers: 104 Tail Dragger Finishers: 13 Half Mile: Many little ones Race Summary & Highlights: A beautiful day to do a cross country run across an airfield. This unique event runs thru an airfield, a dinosaur habitat, and is flat! To encourage the dog lovers among us, the Tail Dragger 1 Mile run was added; however, more runners were being dragged than tails. No suprise but David Jeffers and his pup were the first finishers in 6:13. Strider Mark Noble was the top finisher in the 5K with a 22:15. Proving once again that athletic talent is in the genes, Wyeth McDaniels was second in 22:26. However, 18 year old Wyeth was followed closely by 58 year old Strider Ron Weaver in 22:31.

Volunteers Rick Brown Sharon Brown Dan Edwards Don Greene

Striders that won their age group include Bill Price, Brian Hulburt, top walker Tom Gerhardt, Terri Weaver, June McDaniels, & Elaine Jeffers defended her walking title among women. While the average age of the Striders is high, it is impressive that the top four runners in the 60 plus men age group were Striders. This race is worth the drive to the outskirts of Virginia Beach. Many Kudos to race director, Jennifer Jeffers, the entire Jeffers family, and their volunteers for their efforts. Free Digital Images are available at TriDuo.com. Complete results are available at TidewaterStriders.com.

These awards won't end up in the recycle or trash bin!

Marie, please don't feed the dinosaur; he already has enough bad habits. A special thanks to Tommy Neeson for adding some extra fun to the run.

Longtime Striders, such as Chad Simpson, came out to support this fundraiser for Untamed Spirit, a local charity. Chad was second in his age group.

Strider Helena Hunt had one of the best reactions of the day! 24

Elgin Raymond was third female in the 1K in 4:41. New this year was the 5K Pump and Run, Diane Haupt was first overall with a 6:44; the Pump portion allowed each participant to take 30 seconds of their 5K time for each lift they did. The weight for lifting was based on age, gender, and weight. Diane completed 30 lifts. By the way, she did her lift on Saturday morning before the race, then stayed in the gym volunteering by assisting other runners with their lifts and then she ran a 21:44 5K. Complete results, pictures, and video are available at https:// results.chronotrack.com/event/results/event/event-27827

Striders on the Road by Steve Scudder

If you’ve been racing on the road, please let Steve know for running events. E-mail your name, race name, location, date and your results to svscudder@juno.com for running events If the full results are available online, please provide that link so that other Striders might be identified. This is a great opportunity to let Striders know about other events out of the area. When sending in your results, please consider including a little write-up about your experience. If you’re a new or recently renewed Strider and we omitted you in the “Striders on the Road,” it’s probably due to the membership data Steve had available this month.

After a couple of runs on the Jordan Bridge and a few miles of tire dragging I felt ready but found out soon that the downhills on this race are too steep to make up for time lost on 4,000 ft of uphills ... some of which feel like tire dragging. My calves started burning at mile 18, and on the last few miles every minor incline seemed like another major hill. Weather was mild and a little humid, and there was only one major rain shower while crossing Mill Mountain. The route is very scenic and the race support is excellent. Unfortunately, this year some runners were not able to finish the race as it got canceled due to severe weather. I can attest that this is a tough but worthwhile race for those who like smaller races, the quaint feel of a small town, and the stunning scenery. ~Peter Pommerenk

PLAN TO JOIN the Tidewater Striders' New Energy Youth 2017 Running Team New Energy is an informal youth group training together to improve their times in road races as well as their performance in track and field and cross-country events sanctioned by the USA Track and Field (USATF) and AAU . Motivations vary from those who simply enjoy running, to those who are goal oriented and recognize the need to train in order to perform well in races . With its group approach to running practices, New Energy provides a fun, sociable forum for running preparation and development . New Energy welcomes all youth runners, ages 6-16, regardless of ability . Practices are informal, and participants are encouraged to attend as many as possible . Runners must have a good pair of running shoes to avoid injuries . Uniforms, Warm ups and other gear can be purchased, but are optional . Membership in the Tidewater Striders is required by the third practice in order to participate in sessions and compete on a team basis in Track and Relay teams . The cost is $12 .00 per year or $18 .00 for two years . The Team participates in road races held in the Tidewater area, which are part of the Youth Grand Prix 1-mile series and are sponsored by local organizations such as school PTAs . Check race flyers for specific information by visiting www .tidewaterstriders .com . A New Energy Team race schedule will be part of the program and can be found under ‘Youth Programs’ on our Web Site. Coaching is provided by volunteers who are Tidewater Striders members . Again this year, Angelo Celesia will provide leadership for training . Other running enthusiasts/parents will also assist . New Energy provides youth runners and their families an enriching environment which can be a building block to the youth runners' future . In the past, New Energy runners attended National Cross Country and Track and Field Championships around the Country . Many previous New Energy runners are currently participating with high school and college teams where they have excelled in Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field with All State and National recognition .
