Paris
when the sun sets and the city comes alive
A cliché, but true: there is always something happening in Paris. All round the clock! Of course, clubs and concerts have a full programme of evening entertainment all through the year, but there are also other events that offer the public an introduction to Paris’s wonderful night scene. Le Magnifique is inspired by the glory days of smooth French actors Belmondo and Alain Delon, this 70s-influenced cocktail bar just behind the Comedie Francaise is a hotspot for people-watching and, true to its name, quite magnificent. Low lighting, wood-paneled walls, airy ceilings and plush leather and velvet sofas make for an unbearably trendy atmosphere in which to sip cocktails and fine wines, or share a Jeroboam of Krug with friends. Private dinners or customized private cocktail parties are also an option, for between 15 and 100 people. L’Arc is only a stone’s throw away from the grand and imposing Arc de Triomphe, L’Arc is a multilevel nightlife experience comprising restaurant, bar and club in one majestic Napoleon III-era building. The bar, decorated with chic walnut paneling, animal skins, modern artwork and space-age bubbleesque furniture, offers a huge selection of premium spirits, cocktails and champagnes in a cozy yet sharp atmosphere. contrast, is ultra-urban, with neon lighting, black leather seating and mirrors to reflect revelers as they party. The adjoining veranda offers a unique sheltered smoking space, and is one of the few of its kind in Paris. Pershing Hall Bar and Lounge is nestled in the heart of the trendy Pershing Hall Hotel, this bar and lounge is a stylish, warm and relaxed place in which to pass the time. Pink and amber lighting, low-lying seating areas and high ceilings create a simultaneously intimate and airy atmosphere, while the bar serves champagne, wines and a delicious menu of cocktails. Come here during the week for a chilled-out vibe, or during the weekend to see Paris’ beautiful people in action. Alternatively, contact the events team to organize something special. Bar Panoramaique with its spectacular views over Paris on the 33rd floor of the Hotel Concorde La Fayette, this one-of-a-kind bar is the ideal location for a celebratory or special occasion. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer unparalleled vistas, all of which are seen from cosy leather banquettes arranged facing the windows in a theater style for maximum appreciation. Written by Greg Hart

Italian Cuisine
Food that will have you drooling. Italian cuisine features a diverse range of foods which are fresh and colourful foods which are combined in simple ways to preserve the identity of the ingredients. This food is then traditionally enjoyed in a communal setting with family and friends, a little wine, and lots of laughter. There are many regional variations of cooking throughout Italy, but in general grain foods such as pasta, bread, rice, and polenta are mixed in a variety of interesting ways with vegetables, beans, fish, poultry, nuts, cheeses and meat.
Since ancient times, grains such as wheat have been a staple food throughout Italy. Indeed, wheat is one of the most revered foods in Italian cookery. It’s used to make a variety of interesting breads including ciabatta, focaccia and crusty whole grain bread. Pasta, which is made from wheat and comes in dozens of different shapes, has also been a highly-prized food for centuries. There’s an old saying that good cooking begins in the market, and never is this more true than with authentic Italian cuisine which relies heavily on fresh produce. The most commonly used vegetables include tomatoes, garlic, onions, bell peppers (capsicum), eggplants (aubergine), cabbage, zucchini (courgettes), artichokes, fennel, mushrooms, celery, asparagus, broccoli, spinach, cauliflower and lettuce. Southern Italy shares a similar Mediterranean climate to Greece, Provence and Spain. This warm, sunny climate makes it ideal for olive growing.

Whole olives are used in cooking, but the most revered part of the olive is the nectar it produces. The first cold pressing of the best olives produces extra virgin olive oil. This golden-green, richly flavored oil is used in hot dishes, marinades, salad dressings or drizzled on fresh crusty bread. Traditionally, elaborate desserts have been reserved for special occasions. Fresh and dried fruit, or a little cheese, are the typical dessert. Written by Fred Holmes

Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in
England
From golden stretches of sand to wild, unkempt heath, the English countryside is awash with beautiful landscapes – but only 35 have earned that special status that preserves them for future generations.Dotted around all four corners of England’s green and oh-so-pleasant land, the Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty each have their own character, scenery and outdoor attractions. Perched on the south coast of England, the New Forest National Park is Britain’s smallest National Park. It may be small, but its 218 square miles packed full of ancient woodland, heather-clad heaths, bluebell trails and picturesque villages are enchanting. The park’s rich history means you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to attractions, and historic houses, museums and gardens are the order of the day here. The New Forest National Park is a haven for activity lovers too. Explore the forest on foot, bike or horseback, or take to the water for a spot of canoeing, kayaking or sailing. The Peak District National Park lies between the cities of Sheffield and Manchester at the very heart of England. Sprawling across six counties, it was Britain’s first National Park, and is home to wild and wonderful landscapes, impressive peaks and picture postcard English villages.

Within the park you’ll find drastically different landscapes. The north of the park is dominated by an area called Dark Peak. High and wild, it’s home to the untamed moorland summit Kinder Scout, the highest point in the park. Towards the centre of the park you’ll find the White Peak, a lower lying region of rolling farmlands, deep dales and ancient woodland, named after the limestone dales formed in the Ice Age.
Dales are deep valleys cut by rivers, and there are over 20 to explore in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, each with its own distinctive character and atmosphere.
Dartmoor National Park in the South West of England is the most southerly of Britain’s National Parks. It’s home to 368 square miles of ruggedly beautiful moorland, ancient ruins, wooded valleys and magnificent wildlife.
You’ll find some of Britain’s most spectacular scenery in Snowdonia National Park, including Snowdon, the highest mountain in England at Wales at 1,085m, and Llyn Tegid, the largest natural lake in Wales. Add to this 823 square miles of natural adventure playground to explore and you have an outdoor experience that’s hard to beat.
Like history? Walk around the moors for a while and it won’t be long before you come across stone circles, menhirs, stone crosses and ancient villages. There are also Neolithic remains, the UK’s largest collection of Bronze Age structures and hundreds of distinctive stone tors scattered across the landscape. Located around the Pennines in the North of England, the Yorkshire Dales National Park is home to some of the most outstanding scenery in Britain. With 680 square miles of rolling hills and dales, rich heritage and magnificent wildlife, the Yorkshire Dales are the perfect place.
Snowdonia National Park, in North West Wales, is the largest National Park in Wales, home to 100 lakes, 37 miles of pristine coastline and beaches, moors and wetlands, and 90 mountain peaks.
The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park in South West Wales is Britain’s only coastal National Park, home to 240 square miles of rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, secluded rocky coves, wooded estuaries and wild inland hills. The wild open ocean, sheltered estuary waters and secluded bays are perfect for swimmers and water sports enthusiasts. There’s something for all ages and abilities here, from child-friendly rockpool safaris to surfing, coasteering, windsurfing and kayaking for the more adventurous. Written by Joanne Smith
