FROM YOUR

sga president Sarah Zamarripas Hello, Mustangs!

Hope you all have been enjoying your semester at TSTC so far and enjoyed the events we have had in the month of September. We had so many people attend our Welcome Week. Bienvenidos Day gave students the opportunity to meet the President and Vice Presidents of TSTC, and Join a Club Day was also lots of fun. Let’s not forget SGA’s Open House; hope everyone enjoyed the free ice cream and cake. For everyone that lives in the dorms, I hope you all enjoyed the delicious hot dogs and door prizes at our Housing Block Party.

We had a great turnout at Guys’ Night Out where we gave out free pizza and rootbeer to students while watching Monday Night Football on the big screen. Here is what we have to look forward to in the month of October! October 6, we will be having our annual Think Pink Party. Come out and have some fun, we will be having an informational booth on Breast Cancer. October 13, we will have our third SGA meeting of the semester; get a free lunch and earn club points! That same night, we will be having our Open Mic Night, where you can show case any of your talents! October 23, we will be having our annual National Make A Difference Day event; it’s an opportunity to give back to the community and keep Harlingen beautiful!

Can you believe it? It’s almost here, Oktoberfest that is! It will be held on Thursday, October 28 from 6-9PM. We will be having a variety of activities throughout the night including the appearance of Scooby Doo and our very own Rusty. Interested in being an actor or performer? We will be needing actors for our annual SGA Haunted House! Our meetings times for the Haunted House will be October 8, 15, and 22 at noon in the VIP room. Remember, if you have any questions, or concerns, please stop by the SGA Office in the Student Center Room 122 or contact us at 956.364.4343. Our door is always open and we love to hear from you!

General Studies in Technology Program • Are you a first generation student? • Do you have a GED? • Not sure which technical program is right for you? • Need help in college classes or adjusting to college life?

The General Studies in Technology Program is located in Building “D” and offers assistance in eliminating barriers to achieve your ultimate goal…Graduation! We pride ourselves in all our services, but if we are unable to help then we will definitely find an available resource to help you out. I bet you’re asking yourself, “So what services do they provide?” We offer FAFSA renewal assistance, scholarship assistance, goal-setting assistance, and we make you aware of community resources available to you. On top of that, we offer workshops to assist you with specific issues like time management, college basics, co-curricular involvement, resumé building, communication etiquette, and much more.

So now you’re thinking, “I’m not enrolled in a technical program, because I have NO idea what’s out there.” With over 30 technical programs at TSTC we realize it’s impossible to hear what every program can offer, so we have just the solution for that. This semester we’ve started a Program Spotlight series. Each “spotlighted” program will give you information regarding program expectations, job outlook, salary outlook, and course schedules. For a schedule of the technical program spotlights, our College 202 workshops, or to set up an appointment, please feel free to give us a call at 956.364.4163.

Advice

Ally

Q: I have a problem with the cost of cafeteria food. At one time, I paid $8.00 for two small plates of french fries. I can't go out and eat since I do not have a car. In my opinion, it is not worth eating the food in the cafeteria for a price like that. Is there a way for the cost of food to decrease or would I just have to bare with it? - PinkySD

Dear PinkySD, I'm sorry to hear that you are unsatisfied with a service provided here at TSTC. We do try to provide the student population a great and affordable atmosphere, but unfortunately the cafeteria prices are out of my hands. I merely serve as an opinion columnist. You can attend a Student Government meeting and voice your concern there. SGA is the voice of the students so they'd be able to assist you and you can stop by their office across from the TSTC Bookstore to inform them on your concern about the cafeteria pricing. Also, if you convert your money into Mustang Bucks you can get a discount by using your TechOne Card at the cafeteria and bookstore. I hope this helped you out.

Juan C. Sanchez, Jr., EA

The stars are shining bright as we stare up into the night Thinking about each other underneath the cover Of the moon's light as we lay together tonight Holding each others' hand while listening to our favorite band Then the moment finds us as it usually does But this time to make a kiss but then we hear the hiss Of my phone as it ruins the moment of more than what we had both been waiting for...

Pitch black With no Light As I hack away With all my might But going nowhere I decide to wait In hope that someone will care And find nothing to hate About me and what I do But waiting feels so bad Yet I want to be with you And wish for everything I had

health & fitness Top 5 Ways to Include Fitness in College Life Walk or Bike to Class

Go for a Walk with Friends

Be active on the way to class instead of taking the bus or car. If you have to drive to school everyday, you can still fit walking in your schedule by parking a bit further than you usually do.

Stay fit and catch up with friends at the same time. Instead of taking a shortcut back to your dorm or car, take the scenic route and get in a little extra exercise.

THE

Lady in

White Drawing by Paola Constante, DMDT

La Llorona is widely known in Mexican folklore, but many countries have their own variation of this popular tale. UNITED STATES A local legend tells of the White Lady of Acra, the ghost of a woman who died on her way home from her wedding night in the 1800s. Although no one has come into contact with her, many older people claim to have seen her especially on the abandoned dirt road she is rumored to haunt. The white lady lives near the parchments and castel hill. Branch Brook Park in Newark, New Jersey, is home to the legend of the White Lady of Branch Brook Park. GERMANY A white woman was first reported to be seen in the Berliner Schloss in 1625 and sightings have been reported up until 1790. This castle is the residence of the kings of Prussia, so the Lady has been linked to several historical figures: the guilt-ridden countess Kunigunda of OrlamĂźnde, born landgravin of Leuchtenberg (Oberpfalz), who murdered her own children and the unfortunate widow Bertha of Rosenberg. PHILIPPINES The White Lady of Balete Drive in Quezon City is said to be a ghost who appears as a long-haired woman in a white dress. According to legend, she was assulted and killed by Japanese soldiers during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines in World War II. Most of the stories that have come out about her were told by taxi drivers doing the graveyard shift. In other instances it is said that when solitary people drive by Balete Drive in the wee hours of the morning, they tend to see the face of a woman in white in the rear view mirror for a split second before the apparition disappears. Some accidents on this road are blamed on the White Lady.

MALTA According to Maltese legend, the White Lady of Mdina was killed by her lover after she was forced to marry another man. Many have claimed to see this spirit, always after eight o'clock in the evening. She usually appears to children under eight years old, heart-broken teenage boys, and elderly men. While she tells the children goodnight and bids them to return home, she advises the teenagers to "find another" or to join her and become a part of her "shadow" (her ghostly followers.) She also attempts to lure elderly men into her "shadow. BRAZIL Called Dama Branca or Mulher de Branco in Portuguese, the Brazilian Lady in White is the ghost of a young woman who died of childbirth or violent causes. She appears as a pale woman in a long white dress or a sleeping gown. Though usually speechless, the Lady in White will occasionally, in a sad voice, recount her misfortunes.

A Chance In Hell by Jim Michaels

This is a riveting account of how one brigade turned Iraq's most violent city into a model of stability. Together, the Americans and Sattar's growing band of fighters drove alQaeda from Ramadi. “A Chance in Hell” is a compelling tale of combat leadership and how a handful of men turned the tide of war at a time when it seemed hopeless.

Between a Heart and a Rock Place: A Memoir Bodily Harm by Pat Benatar with Patsi Bale Cox by Robert Dugoni One of the best-selling female rock stars of all time, the incomparable Pat Benatar writes about her life, rock 'n' roll, and how her generation changed music forever. The first solo female rocker ever to appear on MTV, Benatar writes with the same edge and attitude that was a hallmark of her music—from "Heartbreaker" to "Hit Me with Your Best Shot."

Bodily Harm opens with a big win for David Sloane and his new partner, Tom Pendergrass, in a malpractice case centered on the death of a young child. To get to the bottom of it all and find justice for the families harmed, Sloane must keep in check his overwhelming desire for revenge.
