WEEK 3 READING: LEGAR, LE CORBUSIER, AND PURISM

Question 1: What is Pictorial Space according to Le Corbusier? (Maximum 100 words) According to Le Corbusier, Pictorial Space is a space that cannot be entered or circulated through but a space seen from a distance. It is also where the viewers can understand knowledge of the real only by speculating the combination of the frontality of objects and the distance.

Question 2: The Flatness of Le Corbusier’s painting’s are attributable to two properties. What are they? And what are these pitted against?(Maximum 100 words) Le Corbusier may have concluded that the conceptual distance, a representation of a gap between the appearance of the object and the object itself, was the perfect depiction in the frontal world. Another factor that made Le Corbusier to depict the flatness is the use of texture. Therefore, the first properties is the ‘conceptual distance’, and the second is the ‘texture.’ He pitted against the usage of black to depict silhouette or cast shadow.

WEEK 4 READING: AXONOMETRIC PROJECTION: NEW GEOMETRIES AND OLD ORIGINS (FROM ‘PRACTICE: ARCHITECTURE, TECHNIQUE AND REPRESENTATION’) Question 1: Explain the difference between Pictoral (in this case perspectival) space and Projection? (Maximum 100 words) Pictorial (perspectival) represents limited, finite, closed space. Since it uses our senses to depict the world we see, the representation is merely a monotonous view of the world. While perspectival records our view of the world, projection constructs the non-existing world. It could contain abstract information and measurable precise data. Projection is intended to achieve universal applicability even with the distortion that comes along. The technical differences of pictoral space and projection is the vanishing point. Just like on the orthographic projections of plan or section, the projector does not converge.

Question 2: Where did Axonometric projection first arise, and why? (Maximum 100 words) The first axonometric projection first arises in the military context. It was used to chart the 3D trajectories of artillery projectiles.

ILLUSTRATED MARIO’S NEW WORLD

About this work: This is an axonometric drawing which was constructed from two screenshots of the actual game. The theme of this work is diorama. My aim was to create drawing of a painting of mario world with mario figurines on top of the painted paper. I used vivid colour for the figurines and desaturated colour for the mario world painting. This not only helps creating watercolour texture as well as plastic texture but also helps separating the figurines from the mario world.

Name: Mario Diorama (Digital drawing)
