Complementing the main campus is a newly renovated downtown campus that features a simulated stock-trading center, a student computer laboratory and continuing education, distance learning and multimedia services. The university is arming students with the intellectual resources to compete in a global environment. In support of that, important partnerships have been established with leading global companies such as Boeing, Raytheon, Dell, IBM and others, in which both funding and service-learning opportunities are currently active.

TERESA L. PHILLIPS Director of Athletics Since taking over the helm of the Tennessee State University athletic department back in April of 2002, Teresa Lawrence Phillips has made good on her promise to move the department to a higher level. In her time as athletic director, the athletic department has made tremendous strides on the playing field, on the Tennessee State University campus and community as well as in the classroom. Some accomplishments under the Phillips administration include the launching of the first official website for TSU Athletics in August of 2002, the revitalization of the Big Blue Booster Club, the recognition of Ohio Valley Conference Scholar Athletes, and conference championships in volleyball and women’s track. Phillips also has the distinction of being the first woman ever to coach an NCAA Division I men’s basketball team en route to being named one of the “101 Most Influential Minorities in Sports” by Sports Illustrated in 2003. She was also named as the Second Most Influential Woman in Sports in Tennessee by The Tennessean newspaper. It was not the first time Phillips had been in the national limelight, as she was named USA Today’s National Coach of the Year in 1990 and was a twotime OVC Coach of the Year selection. No stranger to athletic success, she was head coach of the Lady Tigers basketball pro-

gram at TSU for 11 seasons from 1989-2000. Phillips guided the 1993–94 squad to the program’s first-ever OVC regular season crown, the Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship, and the team’s first appearances ever in the NCAA tournament. She and her staff enjoyed their most successful season in 1994–95 as the Lady Tigers (22–7, 12–4 OVC) gained a share of the regular season title. TSU claimed its second consecutive tournament title and a trip to the NCAA tournament. Facing 21st-ranked Oregon State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the Lady Tigers clawed all night before losing in overtime, 88–75. She has been invited twice to serve as an assistant coach for USA Basketball (1995 and 1999) and was invited to serve as an assistant coach for the U.S. Olympic Festival North Squad. Prior to her stint at TSU, Phillips was head coach at Fisk University for four years. During that time, she guided the Bulldogs to WIAC League and Tournament Championships in 1987 and 1988 and was tabbed WIAC Coach of the Year twice (1987, 1988). Phillips also served as the National Youth Sports Drug Program Education Specialist and served on the NCAA Basketball Rules Committee for two years. She compiled a 68-34 overall record with the Bulldogs.

2008 - 09 TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY TIGER BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE

She graduated from Vanderbilt University with bachelor degrees in economics and business education before obtaining a Masters in Education from TSU in 1999. Phillips, who helped recruit six All-Americans and seven All-State players, spent four years as an assistant coach with the Lady Commodores from 1981 to 1984. Phillips earned several honors as a three-year letter winner at Vanderbilt. She was the first recipient of the Lady Commodore Athlete of the Year honor, given to the best allaround female athlete. In addition, she received the Nashville Civitan’s Sportsmanship Award in 1979 and 1980. Community oriented, Phillips has served on the Boys’ and Girls’ Club Board of Directors since 1995. She has held memberships in several boards and organizations, including the Black Coaches Association, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, the Nashville Sports Council, the NCAAChampionship and Competition Cabinet and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Phillips has two sons, Micah and Kyle.

TSU STUDENT-ATHLETES GRADUATION SUCCESS RATE AT 85 PERCENT With ith the recent release (10/14/08) of the NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) Study, udy, the Tennessee State University athletics department received welcomed empirical evidence that they are achieving the goals off athletics director Teresa Phillips. The recent study for student-athletes from the years 1998-2001 showed that the graduation rates for studentathletes at Tennessee State University was eighty-five percent (85%), which placed TSU student-athletes in the Top 3 among colleges in the state of Tennessee following only Vanderbilt (94%) and Belmont (87%). Additionally, Tennessee State University remains in second place among HBCU’s following Alcorn State (MS) with 99%. While TSU is a limited resources institution, the Athletics Director consistently makes academics a priority. “I am very pleased with all student-athletes’ perseverance and commitment toward academic excellence.” says Athletics Director, Teresa Phillips. Data shows that Tennessee State University student-athletes are graduating at an increasing rate within a six-year period. The Federal Graduation Rates for scholarship student-athletes beginning 2001-2002 was released this week, and TSU finished with a high of 85 percent. “I am so proud of the graduation success that our student-athletes are experiencing at TSU,” said Dr. Johnnie C. Smith, Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Services. “The new Academic Reform Graduation Success Rate serves as a wonderful tool in keeping academics a priority, and the TSU Athletics Academic Services staff works extremely hard in keeping our student-athletes on track to graduate within four-years or sooner.” 2008 - 09 TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY TIGER BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE

2008 - 09 SEASON OUTLOOK Fresh off a 2007-08 OVC Championship game appearance, the Tennessee State University men’s basketball team will look once again to return to the final stage, this time with a different outcome. TSU finished the 2007-08 season with an overall record of 15-17 and slated a conference record of 10-10. TSU made it to the OVC Championship game for the first time under head coach Cy Alexander and for the first time since the 1998 season. Tennessee State lost eight players including five seniors from last year’s squad. Five Tigers return, including three starters from last season. Gerald Robinson, Jr., Jerrell Houston, and Darius Cox will give the Tigers a solid nucleus. Sophomore Gerald Robinson, a 2007-08 All-Freshmen Team and 2008-09 OVC Preseason Team selection, was TSU’s second leading scorer last year averaging 15.2 points per game. He was selected OVC Freshman of the Week six times last season. Senior post player Jerrell Houston was a huge presence in the paint for the Tigers posting 11.6 points and a team leading 6.1 boards per contest. Houston was named to the 2008-09 OVC Preseason Team. Sophomore Darius Cox saw action in all 32 games last season including 24 starts. He was the team’s second leading rebounder (4.7 rpg). 2008 - 09 TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY TIGER BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE

“I expect us to bulid on what we had last year. We won five out seven of our last games on our way to the OVC Championship,” said Head Coach Cy Alexander. “For us to continue the success we had at the end of the year, Jerrell, Darius, and Gerald will have to step it up and show leadership while strengthening every aspect of their game.” Coach Alexander will have the task of replacing All-OVC first team selection and leading scorer Bruce Price, the leadership of point guard Riley Ervin as well as the offense of three-point threat LaDarious Weaver this season. Several talented junior college transfers joined the team during the off season and will be called upon to contribute early in the season. Jeremiah Crutcher and Lonnie Funderburke were key acquistions and will bring a tremendous amount off experience to the team. Crutcher, a transfer from Okaloosa-Walton Community College, shot 43 percent from the field last season playing point guard for the Raiders. Transferring in from Palm Beach Community College, Funderburke played in all 30 games for the Panthers. Funderburke will add depth to the forward position. “We are expecting immediate contribution from our newcomers. Crutcher was a standout at Okaloosa-Walton, he is a great defender and has extensive knowledge of the game,” said Alexander. “Funderburke is a strong athlete, tenacious defender, strong rebounder and has a dominant presence in the front court.”

The Tigers return five players from last year’s squad. Left to right, Stephen Evans (40), Darius Cox (20), Jerrell Houston (3), Gerald Robinson, Jr. (22) and Emmanuel Gaiter (33).

Head Coach Cy Alexander instructs players during a timeout against Georgia Tech

The future of TSU basketball is crafted with the signing of freshmen Parker Smith and Derek Shoecraft. Smith and Shoecraft are expected to make an impact for the Tigers offensively. Smith, a Georgia High School 7AAA Player of the Year, was one of best shooters in the nation in the high school ranks shooting 54 percent from the field for Chestatee High School making the All-State Second Team. Shoecraft’s versatile play helped him average 18 points per game for Wyoming High School while being named to the All-Ohio Third team. “Our two high school recruits are solid players who will be successful Tiger basketball players in the future,” said Alexander. “Smith is one of the best shooters coming out of high school and Shoecraft is a very cerebral player who has the ability to play both guard positions.” Tennessee State is predicted to finish fifth in the OVC for the 2008-09 season. The Tigers will once again face a tough non-conference schedule for the 2008-09 season with opponents such as Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Alabama, Northern Illinois and Atlantic Sun Conference Champions Belmont University. “This team has great work ethic and a host of talent. We are very confident this season in completing what we started last year when we made it to the OVC Championship game,” said Alexander. “With our core leaders remaining healthy and playing to their ability, we have a great shot in getting home court advantage in the first round of the OVC Tournament and making the NCAA Tournament.” 2008 - 09 TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY TIGER BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE

OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE Entering ntering its 61st year, the Ohio Valley Conference continues ontinues to build on the success that has made it the ation’s eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conference. conference nation’s In 2008, for only the second time in the past decade, the Conference expanded by adding Southern Illinois University Edwardsville as the league’s 11th member. The move expanded the OVC’s geographical footprint to the St. Louis market and marked the first change in membership since expanding to the state of Alabama (Jacksonville State, Samford) in 2003. The OVC’s proud past dates back to 1948, but seeds for the new league were actually planted in 1941. It was then that Roy Stewart, the athletics director at Murray State, Charles (Turkey) Hughes, the athletics director at Eastern Kentucky, and Kelly Thompson, the public relations director at Western Kentucky, first broached the idea of forming a new conference. Discussions were put on hold by World War II, but reemerged Feb. 27-28, 1948 at the Kentucky Hotel in Louisville as the three original institutions combined with Morehead State, Louisville and Evansville to form the OVC.

In the 1950s, the OVC became a pioneer on a much more significant scale socially. During times of racial segregation, league member Morehead State became * - 1st team All-OVC in 2007-08 # - 2nd team All-OVC in 2007-08 $ - All-Newcomer Team OVC PRESEASON PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Lester Hudson, UT Martin one of the first non-traditionally black mid-southern institutions to accept a black student. In 1958, Marshall (*Schools were not allowed to rank their own team. Nine points awarded for a first-place vote, eight for second, etc.) Banks earned athletically-related aid at Morehead, which signed a second black athlete, Howard Murphy, a year later. In 1961, Murphy earned all-conference recognition as a halfback in football. With racial barriers broken, the rest of the institutions in the league began to provide educational and athletic opportunities to African-Americans. A first in the OVC occurred in 2008, when the league had a first round draft pick in both the NFL (Tennessee State’s Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie) and Major League Baseball (Eastern Kentucky’s Christian Friedrich) Drafts in the same school year. The playing field isn’t the only place where OVC athletes are working hard. The league also recognizes excellence in the classroom. Six Scholar-Athlete Awards are presented yearly to male and female athletes, while others are commended for their academic success by being Medal of Honor recipients or earning a spot on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Additionally, the league annually presents one institutional Academic achievement Award, as well as separate team awards in each Conference-sponsored sport. The vision of leadership demonstrated by the Founding Fathers in 1948 remains alive today as the OVC prepares for the future. One example is in regard to the current trend in collegiate athletics administration for increased involvement of university presidents in setting policies and making rules. The presidents of OVC institutions, however, have always governed the Conference, long before presidential governance became a national theme. The OVC sponsors the following sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis and track for men, and basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and volleyball for women. In addition, the OVC also sponsors the combined men’s and women’s sport of rifle. Now in its sixth decade of competition, the Ohio Valley Conference has grown significantly from its humble beginnings while increasing the number of athletics opportunities it provides for students. Current league representatives include charter members Eastern Kentucky University, Morehead State University and Murray State University, along with Austin Peay State University, Eastern Illinois University, Jacksonville State University, Southeast Missouri State University, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Tennessee State University, Tennessee Technological University and the University of Tennessee at Martin. Tennessee State has been a member of the Ohio Valley Conference since 1986.
