HEAD COACH DANA FORD ON TRYING TO BRING BACK THE TSU/MTSU RIVALRY } “We need to win one first. They’ve kind of owned us in terms of wins and losses. Last year’s game was a closer game, but we still ended up losing. Years ago when MTSU was in the Ohio Valley, this was a pretty intense rivalry. Obviously in the 80s and 90s we had some really good teams and they had good teams. I guess it’s time for us to do our part to bring it back… I think it’s a game we’ll try to play every year.”
PRESEASON INFORMATION } Redshirt seniors Tahjere McCall and Wayne Martin were selected as Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference by the conference’s coaches and sports information directors. } As a team, Tennessee State was picked second in the East Division in the OVC Preseason Media Poll. } In the OVC Coaches Poll, TSU was also picked second in the East Division while picking up six first-place votes for the East Division and six overall first-place votes.
ABOUT THE BLUE RAIDERS } The Blue Raiders are off to a 2-0 start with wins over Milligan and Murray State. } Selected second in the Conference USA Preseason Poll, MTSU won the Conference USA Tournament last season and upset second-seeded Michigan State in the NCAA Tournament. } Among the returners from last year’s team are Preseason All-Conference USA selections Reggie Upshaw and Giddy Potts. } Upshaw is leading the Blue Raiders with 10.5 rebounds per game and Potts has dished out a team-best 4.0 assists per game through two games. Arkansas transfer JaCorey Williams has made an immediate impact, putting up a team-high 21.5 points per game on 56.3 percent shooting.
ABOUT THIS YEAR’S TEAM } Nine players, including three starters are back from last year’s team, which went 20-11 and earned a berth in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. } Third-year Head Coach Dana Ford earned OVC Coach of the Year, NABC District 19 Coach of the Year, Ben Jobe Award (Top Minority Coach) and BoxToRow Coach of the Year (HBCU) in 2015-16. } Redshirt seniors Tahjere McCall and Wayne Martin headline TSU’s returners. Both earned Preseason All-OVC accolades. } Among the newcomers are Ken’Darrius Hamilton (Meridian CC), Delano Spencer (Coffeyville CC) and A’Torey Everett (Murray State College), who all led their junior colleges in scoring a year ago.
EARLY SEASON VICTORIES } TSU is 3-0 for the first time since the 1994-95 season. } The Tigers are 3-0 for the fourth time since joining Division I prior to the 1976-77 season. } It is the first time in school history the Tigers are 3-0 when the team’s first three opponents compete at the Division I level.
SHOES TO FILL } TSU will look to replace seven letterwinners from last year’s team. } The Tigers will be tasked with replacing last season’s leading scorer in Keron DeShields (16.5 ppg), who is now playing professionally in Italy. DeShields earned First Team All-OVC accolades. } In total, 52.3 percent of the team’s scoring from last year’s squad is not back for the 2015-16 season.

IN RANGE. } In TSU’s 69-61 win at Santa Clara on Nov. 13, the Tigers shot 10-for-16 (62.5 percent) from three-point range. } It was the sixth time the Tigers have made 10 or more threes in a game in the Dana Ford era. } Delano Spencer finished 5-for-6 from long distance in the game. The five made threes matches the most by a Tiger in a game a year ago.
