User-centered design as a key for (re)development Project 1.0 TU Delft master thesis Graduation studio: ExploreLab 18 Design tutor: Robert Nottrot 2014-2015 Location: Sofia, Bulgaria

“

The central premise of USER-CENTERED DESIGN is that the best designed products and services result from understanding the needs of the people who will use them —Design Council

The graduation project “User-centered design as a key for (re)development” has the goal to define a strategy how to redevelop a neglected city centre area in Sofia, Bulgaria through a suitable residential architectural design. The project consists of two main parts – research and design. The research is about the city centre dwellers of Sofia and their living preferences and demands and how this can be accomplished in between the boundaries of the municipality urban goals. The research defines a theoretical basis for the architectural residential design. The chosen site location needs urgently a redevelopment. Most of the people are moving out, the ones still there just can’t afford to move out. At least half of the buildings are left empty in such a bad condition that they are almost falling apart.

I decided for this graduation project because of some sentimental reasons, but I also believe that its value will have larger social impact. The idea is to involve the residents in the process. The first step was the research on the dwellers living preferences in Sofia. It was accomplished by conducting interviews with the residents of the research neighbourhood. I hope by introducing a new urban and residential concept that the people will become more initiative and cooperative in order to transform the neighbourhood. The design is about one big plot, but the overall idea is to set a standard for all plots in this neighbourhood.

Sustainable Design, Time-based Project 2.0 TU Delft Design and research studio: Smart Architecture Design tutors: Ir. Kristel Aalbers, Peter Teeuw Spring 2013 Location: Delft, The Netherlands

TISD is a timed based sustainable design studio which topic is a development of a research and design proposal for an area in the city of Delft. The studio starts as a workshop in order to produce an urban scheme for a chosen neighbourhood. The urban plan is then divided in pieces among the workshop-studio participants. The task is to develop design in 3 stages for each of the plots. The pre-definite stages are 3 months, 30 years and 300 years. The design needs to be consistent and there should be a clear link between the different stages. Another important requirement is the integration between all the plots in the area which engages all students in a team work.

3 months map

30 years map

My proposal for the first stage - the 3 months is to create a winter festival facility with educational and entertaining purpose. The materials of the pavilions of the festival are chosen in a way they can be reused by the community. For the second stage - the 30 years I design an self-sufficient single family house which suggest that a family can grow all their food and produced all their electricity. The concept is about floating houses with floating green houses which should be the solution for the future raising water levels. The third stage is the 300 years period. The design suggests that most of Delft will be flooded so the floating house of the 30 years stage will develop into a self-sufficient floating neighbourhood which can travel and change position.

300 years map

3months design The 3 months design is based on the concept of temporality. The idea of creating an event during the winter period comes from the fact that most of the neighborhood plots are creating summer events. The winter festival will help in promoting the future development of a new sustainable area because it will create a seasonal cycle of events in the area. The festival can happen only in cooperation with some of the other plots. The main partner is the harbour, where an ice rink will be designed. The ice rink will be used for figure skating shows, hockey plays and just for fun.

The main focus of the festival is to education on the raising water levels. Big part of the festival facilities will be pavillions for promoting the “living water smart” and “living off the grid” principles. People will be informed about the development of the area and encouraged to take part in a future communal experiment. As a first step into a more sustainable life the pavillions will be designed out of reusable and recyclable materials.

ENERGY PRODUCTION

The 30 years design presents an energy concept for new dwellings which is based on the assumption that in 30 years houses should be no longer an energy consumer, but an energy producer. In search of the right orientation of the house a calculation of the energy production taking into account roof orientation, roof angle and solar irradiation in the Netherlands is made. In the future we can easily predict that dwellings will be entirely self sufficient in terms of energy.

Aquaponics system is all about balance between the plants growned and the fish raised. To achieve a balance the ratio between fish and plants in the system should be based on feeding rate ratio. One of the most important factors is to size the two major components of the aquaponics system - the fish component and the plant component.

Floating House

The desing topic is a floating prefabricated single-family house. The plan is based on a simple compact shape with modular dimentions. The floor area of 115m2 in total includes all the features needed for an average household. The first floor plan presents an open space with kitchen, dining room and living room. The living room has double high and is oriented towards the south. The whole house is advantaged by a passive solar heating effect as a result of the completely glazed south facade. The house is highly insulated, open to the south and the water and closed to the north.

- Photovoltaic System: The whole roof is covered with crystalline photovoltaic panels so that maximum energy production could be achieved. - Water Treatment System: The “grey water, produced in the house is purified in green algae tank in the green house. The main aim is a completely sealed aerobic process of purification and composting by algae. - Urban Farming: Through a balanced aquaponics system two families can raise fish and grow their own organic vegetables in sufficient amount. - Passive Heating: The greenhouse is used to purify and store preheated by the sun air. This solar room plays an important role in the heating and ventilation systems of the house. The two houses benefit from one greenhouse. - Waste: The waste is stored and recycled in septic & composting tank placed in the concrete foundation.

Viewing Deck | Information Pavilion Project 3.0 TU Delft MADD design studio Design tutors: Engbert van der Zaag Fall 2012 Location: Brussels, Belgium

The info pavilion “VIEWING DECK” is situated in the circle of the Schuman roundabout just in the middle of the EU administrative buildings. The volume is oriented in direction to the construction site of the new Masterplan of Christian de Portzamparc for the European quarter in Brussels and wants to emphasize the big urban axis, around which the new plan is organized. The pavilion has just one simple volume developed from an ascending platform. On the top is placed the model of the Masterplan and the visitor can find there also a perfect view to the urban axis and the construction site.

The building has a layered structure, which begins with the designed underground infrastructure and ends with the multilayered façade construction. The materialization is a steel structure covered with climate polycarbonate façade. The volume is an open space inside with glass walls separating the presentation/meeting rooms. There are a few used materials which aims to emphasize on the purity of the design. After the construction period the lifespan of the pavilion will come to its end. The idea is to leave the platform without the cover (the façade) and to use it again as a public space for interaction and exposition. It will also cover the new developed square which gives access to the metro station and the public parking lot.

Ice Stadium Project 4.0 UACG Master Thesis Design and research studio: Architectural constructions Design tutors: Prof. Dr. arch. Jeko Tilev Winter 2011-2012 Location: Sofia, Bulgaria

The topic of my graduation project is an “Ice Stadium. I chose it myself, mostly motivated by my fascination for ice skating. One of the first challenges was the choice of a suitable terrain. The chosen site is part of an existing sports complex, which includes a sports hall, football stadium and 2nd sports hall which is not being used as one. The abandoned sports hall was built in the 90s of last century, but after the change of the political system has remained unfinished.

The task of my thesis is to design an ice stadium, extended to include two ice rinks - one main field with 6,000 seats for spectators, a training field and the necessary service facilities. The architectural appearance of the complex is a result of analyzing the image of the existing building, highlighting its constructional design aesthetics and transferring this pattern over the entire composition.

Exhibition Centre Project 5.0 UACG Design and research studio: Architectural constructions Design tutors: Prof. Dr. arch. Jeko Tilev Winter 2010 Location: Sofia, Bulgaria

The plot of the project is a really special place in the heart of the city. The whole neighborhood is a meeting of buildings which are historical, religious and architectural treasures. That is why the concept of the exhibition centre was to be a part of the unimportant surroundings, making it almost invisible as a background of this splendid atmosphere. Almost the whole building is designed to be under the ground. Above the surface of the square is only one triangle pyramid. In this case the active fifth faรงade represents the roof and it is a part of the whole square.

The project is a composition of triangles, whereby every one of these triangles is moveable, making the roof absolutely dynamic. The movement of the roof depends on the sun shining and is regulated by a mechanism. The idea is that the natural sunlight in the exhibition hall could be fully controlled and used at the most, not only for lightening the hall but also for heating it.
