Project discription

Canvey Island Pottery Factory Unit 7 Edgelands: On World (Earth) Archive Tutors: Dr Shaun Murray & Yorgos Loizos University of Greenwich,London

The site is first terraformed. After the terraforming stage the site is uniquely shaped and designed for the Pottery Factory to nestle in. The site becomes an island into the (Canvey) island. The Organization of the island includes a small pottery factory with two main workshops(industrial/general potteries workshop and public workshop with cafe, shop, playgrounds, public spaces) and smaller facilities spread across the site for storage, excavation, transportation (follies). Near the Pottery Factory operates a test track for trucks. The whole island has a dynamic and constantly changing landscape, because of the many excavation and digging sites for materials , as well as the areas for public allotments, park spaces and playgrounds. The project has the aim to bring the clay industry back in Canvey Island, and meanwhile to develop new community spaces (parks, playgrounds, allotments) for leasure, and Public Pottery workshop with educational purpose for the people of Canvey Island.

Sand Casting Workshop Unit 2 GRIMM ARCHITECTURES Tutors: Pascal Bronner Caroline Rabourdin University of Greenwich,London

Project description The site is transformed into an interactive public space for children, as well as parents and friends. The program initially include several themed areas to be developed on the site, such as a real garden, exercising and resting area. But the main building of the project is the Sand Casting Workshop. It is directly driven by Froebel’s gifts and occupations, The gifts: objects fixed in form (blocks), which through play show the child the underlying concept represented by the object. The occupations allow freedom, consisting of things that children could shape and manipulate ( sand, water, pewter, wax) Sprinkler system and entertaining program Sprinkler system is used to keep the sand moist for easy processing. Mist and fog sprinklers are used in order to create steamy and cloudy atmosphere during the process. Both for slowly watering the sand and creating interesting and entertaining experience for the visitors. During the process visitors are able to get on the second level above the sprinklers and enjoy the atmosphere wihout getting wet and feel like standing on top of clouds. Every few hours before the start of the sprinklers a sound warn the visitors.
