BRIEF

PROCESS

AT FIRST GLANCE AT THE COVER, IT MAY SEEM AS AN ALIEN HABITAT. HOWEVER, THIS IS THE AVANT-GARDE OF DESIGN, A MASTER PIECE OF ART, AND MAY I INTRODUCE YOU: THE STRIP CLUB OF TEMPLE STREET.

PHOTOGRAPHY

THE SCOPE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO EXPLORE THE NATURE OF TEMPLE STREET IN ORDER TO DEVELOP AN ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN THAT FIT INTO THE NATURE AND THE ATMOSPHERE OF THE STREET. IN THE END, YOU WILL HAVE A CERTAIN DEGREE OF MY UNDERSTANDING TOWARDS THE FABRIC OF TEMPLE STREET.

SKETCHING MODELING MAPPING MATERIAL RESEARCH RENNOVATION


THE AIM OF THIS EXCERISE IS TO EXPLORE AND FEEL THE ATMOSPHERE AND SITUATIONS THAT THE PEOPLE LIVING OR WOKRING IN TEMPLE STREET FEEL, AND TO GET A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONDITION THAT PEOPLE THERE EXPERIENCE CONTRASTING OTHER PEOPLE LIVING IN HONG KONG.

PHOTOGRAPHY

WE NEED TO SELECT A GROUP OF PEOPLE, POLICEMEN, SHOPKEEPER, PROSTITUTE FOR EXAMPLE, AND TAKE SIX PHOTOS OF THEM IN DIFFERENT PLACES IN TEMPLE STREET. AFTERWARD, COMPOSE A POEM THAT FIT INTO THE NATURE OF YOUR SUBJECT. AND I HAVE CHOSEN SHOPPER KEEPER AS MY SUBJECT.

TO FURTHER EXPLORE A PLACE, IT IS ESSENTIAL TO STUDY THE DETAILS. THE ESSENSE OF THIS EXCERISE IS OBSERVATION. THROUGH DRAWING A PLAN AND SECTION OF A SPACE IN TEMPLE STREET, YOU WILL LOOK INTO THE VERY SUBTLE DETAILS OF EVERY CORNER AND WALL IN ORDER TO DEPICT THE TRUE NATURE OF TEMPLE STREET.

SKETCHING

BASED ON WHAT WE HAVE PREVIOUSLY OBSERVED THROUGH PHOTOGRAPH, DRAW OUT A PLAN AND A SECTION THAT BEST DEPICTS AN INTRIGUING MOMENTS AND A COMMON PHENOMENA IN THE STREET. ONE OF THE REQUIREMENTS IS TO BE AS INTRICATE AS POSSIBLE BY MANIPLUATING LINE WEIGH AND SCALE.

THE AIM OF THIS EXCERISE IS TO CREATE A SPACE THAT COULD CONNECT TO TEMPLE STREET. THROUGH PROCESS, WE WILL GET A SENSE OF WHAT ELEMENTS AND LOGIC THAT CONSITUTES THE FABRIC OF THE STREET. AT THE END, A MASTER PIECE OF ART TO SHOWCASE THE BEAUTY OF TEMPLE STREET.

MODELING

WITH A GROUP OF THREE CLASS MEMBERS, WE HAVE TO BUILD A WHITE CARDBOARD MODEL BASED ON WHAT WE HAVE OBSERVED AND LEARNED FROM THE PREVIOUS EXCERISES AND AFTERWARD TAKE A SERIES OF PHOTOS TO EXHIBIT THE BEAUTY OF THE ARCHITECTURAL SPACE.


PREPARATION

DRAWING REFERENCE OF THE CANOPY FROM A TYPICAL OLD RESIDENTIAL BUILDING IN TEMPLE STREET

IN PREPARAION, WE DID SOME RESEARCH AND PHOTOGRAPHY OF TEMPLE STREET AND ADOPTED SOME OF THE ELEMENTS ( WINDOW CANOPY FOR EXAMPLE ) INTO OUR MODEL. AS FOR WHAT TO BUILD, WE DECIDED TO USE WHAT WE HAVE DONE FOR THE SKETCHING EXCERISE AND USED THAT AS OUR PLAN AND SECTION FOR THE MODELING.

THE FLOOR PLAN FOR ECOND FLOOR IS BASED ENTIRELY ON MY SKETCHING EXCERISE.

SECTION OF MODEL

THE GROUND FLOOR IS BASED ON MY TEAMMATE DANIEL’S DRAWING OF AN ANTIQUE SHOP IN TEMPLE STREET.

THE REQUIREMENT FOR THE THICKNESS OF THE FUNDATION SLAB IS 50MM, AND THE THICKNESS OF SIDEWALK SHOULD BE 10MM. SUCH REQUIREMENT IS FOR ALL THE WORK FROM OTHER GROUPS TO ALIGN, AND EVENTUALLY FORM A STREET WHEN LINING UP.




ONE OF THE TWO ROOMS IN THE SECOND FLOOR OF THE BUILDING. IT CONSISTS OF A CLOSET, AIRCONDITION AND A BED. IT DEPICTS A TYPICAL LIVING CONDITION OF WHERE AND HOW A FAMILY OF TWO WOULD LIVE.

A CABINET THAT FILLED WITH OLD DIRTY BOOKS, A CLASSICAL VINYL RECORDER, A STATUE OF BUDDHA, AND A PICTURE FRAME. IT SUMS UP WHAT A TYPICAL ELDERS HAVE IN THEIR CABINET.

A STAIR CASE LEADING UP TO SECOND FLOOR. AND THE PICTURE FROM THE RIGHT IS A FACADE BOLDUP, AND IT IS TECTONICALLY BUILT WITH HINGES AND STEELS INSIDE TO ENABLE THE WINDOWS TO OPEN AND CLOSE.




THE PURPOSE OF MAPPING IS TO VISUAL THE TARGETED AGENTS AND EVAULATE THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH EACH OTHER. THE AIM FOR THIS EXCERISE IS TO FIND AN INTERESTING PHENOMENA AND RELATIONSHIP THROUGH AND VISUAL THEM IN A VISUAL FASHION.

MAPPING

FIRSTLY, WE NEED TO DRAWING OUT THE STREET IN A WAY THAT WILL BEST SHOW THE SIHOUETTE OF TEMPLE STREET. THEN, WE HAVE SELECT TWO AGENTS, WHICH ARE COUNTABLE OR MEASURABLE, AND MAP THEM OUT IN A GRAPHICAL STYLE.


MY FIRST ATTEMPT: I HAVE CHOSEN MANHOLES AND BACKALLEY. ( REF: LEFT PICTURE ) AT FIRST THOUGHT, I AWAYS THINK THAT MANHOLES REPRESENT THE MYSTERY OF A CITY AS IT RESEMBLES A ENTRANCE TO THE UNDERGROUND. AS FOR BACKALLEY, IT REPRSENTS DANGER AND CERTAIN DEGREE OF MYSTERY AS WELL. THEREFORE, I WAS TRYING TO FIND SOME SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THE TWO.


FINAL VERSION: THIS TIME I HAVE CHOSEN BACKALLEY AND THE GREENERY, EVERYTHING THAT IS CONSIDERED GREEN, THAT GROWS WITHIN THE BACKALLEY FOR MY MAPPING. MOSTLY WHAT I FOUND FOR GREENERY IS MOSS, SOMETHING CONSIDERED TO BE TEDIOUS BYPEOPLE. THE SIMILARITY BETWEEN THE TWO IS THAT THEY ARE BOTH UNWELCOME AND UNWANTED. AND THROUGH MAPPING (REF: RIGHT PICTURE ), I HOPE TO FIND OUT SOME OF THEIR CONNECTIONS AND STORIES.


THIS IS A STUDY OF MATERIAL, BUILDING OR CULTURAL MATERIALS FROM TEMPLE STREET SPECIFICALLY. THROUGH FINDING OF THE MATERIAL, WE WILL LEARN ABOUT WHAT AND HOW THEY ARE CONSTRUCTED AT THE FIRST PLACE AND WHY IS IT BEING CHOSEN FOR ‘‘THE MATERIAL’’

MATERIAL RESEARCH

WE NEED TO FIND SOME MATERIALS FROM TEMPLE STREET THAT BEST REPRESENTS THE ESSENCE OF THE STREET CULTURE AND STICK ALL THEM INTO THE BOX AND DECORATE THEM IN A SUITABLE WAY.


THE ADVERTISEMENT STICKERS HERE ARE TAKEN OFF FROM THE WALL IN TEMPLE STREET. AS FOR THE CONCRETE MATERIAL, IT WAS TAKEN FROM ONE OF THE OLD BUILDING.


THE FINAL PHASE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO PICK A LOCATON IN TEMPLE STREET AND RENNOVATE IT WITH A CREATIVE DESIGN. THROUGHOUT THE PROCESS, WE LEARNED HOW TO GATHER INFORMATION, HOW TO PRESENT THEM, AND HOW TO BREAK THEM DOWN AND EVAULATE THEM. NOW WE HAVE TO LEARN HOW TO CREATE THEM.

RENNOVATION

FIRSTLY, WE NEED TO DRAW A 3D COMPUTER MODEL RENDERING OF A PART OF TEMPLE STREET. THEN WE PICK A SPOT AND EXTRUDE A 6M X 6M CUBE FROM THE EXISTING SPOT. BASED ON THE PREVIOUS MAPPING EXCERISE, WE NOW HAVE TO PLACE ALL THE DATA WE GATHERED IN THE MAPPING AND PLACE THEM INTO THE 3D MODEL IN ORDER TO COME UP WITH A DESIGN. MY DESIGN IS FOR A STRIP CLUB.


BACKGROUND: FOR LOCATION SELECTION, I HAVE CHOSEN THE CORNER PLACE BESIDE THE TEMPLE STREET SIGNATURE ENTRANCE FROM THE MONGKOK SIDE. AFTER SEVERAL VISITS TO THE SITE, I FEEL STRONGELY THAT THIS IS WHERE ALL THE GLAMOR OF TEMPLE STREET BELONGED: ALL THE STALLS, THE PROSITUTIONS, THE DELICIOUS STREET FOOD, THE CONTERFEIT CD RETAILERS. GOING BACK TO MY PHOTOGRAPHY EXCERISE, ALL THE DESPERATE LOOK S ON THE SHOPKEEPERS’ FACES CONSTANTLY REMIND ME OF THE BURDON AND ANGER THAT THEY HAVE TOWARDS LIFE AND DESIRE, WHICH MY MAIN MOTIVATION FOR DESIGNING A STRIP CLUB HERE.

THE LEFT PICTURES ARE MY 3D COMPUTER RENDERINGS FOR TEMPLE STREET. THE SECOND UPPER RIGHT PICTURE IS THE STREET BEING EXTRUDED, LEFT OVER A 6M X 6M X 6M CUBICAL VOID. THE LOWER LEFT PICTURE IS ANOTHER ANGLE FOR LOOKING AT THE EXTRUDED VOID. THE LOWER RIGHT PICTURE IS THE EXTRUDED CUBE WHICH IS THE FUNDATION OF MY DESIGN. AS SHOWN IN THE PICTURE, SOME OF THE DETAILS, SUCH AS THE PIPE WORKS AND THE FALSE CEILING, ARE ESSENTAIL TO CONVINCE THAT IT IS A PIECE OF ARCHITECTURE TAKEN OUT FROM THE STREET. FUNDATION CUBE


1 ST DESIGN THE UPPGER COLLAGE IS A STREET PERSPECTIVE AND THE LOWER ONE IS A INTERIOR PERSPECTIVE OF THE STRIP CLUB. THE SECOND FLOOR IS FULLY GLAZED WITH A GLASS CAPSULE STICKING OUT FROM THE ARCHITECTURE. THIS DESIGN IS BASED ON THE FUNDATION WITH SOME INTERIOR RENNOVATION. THE SPOTLIGHT PERHAPS IS THE BOLD ATTEMPT OF USING GLASS FOR A PORTION OF THE FACADE. HOWEVER, THE MESSAGE OF ANGER AND DESPERATE IS NOT STRONGE ENOUGH, THUS I SHALL SEEK FURTHER DEVELOPMENT.


REFERENCED FROM THE MAPPING EXCERISE, I ADOPTED THE IDEA OF GREENERY INTO MY 2ND DESIGN. THE RIGHT MAPPING IS TAKEN FROM THE RED INDICATION SHOWN BELOW IN THE MAP OF TEMPLE STREET

THE LEFT ISOMETRIC VIEWS SHOWS WHERE ALL THE GREENERY SPOTTED IN MY FUNDATION CUBE. THE GRAPHIC EXPRESSION IS STRONGE WITH ALL THE TENTACLE-LIKE GREENERY SPREADING ALL ACROSS THE FUNDATION. IT WAS THEN I TOOK OUT THE FUNDATION, AND WHAT’S LEFT OVER IS A STRONG MANIFESTION OF TENSION AND ANGER.

ISOMETRIC VIEWS

THE DYNAMICS OF THE TENTACLE STRUCTURE. EVERY SURFACE IS STRETCHABLE TO FORM A DESIRED SHAPE TO CATER THE NEED OF THE SERVICE. THE EXPOSED MACHINERY SHOWS HOW ALL THE MECHANIC WORK.


2 ND DESIGN THE UPPGER COLLAGE IS A STREET PERSPECTIVE AND THE LOWER ONE IS A INTERIOR PERSPECTIVE OF THE STRIP CLUB. THE HUGE CONTRAST WITH OTHER BUILDINGS IN THE STREET HAS ALREADY MADE THE PIECE STAND OUT AS AN UNIQUE SCENERY. THE DESIGN IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TO THE 1 ST DESIGN. THE SPOTLIGHT HERE IS THE MATERIAL USED FOR THE ENTIRE SPACE, BOTH THE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR. THE ORGANIC TENTACLE CAN SHAPE ITSELF INTO ANY FORM TO FIT INTO THE NATURE OF THE JOB. FOR EXAMPLE, WITH A TENTACLE STICKING UP, IT BECOMES A POLE AND A CLUSTER OF TENTACLES GATHER, IT FORMS A LOUNGE. THIS UNIQUE MATERIAL ALLOWS SPACE TO BE USED FREELY.


THIS RENDERING DEPICTS A SCENE WHERE THE INTERIOR TECTONIC SPACE IS CONTRASTING THE STREET OUTSIDE. EVERYTHING INSIDE THE CLUB IS CURVE AND CONSTANTLY CHANGING SHAPES, WHEREAS THE EXTERIOR IS CALM AND RECTANGLAR COMPARATIVELY. AS FOR THE FACADE, IT CONTINUES CHANGING EVERY SECOND. WHENEVER A CUSTOMER ENTERS, HE WILL BE WELCOMED BY THE TENTACLES LIFTING UP TO CREATE A THRESHOLD FOR HIM TO ENTER.

ANOTHER PERSPECTIVE OF THE INTERIOR. AGAIN, IT SHOWS ALL THE CURVALINEAR STRUCTURES KEEP CHANGING THE DYNAMIC OF THE SPACE.

TENTACLES AND SPACE

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TENTACLE STRUCTURE AND THE CUBIC 6M SPACE ARE SHOWN IN THE RIGHT IMAGES FOR REFERENCE. IN TERMS OF SPACIAL QUALITY, TENTACLE STRUCTURE ALLOWS SPACE TO FORM ACCORDING TO ITS NEED. FOR EXAMPLE, IN THE UPPER LEFT IMAGES, THE STRUCTURE FORMS A LOUNGE AND A DANCER IN FRONT OF A MAN WHO IS SITTING COMFORTABLY THERE.
