PEOPLE

Cultural preservation: ensuring that the true economic benefit of travel is felt by local communities.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT

PLANET

This is the goal. It is our responsibility to ensure our impact on the planet we call home, the people we visit, and the wildlife we find there, is a positive one. African Travel takes steps to address this impact through its sustainability strategy, How We Tread Right, and through its TreadRight Foundation.

African Travel focuses on:

Sustainability and conservation: ensuring that we’re protecting our invaluable landscapes and natural resources.

WILDLIFE

Protection of our world’s wildlife: while advocating for the highest standard of ethical wildlife experiences.

SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY

HOW WE TREAD RIGHT (HWTR)

The 5-year HWTR strategy sets the direction for sustainability at African Travel. It is based on 11 measurable goals, anchored to the United Nations Global Goals, which were developed to address our impact on our three pillars of Planet, its People and Wildlife.

THE ROAD TO NET ZERO

As a part of it’s Climate Action Plan, African Travel’s parent company

The Travel Corporation (TTC) has formally committed to carbon reduction targets with the goal of reaching net zero for our emissions.

To date we have supported more than 60 community based projects worldwide via our TreadRight Foundation. In 2021, we also launched our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) strategy and employ people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and feature products and experiences in Africa that are inclusive.

COMMITTED TO TRANSPARENCY

View it’s Impact Report and learn more about African Travel’s sustainable projects and the progress made.

Experiences THAT MATTER

To travel is to learn; it is to support the people we meet along the way. And this is precisely what African Travel’s MAKE TRAVEL MATTER ® Experiences do.

WHAT THEY ARE

MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experiences are conscious travel experiences chosen with great care based on the positive social or environmental impact they have both on their communities, and on those who experience them: our guests.

Identify these experiences across African Travel’s trips by locating the MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience seal.

HOW THEY’RE CHOSEN

There’s no guesswork here. We use a proprietary e-assessment tool, endorsed by industry experts and developed exclusively for us, to measure experiences against a robust set of qualifying criteria in order to be classified as a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience.

Using this set of criteria, we identify exactly how each experience advances at least one UN Global Goal while accounting for the enriching educational component on behalf of the traveler.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

As a traveler you can be assured that by participating in one of these experiences your travel will have a positive impact and you will leave with a greater understanding of sustainable development issues worldwide, and the inspiring local community actions being taken to address them.

Day 6 Maasai Mara

Guests staying at Angama Mara are faced with many choices of how they wish to spend their day, from game drives to incredible walking safaris – as well as the exclusivity and privacy of limited access. GORILLA’S IN THE MIST

Dian Fossey, author of Gorillas in the Mist and the famous mountain gorilla researcher, once remarked, “when you realize the value of all life, you dwell less on what is past and concentrate on the preservation of the future.”

Your experience with the gorillas reinforces the fact that conserving these creatures for future generations is a crucial mission, one that benefits us all.

MAKE TRAVEL MATTER ® Questions

WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE TO MAKE A SMALL DIFFERENCE?

Other then just traveling to Africa, the best advice is to carefully consider what you pack. Most lodges supply items, including a reusable water bottle and provide filtered water. Save your suitcase space and bring a reusable bag for gifts from ethically sourced places (we will guide you to those spots!). Just leave the single-use plastics at home since most African countries have banned them.

WHAT ARE SOME THINGS I SHOULD DEFINITELY AVOID IN AFRICA?

Definitely avoid any purchase of wildlife products such as ivory and do not ride animals that ought not be ridden. Our team and partners take wildlife protection seriously and each experience, lodge and camp must meet our standards outlined in our Animal Welfare Policy.

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH ITINERARY HELPS WILDLIFE AND COMMUNITIES?

That’s simple, all of our itineraries include a donation to wildlife conservation or an investment in future wildlife leaders. We also guide you to experiences that support micro-enterprises and community-based tourism initiatives.

CAN I VISIT A LOCAL SCHOOL OR VOLUNTEER?

Absolutely! We can arrange community or school visits when it is appropriate and not disruptive and look to provide experiences where you can participate alongside community members. We strive for authentic connections.

IS THERE A LIMIT OF THE AMOUNT OF SUPPLIES TO TAKE?

No. While we recommend 5 lbs, travelers can take whatever they are able to. Some travelers have used all their checked luggage to take supplies while others take only a few things. Whatever requested supplies travelers take are greatly appreciated.

Priceless Support

Included in each of our journeys are experts that save time and money selecting the right safari to match your needs. While on safari you will have access to in-country 24/7 guest services to assist with changes.

TRAVEL CHECKLIST

The TreadRight Foundation has created this checklist as a simple way to become a more responsible traveler.

DO YOUR RESEARCH

Choose companies that have a commitment to responsible travel and to minimizing the footprint of their offices and operations.

Request your travel documents be sent to you electronically rather than printed and mailed to reduce paper waste

Consider traveling during shoulder seasons, or to less popular areas

Fly direct; take-off and landing are the most fuel intensive portions of the flight

Consider airlines that are investing in sustainable aviation fuels

BE PREPARED

Pack reusables such as a water bottle or personal water filter and reusable shopping bag

Bring toiletries in reusable bottles

3

TREAD RIGHT WHILE TRAVELING

Refuse single-use plastic and recycle when this cannot be avoided

Shop and eat locally to support the community

Purchase locally made souvenirs and pay a fair price

Avoid any purchase of wildlife products such as ivory

Do not ride animals that ought not be ridden

Research wildlife venues and be sure they adhere to reputable animal welfare guidelines

Honor local customs, immerse yourself in the local culture and listen intentionally to local community members

UPON RETURN 4

Share your experiences with friends and family

Pack light; the heavier the airplane, the more greenhouse gases it emits

Learn local greetings and customs before you go!

Walk, bike, or use public transportation when possible

Take shorter showers (avoid baths)

Turn off all lights, heat/AC, and TV when you leave your room

When in use, keep AC at a moderate temperature

Adhere to hotel linen reuse programs to reduce water and energy consumption

Visit a local farmer’s market and meet the growers of your food, or try a farm-to-table meal

Seek out experiences that are owned by or employ underrepresented communities
