WHERE TO GET TICKETS Tickets are available at venues at the time of screenings and in advance at the box office. Tickets at MovieTowne and the Little Carib Theatre are $25. Screenings at all other venues are free.

This year the ttff presents over 120 feature-length and short films — narrative, documentary and experimental — screening at venues across both islands. The varied and exciting line-up comprises more local films that ever before, as well as films from and about the Caribbean and its diaspora, Latin American countries in the Caribbean Basin, Brazil, India and countries in Africa. There will also be a special focus on the cinema of Canada. Many films will have their world premiere at the ttff/12, and many others are recent, award-winning selections from some of the most prestigious film festivals around the globe. As in previous years, the festival will be hosting several initiatives, aimed at helping the development of the local film industry and fostering an appreciation for independent world cinema in Trinidad and Tobago. These initiatives include workshops, filmmakers’ discussion panels and networking events, and presentations addressing the financing, marketing and distribution of Caribbean films.

VIDEO ON DEMAND is proving to be the current best choice for audiences to watch the programmes and films they want, when they want.

THE TTFF is this year paying tribute to Trinidad-born filmmaker Horace Ové, in recognition of his groundbreaking body of work. Born in 1939, Ové migrated to the United Kingdom in 1960, and in a career spanning over three decades, has made more than 20 films.

The ttff, with our presenting sponsor, Flow, offers subscribers a onemonth window to see selected films from the Festival once the ttff/12 comes to an end. Films range from local shorts and features to regional documentaries and narrative feature films, and 100% of the profits derived goes to the filmmakers. For more details, visit VOD on Channel 1000 or discoverflow.co.

In 1970, Ové directed Reggae, the first independent documentary on Black music in Britain. In 1975 he achieved another first: his debut narrative feature, Pressure, was also the first by a Black-British filmmaker. Along with his film work, Ové has also directed several plays and garnered recognition as a photographer. He has received several major awards, including Commander of the Order of the British Empire. The Festival is pleased to be screening Reggae and Pressure in its tribute to Horace Ové. Please see page 13 for full synopses and screening dates and times.

The ttff, in association with bpTT, honoured a number of these trailblazing pioneers in August. In all 14 pioneers — filmmakers, actors and musicians — were recognised. The ceremony honouring the pioneers in film was one component of a larger initiative commemorating Trinidad and Tobago’s 50th anniversary of Independence.

Entitled Side by Side: Celebrating Independence Through Film, the programme kicked off in July with a filmmaking competition. This was followed by a series of screenings of classic local films and an exhibition covering the Trinidad and Tobago film industry from 1927 to 1999.

HOSAY CEDROS

Director: Richard Fung 2012, Canada / Trinidad + Tobago English and Bhojpuri, with English subtitles. Documentary feature / 80 minutes WORLD PREMIERE

Director: Dion Samsoondar 2012, Trinidad + Tobago English Documentary feature / 73 minutes WORLD PREMIERE

AS A BOY growing up in Trinidad, Richard Fung loved dhalpuri roti. In this epic culinary quest he sets out to discover where this spicy flatbread was born. His journey takes him from the central plains of Trinidad to the Bhojpur region of India, and finally to the snowy streets of Toronto, Canada, where he now lives. Eye-opening and richly enjoyable, this film is a fitting tribute to a majestic culinary invention that has travelled the world.

EVERY YEAR the fishing village of Cedros in south Trinidad observes the Shia Muslim ritual of Muharram, known locally as Hosay. Through a collage of beautiful images, revealing interviews and poetic narration, this film documents the history of Hosay in Cedros. In particular, it tells of the unity among the early Indian labourers who lived on Cedros’s coconut plantations and who transcended religion, caste and gender to come together to commemorate this sacred event.

INWARD HUNGER: The Story Of Eric Williams

LA GAITA

Director: Mariel Brown 2011, Trinidad + Tobago English Documentary feature / 133 minutes

Director: Janine Fung 2012, Trinidad + Tobago English Documentary feature / 105 minutes WORLD PREMIERE

THIS IS A groundbreaking documentary on the life of Dr Eric Williams, the first prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago. The film follows Williams’s career from professor to politician, right up to his disturbing death. Including interviews with family members and former colleagues, Inward Hunger shows Williams’s strengths and weaknesses, and also shows him as a man of great humour and devoted friendships, a man of loneliness and longing — in short, a fellow human being.

FORMED IN 1945, the Lara Brothers are Trinidad and Tobago’s oldest existing parang group. This loving film is a tribute to the band, and tells their story in their own words and music. In particular, the film follows the gregarious, extroverted Willy and his elder brother, the more reserved Tito. Tito’s death (his moving funeral is recorded here) underscores how endangered traditional parang has become, and what an important work La Gaita is.

TONY, THE London-born son of Trinidadian migrants, can’t find a suitable job, in spite of his impressive O-Level qualifications. REGGAE

STONE STREET

Director: Horace Ové 1971, UK / Trinidad + Tobago English Documentary feature / 60 minutes

Director: Elspeth Kydd 2012, UK / Trinidad + Tobago English Documentary feature / 72 minutes WORLD PREMIERE

ON APRIL 26, 1970, over 10,000 black and white British youths attended the first ever reggae concert in the UK. This electrifying film is a record of that historic occasion, which helped to signal the global explosion of reggae’s popularity. Politically charged news and film footage is interspersed with the live performances by, among others, Desmond Dekker, The Pyramids, The Maytals and a pore-raising Millie Small chanting down Babylon with the song “Enoch Powell”.

AT 22 STONE STREET in Port of Spain stands a house, home to the Cherrie family for over 60 years. This absorbing film is an autobiographical portrait of the Cherrie family and its branches in the US, UK and Canada. Mixing home-movie footage, photographs, musical recordings and interviews with a lyrical first-person narration, Stone Street moves beyond a simple record of family life to become a layered exploration of identity, history, race, place and belonging.

THE BASTARD SINGS THE SWEETEST SONG

THE BLACK POWER MIX TAPE, 1967–1976

Director: Christy Garland 2012, Canada English Documentary feature / 71 minutes CARIBBEAN PREMIERE

Director : Göran Olsson 2011, Sweden English and Swedish, with English subtitles Documentary feature / 100 minutes T+T PREMIERE

MUSCLE RAISES fighting cocks and races songbirds in Georgetown, Guyana. His mother, Mary, drinks and recites poetry to escape her traumatic past. Whenever Mary attempts to sneak away, Muscle is forced to confine her to her room. Sensitive and profound, tragic and life-affirming, this is a searching film about family, and a son’s flawed but brave attempts to care for his mother. Listen carefully and you’ll realise even a sad song has its high notes. In association with the High Commission of Canada and RBC Royal Bank

AS THE NAME suggests, The Black Power Mix Tape is not the definitive story of Black Power. It is, however, an incisive look back to a critical period in American history when the struggle for black liberation took a decidedly militant turn. Comprised entirely of archival footage, and narrated by the likes of Erykah Badu and Harry Belafonte, the film includes never-before-seen interviews with Trinidad-born Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Ture), Angela Davis, Eldridge Cleaver and others.

Director: Jean-Cosme Delaloye 2012, USA Spanish, with English subtitles Documentary feature / 96 minutes CARIBBEAN PREMIERE

DESTROYED IN the devastating earthquake of 2010, the cathedral of Port-au-Prince was one of the most beautiful and symbolic edifices in all of Haiti. Amidst its post-apocalyptic-like ruins children play, foreign missionaries pray for lost souls, and men and women roam almost aimlessly. Part historical meditation, part political invective, this is a captivating documentary which uses the reconstruction effort as a metaphor for the rebuilding of the Haitian self.

THIS EMOTIONALLY charged documentary tells the story of three young women living and working in the Chureca, a landfill on the banks of Lake Managua in Nicaragua. Dominga is a glue addict with Aids; Fabiola is being enticed by evangelical Christians to leave her family and Maryuri is at risk of losing the child she is expecting. By My Side follows the women as they seek a way out of the Chureca and towards a better life.

UGANDA HAS recently made global headlines for the persecution of its gay or kuchu community. This extraordinary film documents the brave fight-back against this persecution. When the de facto leader of the gay-rights movement and first openly gay man in his country, David Kato, is brutally murdered, a rallying cry goes up around the world. More than ever Uganda’s gays are emboldened to stand their ground and declare: “We are here”.

Unable to afford her treatment, Darnell joins with a local crime lord in a desperate move to take care of his siblings and save his mother’s life. This is a powerful drama about the lengths to which a young man would go for the ones he loves.

Director: Felipe Guerrero 2012, Colombia Experimental feature / 69 minutes CARIBBEAN PREMIERE

Directors: Sarah Voss, Sander Snoep 2010, The Netherlands Dutch and Papiamentu, with English subtitles Documentary feature / 75 minutes T+T PREMIERE

IN THE BEAUTIFULLY photographed Corta (Cut), agricultural labourers in southwest Colombia harvest a field of sugarcane using cutlasses. The hypnotic tempo and rhythm of their handiwork — a formidable but rapidly disappearing skill — has a meditative effect, as the men sharpen their blades and chop, chop, chop. When they’re finished, enormous trucks drive back and forth and the countryside is set on fire. This is contemplative cinema at its most potent, with undeniable historical undertones.

THE AWFUL LEGACY of colonialism pervades this clinical, unflinching and at times shocking portrait of Curaçao, formerly a territory of the Netherlands. This is a place of apartheid-recalling separation, where wealthy white expatriates live and play in luxury, while locals work as servants or low-level employees for Dutchowned companies. Slavery-era texts narrated over contemporary images of the island provocatively suggest the unstated: the past, in a new form, is very much alive here.

TOMÁS CHOC, a widowed farmer from Guatemala’s highlands, has been searching for his daughter ever since she was kidnapped as a baby during the country’s civil war. When, after 20 years, he receives word that she is alive, he sets out on a journey cross country to meet her. Gently, beautifully observed and subtly ingenious in its evocation of the horrors of the past, this is an immensely moving and emotionally satisfying film.

BERNADETTE, a single mother in Paris, tries to provide her daughters with everything. She is thrilled when her eldest daughter, Elza, is the first in the family to graduate from university. But Elza breaks her mother’s heart by running away to their native Guadeloupe in search of a distant childhood memory: the father she barely remembers. Simmering with intrigue and illicit scandal, Elza is a heady melodrama about a family and its deep, dark secrets.

EVERYDAY SUNSHINE: THE STORY OF FISHBONE

Directors: Lev Anderson, Chris Metzler 2010, USA English Documentary feature / 107 minutes CARIBBEAN PREMIERE

Director: Hélène Lee 2010, France / Jamaica English Documentary feature / 90 minutes CARIBBEAN PREMIERE

BURSTING ONTO THE Los Angeles music scene in the late 1970s, Fishbone were an explosive cocktail of funk, ska and punk. Yet, despite their brilliance and influence on acts like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and No Doubt, the band never broke beyond cult status. Recounting three decades of Fishbone’s ups and downs, Everyday Sunshine is a joyful tribute to both success and failure, and to a band and their commitment to what matters most: the music.

LONG BEFORE Bob Marley sang about the divinity of Haile Selassie and the sacredness of ganja, Leonard Percival “Gong” Howell preached that heady gospel. This documentary tells the story of the man whom some claim as the founding father of Rastafarianism, from his days in Harlem as a Marcus Garvey disciple, to the time he spent leading the self-reliant Pinnacle community in Jamaica’s Maroon country. Music by the Abyssinians and others round out this revealing film.

Director: Ian Padrón 2011, Cuba Spanish, with English subtitles Narrative feature / 95 minutes T+T PREMIERE

Director: Júlia Murat 2011, Brazil Portuguese, with English subtitles Narrative feature / 98 minutes T+T PREMIERE

YOUNG MAYITO, the son of a wealthy jazz musician, imagines all Cubans live as he does, eating chicken every day and playing video games on their Sony PlayStations. When he finds himself lost in a poor neighbourhood one May Day, however, Mayito quickly realises this is far from the truth. A daring dramatisation of the class differences that exist in modern-day Cuba, Habanastation is also the touching story of one boy’s vivid awakening to those differences.

IN THE REMOTE Brazilian village of Jotuomba, life goes on as it has for decades. One day a photographer, Rita, arrives looking for a place to stay. At first wary, the villagers soon warm to her. Yet Rita is puzzled: why are there no young people here? And why are the cemetery gates always locked? The title of this film translates as “Stories that only exist when remembered”; the film itself is an unforgettable, moving gem.

LIKE HIS GRANDFATHER and father before him, Puwal makes his living as a ferryman. When the government announces plans to build a bridge across the river, his livelihood is threatened. Worse, his son seeks to swindle Puwal out of some land he was hoping to pass on to his beloved, orphaned grandson. This is a drama about the clash between tradition and modernity, between one generation and another, beautiful and deep as the river that runs through it.

LITTLE IS KNOWN of the childhood and youth of the great 19thcentury Cuban liberator, José Martí. This robust biopic imagines his early years. The son of a magistrate, the precocious Martí — “Pepe” to family and friends — takes an early interest in justice. Gradually he enters the nascent independence movement and, not yet 18, is arrested for sedition. Respectful, yet not worshipful, this is a portrait of the revolutionary as a young man, and a stirring drama besides.

JOURNEY TO HOPE

JUAN OF THE DEAD

Director: Tania Khalaf 2012, USA English Documentary feature / 98 minutes WORLD PREMIERE

Director: Alejandro Brugués 2011, Cuba / Spain Spanish, with English subtitles Narrative feature / 92 minutes T+T PREMIERE

AT THE HOPE orphanage in Guyana, Kenneth Finlayson and his staff face a formidable challenge. Many of the children have serious behavioural problems, which nothing seems to alleviate. Enter five young therapists from Texas eager to help. At first their methods fail. Over time, however, they build one-on-one relationships with the children, and hope, however fragile, appears. This is an inspiring film about people dedicated to making a difference, and the children whose lives they transform.

JUAN IS A survivor. For decades he has ridden the waves of Cuba’s ups and downs, remaining resilient and refusing to leave the island. So, when a horde of zombies threatens to overrun Havana, he gets creative, and along with a rag-tag crew, starts up a zombie destruction service. Equal parts bloody horror-fest and cheeky political satire, Juan of the Dead is a gory, funny and wildly entertaining Cuban take on the classic zombie film.

More than a reconstruction of harrowing events, this is an ennobling film about the flowering of hope in the midst of despair, and the need for the healing power of forgiveness.

DURING THE 1920s the Mexican government banned all public expressions of religious faith. A group of Christian rebels, the Christeros, took up arms against the state and fought a guerrilla war for their right to worship freely. Using the rural landscape to breathtaking effect, this poetic, contemplative film tells the valiant story of the final commander of the Christeros and his group of men, brave soldiers of Christ making a last stand against the Mexican army.

THEY SAY THAT in Cairu, a town in Salvador, Brazil, exists an extraordinary document: the manuscript of Fradique Mendes. Mendes, a 19th-century Portuguese poet, set down the reflections of his friend, Eca de Queiroz, a plantation owner who had freed his slaves. This compelling film goes in search of Mendes’s manuscript and retraces his journey. Along the way, light is shed on a number of issues, including the living conditions of Brazil’s Afro, indigenous and landless populations.

Director: Vitaly Mansky 2012, Russia / Cuba Spanish, with English subtitles Documentary feature / 99 minutes CARIBBEAN PREMIERE

Director: Kum-Kum Bhavnani 2012, USA English Documentary feature / 67 minutes CARIBBEAN PREMIERE

FIFTY YEARS AFTER the revolution, what is life like in Cuba? This assured, penetrating documentary goes beyond the clichés to paint a portrait of the island not often seen. From the single mother seeking to pay for her daughter’s “coming-out” birthday party to the elderly woman who once dreamed of being a ballerina, Motherland or Death succeeds at getting ordinary Cubans to candidly testify to their hopes, struggles and fears, presenting everyday life as they live it.

CHOCOLATE IS a sweet treat with an often-bitter story — much of the world’s supply is made from cocoa harvested by childslave labour. In Grenada, however, a revolution is taking place. NUTTIN BAFFLIN

ON THE WINGS OF MEN:

The Lynden Oscar Pindling Story

Director: Allison Wilmarth Kovak 2011, Anguilla English Documentary feature / 73 minutes T+T PREMIERE

Director: Calvin Dwight Harris 2011, Bahamas English Documentary feature / 128 minutes T+T PREMIERE

THE TRADITION of building sailboats goes back centuries in Anguilla, and is indelibly linked with this tiny, arid, seaward-looking island’s history of struggle and survival. Today Anguillans celebrate their love of the sea and sailing with enthralling, fiercely competitive sailboat races. Nuttin Bafflin — the term means no bad winds are ahead — is not only the fascinating story of the famed Anguilla sailboat, but also the story of the resilience, creativity and determination of a people.

THE LATE Lynden Pindling is regarded as the father of The Bahamas, and was that country’s first prime minister. This comprehensive documentary is an examination of his life and times. In particular, it looks at a period in the1980s when Pindling stood implicated of being in league with Panamanian leader Manuel Noreiga and Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar, to allow The Bahamas to be used as a trans-shipment point for US-bound cocaine. “OUT OF MANY, one people” is Jamaica’s national motto. And out of eight short films this one feature-length film about life in modernday Jamaica, made by the New Caribbean Cinema filmmakers’ collective, was born. Moving from the majestic Blue Mountains to the gritty ghetto to the stunning north coast, and spinning stories funny, suspenseful, thrilling and poignant, this is a cinematic mosaic as diverse and complex as the island that inspired it.

BRANDON IS a handsome, successful thirty-something New York executive with a secret: he is addicted to sex. Unable to maintain a steady relationship with a woman, he seeks satisfaction in onenight stands, prostitutes and porn. Yet he keeps it all under control — that is until his turbulent, troubled sister, Sissy, blows into town. Beautifully shot but remarkably lacking in prurience — almost clinical, in fact — this is a sophisticated, moving study of the elusive search for intimacy in the big city.

BEFORE DAWN, a carriage pulls up to an inn and a midwife alights. When the woman she is attending dies giving birth, she takes the baby home. Over the course of this same day the infant will become a girl, then an adult, and finally an old woman, and find herself, as the day closes, back at the inn where she was born. This is a strange, wonderful, beautifully hypnotic dream of a film. Tue 25 Sept, 4.00pm + 7.00pm, Medulla Art Gallery Sun 30 Sept, 8.00pm, Little Carib Theatre

NEW YORK, the 1980s. Yannick (the writer Edwidge Danticat), a journalist, is forced to move to her sister Micheline’s home to escape the violence in their native Haiti. Ronald and Vita, a married couple, have also fled the country. And Gerald, a political activist, gets an unwelcomed visit from his father, who was an enforcer with the Duvalier regime. All six must learn to heal from the trauma of the past in this poignant, haunting film.

OFTEN DUBBED “romantic reggae”, lover’s rock is a uniquely black-British sound that developed in the late 1970s and early 80s. Against a backdrop of riots and racial tension, it allowed young people to experience intimacy and healing at parties and clubs. Blending interviews with live concert footage, this winning film celebrates lover’s rock and the culture that nurtured it. Get ready to turn down the lights, turn up the volume, hold on to your partner and start grooving.

AT LONG LAST the story of the Haitian Revolution is given the cinematic treatment in this fittingly two-part epic drama, starring celebrated Haitian actor Jimmy Jean-Louis as Toussaint L’Ouverture. The film tells the story of the man who led the greatest — and only successful — slave revolt in history, from his life as a coachman on the Breda plantation to his final days, imprisoned by Napoleon Bonaparte in a tiny cell in the icy Jura mountains of France.

HAVANA TEENAGERS Raul and Elio, fed up with ekeing out a living serving wealthy foreign tourists, decide to escape Cuba by crossing the “river” to Miami under the cover of darkness. When Raul’s twin sister, Lila, discovers their plan, she insists on joining them aboard their dangerously makeshift raft. Bold, visually stunning, this is a film made with urgency and skill, about young people in desperate circumstances and the lengths to which they will go to survive.

Director: Nisha Pahuja 2012, Canada / India English and Hindi, with English subtitles Documentary feature / 90 minutes CARIBBEAN PREMIERE

EVERY YEAR, a select group of young women undergo rigorous training as part of the controversial Miss India beauty pageant. Meanwhile, at the Durga Vahini camps, thousands of young women train with sticks and rifles to become “tigers” in defense of traditional Hindu values. This thoughtful, eye-opening documentary takes an unprecedented look inside both worlds, brilliantly dramatising the tensions between old and new India, and the struggles of Indian women to determine their own destiny.

IN PREVIOUS adaptations of Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel, Wuthering Heights, the hero, Heathcliff, as per the author’s descriptions, was often portrayed as dark-skinned. This version, however, makes it plain: Heathcliff is Black, a former slave, making the intense relationship between himself and his foster sister, Cathy, even more transgressive. Marry that with ravishing, gut-wrenching imagery and the result is an intensely visceral film, a powerful alembic of one of the most beloved romantic works in literature.
