Equipment FORTAN pyrolysis plants The FORTAN pyrolysis plants are used for the recycling of the was: waste plastics and rubber products, including used tires, medical wastes, wood waste and wood chemistry, soil contaminated by petroleum, oil sludge, electronic wastes, medical waste, etc. The main products of the recycling is liquid pyrolysis product (furnace fuel), carbon black, steel cord (in case of old tires processing) and gases. The most effectively is to operate two and more pyrolysis plants together with using of the abundant gas of the first oven to heat the second one. At each period of time the ovens are in different stages of the process. The shift of the process phase between two ovens is chosen in such a way so as the second oven passes the stage of maximum gassing at the time when the first oven has the greatest need in fuel. Thus there is no need in the additional solid-fuel, the emissions into the atmosphere are significantly reduced and thus there is no need in the gasholder for the temporary storage of the pyrolysis gas.

FORTAN pyrolysis plants

7 DESCRIPTION OF THE PYROLYSIS PROCESS Pyrolysis (from Greek. pyr - fire, heat and lysis - decomposition) is a thermal decomposition of organic compounds without access of air. Raw material (waste) is loaded into a container of heat-resistant material (retort). The retort is placed into the oven. Raw material is heated by heat transfer through the retort walls and thermally decomposed (this process is named pyrolysis) forming a mixture of steam and gas and carbon residue. Steam-gas mixture goes out of the retort through the pipeline, cooled, then comes to the storage tank and farther to the condensers to separate the gases from the splashes of the liquid. The liquid is collected in a storage tank; gas, partially or wholly is used to support the pyrolysis process, is burned or used to heat greenhouses, offices and so on. At the end of the pyrolysis process the retort with carbon is unloaded from the oven and the other retort with raw material is placed into it. FORTAN plant consists of: retort oven, retort, refrigeration complex, condensers, and gas liquid separators. The retort oven is vertical, the oven shaft is lined with heat-resistant concrete and high-temperature thermal insulation on the basis of ceramic fiber. The fire-bars and gas jet to burn the combustible gases are installed in the bottom of the shaft. The intensification of burning and mixing of flue gases are achieved by air blowing. The retort with raw material is placed into the shaft of the oven through its opened top. Retort is a cylindrical container of heat-resistant steel, with a lid. The refrigeration complex is intended for cooling and condensation of gases of liquid pyrolysis products. The gas-steam mixture comes to the refrigeration complex from the retort through the quickly dismountable connection. Condensed and incondensable gases go to the separator through the pipe-line. The separator is a cylindrical container for collecting of the liquid pyrolysis products and partial catching of liquid splashes from the gas stream. The final cleaning of gas from the liquid splashes is made in the gasliquid separator. Combustible gas enters to the gas-jet and / or other users. Retort with raw materials is loaded outside the oven in a horizontal or vertical position. After loading the retort lid must be closed. The retort is downloaded and installed in the oven by means of quickly dismountable Retort of stainless steel connection to a pipeline of the refrigeration system. Retort may be installed in a hot oven or in the cold one (at startup). For the ignition of the oven solid fuel (carbon black) is loaded on the fire-bars through the oven door and burned. The intensification of the burning process is provided with the air blowing under the fire-bars, the intensification of gas mixing and regulation of the temperature in the oven is provided with the air blowing through the air nozzle of a burner. Pyrolysis gas comes to the burner and inflames. With increasing of the gas current the pressurization onto the fire-bars is to be decreased. The end of the pyrolysis process is determined by the reducing of the gas current. To obtain high-quality semicoke the process must be carried to the cessation of gas ("calcination"). At the end of the process it is necessary to stop the air-blowing and the gas current for about 30 minutes to reduce the temperature of the retort and oven lining before the retort unloading. After

FORTAN pyrolysis plants

8 reducing of the temperature the retort must be disconnected off the refrigeration complex pipeline, and unloaded from the oven. The other retort with raw materials can be installed into the oven. Unloaded hot retort is cooled in the air. After cooling they open the retort lid and discharge the charcoal by overturning. Fire-resistant concrete and ceramic fibers provide high durability and longevity of the oven lining (the estimated lifetime of the oven is not less than 10 years in comparison to the ovens made on the basis of ordinary steel). Concrete lining is maintainable. At the end of the service life the worn lining can be replaced. Air blowing allows to burn low-grade fuels and to minimize the time of the oven heating. The removable retort ensures the effective oven operation, installing and unloading the retorts. Carbon cooling in the closed retorts in the air allows to abandon the extinguishing with the water and thus reduces the environmental load. The removable retort can be repaired, the most intensively used part of the retort (bottom) can be changed. The pipelines of steam-gas and refrigeration complex are made in such a way to facilitate the cleaning of possible deposits. On customer’s request the plant can be completed with the automatics control system.

The end products of the pyrolysis processing Old tires -

Liquid fuel oil ≈ 40% Gases ≈ 10% Carbon black ≈ 40% Steel cord ≈ 10%

The products, received after processing of the old tires The liquid fuel oil is flexible opaque inflammable fluid of black colour. The carbon black of the PIROL plants is a carbonaceous powder of black colour. Flammability is similar to wood charcoal. Advantages – equable burning, almost absolute absence of the smoke, absence of slag inclusions, high emission of heat. Owing to constant rotation of the retort, steel cord from the old tires piles to the one ball and owing to constant rolling, steel cord pound the carbon black. During the process the carbon black is poured into the special section inside the equipment. With this way of processing there is no need in additional separation of the elements of steel out of the carbon black. Also the equipment is provided by the additional system of purification of the emissions that makes the plant absolutely environmentally friendly. Plastic wastes -

Liquid fuel oil ≈ 85% Gases ≈ 10% Carbon black ≈ 5%

The products, received after processing of the plastic

The plant of pyrolysis process - PIROL

15 Liquid fuel oil in this case is represented by the flexible opaque inflammable fluid of black colour. The properties of the fuel oil depends on the structure of the raw material. Plastic is usually full of aromatic rings (polystyrene). Liquid fuel oil from the plastic almost don’t contain sulphur. Municipal wastes -

Liquid fuel oil ≈ 10% Gases ≈ 10% Carbon black ≈ 80%

The products, received after processing of the municipal wastes Fuel oil is represented by the opaque inflammable fluid of black colour. The properties of such a fuel oil depends on the structure of the inflammable part of the raw material. For the raw material, full of plastics, the properties of the fuel oil are similar to the properties of the oil, received in the process of the recycling of plastics. For the raw material, which contains generally paper, wood wastes etc. the properties of the fuel oil are similar to the properties of liquid tar. Liquid fuel oil from the processing of municipal wastes contains relatively little of sulphur. The carbon black, after processing of the municipal wastes by the equipment of the pyrolysis process PIROL are composed of the mixture of the carbon residue and mineral inclusions.

The equipment of pyrolysis process PIROL – owing to the constant rotating of the horizontal retort the stirring of the raw material appears. This way of processing abolishes the limitations of the thermal conductivity, typical for the retorts with the motionless layer. Lignin, municipal wastes etc. relates to such raw materials.

After splitting of the pyrolysis oil by the distillation column manufactured by TT GROUP Ltd. the following yield of fractions is observed: - Petrol fraction (gasoline). Volume yield of the fraction is 30…40%. According to the results of that fraction performed by the certified laboratory (Sevastopol laboratory No.1), the research octane number this fraction is 114.2, that allows to use it as a high octane additive to the oil – derived petrols in the ratio up to 30%. Due to the fact that this fraction contains a lot of aromatic hydrocarbons it could be widely used in petrochemistry. - Diesel fraction. Volume yield of the fraction is about 30…40%. According to the results of the analysis of this fraction that performed by the certified laboratory (Sevastopol laboratory No.1) this freezing point of the fraction is -52 оС that allows to use it as an additive to the oilderived diesels or as a light furnace fuel. The percentage of addition of this diesel fraction to the oil derived diesels is up to 30%. Also diesel fraction can be hydro-treated for using it as highquality jet fuel. - Mazut (black fuel oil). Volume yield of the fraction is 30%. Is used as a liquid fuel for furnaces and boilers. Depending on deepness of the extraction of the diesel fraction any viscosity value or flash point can be received. Also distillation column can be used for splitting of petroleum oil, purification of the glycerin, splitting of the alcohol mixtures and other multicomponent mixtures.

18 Distillation of the petroleum oil. Petroleum oil is a multicomponent mixture of the hydrocarbons and heteroatomic compounds, which contains of thousands of components and boils in a wide range of temperatures (30…700оС). It is not possible to split it to individual compounds by the usual methods. Petroleum oil and its products are split by distillation into fractions (distills), every such fraction is simpler mixture and boils in narrow range of temperatures in comparison to raw petroleum oil. Petroleum oil and its fractions are characterized not by the boiling temperature, but by the limits of start and the end of boiling. As a result of atmosphere distillation of the petroleum oils are received the fractions, which boils at temperatures from 30 to 350-360 °С, the mazut is received as remain. From the fractions, which boils below 360 °С, are usually obtained fuels (gasoline, jet fuels and diesel fuel), raw materials for petrochemical synthesis (benzene, ethylbenzene, xylene, ethylene, butadiene), solvents etc. The general fraction are next: • Gasoline fraction, which boils in range from 40 to 200 °С, contains hydrocarbons from С5Н12 to С11Н24. By further distillation of this fraction can be obtained gasoline (Tboil – 40-70 °С), petrol (Tboil – 70-120 °С) – aviation petrol, automobile petrol etc. • Ligroin fraction, collects from 150 to 250 °С, contains hydrocarbons from С8Н18 to С14Н30. Ligroin is used like a fuel for tractors. Most part of ligroin is usually recycled into petrol. • Kerosene fraction contains hydrocarbons from С12Н26 to С18Н38 with boiling temperature from 180 to 300 °С. Kerosene after refining is usually used as fuel for tractors, reactive airplanes and rockets. • Gasoil fraction (Tboil > 275 °С), in other words it is called diesel fuels • The rest after the distillation of petroleum oil – mazut – contains hydrocarbons with big quantity of atoms of carbon (up to many dozens) in one molecule. Mazut can also be separated for fractions by the process of rectification under low pressure, to avoid decomposition. As result straw oil (diesel fuel), lubricating oils (auto-tractor, aviation, industrial etc.), Vaseline (technical Vaseline is used for lubricating of metal goods with the purpose of the avoidance them from corrosion. Purified Vaseline is used as basis for cosmetic facilities and in medicine). From some sorts of petroleum oil paraffin is received (for the production of matches, candles etc.). Goudron remains after distillation of volatile matters from the mazut. Goudron is widely applicated in road building. In addition to recycling of mazut as lubricating oils, it is also used as a liquid fuel in boiler installations. With the usage of the rectification column SARGAS the petroleum oil can be distilled for the standard fractions (kerosene, petroleum, diesel, mazut etc.) or any other number of fractions. Also it is possible to extract fraction of solvents. In basic packaging the rectification column is equivalent to 8 theoretical plates, the reflux number is possible to set during the process over the range of 1/14 to 14. At the same time accuracy of rectification with the reflux number 2 fits or even better of requirements of State Standards for petroleum oil fractions.

Rectifying column SARGAS

19 Rectification of spirit (alcohol) Using the rectifying column the distillation of any kinds of spirit-based mixtures is possible. It can be mixture of water and alcohol or multicomponent mixtures, containing several kinds of alcohol or several kids of alcohol and water. All the elements of plant, which contact with liquid or with fumes, are produced of stainless steel. Accuracy of rectification determines by the quantity of theoretical plates and by the reflux ratio. In basic packaging set the rectification column is equivalent to 8 theoretical plates and the reflux ration given during the process of rectification over the range between 1/14 and 14. At the same time the accuracy of rectification is sufficient for solving of variety of tasks of division. If necessary the accuracy of rectification can be increased by augmentation of quantity of plates. Rectification of glycerin. Using the rectifying column it is possible to receive the distilled glycerin from the crude glycerin by the method of vacuum rectification. All the elements of the plant, which contact with liquid or with fumes, are produced of stainless steel. In addition the plant is equipped with the vacuum block and with the steam heating system (for the boiling tank of the column). The low pressure in column, created by the vacuum block, provides low boiling temperature of the glycerin, what prevents thermal decomposition of the glycerin. The mild process of heating in the boiling tank is provided by the steam heating system for boiling tank by the saturated water steam under pressure. As light distillates the alcohols, water, acrolein and other components are singled out. The main distillate is glycerin. At the end of the procedure the components with high boiling temperature, such as fats, ethers of fatty acids, mineal components remains in the boiling tank of the plant.

Biodiesel plants EXON 1. WHAT IS BIODIESEL FUEL? Biodiesel – is methyl ether, received by the process of chemical reaction from any vegetable oils or animal fats. Chemically biodiesel is the mixture of methyl (or ethyl) ethers of fatty acids. Feedstock (fats) chemically are glyceric ethers of fatty acids. The principle advantage of biodiesel is that it is produced of resources, which are quickly reducing. Biodiesel is exposed to the complete biological disintegration: in soil or in water microorganisms reprocess about 99% of biodiesel in month. This product is so much safe, as even table salt can be recognized as more toxic. Biodiesel is the main breakthrough in sphere of alternative fuels. It is safe, effective and clean. It is simple to produce it and to use it – it is not about any other fuel, traditional or alternative Biodiesel fuel is made through a process called transesterfication. This process involves removing the glycerin from the vegetable oil or fat. During the process byproducts are left behind, including methyl esters and glycerin. Biodiesel is free from such substances as sulfur and aromatics which are found in traditional fuels. Biodiesel is an amazing discovery that can really revolutionize how people think about fuel and make them less dependent upon harmful and costly petroleum based fuels. 2. TECHNOLOGY OF PRODUCTION It is well known that molecules of fats consist of so called triglycerides: compounds of trivalent alcohol glycerin with three fatty acids. During the process of receiving of methyl ether to seven units of vegetable oil or animal fat one mass unit of methanol is added (i.e. keeps ratio 7:1). The glycerin, which is contained in glycerin ether, is replaced by methanol (ethanol). The replacement (re-etherification) is realized by the reaction between fats and alcohol with the formation of methyl ether and precipitation of more solid and insoluble in methyl ether glycerin. 3. ADVANTAGES OF BIODIESEL FUEL  High lubricant characteristics. Mineral diesel fuel during removal sulfur compounds from it loses its lubricant possibilities. In spite of very low content of sulfur in biodiesel, biodiesel is characterized by very high lubricant properties that prolongs productive life of engine. It is due to its chemical structure and containing of oxygen in it. For example, one tractor from Germany, which’d entered to the Guinness Book of World Records, passed about 1.25 millions of kilometers on biodiesel fuel with its origin engine.  Higher cetane value, than in mineral diesel. For mineral diesel – 42-45, for biodiesel (methyl ether) – 51.  Increasing of productive life of engine. During the work of engine on biodiesel the lubrication of its moving parts happens. As the result, as the tests show, amounts the life period of engine and of the fuel-feed pump on average by 60%. It is necessary, that it is no need to modernize the engine.  High ignition temperature. Flammability point of biodiesel exceeds 150oC that makes biodiesel comparatively safe fuel.  Secondary product of the process – glycerin. It is widely used in industrial sector. Purified glycerin is used for the production of cleansers (for example soap). After the process of deep purification it is possible to receive medical glycerin.
