Parker-Huan Park entailed master planning services for a new 5-acre park positioned as a key feature at the intersection of Greensboro Avenue and Jack Warner Parkway in Tuscaloosa. Designed to be a vibrant public space, this approximately $8 million facility features open green space, river-viewing areas, a multi-functional plaza, a performance stage, a pavilion, and dynamic lighting with a pathway that connects to the Tuscaloosa Riverwalk. TTL developed the master plan and final design for the park, converting an under-utilized portion of the city’s riverfront into a welcoming and engaging center for residents and visitors alike. Parker-Haun Park serves as an outdoor extension of the Saban Center, the new, state-of-the-art interactive learning center that will offer science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs, theater and outdoor recreation, and allow for coordinated indoor and outdoor learning for children.
• The TTL team’s role as project leader for the new park included comprehensive management of all subconsultants and architects. A primary challenge arose from the park’s location atop an old landfill, necessitating a delicate balance between not disturbing the landfill content excessively while verifying sufficient fill for foundations. The project design incorporated concrete structures, such as stages and riverside tiered seating, that demanded substantial support due to their weight while incorporating beautification elements.
• Given that the underlying landfill material was insufficient to support the park’s heavy concrete components, TTL’s geotechnical team devised an innovative alternative to the traditional method of installing hundreds of piles. They recommended a ground stabilization approach using layers of geotechnical fabric and stone to create a stable subgrade. Additionally, the project included aesthetic enhancements to the surrounding area, such as the installation of LED lighting throughout the park – now a highlight for the riverfront redevelopment – and under the nearby state highway bridge crossing the Black Warrior River.
• Master planning
• Surveying
• Geotechnical exploration
• Environmental review
• Site design
• Overall construction management

City of Gadsden
Duration: 2024- Ongoing
Scope: TTL is providing master planning services for the revitalization of the Gadsden Sports Complex facility located adjacent to Black Creek.
Plans call for two multipurpose fields for football and soccer, two youth baseball/softball fields, and two high school-sized baseball fields with a concession stand, dugouts, and maintenance building. Designs also feature a large playground with a pavilion and covered seating and an approximately 180,000 SF multi-story recreational building with aquatics, weight room, exercise classrooms, and tournament space for eight basketball courts or 16 volleyball courts.
New parking areas were placed in the center of the site for use by both outdoor and indoor events. Interconnecting landscape and shared use paths surround the entire complex, and the shared use path connects to portions of the existing trail network to extend walkways in and around the development and provide additional connectivity to the overall City.
Scope of Services:
• Master planning
• Civil design
• Geotechnical engineering

The Gadsden Sports Complex revitalization project represents a substantial investment in the City’s recreational infrastructure that is meant to enhance community access to aquatics, wellness activities, and indoor and outdoor athletic facilities while simultaneously positioning the community for sports tourism opportunities. In total, this multi-phase project is meant to add new amenities while repurposing and modernizing an existing sports-based facility to create a premier sports destination.
The project is currently under design and scheduled to begin construction Summer 2025.
