VIRGINIA’S NEW VINTAGE In September of 2012, Early Mountain Vineyards opened its doors with a singular goal: opening hearts to Virginia’s flourishing wine industry. With local tastemakers (and global entrepreneurs) Steve and Jean Case at the helm, the future looks positively rosé. We asked Jean to share the story. 11 | TTRSIR.COM

When did you fall in love with winemaking? Steve and I have been wine enthusiasts for some time. As such, we’ve taken opportunities to visit many of the world’s most celebrated wineries, including those in the more renowned “old world” regions, and some in emerging regions that have captured the interest of wine enthusiasts everywhere. We’ve always been struck by the joy wine can bring to a table. What made you decide to start your own vineyard? We tend to be drawn to markets that are ripe for disruption, but haven’t yet reached a tipping point. But it took us a little while to realize that this may be the case with the wine sector in our own backyard. Why? Many years ago, we had tried Virginia wines and they were fine—but we didn’t fall in love. But in recent years, as the region’s wine sector has been advancing, we decided it was time to take a fresh look. We spent several days in the Charlottesville area, visiting wineries and tasting Virginia wines. We were simply amazed! When the opportunity arose to buy a winery on the Monticello Wine Trail, just north of Charlottesville, in Madison—we jumped on it. Why do you think Virginia has the potential to become the next great winemaking region? Like any great wine region, Virginia is fortunate to have rich land, great soils and a climate that supports quality fruit. We’re a diverse state when you consider that there are vineyards that span from coastal areas to mountain regions, and a range of grape varieties under vine in those regions. I think we’ll benefit from the fact that the same beautiful settings that make for lovely weekends also give the terroir from which beautiful wines can be made.

12 | TTRSIR.COM

What do you think has prevented the area from reaching greatness in the past? As the fifth largest wine-producing region in the country, Virginia has come a long way—but we believe there is potential for so much more. The acclaim Virginia wines have received, from the Decanter Magazine World Wine Awards to the San Francisco International Wine Competition and London International Wine Fair, make it clear that these wines can stand up to the some of the best wines in the world. In addition, the growing recognition of Virginia as a top wine destination (Virginia was named in the top 10 in the world for 2012 by Wine Enthusiast) will help vault the sector. You’re a champion of other Virginia vintners. Who do you think is leading the charge? When we made the decision to invest in the Virginia wine region, we never wanted it to be about just one winery or one wine. We wanted the opportunity to introduce consumers to some of the best wines the state has to offer, so we introduced our “Best of Virginia” offering: a virtual Virginia wine tour under one roof. We are so honored to have the support and partnership of winemakers like Jim Law of Linden, Luca Paschina of Barboursville, renowned sparkling winemaker Claude Thibault, Jennifer and Chris at Breaux; David and Ellen King of King Family, Jon and Mills Wehner from Chatham Estate, and Christine and Nathan Vrooman from Ankida Ridge—with all of these wines offered in our tasting room.

Which innovative or sustainable technologies and production techniques do you employ? Since taking ownership, we have moved away from harsh chemicals, limited our spraying and employed the use of citrus-based and natural products. Our winemakers are experimenting with biodynamic practices in their field preparation, including horsetail, which controls mildew, and horn silica, which can increase photosynthesis and strengthen berries on the vine. We have planted 140 fruit trees that will contribute to biodiversity on the property, help with soil drainage—and also yield fresh produce to be served to our guests. I think it bodes well for the future of Virginia wine if we can adopt the best of what has come before us, and also learn to innovate in ways that make the most sense for this special region. You have said that Early Mountain is a “social enterprise.” How do your profits support the region? All of the profits from Early Mountain Vineyards will go towards strengthening the Virginia wine industry and the sector’s future growth, innovation, adaptation and learning. As a new business don’t expect profits for a few years. But we recently announced a commitment to fund a series of programs, ahead of profit, that will enable collaborative learning environments and help develop promising young talent for the industry. Great things are still to come from this region—we’re so honored to be able to watch it ripen.

“All of the profits from Early Mountain Vineyards will go towards

strengthening the Virginia wine industry and the sector’s future growth,

Colin Hunter, CEO and founder, Alton Lane. Alton Lane is currently in New York, Washington, D.C. and Boston, with plans to open new boutiques in Dallas, Chicago and Los Angeles. AltonLane.com

A More Perfect Union How Alton Lane’s “Modern Bespoke” Menswear is Elevating District Style

After graduating from the University of Virginia, best friends Colin Hunter and Peyton Jenkins found themselves in a classic Wall Street conundrum—two newly minted financial hotshots, without the time or means for the statement-making wardrobe the industry required. But where millions before them had seen a challenge, the pair saw a thrilling opportunity. What if, they wondered, we could find a way to provide European-quality custom suiting, with efficiencies that suit today’s businessman? Enter Alton Lane, a concept the two friends call “Modern Bespoke.” In order to carve out a significant niche in this deeply traditional industry, they knew they’d have to shake things up a bit. “Every industry has its ‘Industrial Revolution’ moment,” says Hunter. “We were looking at an industry that literally hadn’t changed in 100 years. The process was outdated; new technologies had not yet been implemented.” Together, they set out in search of a more perfect union: that elusive blend of quality, economy—and above all, experience. MODEL BUSINESS In order to construct a more affordable custom suit, Hunter decided to deconstruct the entire business. Using his background in corporate strategy and efficiency, he started with an unflinching look at the antiquated process of bespoke menswear. What he found was this: a few simple changes could not only enhance the customer experience and raise the quality of his product, but also produce significant cost savings he could pass on directly to the consumer. We break them down below. FABRIC. Obsessed with quality, Hunter wanted to work only with the best fabric mills in the world. “Humility is one of our core capabilities,” he says. “We looked at the Barney’s fabric sample books and went to fabric conventions, then we simply reached out to the finest mills.” On-demand ordering also keeps their offerings on-trend. A large company like Brioni or Ermenegildo Zegna might order thousands of meters of fabric at a time, a few seasons in advance. By ordering daily, on demand—a scant four meters at a time—Alton Lane always has immediate access to the season’s hottest fabrics.

FIT. London’s Saville Row, the ultimate bespoke destination, is unabashedly old school. A typical custom suit order relies on hand measurements and requires up to five in-person fittings to attain fit Nirvana—a painstaking process that really isn’t a great fit for the modern professional. By contrast, Alton Lane’s “Modern Bespoke” process combines hand measurement with a high-tech 3D body scanner and sample garments, a process Hunter claims often achieves perfection in fewer than two fittings. In fact, a recent order for former President George W. Bush was just right, right out of the box. No alterations required. CONSTRUCTION. As if deconstructing industry best practices wasn’t enough, they deconstructed actual clothing, too. Hunter says he literally took apart several high-end Italian suits, taking notes on every detail, from buttons to shoulder pads to thread—eventually sourcing and importing each element individually. For added efficiency, Alton Lane menswear is constructed abroad, at a handful of export-only factories that produce designer menswear for other blue chip luxury fashion brands. Says Hunter, “We believe that construction does require true talent, but you don’t have to be born in Italy to have it.” EXPERIENCE ABOVE ALL Amusingly enough, Hunter hates shopping—so he was determined to make his customers feel as if their limited leisure time is very well spent. Instead of entering a cavernous street-level boutique and hoping for a free sales associate, the Alton Lane customer is ushered into a snug, luxurious man-cave, replete with leather couches, a plasma-screen TV and a well-stocked bar. “We’re an experience company that happens to sell clothing,” he says. Before launching the business, Hunter studied a wide spectrum of organizations,

from Jet Blue to Ritz-Carlton, that are known for attentive and innovative customer service. “The Virgin Group, in particular, really understands the concept of treating a normal person like a VIP,” he says. At Alton Lane, it’s never about who you are or how much you spend; every customer is showered with the same gracious attention. The company’s private appointment policy only adds to this feeling of intimacy. Customers are served one at a time, with the staff’s full attention focused on delivering not just a custom-tailored suit, but an individualized experience as well. Case in point: one recent afternoon found two dramatically diverse appointments back-to-back: a wide-eyed NYU student shopping for his first interview suit, drinking Coors Light with a football game in the background—and a seasoned sixty-something Wall Street finance executive, sipping single-malt Scotch in comfortable silence. In a business that relies on referrals, it’s imperative that the experience be consistent; for while the average transaction is around $1,000, a single customer might refer $200,000 worth of business, and lifetime expenditures can reach an estimated $800,000. CAPITOL GAINS Hunter has deep roots in the Washington, D.C. area, and is thrilled to be taking part in the district’s ongoing cultural renaissance. “D.C. is definitely a suit city,” he says, but today it’s dominated by big-box stores in a place that is starting to care more and more about self-presentation.” With the D.C. boutique open for just over a year, Hunter believes that Alton Lane is helping to lay the foundation for enduring style in what can be seen as a transient place. “We see ourselves as enablers of design rather than designers,” he says. “It’s about elevating the experience for the individual, which ultimately elevates the whole.” So what exactly are District trendsetters wearing this season? In addition to the essential blues and grays, expect to see speckled tweed blazers, windowpane patterns, tasteful browns and adventurous color-pop shirting. But above all, expect to see impeccable fit, quality and construction; timeless suits that would look as great on Bogart as they do in the boardroom.

JACK DAVIES & KAY KENDALL Helping Create Lifelong Learners

As the founder and former President of AOL, Jack Davies knows a thing or two about championing unconventional ideas. Since retiring in 2000, he has focused his considerable talent and energy on philanthropic work—and today, thanks to his recent marriage to local arts advocate Kay Kendall, he’s half of the ultimate “give-back” power couple: authentic, involved, and committed to serving the communities that need them the most. PASSION + VISION Davies serves on the Board of Directors of the See Forever Foundation, a local non-profit organization that supports the development of the Maya Angelou Charter Schools. Evans Middle and High School were designed specifically to meet the needs of 6th–12th grade “alternative students”— children who are unable to flourish in conventional scholastic environments. “We’ve both been very fortunate, so it’s difficult to be surrounded by such incredible poverty within a 10-mile radius,” Davies said. “Being a parent, I have seen the transformative power of a good education—I believe it’s the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and crime in our area.” Since joining the board in 2000, he has helped to raise more than 90 million dollars and impact the lives of tens of thousands of kids. Despite students’ troubled backgrounds, success stories are common—with more than 75% of graduates attending college. Davies recalls a young woman named Taye, who had virtually dropped out of society and was living with her mother in a shelter. By her senior year at Evans, Taye was pushing the administration to provide her with more challenge, so that she would be a competitive candidate for college. “It was amazing to watch,” says Davies. “Here is a girl who was falling out of the system, and she ended up pushing the system to line up with her aspirations. That’s the most we can hope for.”

CREATIVE SOLUTIONS Kay Kendall serves on the board of Building Bridges Across the River, a non-profit organization that supports the development of THEARC—a $27 million, 110,000 square foot campus dedicated entirely to improving lives in Ward 8, one D.C.’s poorest neighborhoods. A longtime advocate for the arts, Kendall was the chair of the Washington Ballet when her organization was asked to become one a resident partner at THEARC. The Ballet agreed, moving their community outreach operations to the state-of-theart campus, where professional dancers offered hip-hop, African dance and ballet classes to kids who would not otherwise be exposed to middle-class, disposable-income luxuries. Within the first month, the dance classes alone held 800 students—and that was just the beginning. Today, THEARC has a beautiful theater visited by some of the most respected performance groups in the world, as well as a thriving organic garden, cutting-edge computer labs and classes that range from the purely practical (parenting and healthy cooking) to the highly artistic (violin and singing). “This is a neighborhood where 50% of children are living below the poverty line,” says Kendall. “They live with stress that we can’t imagine. Whether or not these kids become artists, being exposed to the discipline of these creative pursuits unlocks new approaches that will serve them all their lives. We’re creating better citizens of the world.”

GEORGETOWN’S SECRET GARDEN

Restoring the endangered splendor of Dumbarton Oaks Park

The directions read like a map to hidden treasure: From the Italian Embassy, take the dirt path just west of the Rock Creek Bridge, meander through the stream-cut valley, cross the second bridge, and turn right just past Lovers’ Lane. And, in many ways, it is exactly that. For this quiet, unassuming path leads to Dumbarton Oaks Park, the D.C. area’s most spectacular—and undiscovered—naturalistic cultural landscape.

18 | TTRSIR.COM

TTR Sotheby’s International Realty is honored to be a corporate partner of the Dumbarton Oaks Park Conservancy—and we encourage you to join us in our efforts to echo the unparalleled generosity of the Bliss family. To make a donation or become a volunteer Weed Warrior, visit http://dopark.org.

A LANDMARK LANDSCAPE Like all hidden treasures, Dumbarton Oaks has a storied past. This particular tale began in 1920, when U.S. diplomat Robert Bliss and his wife Mildred purchased an early 19th-century mansion on the northern end of Georgetown, surrounded by six acres of disheveled gardens. Over the next two decades, the Bliss family would expand the property to more than 50 acres, entrusting its development to Beatrix Farrand: the first professional female landscape architect in the U.S.

RESTORATION + RENAISSANCE The Bliss family generously donated their estate in 1940, bequeathing the mansion and formal gardens to Robert’s alma mater, Harvard University, and giving the “wild garden” below to the National Park Service. Over the ensuing 70+ years, despite the inevitable encroachment of the urban landscape, the 27-acre Dumbarton Oaks Park has remained open to the public under the jurisdiction of Rock Creek Park, but largely undiscovered—an unshakably sylvan jewel in the heart of a bustling city.

Farrand’s chef d’oeuvre is a true landmark in American landscape architecture—a tranquil urban garden that’s somehow both painstakingly designed and beautifully untamed. Formal gardens near the mansion gradually dissolve into manicured woodlands peppered with wildflowers, waterfalls and bubbling brooks.

Unfortunately, due to the funding limitations of the NPS, the Park has also gone largely unmaintained. Farrand’s subtle artistry has been slowly returning to its natural state—a historic landmark quite literally going to seed. Then, in 2011, a promising new player entered the story: The Dumbarton Oaks Park Conservancy. With the sole mission of returning the woodland retreat to its original splendor, this small non-profit organization has launched a multi-year restoration effort that includes the clearing of invasive foliage, meeting the challenges of unchecked storm water run-off, repairing water features, the resurfacing of trails, and improving infrastructure to prevent future landscape degradation. It’s a monumental undertaking, one of equally monumental importance.

The landscape was designed as one seamless whole, a 53-acre garden of immense variety and exquisite beauty. And Dumbarton Oaks Park represents a milestone in our country’s social history, too. Its creation at the hands of a woman shattered the era’s glass ceiling, enabling Farrand to become, in 1899, a co-founder of the American Society of Landscape Architects and the only woman, thus securing her rightful place in the profession’s pantheon.

EIGHT IS ENOUGH

Introducing the nimble new Bentley Continental GT V8 World-class heritage. State-of-the-art engineering. Distinctive design. Improved fuel efficiency. Wait…what? When we heard that the new Bentley Continental GT, long revered for its leonine roar, would be a V8 rather than a V12, we wondered: is the Bentley engineering team firing on all cylinders? Can the maker of what is arguably the world’s most unabashedly decadent automobile really make the case for a smaller, more nimble engine? The answer, surprisingly, is yes. We caught up with Gil Hofheimer, General Manager of EuroMotocars, in his Bethesda showroom. Here’s what our local luxury car expert had to say.

The new V8 GT trades two liters, four cylinders and 67 horses for a 40% increase in fuel economy. In your opinion, is this a fair trade? Absolutely! To be honest, a 67 horsepower differential is not something the majority of customers would ever notice. It’s difficult to tell you’re not driving a V12—it’s still the Bentley driving experience. Unmistakably. Was environmental impact a factor in the decision to produce a V8 model? Yes, it was. We’re using a new technology that reduces fuel intake when you’re in cruise mode—the engine automatically cuts down to four cylinders when you’re not actively accelerating. This modification, in combination with a slight weight reduction and more efficient shifting, has brought the GT from 18 MPG up to 25 MPG.

less extravagant wheels, that kind of thing. But aesthetically and electronically, the V8 is virtually identical to the V12 model.

At just under $200K, the new V8 GT is the lowest-priced vehicle in the Bentley lineup. Where are the cost efficiencies? They’re primarily coming from the smaller engine and the weight reduction, with a few minor materials adjustments—a black grille rather than chrome, slightly

Considering 007’s historic affinity for Aston Martin, that’s quite a claim. That was the past. The new GT—that’s the future.

Is there a particular feature of the new V8 that sets the GT apart from its competition? Definitely the All-Wheel Drive. This is an incredible car that can literally be driven every day, regardless of the climate or season. When you bump AWD up against the Mercedes-Benz AMG series or the Aston-Martin DB9, which are the most comparable competitive models, they just can’t offer that. If the new V8 GT were a celebrity, who would it be? I’d say Daniel Craig. He’s a new kind of Bond; a class act who’s willing to get his hands dirty.

Thomas Franklin Schneider designed the A. S. Gillett Mansion in the late 19th century, c.1890. This Richardsonian Romanesque Revival structure with its turret, rusticated grey stone, post and lintel arches and squat columns exemplified Thomas Franklin Schneider’s ability to harmonize architectural styles. A renovation, completed in 2008, preserved the integrity of the interior while updating the structure with today’s modern conveniences.
