A METHOD TO THE MADNESS A New Phillips Collection Exhibit Sheds New Light on the Master’s Techniques In the annals of art history, Vincent van Gogh is known for his bold, kinetic style—wild swirls of light and color with the power to evoke movement and emotion from even the most static subjects. For decades, scholars have focused on the speed and intensity with which he painted in the field. Now, thanks to a groundbreaking collaboration between The Phillips Collection and the Cleveland Museum of Art, a more deliberate, contemplative van Gogh is about to make his debut…right here in Washington DC. VAN GOGH REPETITIONS, the first local exhibition of the master impressionist’s work in 15 years, happened almost by accident. When the Phillips Collection loaned several van Gogh masterworks to the Cleveland Museum of Art in 2005, two paintings of the same subject—The Road Menders and The Large Plane Trees were seen side by side for the first time. Although the two are nearly identical in size and composition, CMA Senior Conservator Marcia Steele noticed that one was painted quickly on rough fabric, while the other was painstakingly rendered on a prepared canvas, over multiple sessions. Steele brought this astounding new information to the attention of Phillips’ Head of Conservation Elizabeth Steele (no relation) and Chief Curator, Eliza Rathbone—and an exhibition was born. Inspired by the dramatically different techniques employed in the two paintings, the three conservator-curators spent five years investigating van Gogh’s other known “repetitions”: instances in which the artist revisited the same subject, reworking and refining with each iteration. Institutions around the world granted the team unprecedented access to their treasures, which were examined under stereo-binocular microscopes…and ultimately loaned to Rathbone for this once-in-a-lifetime exhibition. REPETITIONS represents the fruits of these five years, giving us new insight into van Gogh’s methods and intentions—along with the opportunity to watch them unfold, step by meticulous step. So, in addition to the 33 masterful paintings and works on paper in the collection, viewers might glimpse a surprising new side of the notoriously enigmatic artist: disciplined, controlled, methodical…and until now, unseen. VAN GOGH REPETITIONS is at the Phillips Collection through January 26, 2013. www.phillipscollection.org

A MORE PERFECT UNION How the Stern Family Turned Their Personal Tragedy into Medical Victory Paul Stern and Patricia, his wife of more than four decades, were entering an amazing time in their lives— successful adult children, a bounty of beautiful grandchildren and years of joyful living on the horizon—when she was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. Despite Pat’s vigilance with annual physicals, the disease remained undetected until it was virtually inoperable. After Patricia’s untimely death in 2008, the Stern family rallied around the cause, dedicating themselves to raising both public awareness and funding for lung cancer research. We caught up with her daughter, Andrea Stern Ferris, President and Chairman of LUNGevity, to learn more about their incredible journey. Q: Can you tell us a little bit about how LUNGevity came about? A: When our mother died in 2008, our family was already deeply involved in philanthropy in the Washington, DC area—but we were focused primarily on the arts. We went looking for a lung cancer non-profit to get involved with, but did not find one that had the focus on early detection research that we were looking for. Consequently, we formed a family foundation, Protect Your Lungs that was focused solely on funding lung cancer research. Then, in 2010, LUNGevity, another non-profit organization with a powerful grassroots component to bring to the table, suggested a merger. I became the President and Chairman of the Board of LUNGevity and my father and two brothers also serve on the Board of Directors. Together, we have become the nation’s largest lung cancer organization: the most robust funder of research, PLUS the most comprehensive education and survivor support network. LUNGevity’s vision is to create a world where no one dies from lung cancer. Q: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the U.S., killing nearly twice as many women as breast cancer and nearly three times as many men as prostate cancer. Yet historically, the funding available for research has been dramatically lower. Why? A: This is a big part of why we decided to get involved. I think it’s easy to blame lack of funding on the stigma of smoking. I think that is only part of the story. I think the bigger issue is the lack of survivors of lung cancer and the lack of knowledge of the facts of about lung cancer. Some of the facts that I found surprising are that 1 in 14 Americans will be diagnosed with lung cancer in their lifetime and that 60 percent of new lung cancer diagnoses are in people who have stopped smoking or have never smoked. It is a disease that can affect any one of us. Q: Early-stage lung cancer can be completely asymptomatic, so it often progresses undetected. How would improvements in early detection impact long-term survival rates? A: Today, roughly 80 percent of lung cancers are not detected at
stage I when it is most treatable. But if you can find the lung cancer at stage one, survival rates improve dramatically. That is why we are so focused on finding it earlier. We’re not there yet, but we hope to be there soon. Q: What is LUNGevity working on now? A: LUNGevity funds three lines of research. The first, which we were just talking about, is early detection—how can you tell, in a non-invasive way, if a person has lung cancer? The holy grail would be a blood or sputum test, and we’re building toward that. The second line is targeted therapeutics, which means developing treatments that target specific mutations driving a lung cancer so that we can minimize the toxicity for the rest of the body while improving efficacy. The third line is looking even farther forward into the future of lung cancer research. With our Career Development Awards, we’re fostering the growth of the brightest young minds—researchers in the first five years of their faculty careers. They apply with a mentorship plan in place, and sit with our Scientific Advisory Board during the term of their award. We hope this will ensure that once we gain momentum, we can maintain it. Q: Speaking of momentum, where is lung cancer research today? A: There is so much positive momentum right now with companies investing in research that is showing great promise. We are looking forward to having new therapies for lung cancer patients in the near future. Every new drug that garners success creates more survivors to continue to advocate for lung cancer research. For our family, it’s about the survivors—about turning those precious months into the years our mom never had. LUNGevity is poised to help to make that happen. HOME, HEARTH + HEART The Making of Salamander Resort & Spa: Sheila Johnson’s Newest Luxury Retreat In theatre and film, the third act is a dramatic climax: that crucial point in the narrative where the actions of the story reach their resolution, leaving the protagonist with a deeper sense of self. This is certainly true for Sheila Johnson, whose self-proclaimed “third act” is building steam with the opening of her new Salamander Resort & Spa—a self-styled five-star resort in her hometown of Middleburg, Virginia. We caught up with the inimitable Ms. Johnson to talk about her most exciting role to date: luxury hotelier. Despite an impressive first act as a concert violinist and music teacher, Sheila Johnson is likely best known for her second, as co-founder of the Black Entertainment Television network with then-husband Robert—and particularly for her work on the groundbreaking African-American youth talk show Teen Summit. But during the BET years, Johnson was also honing her considerable entrepreneurial skills and raising a son and daughter, Brett and Paige. And ultimately, it was her children who inspired the direction of her thrilling third act. 17 | TTRSIR.COM
Cultivating Contentment. Less than an hour from Metro DC, Middleburg is in the heart of Virginia’s most spectacular horse country— and that’s exactly what first brought Johnson to the area. While traveling to horse shows with Paige, a world-class equestrienne, she says, “I was immediately struck by the stunning topography; the rolling hills; the beauty of the stonework. I hoped to live there one day, but thought it would never happen.” Then, in 1996, in the early stages of her painful divorce, she stumbled upon a turn-of-the-century farm for sale in the area—and in her words, “One door closed, and so many others opened.” The original Salamander Farm property was both breathtakingly beautiful and incredibly rustic, with no electricity or sewage treatment facilities. But in her signature gogetter style, Johnson made it her own with a massive, ultra-personalized renovation. In the nearly five years that followed the purchase, she added 8,000 square feet, a 22-stall horse barn, nearby staff housing, a spacious greenhouse and a thriving vegetable and herb garden—all surrounded by meticulous native landscaping and supported by an eco-friendly infrastructure. Inside, she strove to make her new house a

warm, truly welcoming home, contributing her personal touches down to the smallest detail…and unwittingly uncovering a natural knack for the hospitality business. Warm Welcome. Johnson founded Salamander Hospitality in 2005, and Salamander Resort & Spa will be the fifth property in its impressive portfolio—both the company’s crown jewel and the endeavor that is closest to her heart. The company’s mission is to create luxurious, yet intimate spaces that take comfort to a new level. “I’m not shooting for one-time visitors,” Johnson says. “I want my guests to feel that this is their home away from home…a place to for them to create family memories.” In the case of Salamander Resort and Spa, Johnson took this mission quite literally. The five-star equestrian-themed resort is closely inspired by the design of her own home— which, incidentally, is just down the road from the property. “I took my son through the resort when it was near completion,” she says, laughing, “and he said, ‘Mom, this is OUR house!’” Entering through the soaring foyer into the living room, guests feel as if they’re entering a beautiful private home, with everything built on a grand scale. To
the left, a cozy library invites guests to curl up with a good book; to the right, an intimate wine bar and billiards room encourages friendly conversation. But what makes the place special, Johnson insists, what really puts her unique “thumbprint” on it, is her team’s attention to the little things. Distinctive Details. What sets Salamander Resort & Spa apart from its contemporaries? In a word: everything. Beyond its picturesque location, the resort itself is a study in superlatives. Guests can expect elegant accommodations on seasonally themed floors, each strategically positioned for optimal enjoyment of the surrounding landscape. The Autumn floor, for example, is at tree level to allow Middleburg’s vibrant fall foliage to infuse the rooms with color. Many of the rooms are named for Paige’s beloved horses, and the equestrian theme infuses the interiors with dark woods, hand-forged ironwork and even a horseshoe chandelier. Small private groups can dine in the Stallion Barn, a refurbished 150-year old structure that Johnson never tires of capturing on film. And, speaking of photographs—many of the beautiful images throughout the property were created by Johnson herself, both in the Middleburg area and in her travels around the world.

Amenities + Activities. Johnson takes the word hospitality very seriously. “When I visit a truly outstanding resort,” she says, “I create the space to connect with the things that inspire me—and in doing so, discover things about myself.” Salamander Resort & Spa’s guests will have ample opportunities to do just that, with a wide range of pursuits to revitalize mind, body and spirit. Active guests can hike or jog on miles of manicured natural trails through the 340-acre property; enjoy a scenic ride on their own horse or atop one of the resort’s professionally trained mounts; unwind with a yoga or tai chi class at the fitness center; enjoy a game of tennis, or practice on the putting green; take the plunge in the indoor or the infinity pool ; and much more. Though every guest will savor the resort’s flavorful take on Virginia Piedmont cuisine (overseen by Equinox’s Todd Gray) and exhaustive selection of local wines, true gastronomes are in for some real treats— including cooking classes in the cutting-edge teaching kitchen and foraging tours in the resort’s two-acre garden. Salamander’s stateof-the-art spa also promises to be a destination unto itself, offering every imaginable service and amenity—from rejuvenating face and body treatments, to a tranquil meditation labyrinth, to an exclusive Wellness Education Series drawing top speakers from around the world. Community Cornerstone. Despite the obvious attraction the new resort holds for out-of-towners, Johnson is dedicated to ensuring that it also makes a significant contribution to Middleburg and its residents—culturally as well as economically. Home to approximately 700 full-time residents, the town is equal parts gorgeous and off the grid, with limited exposure to the world at large. With this in mind, Johnson is hosting the First Annual Middleburg Film Festival in late October, welcoming filmmakers and industry experts from all over the world. Of her experience on the Sundance Film Festival
board of directors, she says, “I have seen what happens when people watch movies together—it gets people back inside themselves, and brings the global consciousness to the surface. I want to bring that excitement to Middleburg, to bring art and music to the area, to spark ideas and conversation…to cast a wider net.” Johnson’s colorful past will doubtless coalesce into a vibrant future— something for which she is deeply grateful. When asked how Acts I and II will impact Act III of her life, she mused, “When you understand the impact of the arts on one individual, you understand that it’s the foundation for your life.” The hospitality industry, she continues, is no different. “I believe that the resort is a stage. It’s there to bring people comfort, joy and authenticity—a place where they can be the authors of their own lives.” Indomitable Inspiration. It’s exactly this kind of empowerment— taking control of one’s happiness—that led Johnson to embrace the symbol of the salamander for both her home and her hospitality business. The farm’s original owner was Bruce Sundlun, a decorated WWII pilot who was given the code name “Salamander” for a series of heroic rescue missions. Like the humble amphibian, Sundlun literally came through fire, time and time again, to save his wounded comrades. Johnson immediately connected with this symbol of perseverance and fortitude. “When I found the farm,” she says, “I was at one of the lowest points of my life. But getting to that point made me do the self-examination to discover who I am, deep down—and I came through the fire because of that discovery.” Today, she wakes every day not only wanting to live every minute to the fullest, but to inspire others to do the same. And Salamander Resort & Spa is a most inspiring place indeed. To book your own inspiring escape, visit www.salamanderresort.com
