Outdoor Art: Extraordinary Sculpture Parks and Art in Nature, by Silvia Langen, Prestel, $60; High Art: Public Art on the High Line, edited by Cecilia Alemani, Skira, $45.

The High Line may not be the first outdoor sculpture park, but the elevated walkway – which opened in New York in 2009 – transformed the way people engage with art in the open. The High Line is a platform, or as the site’s curator Cecilia Alemani calls it, “a natural pedestal.” It is also a thoroughfare, a framing device for the art and the surrounding glass-fronted condominium buildings, and a construction that quite literally heightens people’s perspective of the city. High Art surveys the exuberant diversity of the High Line projects commissioned so far and considers its impact on its West Chelsea neighbourhood. That book, along with Outdoor Art, which focuses on sculpture parks around the world, consider the conditions of such works and their environments as well as what it means to install and encounter art beyond gallery walls. For artists, there’s the appeal of making site-specific works, like the hallucinatory monuments that

BEIJING Like many photographers, Martin Parr has distributed his work in published form. Parr, the much admired filmmaker and Magnum photographer known for casting a skeptical, often satirical eye on modern life, is also an obsessive photobook collector. And he has played an outsized role in chronicling the history of the medium in all its forms: personal record, propaganda tool, travelogue, work of art and more. The latest area of Parr’s ongoing research is Chinese photobooks, many rare examples of which have been gathered for the Ullens presentation. Co-curated by Parr and the Beijing and Amsterdam-based photographic collective WassinkLundgren, the show includes rare original publications from the imperial period through the Cultural Revolution and beyond and is accompanied by – what else – a collectible book of its own (Aperture). —MEGHAN DAILEY

While there seems to be a new French interest in the city, with Parisbased FIAC joining the contemporary fair lineup next year, PPLA director Florence Bourgeois says, “I know there is a definite French interest, but everyone is conscious that LA is now very important on the art scene. It’s too bad there were no big fairs here until now.” Artistic director Christoph Weisner agrees: “I think LA will be the new bridge to Asia and Mexico, like Miami became the connection between the US and Latin America.” —MICHAEL SLENSKE

month, the London-based production company Exhibition on Screen is releasing The Impressionists – and the Man who Made Them, which brings the show brilliantly to life. “The more you know about Durand-Ruel, the more you’ll appreciate Impressionism,” explains producer and director Phil Grabsky.“We give you the back story in an accessible, coherent way.” Relatives, curators and experts such as Sotheby’s Philip Hook all provide enlightening commentary. Grabsky, who has made similar films for Exhibition on Screen about Rembrandt, Vermeer and Matisse, says that his biggest challenge was “to show the paintings in a way that made you feel like you’re seeing them for the first time.” The narrative is based on Durand-Ruel’s fascinating memoirs and reveals the important but often overlooked role of this great art dealer. “Without him, Impressionism might have disappeared,” says Grabsky. The collection of about 2,000 pieces includes chests, cabinets, wardrobes, tables, beds and kitchen storage. This unique museum gives insight into five centuries of interior decoration displayed in settings that give visitors a glimpse of lifestyle from the past. MMCA (National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art) MMCA Seoul is located in the heart of the city in Samcheong-dong. The museum focuses on introducing global contemporary art to its visitors, offering culturally rewarding programmes and experiences. MMCA seeks to strengthen its collection of relatively overlooked genres such as prints, crafts, photography and new media, while simultaneously maintaining a standard of international excellence through research, discovery, and collecting both international and domestic art.

WHERE TO STAY Park Hyatt Seoul Perfectly situated in the heart of the Gangnam business, shopping and entertainment district, Park Hyatt Seoul’s 24-story glass building showcases stunning city views from every floor. Corsets might sound like old-fashioned undergarments or perhaps a novelty, but let’s remember that they were worn regularly even into the 1950s. And while nowadays we have swapped the steel clasps and tight lacing for Spanx, the goal is the same: to “help” that malleable flesh into more fashionable shapes. Long before the curvaceous corset of the 1800s there was the bodice, or “a pair of bodies” as it was called in the 16th century. At the time, it was in fact the stiff outer garment, worn over layers of linen underclothes, that controlled the lines of the body and gave the desired shape. Various shapewear can be seen in Fashioning the Body: An Intimate History of the Silhouette, an exhibition organised by the Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris and now at the Bard Graduate Center in New York through 26 July. The bodice was originally made up of two triangular pieces of stiffened fabric (hence “a pair”), placed on the front and back and secured at the sides with stitching or often just with pins. The fabric of the bodice was reinforced with vertical seams, forming channels at intervals that were filled with whalebone or dried reeds. Whalebone (actually baleen, the tough, bristly material inside the whale’s mouth) was ideal for this purpose since it could be heated and bowed into a permanent shape. Whalebone also had the advantage of being flexible, though that rather depends on your definition of the word. In most paintings, artists would omit fastenings and unsightly seams so as not to detract from the overall image. Yet there were those who were unfailingly dedicated to realism; in the portraits of Hans Holbein the Younger you can often detect rows of minute

pinheads and dimples where they catch the fabric along the seams. The ideal 16th-century silhouette certainly demanded a tiny, defined waist, but cast from your mind the hourglass figure popularly associated with corsetry. Think instead of the young Englishwoman depicted in this portrait from 1569 (opposite). The Latin inscription tells us the sitter was aged 21 and she is thought to be the Swedish-born Helena Snakenborg, later Marchioness of Northampton, who was one of Queen Elizabeth’s closest aides. Lady Snakenborg wears a red polka-dot damask bodice and has squeezed her torso into the conical form that was the paradigm from the mid-16th to mid-17th centuries. From the painting, we can clearly see that the early bodice had no darts to allow for even the humblest of bosoms; its aim was to squash the bust into its flattest possible form. To achieve that triangular look, the bodice was shorter at the back and extended past the waist and into a point at the front. A sharp-lined gown in Gareth Pugh’s folkloric Spring 2015 collection seems to nod at this convention. Pugh’s gown might not be tight enough for Tudor tastes but he’d certainly get approval from the laundresses for that starching. This geometry elongated the body and made the waist look even smaller. Miss Snakenborg’s gown doubles that effect with its red, black and gold trim appliquéd in diagonal lines. Her ensemble is flawless, but she bears a faintly pained expression – if your ribs were crammed into half their intended space, you might, too. These days, corseted dress shapes are more often associated with traditional bridalwear, but occasionally a designer will reference the formal or historical aspects of the corset. Valentino’s

Spring/Summer 2015 runway show featured numerous flat, sheer bodices with diagonal decorative seams. Some corsets were even layered over embroidered white linen smocks and fine, gauzy partlets in true Tudor style. Although Valentino’s transparent bodices would have been outrageous for even the most fashionconscious lady-in-waiting, some early bodices were more than a little suggestive. Take Queen Anne of Denmark, painted around 1605: With pearls draped over her breasts and pouring into her cleavage, her figure encased in that long, pointed bodice, Anne’s outfit is rather risqué. And lest your eye not follow the symbolism, the rosettes and ribbon girdle looped round her waist are forming an arrow. The message? This lady is a dynasty maker. Those not wishing to bare quite so much flesh could opt for a partlet – a triangle of fine linen draped over the shoulders, its corners tucked into the front and back of the bodice. For an even more modest look, you could wear a high-necked bodice like Diana Cecil, Countess of Oxford. While encasing her up to her neck, Diana’s bodice still forms that narrow point, which is echoed by the long folded sleeves at either side, proving you can be suggestive without showing much flesh. The final touch for the flat-as-a-board look was a busk: a long strip that was pushed down the front of the bodice to help keep it straight. It was also useful for positioning your wheel farthingale, the cylindrical skirt that Anne is sporting. The wheel farthingale was tilted forward, resting on a bum roll at the back (yes, really) and pushed down by the busk-reinforced bodice point at the front. Anne was a huge fan of the wheel farthingale, so much so that she made every woman at court wear them, years after they had gone out of fashion. Busks could be carved with decorative motifs or messages and were often given to ladies as gifts from their lovers. It must have been a pretty saucy thrill, wandering about at court with your lover’s ardent declarations of devotion, wedged so symbolically against your . . . heart.

AT HOME WITH ART

BREATHING ROOM Alan Wanzenberg’s houses and interiors reflect the same sense of composure and confidence that the designer exudes himself.

Since starting his business in 1981, New York architect Alan Wanzenberg has been a go-to resource for A-list clients, Mick Jagger and Richard Gere among them. With the late interior designer Jed Johnson, his longtime companion and business partner (and formerly Andy Warhol’s beau), Wanzenberg landed commissions with major collectors such as Beth Rudin DeWoody and Peter Brant. Wanzenberg’s impressive knowledge of design history, from Arts & Crafts to high modernism, inevitably creeps into conversation. His passion for historical design has also come in handy when acquiring art and objects for clients, including a spectacular Art Deco collection assembled for an Australian collector that sold at Sotheby’s last December. But for all the high-profile projects, many of which are included in his 2013 book Journey: The Life and Times of an American Architect (Pointed Leaf Press), Wanzenberg’s designs – particularly for his own homes – feel refreshingly unpretentious. He was raised on the vernacular architecture of the Midwest, from the rustic 19th-century lakeside cottages he visited as a boy to the Prairie Style homes around Chicago where he grew up. Wanzenberg spoke with Meredith Mendelsohn from his vacation house in Costa Rica, where he has several projects in development. Many of your interiors exude a strong sense of peacefulness and calm without feeling too minimal. Is that something you strive for? Many of our clients, because of what they do, live fairly complicated lives. They want their homes to be places of refuge and quiet, but they also have a lot of visual acuity and are interested in all kinds of things. So early on Jed and I began creating environments that convey an underlying calm but are also well informed and confident in terms of architecture, decorating and art.

AT HOME WITH ART

You have a way of making things look effortless – particularly in your Fire Island beach house and your cabins in upstate New York. There’s a certain modesty, and nothing feels overwrought. Once, after Jed and I received a pretty significant commission, there was an insistence on the part of the owner of the house to do something that was exceptional but also low-key and unpretentious. Jed turned to me and said, “Well, you know, it takes a lot to make something look like nothing.” I always laugh about that because it’s true. I’m wildly overstimulated, so for my own spaces, it’s important that I have a place to decompress. How do you achieve that? Sometimes neutral rooms are the most beloved because they have the most adaptability. In my book I use the analogy of the little black dress. There is a timelessness about something that’s very simple and well-tailored that you can accessorise and add to. People really respond to something that looks effortless.

How does working in the tropics compare with, say, designing in the urban context? There’s a tendency in such places to do a kind of San Diego style – overdone stucco. My house is in wood, and there’s no air conditioning; it makes use of prevailing winds. I just have screens and shutters. Early on I worked in Mustique, in the Caribbean, and it’s similar. You have to keep things simple. People don’t give enough consideration to how you site a house so you don’t need all this air conditioning and mechanical support. You have to spend time in a place and get a sense for it. It’s easy to get your head turned by things you

Do you have any pet peeves about design today? There is a purity in modernism that is currently being interpreted as minimal and reductive. But I think modernism is a movement that has huge variations. Things were much more tactile and lush than some people remember. You look at some of the colours Le Corbusier used, or the materials in Russel Wright’s home in Garrison, New York. It’s very sensuous. Do you have any architectural advice that might surprise people? With new homes – particularly modern ones – I often caution clients to keep a house as small as possible. I feel that in a smaller volume you do more interesting things. Space is more highly considered and just rendered better on a smaller scale. I say to people, “Show me a really fascinating big modern house,” because usually they look like car dealerships. Meredith Mendelsohn writes about design and art for The Wall Street Journal, Architectural Digest and others.

Right now You are at your house in Costa Rica, where you are also working on various projects. Tell me about those. I bought a simple home near the beach around eight years ago and restored it very sympathetically and modestly, and I think that appealed to people here who saw it. You are an architect as well as a creator of interiors and you have also helped clients build collections. With a blank slate before you, where do you begin? I think first and foremost as an architect. I am more interested in things that are fundamentally strong architecturally and then I integrate the decoration into them. But I also have an uncanny ability to imagine myself in a home – and how I would want to live in it.

ART IN MOTION

AN ITALIAN AUTOMOTIVE TRADITION As Tennyson observed, spring is the time when a young man’s fancy “lightly turns to thoughts of love.” But for the more middle-aged types whose passion is directed towards old motor cars, the welcome end of winter marks the blissful beginning of the international concours d’elegance season, which gets underway this month on the romantic shores of Lake Como in Italy. It was here in September 1929 that the farsighted manager of the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este invited the Automobile Club of Como to organise a display of the latest and most interesting cars in the hotel’s beautifully manicured gardens, leaving nature to supply the lake and surrounding Grigna Mountains as a picture-perfect backdrop. Prestigious concours events were already established in Paris and Monte Carlo but, right from the start, there was something special about Villa d’Este’s Concorso d’Eleganza, which was inaugurated with an impressive turnout of more than 80 cars. Despite the Wall Street Crash only a month later, the Concorso survived for a second edition that saw the introduction of something called the Gran Premio Referendum, where the visiting public were invited to vote for their favourite car. The first winner they picked was a Lancia Dilambda with Stabilimenti Farina bodywork, betraying, perhaps, a slight Italian bias to the proceedings.

The Concorso d’Eleganza at the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este is perhaps the most stylish event on the classic-car circuit. Simon de Burton considers its rich history.

The event continued to grow, reaching a high point of more than 100 cars – but the outbreak of the Second World War and the subsequent upheaval signalled its demise. Fast-forward to 1995 when a man called Jean-Marc Droulers, then CEO of Villa d’Este, took the initiative to revive this rich aspect of the hotel’s heritage. This year the Concorso d’Eleganza celebrates its 16th edition in the modern-day format. Droulers remains the show’s honourary chairman, and it is now thoroughly established as one of the key happenings in the high-end classic-car calendar. Being invited to show a car there garners considerable cache, but such is the quality of the entries that prizes are hard-fought – at the 2013 event, for example, Ralph Lauren eclipsed the competition by entering his 1938 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic, one of just four ever built and conservatively valued at $40 million. With its glossy black paint, endless bonnet and signature exposed rivets along its beseamed length that harks back to the magnesium-bodied “Aerolithe” prototype that preceded it, the Bugatti was awarded best in show. Few were surprised when it also triumphed in the Gran Premio Referendum, enabling Lauren to walk off with the coveted Coppa d’Oro Villa d’Este to add to the car’s already bulging trophy cabinet. This year will see around 50 cars spanning the history of the automobile from the 1920s to the 1970s plus a selection of motorcycles in the Concorso e Mostra di Motociclette section as well as speedboats. At the same time RM Sotheby’s will stage an auction of classic cars at the event, the highlights being a 1952 Ferrari 212 Export Barchetta and a 1950 Ferrari 250 GT SWB “Competitizione” Berlinetta. The Concorso is not, however, just about the cars. It is about a sense of occasion – that you can tell just by looking at the sumptuous, cloth-bound catalogue in which entries are depicted through the exquisite paintings of automobile artist Brian James, whose deft touch with brush and gouache evokes the past and defies any photograph. It is also about dressing the part – women in stylish dresses and hats, men in summer seersucker or formal blazers. There is no place for a Formula 1 baseball cap here – elegance in dress and driving is the order of the day on Lake Como.

THE CONCORSO IS NOT JUST ABOUT THE CARS. IT IS ABOUT A SENSE OF OCCASION.

Engineered to withstand extreme depths and coveted by the most dedicated collectors, divers’ watches perform just as well on land as they do at sea.

SOTHEBY’S

If you know even a little about vintage sports Rolexes, it is likely that you would be very happy to own a watch that bears the black on white logo of Comex (Compagnie Maritime d’Expertises), the famous Marseilles-based underwater exploration and engineering company. Those five letters would indicate that the watch was issued to one of the firm’s professional divers, and their presence on the dial of a Rolex can increase its value tenfold. Comex is, in fact, shorthand for an entire chapter in the history of Rolex’s diving watch. As Comex developed technology that enabled deeper, longer dives it noted that the internal pressure inside the Rolexes issued to its divers equalised during extended periods at great depth, meaning that upon decompression, the glass face had a tendency to blow out. The solution Rolex devised in the early 1970s – placing a unidirectional helium escape valve in the case wall at nine o’clock – resulted in the first of their so-called Sea-Dweller watches with a dial marked 660 feet/200 metres. What makes the Comex Rolex so exciting is that, while its origins may have been entirely practical, the powerful spell it casts over collectors is almost entirely emotional. While most owners of Comex Rolexes would probably make fairly poor saturation divers, what this watch offers them is a tangible, wearable link to an evocative period in undersea exploration. Last year I had the pleasure to meet JeanJacques Fiechter, one of the early innvators of the diving watch. An Egyptologist, historian, biographer, thriller writer and underwater archaeologist, Fiechter also ran his family watch company Blancpain between 1950 and 1980.

Blancpain’s Fifty Fathoms model is almost as famous as the Rolex Sea-Dweller, and was born from Fiechter’s friendship with diving legend Jacques Cousteau. Fifty Fathoms-wearer Cousteau had begun his diving career in the French Navy, which in the early 1950s was looking for an underwater watch for its Special Forces, and adopted the Blancpain. A version capable of surviving depths of up to 400 feet was also worn by United States Navy personnel. These heroic, even romantic, origins make the diving watch sector today a crowded one. The depths at which these older models can function were exceeded long ago by modern watches, which count their submersibility in thousands of metres. Most remarkable is the Rolex Deepsea Challenge, the dial of which proclaims a functioning depth of 12,000 metres. This comfortably exceeds the deepest known place on the planet, the Mariana Trench, which is just shy of 11,000 metres under water. Rolex’s current Deepsea Sea-Dweller retains a similar build quality, durability and performance, and it eclipses the older Comexes in every respect, except one. With a British retail price of just over £8,000, today’s model costs a good deal less than a vintage Comex – one rare model offered at Sotheby’s in Geneva this May has an estimate of CHF40,000–60,000. It just proves that precision and performance cannot always match emotion and history. Nick Foulkes is a contributing editor of Vanity Fair and How to Spend It and luxury editor of GQ. Frederick Law Olmsted, the founder of American landscape architecture, sought to channel the “genius of a place” in his projects. He believed every habitat had a spirit of its own and accessing that quality was the most meaningful way to connect with one’s surroundings. At their best, designed landscapes appear spontaneous – an extension of nature’s best expression. On private estates, these elegant statements go beyond initial visual impressions or curb appeal. Gardens are a full sensory experience of colours, scents and textures. They lure you inside and guide you through multiple spaces that, by turns, can be meditative, enchanting and surprising. “Gardens are very experiential and very ethereal,” says Miami-based landscape architect Raymond Jungles, who has worked throughout the Caribbean and Latin America. In reinterpreting the environment, designers consider the site, orientation of the sun, climate and architectural style of the residence. Landscapes can also be used to camouflage flaws. For homes that lack strong aesthetic merit, “landscaping can become the dominant design element that allows residences to recede and fade into the environment,” says Jungles. Gardens are points of personal pride and neighbourhood identity. In cities like Charleston, South Carolina, where estates are known for their flourishing azaleas, oleanders, camellias, crepe myrtles and magnolias, “people spend a good deal of time outside on their porches and in their gardens,” says Daniel Ravenel of Sotheby’s International Realty in Charleston. “It’s part of our way of life.” Even in dense urban settings, rooftop gardens, courtyards and balconies enable residents to feel connected to nature. They soften the city’s hard edges while providing an oasis of calm. Olmsted well recognised the effect. “Gradually and silently the charm comes over us,” he said on a trip to England in 1850. “We know not exactly where or how.” New York-based writer Iyna Bort Caruso has contributed to The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Newsday, among others.

T

he 20th century was witness to some of the most profound changes in the history of art. The classic sculptural

VIVIENNE BECKER

LA DOLCE VITA A new book and an upcoming auction shine a light on the Bulgari brothers, whose name and designs have become synonyomous with Italian style.

(Above) Earrings in platinum with emeralds and diamonds, 2014 (CHF295,000–485,000). (Opposite) A Tubogas bracelet in two-colour gold with Roman imperial bronze coins, circa 1975 from Roma, Passion, Jewels.

Perhaps it is because I know and love their style, but the name Bulgari – according to Richard Burton, the only word of Italian Elizabeth Taylor knew – has a strength and hauteur that for me, immediately evokes Italian glamour. The rigour of Bulgari’s perfectly proportioned, architectural silhouettes, and the severity of their linear compositions, are countered with the voluptuousness of monumental glossy cabochon stones, the sumptuous richness of yellow gold and the exuberance of explosive, often shocking gem colour. The perfect balance of Roman classicism with Italian sensuality, Bulgari style is Italian style. So typically Italian too is its whole design philosophy, which was conceived and nurtured by the close-knit Bulgari family. The dynasty of jewellers was founded in Rome in 1884, by the Greek silversmith Sotirio Bulgari who moved to Italy to make his way in the world. Sotirio’s sons Costantino and Giorgio set the company on the road to design-driven jewellery, influenced by visits to Paris early in the 20th century, but it was Giorgio’s sons, Paolo and Nicola (with the visionary Gianni who left the company in 1985), who were responsible for shaping the distinctive Bulgari identity and brand. Both formidable characters, they have remained famously reticent, retaining the mystique of true 1960s stardom. But now, a new book, Roma, Passion, Jewels (Electa) tells their story through a series of interviews by historian Vincent Meylan, lifting the lid on a jewel-box of family reminiscences that reveal their themes,

inspirations and motivations and, as the book describes, their passions, for Rome, jewels, gems and much else besides. Memories, liberally sprinkled with anecdotes, pile on the glamour, with stories of great collectors and clients, like Barbara Hutton, who left a ruby and diamond Bulgari necklace under the pillow of her hostess, Countess di Frasso, as a thank you for staying in her house in Rome. Such details add riveting social and cultural background, and a very personal, human imprint, to the quintessential Bulgari aesthetic. Now part of contemporary design history, that distinctive style, so revolutionary at the time, burst into being in the 1960s, fuelled by the Italian economic miracle, a reaction to the hardship and deprivation of the Second World War. The book charts the meteoric rise of the business and its success in the 1970s and 1980s: In the early 1970s, with the influx and influence of Middle Eastern wealth, the Bulgaris would travel to the region extensively, with some 40 to 50 boxes of jewellery, doing business in the early hours of the morning, as the days were too hot. In the 1960s and 1970s, in tune with the social and fashion revolution of the day, the Bulgari brothers – Paolo, the gem expert, called the Lord of the Stones, who wanted to be an architect, and Nicola, the aesthete, collector and design conceptualist, who loved archaeology – instigated a new, more casual approach to fine and high jewellery that was effortlessly wearable, more daringly design-driven and stylised but infused with historical and cultural

meaning. It was in the 1960s, for example, that they introduced their celebrated Monete jewels, set with ancient Greek and Roman coins, which Nicola collected. A group of Bulgari jewels in Sotheby’s sale of Magnificent Jewels in Geneva this May includes one of the most striking of all Monete designs: the deep spiralling collar, with four bands of tubogas, the springy coiled “gaspipe” chain, in different coloured golds, set with antique coins. It is a contemporary classic that massively influenced jewellery of the 1970s and 1980s, and still looks so right, and so chic today. Paolo Bulgari, meanwhile, was responsible for introducing the lavish coloured gemstones and the provocative, unexpected combinations and contrasts for which Bulgari is famous. He drew on his Italian heritage, on the Renaissance

richness of deep, dark cabochon gems, to play not only with intense colour, but with light, sheen, translucency and texture. In the book, he recounts how in 1966 he took his father’s place and revelled in the glorious abundance of extraordinary coloured gems available for him to buy, many of them from princely Indian families. He tells too how he can hold a stone in his hand, and immediately knows, without looking at it, whether it has been cut correctly. Even today, every day, he spends time in his office in Rome, with fabulously rare and precious gems spread out on a table before him, arranging them, playing with colour and shape, creating new jewels. His expertise is worldrenowned, so that when a Bulgari jewel appears at auction, set with an important coloured gem, of charisma and character, such as the pair of ear-clips, each set with a cushion-cut emerald, in the Geneva sale at Sotheby’s, the jewel has a special cachet and allure, and a personal stamp of quality. What is most fascinating perhaps is the part that Bulgari played in the legend of La Dolce Vita, the years when Rome was the centre of the world of style, and became known as Hollywood on the Tiber. Nicola explains that the concept of La Dolce Vita was generated by Clare Boothe Luce, the writer, socialite, jewel-lover and US ambassador to Italy in the 1950s. Finding Rome boring, Luce began to lure her intellectual friends to the Eternal City, persuading artists, writers and filmmakers to come visit Rome’s attractions. Bulgari’s jewels, delectable and sensual, epitomised the sweetness of life, and their Via Condotti store was a meeting place for the rich, famous and artistic. All the glamorous stars of Cinecittà. Anita Ekberg, Claudia Cardinale, Gina Lollobrigida, Sophia Loren and of course Elizabeth Taylor were devoted to Bulgari. Looking back, Nicola Bulgari recalls the time he turned down Andy Warhol’s offer of his paintings in exchange for Bulgari jewels. “It was,” he now says, “the worst deal of my life.” But a great story, and one that tells all about the art of Bulgari. Vivienne Becker is a jewellery historian and contributing editor for FT’s How to Spend It. Roma, Passion, Jewels by Vincent Meylan (£30/€40, Electa) will be available in June. Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels will be on view in Geneva from 9–11 May. Auction: 12 May. Enquiries: +41 22 908 4849.

SOTHEBY’S

William Louis-Dreyfus has spent over 50 years amassing a huge, idiosyncratic collection of modern and contemporary art with utter disregard for the marketplace. But suddenly he’s quite interested in the return on his investment. The 82-year-old, French-born remarkably successful businessman – better known to Americans as the father of Julia Louis-Dreyfus of Seinfeld and Veep – insists that he doesn’t need the money for himself. But with his recent decision to sell off the collection incrementally, for the benefit of Harlem Children’s Zone, he is hoping to maximise his donation. While Mr Louis-Dreyfus’s collection does contain some blue-chip names, such as Grosz, Dubuffet, Giacometti and Frankenthaler, a good deal of its artists were obscure when he bought them, and have yet to become fashionable. He’s hoping the world will catch up to his tastes. “In business, he was always a risk-taker, and in collecting he is the same way,” says Julia. “He likes to be right.” During a recent visit to his museum-like private gallery – housed in a former electricalsupply warehouse near his home in Westchester County, New York – Mr Louis-Dreyfus recounted his career as a collector and businessman, as well as his fascinating family background. “My great-grandfather Leopold was the last of eleven children born to a farmer in AlsaceLorraine. In 1851, when he was sixteen, he started selling wheat. The business he started became the major grain trader in the world.” The Louis Dreyfus Group – where William was CEO from 1969 to 2006 – grew into an

international organisation of diversified companies involved in energy, commodities and shipping. Born in Paris in 1932, his childhood was tumultuous. “I first came to New York when I was eight years old. After the fall of France we were able to get out because my mother was American. So I spent the war years in New York, but we moved back to France in 1945.” Enrolled in a lycée in war-ravaged Paris, and speaking less than perfect French, life was challenging. When he could, he skipped school; one of the places he escaped to on those occasions was the Louvre, which was a formative experience for him. “Paintings struck me as something very special,” he recalls. “I remember particularly a picture by Frans Hals of a peasant girl. She was wearing a very loosely fitted blouse. I used to look at her a great deal. I’m not sure my interest in her was purely artistic.” Two years later, William moved back to the US and settled there permanently. After graduating from Duke University and Duke University School of Law, he practiced law in New York City for several years. “But then my father talked me into working for the family business. I succumbed.” During his 45-year tenure at the firm, he travelled back to Europe often and was glad for the opportunity to maintain links to his homeland. “I am very happy to have had the French connection. The French are difficult as well as highly captivating.”

LOUIS-DREYFUS FAMILY COLLECTION/SHAUN GILLEN

His career as a collector began while he was still working as a lawyer. “One year I received a sizable bonus. I think it was $60,000. I wanted to save it. As I didn’t understand the stock market, I thought I would put it in art. “I read somewhere that paintings by Max Ernst were selling for more than pictures by Kandinsky. I thought, that can’t be – Kandinsky is a better artist. So I bought a bunch of Kandinskys. “My ego was such that I thought I could tell what a good painting was. I have the conviction that I know better than most. I know that’s not true! But collecting is sort of a crazy and obsessive thing to do, so I guess I’m slightly crazy and obsessive.” Louis-Dreyfus’s 3,500-piece collection now includes works by some 170 artists. A number of them – such as self-taught artist James Castle – have been acquired in-depth. “When I find somebody I like I tend to go crazy. I probably end up with too much of some, but there you are. I’ve made some mistakes but I don’t regret too much.” Over the years, the collector has become close friends with a number of the artists in his collection, including John Newman and Graham Nickson. “I admire the sector of the world they are in. Being a painter requires a talent that is so mysterious. It’s an exercise of pure instinct.” Louis-Dreyfus has an artistic temperament himself. About fifteen years ago, he began writing poetry; his work has been published in the Hudson Review, The New Criterion and Southwestern Review. “It’s been very satisfying. If I get a few more acceptable poems written maybe I will publish a book. But that’s not why I do it. A writer, like a painter, hopes his work is seen, but the act doesn’t depend upon that.” A few years ago, as he was contemplating the future, he saw a television interview with Geoffrey Canada, founder of Harlem Children’s Zone, which riveted him. “When I learned more about what Geoffrey was doing through the Harlem Children’s Zone – his approach of helping children from birth to college –

“COLLECTING IS SORT OF A CRAZY AND OBSESSIVE THING TO DO, SO I GUESS I’M SLIGHTLY CRAZY AND OBSESSIVE.”

I thought that made so much sense. He is a marvelous, clear-thinking person and the job he has done is supreme. So I went to meet him and I told him I wanted to give my collection to fund his work.” And this is where Louis-Dreyfus began thinking about the art marketplace. He plans to sell off pieces of the collection individually, or in groups, over the coming years, based on their market values. “Some pieces have reached close to what I think their top value will be, so we will start selling them soon. But I have to wait for most of the paintings to gain in value.” Though Helen Frankenthaler is one of the bigger names in his collection, he does not plan to part with her work soon. “She’s the best-kept secret in America. Her work is undervalued.” No one is happier about the donation than Louis-Dreyfus’s three children. “I’m thrilled to pieces about it. It’s a perfect move – one that addresses the philanthropic desires he’s been

focused on his whole life,” says Julia, whose two sisters are trained social workers. “And what would I do with 3,000 paintings?” she cracks. In the interest of raising the value of his collection, her traditionally press-shy father has recently begun cooperating with efforts to raise its profile – notably with a documentary, Generosity of Eye, which was narrated by Julia and directed by her husband Brad Hall. (It can be viewed on the website of the Louis-Dreyfus Family Collection, ld-collection.org). Though he is 82, Mr Louis-Dreyfus anticipates much effort ahead. “I’d love for some far-seeing collector to come along and buy the whole thing tomorrow so we can give it all to Harlem Children’s Zone, but I don’t see that happening. We have a long road before us.” James Reginato is writer-at-large of Vanity Fair.

rom the very beginning, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles has always put artists at its centre. Sam Francis and Robert Irwin were among its founders in 1979, along with a passionate group of collectors and curators who wanted to create a place where contemporary art and artists would thrive. The museum’s first space – the Temporary Contemporary, Frank Gehry’s unpretentious and utterly artist-friendly conversion of a 1940s warehouse – opened in 1983. A pop-up museum before the term even existed, the Temporary Contemporary (now the Geffen Contemporary) instantly became a vibrant hub for cutting-edge presentations of art in all genres, often at the same time. By late 1986, when its celebrated Arata Isozaki-designed building opened on Grand Avenue downtown, MOCA had already earned a reputation for experimentation, risk and freedom. Its exhibitions gave audiences direct encounters with the often challenging, always surprising work of Mike Kelley, Liz Larner, Paul McCarthy, Raymond Pettibon and Lari Pittman. And some artists who took centre stage in the galleries, including Catherine Opie, Barbara Kruger and John Baldessari (who had his first major retrospective there), became members of the museum’s board. Artists were not just involved with the museum. They were the museum, and that, according to director Philippe Vergne, has not changed. “We started with artists,” says Vergne. “And we never lost that. I think it runs through everything we do.” That message is crucial now more than ever. After weathering a recessionary shortfall and the 2013 departure of director Jeffrey Deitch, the board is eager to move forward. “MOCA is not a museum of the past,” says Vice Chairman Maurice Marciano. “MOCA is a museum of the future.” Vergne, who started his job in January 2014, has been regarded as a stabilising force. Most of the artists who decamped from the board have since returned, and the focus now is on building the endowment. To that end, 35 artists have donated works that will be sold at Sotheby’s New York this May. All of the proceeds from the sale will

benefit the endowment and be dedicated to exhibitions, education and acquisitions. “The voice of the artists will be in this endowment,” says Vergne, who explains that all the artists have had projects with MOCA in the past: Mark Bradford, Sam Durant, Mark Grotjahn, Jeff Koons, Kruger and Lawrence Weiner among them. “It’s extremely moving to see how many artists have agreed to participate and make a major contribution,” says Vergne. “We have so many works in the collection that were given by artists, and when an artist gives a work it’s a vote of confidence. For me that’s really where MOCA starts.” —MEGHAN DAILEY Artists for MOCA will be on view at Sotheby’s New York from 8–13 May. Auction 12–13 May. Enquiries +1 212 606 7254.

(Clockwise from top left) Samuel Goldwyn Productions opened for business in 1924 (Goldwyn never worked for MGM); The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was among many Goldwyn films starring Danny Kaye; Florenz Ziegfeld and Goldwyn on the set of Whoopee!; Goldwyn at the 1946 Academy Awards, where he won Best Motion Picture for The Best Years of Our Lives, with Anne Baxter, Olivia de Havilland and Harold Russell; Goldwyn introduced Laurence Olivier to America with Wuthering Heights.

I

n the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, the legendary producer Samuel Goldwyn achieved the greatest success of his fabled career – which had begun with the making of Hollywood’s first feature-length film (a 1914 western called The Squaw Man, directed by the novice Cecil B. DeMille) and which included such classics as Wuthering Heights and The Pride of the Yankees. Except for his failure to master the English language (which resulted in such famous “Goldwynisms” as “Include me out!”), Goldwyn had long since shed all traces of his impoverished beginnings a world away from Hollywood. Schmuel Gelbfisz, a Hasidic Jew born into poverty and squalor in Warsaw in 1879, had walked across Europe as a teenager, sailed to America, reinvented himself as a complete gentleman dressed in Savile Row suits and founded a motion-picture dynasty. His 68th production, The Best Years of Our Lives – inspired by a TIME magazine article about soldiers coming home from the Second World War and trying to adjust to civilian life – became a blockbuster hit, the highest-grossing film of 1946 and his greatest commercial success ever.

Nominated for eight Academy Awards, Best Years won seven of them, including Best Picture. Crowning that year’s Oscar ceremony, Goldwyn received the Irving G. Thalberg Award for his body of work. After the night’s celebrations, the chauffeur drove Goldwyn and his wife, Frances, home to their Beverly Hills mansion. She waited upstairs for Sam to come to bed; and when he did not, she searched the house. Frances found him sitting in the living room, alone in the dark – his Oscar in one hand and his Thalberg in the other – sobbing. Goldwyn considered the trophies a curse. He had long preached to his son, Samuel, Jr., that the higher you climbed, the harder you would fall. While Goldwyn had a few promising movies in the works, he immediately felt Best Years marked the end of his own best years. With labour troubles arising in Hollywood, McCarthyism strangling the studios (a movement Goldwyn resisted) and the threat of television killing attendance at movie theatres, Goldwyn sank into a serious depression. He received help from a remarkable therapist named Hilde Berl, a diminutive Austrian trained in graphology. She periodically appeared in New York and Los Angeles, where

some wrote her off as a charlatan; but Berl had counselled the Goldwyns previously, helping them resolve deep family issues, including discord with their son. She returned in late 1947 to work her magic. During a session, Goldwyn described his state of mind – how he was living in greater luxury than he had ever dreamed possible, with the utmost respect of his industry. And yet, he confessed, he was deriving no pleasure from any of it. Hilde Berl urged him to collect art. She explained that for all the ugliness in his background, Goldwyn had a genuine eye for beauty. Just as a perfectly filmed scene gave him pleasure, so too could a single picture. If nothing else, she thought paintings could help him appreciate how much bleakness he had overcome. Berl nudged him toward the French Impressionists. Goldwyn had recently become friendly with financier and future politician-diplomat Averell Harriman, whose wife Marie had operated one of the finest art galleries in New York. Although Sam balked at the prices, she advised him as he made his first acquisition in 1948 – a Matisse still life called Anémones et grenades (1946), an uncluttered arrangement with a soothing palette that cost $13,500; a Chagall gouache called The Lovers followed. For months, he would hurry home after work and sit in the living room alone, now simply to gaze.

The works of Matisse and Picasso were becoming especially popular in Hollywood mansions – the famous names worth buying, if only as good investments. Their price tags were enough to terrify Frances Goldwyn; but she also came to value their beauty. Over the next two decades, artworks became the Goldwyns’ favourite gifts to each other – including a Degas pastel called Après le bain (circa 1883), two still lifes by Braque, a Bonnard and an oil painting in which he took special pride, the picture he called “my Toujours Lautrec.” The growing collection commanded attention at 1200 Laurel Lane, the Georgian-style house the Goldwyns built on two of the choicest acres in Beverly Hills. Here they entertained every famous name in Hollywood, sometimes four nights a week, usually at dinners for twelve. As Katharine Hepburn once commented, “You always knew where your career stood by where you sat at the Goldwyn table.” Sam Goldwyn emerged from his funk and spent the 1950s producing such extravagant movie musicals as Hans Christian Andersen, Guys and Dolls and Porgy and Bess. He became Hollywood’s grey eminence, and even received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Richard Nixon in 1971. Goldwyn died in 1974 at the age of 94; and upon Frances’s death two years later, the bulk of his $20 million estate was left

to charity. But Sam, Jr. inherited the house and all its art and, most important, ownership of the 80 films his father had produced. “Not half a dozen men have ever been able to keep the whole equation of pictures in their heads,” F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote in his novel The Last Tycoon. Samuel Goldwyn was one of them. Samuel Goldwyn, Jr. was another. While his father would always remain the most colourful of Hollywood’s founders, the son became just as totemic of the period that followed, one in which the big studios became part of conglomerate portfolios and filmmakers found greater freedom of expression outside the studio walls, getting their films financed independently. Sam Goldwyn, Jr. became one of their greatest champions, with his unparalleled understanding of the entire industry. He established the Samuel Goldwyn Company in 1979, and it would adjust to the vicissitudes of the film business over the next 35 years and prosper. He produced two dozen movies, among them Mystic Pizza, which cast Julia Roberts in her first significant role in a feature; Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World; and, most recently, a remake of his father’s

Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Sam, Jr.’s greatest strength proved to be in film distribution. He championed young, visionary directors and such films as Nicholas Hytner’s The Madness of King George, Ang Lee’s Wedding Banquet, Noah Baumbach’s The Squid and the Whale, David Lynch’s Wild at Heart and Kenneth Branagh’s Henry V. Upon his mother’s death in 1976, Sam, Jr. moved into his boyhood house. 1200 Laurel Lane received overdue redecoration; and on the brightened walls, Sam, Jr. made the home his own by adding some unexpected pictures to the Goldwyn collection – a half dozen works by David Hockney in various mediums, oil paintings by Milton Avery, a Botero brush, wash and pencil sketch, Kitaj charcoals and several works by Diego Rivera. The art that had hung at 1200 Laurel Lane no doubt inspired his particular interest in movies about painters. Over the years, he distributed Milos Forman’s production of Goya’s Ghosts, starring Javier Bardem, Mary Harron’s I Shot Andy Warhol and Renoir, France’s 2013 Oscar entry about the great Impressionist painter, which became an unexpected box-office success. One of Sam, Jr.’s personal favourites happened to be filmed by Renoir’s grandson Claude – Le mystère Picasso, an exhilarating documentary from 1956 that showed the master himself at work. Sam, Jr. rereleased it 30 years later so that new generations of American audiences could appreciate it. Although styles and tastes change over the decades, the timeless Picasso provided a powerful bond between father and son. The greatest painting Sam, Sr. and Frances had ever acquired was the artist’s striking portrait of Françoise Gilot, Femme au chignon dans un fauteuil (1948). Sam, Jr. chose to hang the picture on the wall opposite the front door, to greet everyone who entered the house. It was a constant reminder of art’s transformative potential – to change the lives not only of those who resided there but of anybody who ever had the good fortune to step inside 1200 Laurel Lane. f you ask most wine collectors to name the world’s single most important and sought-after wine estate, many of them – even tried-and-true Bordeaux lovers – would likely cite the great Burgundy producer Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. With roots going back to the 13th century in the Vosne-Romanée district of Burgundy, the single vineyard that gives the domaine its name was once the prized possession of King Louis XV. For many collectors, opening one of the massively powerful but also elegant wines produced there year in and year out is a kind of communion. “In great vintages, lots of people make great wines, but even in the perceived lesser vintages, they still make great wines,” says Jamie Ritchie, CEO and President of Sotheby’s Wine, Americas and Asia. “They are super-consistent and reliable.” And the amounts that DRC produces are tiny; the “richness balanced with elegance and finesse” that Ritchie singles out in the wines is simply scarcer in the marketplace – hence their ever-growing allure at auction. The producer’s gilded reputation is such that you might expect an imperious chamber of French tastemakers to be running it. But the person in charge and co-owner, Aubert de Villaine, 75, comes across more like someone tending an elaborate vegetable garden: proud of his work and deeply passionate about it, but relatively unassuming. De Villaine rarely speaks to journalists – he doesn’t have to. But when he sits down with me on his yearly visit to New York, the only indication of his special status is that he is speaking in a conference room at the French Consulate. He is allowed occasional overnight stays in the consulate’s Beaux-Arts building, a rare privilege that reflects the admiration given to DRC by a country that reveres grand tradition and excellence. If you tell de Villaine that you are not fortunate enough to taste DRC very often, he says with a laugh, “I don’t either,” given that the value of a single bottle can be thousands of dollars. But he quickly adds, “I taste in barrel often,” meaning that he closely monitors the wine’s progress as it is made. De Villaine, who started working at the domaine in 1974, is descended from a family

that has been involved with the winery for decades. He can reminisce about the famed 1945 vintage, now legendary but at the time, when he was a child, it was simply considered a difficult year to make wine in the region. By 1991, a complex management struggle was resolved and, de Villaine says, “I began running it as I wanted.” From the beginning, his tenure involved a meticulous stewardship of the famed vineyards like Romanée-Conti, Richebourg and La Tâche, capable of producing what are agreed to be among the world’s best pinot noir-based wines. And don’t forget the rich Chardonnay from DRC’s portion of the Le Montrachet vineyard. “Things have changed a lot,” de Villaine says, reflecting on the evolution of his home region. “First, and maybe most important, the 1970s mentality of Burgundy was to emphasise productivity. The idea was to protect the crops, buy chemicals and make as much wine as possible because the market was good.” But, he explains, DRC resisted this: low-yielding vines are part of what can make wines long-lived and desirable, since the nutrients get concentrated into fewer grapes. While de Villaine is fortunate enough to have come into some of the world’s best vineyards because of his family heritage, he emphasises that terroir, also known as climat, or the unique natural characteristics of a particular vineyard site, isn’t everything. “That’s always a big discussion: nature, culture, terroir,” he says. “The climat exists, but man has to have the philosophy that makes him able to maximise the potential. It could be a vineyard like any other if it’s not properly handled. Climat is a marriage between nature and man’s decisions.” He has thought carefully about how to pass along the estate in good hands, and has already transferred shares to the next generation. His nephew, Betrand de Villaine, will take over management. But Aubert de Villaine has set a lasting tone. “The challenge of the domaine today is to keep the right spirit,” he says. “And it has to be the whole team, from the bottom to the top.” Ted Loos is the Wine Editor of Travel + Leisure.

DOMAINE DE LA ROMANÈECONTI AT SOTHEBY’S In February, Sotheby’s announced its top-ten list detailing the bestselling wine producers for the year 2014. The results of this second annual report were based on both auction and retail sales and as in 2013, the top producer was Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. The total sales figure, $8.9 million, represents a 24 per cent increase from the previous year. The highest auction price of the year was also achieved by DRC. “Once again DRC triumphed in the Sotheby’s ranking boosted by the $1.6 million Romanée-Conti superlot, which set a new record for wine at auction when it sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong in October 2014,” says Jamie Ritchie, CEO and President of Sotheby’s Wine, Americas and Asia. This month’s sale of the Don Stott Cellar – one of the finest private collections ever offered at Sotheby’s – includes 102 lots from Romanée-Conti. here are many moments in the year when the world’s eyes turn to the floating city of Venice. In February its opulent palaces are filled with masked carnival-goers, while each September sees an influx of Hollywood glamour for the Mostra film festival. Inherently cinematic, La Serenissima is a favoured backdrop for dramatic events of all kinds, from a visit by the Pope to the filming of a James Bond movie or the hysteriainducing wedding of George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin. As someone who has lived here for more than 20 years, however, I tell my friends that nothing compares to the moment every two years when the Venice Biennale opens its doors to the international art world. Suddenly the city of Canaletto and Titian, Tintoretto and Tiepolo, Bellini and Guardi, finds itself hosting the new, surprising and even controversial creations of today’s artists. While the Biennale is on between May and November, the traveller has the choice to seek out an exquisite 400-year-old Veronese fresco hidden away in the artist’s parish church of San Sebastiano, or wander into a sumptuous palazzo and see a cutting-edge video or sculptural installation. The dynamic individual who curated the 56th International Art Exhibition is Nigerian-born Okwui Enwezor,

who has chosen the theme of All the World’s Futures to inspire the participating 136 artists from 53 countries. Explaining the appointment, Biennale president Paolo Baratta says Enwezor was selected because of his direct relationship to globalisation, and stresses that “his personal experience is a decisive starting point for the geographic range of his analysis, for the temporal depth of recent developments in the art world and for the variegated richness of the present.” Enwezor also has his eye on the past, as he explains that this edition “will use the unique 120-year history of the Biennale itself as one of many intersecting filters through which artists and the public can reflect on both the current state of things and the appearance of things” (see page 84). For over 100 years, the Biennale has occupied the Giardini, a lush, secluded park at the end of Venice, just opposite the Lido, where participating nations have exhibitions in their own pavilions. When the privileged movers and shakers of the art world, journalists, assorted pop stars and movie actors arrive in Venice with their priceless invitations for the exclusive preview days from 6–8 May, they will discover that parts of All the World’s Futures are on view in scores of different venues across town – palaces and mansions, monasteries and convents – that are often closed to the public. Roderick Conway Morris, art critic for the International New York Times In 2013, over 24,000 accredited journalists and invited guests surged through the Giardini and Arsenale during the Biennale preview days. So, if you have preview tickets, go early to avoid the crowds. The greatest discoveries are often outside of the main sites. Two major sculptors will be staging collateral shows this year: Ursula von Rydinsgvard, at the Giardino della Marinessa on the Riva Sette Martiri; and Emily Young in the blessedly tranquil, out-of-the-way Chiostro di Madonna dell’Orto in Cannaregio.

Michel Paciello, specialist of antique Venetian glass beads My best day in Venice would begin with breakfast on the terrace of the Danieli, then a trip to San Giorgio island to the avant-garde Stanze del Vetro exhibition space. Next, the Giudecca for photo exhibitions at the Casa dei Tre Oci, followed by a lunch of razor clams and black squid risotto at Al Storico da Crea.

Enzo Di Martino, art critic, author of The History of the Venice Biennale Hidden inside the San Giovanni and Paolo hospital, the magnificent Sala San Marco houses the Museum of the History of Medicine, with an exceptional collection of paintings and prints, antique medical books and some terrifying surgical instruments. Meanwhile, just a hundred metres from the Piazza San Marco lies Ca’Giustinian, palatial headquarters of the Biennale, whose wonderful café, L’Ombra del Leone, offers a breathtaking terrace right on the Grand Canal.

Liesl Odenweller, soprano opera singer, co-founder of Venice Music Project One of my favourite spots is the church and cloister of San Francesco della Vigna, containing everything from the most beautiful Madonna by Bellini to an incredible collection of antique books, many of which were printed in Venice in the 16th century. And later, experience an evening of ombre and cicchetti, wine and Venetian tapas, with the locals at unmissable bacaro Vini Schiavi, just behind the Zattere.

Leslie Genninger, designer of Murano glass May is the perfect weather here. Enjoy the international bustle of the city at lunch or dinner outdoors in the famous Campos and Campiellos around town: my favourites are A Beccafico in Campo San Stefano, and Acqua Pazza in Campo Sant’ Angelo, whose antipasti cannot be beat. On the glassmakers’ island of Murano, reserve at Lele’s Busa alla Torre, romantically located in a beautiful Campiello.

Francesca Bortolotto Possati, owner of the luxury Bauer Hotel You are assured of a magical moment from the bell tower of San Giorgio Maggiore, as the surrounding churches ring their bells in the clear blue sky with the shining sun. On Murano, visit the Seguso glass factory, where they have been making intricate works of art since 1897. Across the lagoon, go to L’Estrosa on Burano and pick up handmade linens with delicate lace and crochet.

INSIDE THE BIENNALE|

I

n 1895, when the first Biennale was inaugurated, imagine what the world would have looked like compared to today. Then in 1907, the first National Pavilion was built, by Belgium. Just think about it, in that year, the King of Belgium was dispossessed of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, after the local population had been reduced from something like 20 million to just 10 million. It was the first great scandal of the 20th century. For me this is a Landscape of Residue, a theme that will run through the 2015 Biennale. Don’t get me wrong. I am not interested in presenting an historical exhibition, but rather to step back into the past and then project forward. I have to say that I was very inspired by the Venice Biennale of 1974, which was an incredible statement of solidarity with the people of Chile after the democratic government of Salvador Allende was overturned by General Pinochet. With that in mind, I do not want this year’s Biennale to be like a series of museum exhibitions, but rather a dialogue, an interaction, an impetus for people to reflect on how the world is and how it might be. A new arena designed by GhanianBritish architect David Adjaye will become a sort of stage for artists, filmmakers, choreographers, performers, composers,

writers and poets, whose contributions will act like an orchestra inciting the public to think and reflect on contemporary global reality. It was very important to me that this Biennale present as much original work as possible, and the reaction from artists across the globe has been amazing. I want to stress that we are not commissioning these new works, but rather giving the impetus to artists to create expressions of the theme of All the World’s Futures. And these important new works, which really are gifts by the artists to us, will live on long after the 2015 Biennale closes its doors. —AS TOLD TO JOHN BRUNTON

The US Pavilion at the 2013 Biennale.

THE PERFECT WAY TO DISCOVER AUTHENTIC VENICE IS TO WANDER AWAY FROM THE CROWDS.

But prior to exploring those, I recommend starting with the historic national pavilions in the Giardini. For many years the Biennale was centred around these buildings where France, Britain, the US, Brazil and 25 other nations organise their own presentations. From there, you can walk over to the Arsenale, the once off-limits military zone where hundreds of eclectic installations are installed in the former warehouses, workshops and dockyards. Then it is time to concentrate on the 44 collateral events of All the World’s Futures. Ones not to miss include the groundbreaking My East is Your West, an unprecedented collaboration between India and Pakistan whose artists Shilpa Gupta and Rashid Rana will exhibit side by side in the 17thcentury Palazzo Benzon (where Lord Byron once stayed). Scottish painter Peter Doig will present a new series specially created for the Biennale at Palazzetto Tito, near Campo San Barnaba in the chic Dorsoduro neighbourhood so adored by Venice’s expat community. There are intriguing sculptural installations: Secret Power, Simon Denny’s take on the postSnowden information world, at New Zealand’s pavilion in the stunning Marciana Library on the Piazza San Marco; and Together, the monumental heads by Catalonian artist Jaume Plensa in front of Palladio’s San Giorgio Maggiore Basilica.

he perfect way to discover authentic Venice is to wander away from the crowds. Outside of the Biennale, art is a part of daily Venetian life; wander the backstreets of a neighbourhood like Cannaregio where the tranquil churches of Madonna dell’Orto, Sant’Alvise and I Gesuiti contain masterpieces by Tintoretto, Tiepolo and Titian. At the Peggy Guggenheim Collection is a show centred on Jackson Pollock’s Mural, a monumental poured painting from 1943. The city’s municipal museums should not be forgotten. A show dedicated to Henri Rousseau is on view in the spectacular rooms of the Palazzo Ducale; at the Correr, 150 works by the likes of Max Beckmann, Otto Dix and George Grosz are included in Art During the Weimar Republic; and the Ca’Pesaro will host a Cy Twombly retrospective.

Although daily life here may seem medieval, without a car in sight, visitors rarely realise just how much La Serenissima is constantly reinventing itself. Along with the Biennale two new luxury hotels open this month on historic lagoon islands: the San Regis on San Clemente and a Marriott resort on Isola delle Rose. And despite a reputation for rip-off tourist menus, Venice now offers foodies a host of elegant new Michelinstarred restaurants and reinvigorated traditional Venetian cuisine reinterpreted by talented young chefs cooking in rustic osterie and trattorie. One of Italy’s greatest three-star Michelin chefs, Massimiliano Alajmo, has arrived at the legendary Caffè Quadri on the Piazza San Marco, while Davide Bisetto, the only Italian chef to win two Michelin stars in France, has just taken over the kitchens at the Hotel Cipriani, creating inventive dishes at the waterside Oro restaurant. “I could not resist the temptation to come back to my part of Italy,” he explains. “Here in Venice I can work directly with local fishermen and farmers growing wonderful vegetables on the lagoon islands. The clientele is as cosmopolitan and sophisticated as Paris or New York.” Bisetto adds that he is also

My own Golden Rules to survive Venice? Everyone ends up in Harry’s Bar, but stick to a bellini or martini rather than ordering a meal.
