Welcome Dear Potential New Member, I would like to congratulate you on making a wonderful decision to come to Texas Tech University and wanting to be a part of our Panhellenic Community. The memories you make during your time here will last forever. Panhellenic at Texas Tech is unlike any other. There are so many wonderful women in our community that you will get to meet and get to know this week. Our goal for you this week is to find the sorority experience you are looking for and bonding with women you forever have the privilege of calling sisters. Greek Lif at Texas Tech offers countless opportunities to get involved throughout our campus and the city of Lubbock. We have homecoming parades, community service projects, honor societies, and many leadership roles that help you grow to achieve success while on campus. These leadership roles will also shape you to become a leader in your future career. One of the best parts of joining a sorority is the benefit of the special bond you will share with women in your chapter. Becoming not just sisters and friends in college, but for a lifetime. I sincerely wish you the best of luck this week. Keep your heart and mind open to new people and new opportunities.

What is Panhellenic Council

The National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) is the national coordinating body of 26 member sororities. Locally, the Texas Tech Panhellenic Council is the governing body of the 11 NPC sororities on campus, composed of 11 executive council officers and delegates from each chapter. The Panhellenic Council coordinates Recruitment, provides programming and activities for sorority women, and works as a self-governing support system to the sororities on the Texas Tech campus. The Council promotes the four founding values of the Greek Community at Texas Tech and strives to uphold success and excellence in its members. Texas Tech’s Panhellenic Community is made up of over 2,000 undergraduate members.

Panhellenic Creed We, as undergraduate members of women’s fraternities, stand for good scholarship, for guarding of good health, for maintenance of fine standards, and for serving, to the best of our ability, our college community. Cooperation for furthering fraternity life, in harmony with its best possibilities, is the ideal that shall guide our fraternity activities. We, as fraternity women, stand for service through the development of character inspired by the close contact and deep friendship of individual fraternity and Panhellenic life. The opportunity for wide and wise human service, through mutual respect and helpfulness, is the tenet by which we strive to live.

Founding Values A C AD EM ICS

SISTE R H O O D

Texas Tech sororities strive for academic excellence and developing the scholastic achievement of their members. The sorority community is proud to be able to state that the all-greek grade point average is consistently higher than the all-University grade point average. While there is no GPA requirement to register for Recruitment, each sorority abides by their national organization’s GPA requirement, which vary per sorority, but all begin around a 3.0.

Sisterhood is the foundation of the sorority experience and combines the concept of individualism within the framework of mutual cooperation. No sorority at Texas Tech is made up of members who are exactly alike. Every individual in a sorority contributes to this aspect. Sisterhood is achieved through membership activities including: dinners, trips, social activities, late night study sessions and community service projects.

L E A D ER S H IP

P H ILAN TH R O P Y

The Greek Community offers you numerous opportunities to gain valuable leadership experience. Each sorority governs itself with its own elected officers. Most sororities encourage or ask that their members become involved in several other campus activities to enrich the student experience.

Community service and philanthropy projects give sorority members a chance to assist and give back to the community of Lubbock. All Greek sororities have national philanthropic organizations that they support locally. Sororities also collaborate in community service projects that benefit local charities.

Membership Responsibilities

M E M B ER S H IP OBLI GATIONS

Sorority members have responsibilities that need to be met in order to maintain their membership in their organization. • Regular meeting attendance • Participation in community service and philanthropic projects • Meeting financial commitments • Maintaining academic standards • Upholding the values of their organization

F I N AN CIAL OBLIGATION Sororities at TTU require all members to pay dues to support the operations of the local sorority and inter/national organization. New member dues are significantly more due to initial fees, lifelong membership fees, badge fees, etc. All dues will include insurance payment, facility fees, and other related costs. • On average at Texas Tech, the new member period will range from $950 – $1250. • Each following semester of active membership, dues will range from $500 – $800. • Each sorority structures their payments according to their organization’s bylaws and some are able to offer payment plans. Also, each sorority internally governs the cost and allocation of the fees.

A C AD EM IC OBLI GATI ON Although the Panhellenic Council does not require a specific GPA to participate in Recruitment or be a sorority member, the individual chapters establish their own requirements and strongly adhere to these grade requirements. Please refer to greeklife.ttu.edu for a listing of each semester’s grade report. Sororities were founded primarily upon principles of academic excellence, and this is a primary consideration in membership selection. 4 · PA NHELLENI C REC RUI TMEN T 2 0 1 3

What is a Rho Gamma? During Recruitment Week, you will be placed with a group of other PNMs and assigned Rho Gammas. Each Rho Gamma is a current member of the sorority community at Texas Tech and will meet with you daily during Recruitment. Your Rho Gammas will be able to personally answer questions about Recruitment and assist with any problems that may arise. A Rho Gamma’s primary purpose is to help you experience Recruitment in the most positive way possible and to help answer any questions you may have. Your Rho Gammas will have no contact with any sorority during Recruitment, and can be relied on to keep any problems or questions confidential. It is important that you attend all meetings with your Rho Gammas, as they will have important information for you. Lastly, your Rho Gammas will provide a shoulder to lean on when decisions get tough and will always lend a sympathetic ear, as they were once PNMs themselves. If you would like to contact your Rho Gamma at any time other than your scheduled meeting times, please call the Overton Hotel and ask for the Panhellenic Executive Council. Your Rho Gammas can only be contacted through the Panhellenic Executive Council during Recruitment Week.

ATTEND ALL RHO GAMMA MEETINGS as they contain important information.

DON’T STAY GLUED TO YOUR CELL PHONE. You will be busy enough making new friends and moving from event to event.

ATTEND ALL EVENTS you are invited to each day. Any unexcused absence will cause you to be removed from the Recruitment process. WEAR YOUR NAMETAG at all times when attending Recruitment events. Replacement nametags are available. INFORM YOUR RHO GAMMA AND/OR PANHELLENIC if an emergency arises. Contact your Community Advisor if you are in a Residence Hall.

DON’T BE LATE! We will do our best to keep to a strict schedule, please do the same. DON’T GO IN WITH YOUR HEART SET on one sorority. Keep an open mind! You may not be familiar with all the sororities, so take time to consider membership in each group. Every sorority offers something unique. Also consider that being a legacy of a group does not ensure membership in that group.

REPORT ANY SCHEDULE CONFLICTS to Panhellenic in advance of an anticipated absence.

DON’T PARTICIPATE IN EVENTS AFTER RECRUITMENT that include men and/or alcohol.

USE THE PROVIDED PORT-A-POTTIES during breaks. Restrooms located in break lodges are not to be used by anyone affiliated with sorority recruitment.

DON’T COMMUNICATE with current or alumnae sorority members. Strict silence is in effect and they should not pressure or influence you during this time (this includes emails, text messages and all social media outlets).

ASK QUESTIONS. Make sure to ask questions when you do not understand. Rho Gammas and Panhellenic are happy to help you through the process. BE POLITE AND RESPECTFUL when attending events. INFORM PANHELLENIC if you choose not to join a group. We ask that you withdraw from the process in writing. BE HONEST. Tell the sororities about your interests, hobbies, or accomplishments. The sorority members are excited about meeting you and getting to know you.

DON’T TALK ABOUT OTHER HOUSES. You never know who has friends where. DON’T ACCEPT gifts, letters, flowers or meals from current or alumnae sorority members. DON’T ALLOW current or alumnae sorority members imply or promise a bid to membership. This practice is invalid, illegal, and forbidden during Formal Recruitment. DON’T SHARE a home or apartment with a current sorority member during Formal Recruitment Week.

What to Expect Each Day P E R IOD I - SUNDAY, AUGUST 1 8 TH & MO N D AY, AU GU ST 1 9 TH During the first two days of Recruitment, you will attend events at each of the 11 sororities (you will see half of the sororities on Sunday and the other half on Monday). These events are 25 minutes in length and these events will give you the opportunity to meet several women from each chapter and learn about the sororities. This is the time to ask questions about the information you have been provided concerning each sorority. AT T I R E: Your favorite Texas Tech t-shirts (Please note that this is to be a regular cotton t-shirt and no variation of that and you need to have one for Sunday and one for Monday) Casual slacks, pants, capris, walking shorts, jeans, etc. Comfortable shoes are recommended.

P E R IOD II - TUESDAY, AUGUST 2 0 TH During Period II, you will have the opportunity to attend a maximum of 8 events. Each event will be 40 minutes in length, and will focus on the sorority’s national philanthropy and local philanthropy as well as community service projects. Some sororities will put on a short skit to tell you about their philanthropic activities and some sororities will have you participate in a craft that supports their philanthropy. AT T I R E: Casual sundresses, capris, or skirt and top.

P E R IOD III - W EDNESDAY, AUGU ST 2 1 ST During Period III, individuals will have the opportunity to attend a maximum of 5 events. Each event will be one hour in length, allowing the time for more in-depth conversation at each lodge. Some of the sororities will put on a short skit to teach you more about their organization. This is a time when it is important to ask any questions you might have about each particular sorority, and think about what their organization has to offer. You need to begin to think about where you feel comfortable. AT T I R E: Church attire or dressy skirt and top.

P R E FERENCE NIGHT - THURSD AY, AU GU ST 2 2 N D During Preference Night, individuals will have the opportunity to attend a maximum of 2 events. Each event will be one hour and twenty minutes long and will be a special night for you and the sorority members. Preference night is serious in nature and is a time where members will explain to you the values of their organization. You should be thinking about how the members live the values of their organization and if you can see yourself as part of their sisterhood. This is the time to consider which sorority best meets your needs and where you will be the happiest. This is the last night for you to ask whatever is on your mind as this is the night you must make your final decision. Immediately after your last Preference event, you will complete a Preference card or MRABA. This is when you will be asked to make your final decision which will be made on your own. Only you know what is best for you, so do not let anyone else influence your decision. AT T I R E: After-five or cocktail dress Beading is not necessary The dress does not have to be black.

B I D DAY - F RI DAY, AUGUST 23 R D This is the day you will receive your bid (invitation) to join the sorority you were matched with through the mutual selection pro- cess. Events will begin at the United Spirit Arena and then you will travel on the provided bus to your sorority’s welcoming event. AT T I R E: Casual bottoms. You will be given a bid day t-shirt at each sorority house. 8 · PA NHELLENI C REC RUI TMEN T 2 0 1 3

Finding the Right Fit M UTUAL SELEC TI ON PROCE SS: SELECTIN G YO U R P R E FE R ENC E S How you make your choices: • Starting Monday, at the conclusion of every day, you will meet with your Rho Gammas and will rank all eleven sororities in order of your preference at the Library computer lab. This will help us to match you to the sorority that invites you to attend their events for the following day. • The next day you will receive invitations to Recruitment events one hour prior to the first event.

How the sororities make their choices: • Sororities make their choices based on academic, leadership, and community service accomplishments and on the conversations you had with their members during the event. • The sorority women also look for PNMs that appear to uphold and value their sorority’s membership requirements and founding values. • At the end of each day, the entire sorority will approve the women receiving invitations for the following day.

MRABA

What is it & What Does it Mean? MRABA stands for Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement and is a National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) binding agreement. Every campus with a Panhellenic abides by this agreement. On preference night, this is the card that you will sign with a member of the Panhellenic Executive Council to verify the sorority in which you would like to be a member. • You must be certain that you understand the MRABA that you will be expected to sign immediately after attending the last preference event. You will receive education on this agreement prior to having to sign it. • You may choose to not sign an MRABA thus withdrawing yourself from recruitment. You must sign the withdrawal form to notify the Panhellenic Advisor of your decision. • You may choose to list only one choice on your MRABA or you may list all of the groups you attend preference events (maximum of 2). • If you Intentional Single Preference (meaning you choose to list only one choice on your MRABA) and do not match to the group you listed, you put yourself in jeopardy of not receiving a bid. You would be eligible for Snap Bidding or Continuous Open Bidding. • When you sign the MRABA, you are agreeing to accept an invitation to membership from any sorority you have listed. You must understand that if you list a group on your MRABA, are matched to that group and receive an invitation to membership, you are bound to that group for one calendar year. • Once the MRABA have been submitted, it cannot be altered or changed. • If you receive an invitation to membership (a bid) from a group you have listed and you choose not to accept it, you may not pledge any other NPC sorority on the Texas Tech campus for one calendar year. • If you do not receive a bid from any group you have listed, you are eligible for Continuous Open Bidding. You must understand that not all NPC groups will have available place for new members. PA NHEL L ENI C REC RU IT M EN T 2013 · 9

Greek Life Programming C I R C L E OF SISTERHOOD Panhellenic at Texas Tech has adopted Circle of Sisterhood as its official philanthropy. Circle of Sisterhood is an organization committed to removing educational barriers and providing opportunities for our less fortunate sisters worldwide. Right now, we have sisters worldwide in need of our help. They are suffering from poverty, oppression, misogyny and brutality. Education empowers women and girls and is the most effective way to help them fight these issues. As sorority women, we have in common access to a college education when not even 7% of the world’s population goes to college. The Circle of Sisterhood Foundation is a mechanism by which all sorority women can stand together across affiliation to make a difference in the lives of millions of girls and women who don’t have the same access to education that we do.

J U N IOR PA NHELLENI C Junior Panhellenic is an organization composed of sorority members who were initiated within the past year. This group of Greek women work closely with Panhellenic Council to assist with Panhellenic duties and gain experience that prepares members for strong leadership potential. The purpose of Junior Panhellenic is to promote interfraternity friendship and increase awareness, knowledge and participation in the Panhellenic Association. It encourages the special responsibilities and good campus citizenship that sorority membership entails.

G R EEK L EA D ERSHIP The purpose of Greek Leadership is to further the education of sophomore and junior members about the Greek Community and to provide training for future leadership roles within each fraternity and sorority and in the Greek Community. We seek to develop a better understanding of the following concepts: • History, structure and function of Greek Letter Organizations and of the four major umbrella organizations • Fraternal values and their application • Personal style of leadership • Ethical responsibilities of leadership • Conflict Resolution • Planning for the future of Greek Letter Organizations and the benefits of membership after college

R HO L A M B DA The purpose of Rho Lambda is to honor those women within the sorority community who have exhibited the highest qualities of leadership and service to their Greek community and their sorority. They are women who have furthered the ideals and principles of the Greek community throughout their years of sorority affiliation.

OR DER OF O MEGA Order of Omega is a leadership honor society for members of Greek organizations. Order of Omega recognizes juniors and seniors who have exemplified high standards in the areas of scholarship, leadership, involvement within their respective organization and within the Greek, campus, and local community.

Formal sorority recruitment at Texas Tech University is only conducted in the fall semester, prior to the start of school. However, if you aren’t ready to join the community at this time, we offer several additional opportunities to join a sorority.

C ON TIN UOUS OPEN BIDDI NG ( CO B) COB begins immediatley following the end of the formal recruitment process, on Bid Day. COB is also sometimes held in the spring semester; however, not all sororities are eligible to participate in COB. In order to host COB events, a chapter must have open spots on their chapter roster. For more information about the COB process, please contact the Center for Campus Life following formal recruitment at 806-742-5433. You may also fill out a COB Intertest Form on our website, under the "Recruitment" tab. Once we receive your COB interest form, we will share it with those sororities participating in COB.

S P R I NG R ECRUI TMENT While we do not host a spring formal recuitment process, we do facilitate an interest meeting for any women interested in learning about the Greek Community and exploring membership opportunties duirng the spring semester.
