Standardized ADULT CODE CART & PEDIATRIC CODE CART
Tuality has standardized the Adult and Pediatric Code Carts in all Tuality HealthCare Departments. Updates and Improvements to the Code Cart include: 1. New Equipment Drawers 2. New Code Cart Checklists 3. Updated Photo Reference Guides 4. Updated Equipment Content Lists 5. New Medication Expiration Date Labels with Lock Numbers 6. New Equipment Expiration Date Labels with Lock Numbers
New Standardized ID Code Carts (ADULT and PEDIATRIC) Code Cart Identification Number is located on the upper right hand corner, each department is designated a code cart number. A replacement cart will be delivered when the designated code cart is being sterilized and restocked following a code event and then returned to your department.
New Medication Label The New Medication Label includes; The first drug to expire, the date the first drug will expire and the lock number on the medication drawer. This number should be verified by the staff checking the code cart to ensure safe medication storage.
New Equipment Label The New Equipment Label includes; The first equipment to expire, the date the first equipment will expire and the lock number on the equipment drawer. This number should be verified by the staff checking the code cart to ensure safe equipment storage.
New LOCK number tracking Equipment and Medications within the code cart are locked with break away tamper proof locks. Daily tracking of lock numbers will ensure that the medications and equipment are not missing or have not been tampered with to ensure patient safety and verify that emergency equipment and medication will be available for staff during a code event.
Top of the Code Cart (ADULT) Defibrillator Battery check, Defibrilltor Test Shock, Pads, Electrodes, Laryngoscope Kit and Light, Blades and Extra Batteries. The defibrillator should be plugged into a RED outlet at all times and the manufacture recommends that the Defibrillator remains plugged into a RED outlet during test shock procedure. And follow the instructions located on the Defibriltor Cord for test shock instructions. Don’t forget to attach the cord to the patient ready pads after performing the test shock.
ClipBoard (ADULT) The Code Cart ClipBoard contains the Historian Paperwork; - Data Summary Record, Quality Improvement Form, STAT Lab Sheet and the Daily Code Cart Checklist Log
Sides of the Cart (ADULT) Check the Oxygen Tank to ensure that the dial within the meter is pointing in the green full zone. The opposite side has a slide out drawer that can be used to prepare ACLS Medications.
Back of the Cart (ADULT) Check to ensure that the CPR Back Board is Present
Updated IV Pole (ADULT) Check to see that the Adult or Pediatric Manual Resuscitator (Ambu Bag and Value) are present. Additionally, the ACLS Algorithms and Code Cart Inventory are located on the IV Pole for reference materials. Check the Expiration Dates.
Airway Drawer #2 (ADULT) Within the Code Cart is the Advanced Airway Equipment which includes an intubation kit with various size instruments and airway maintenance equipment
New IV Access Drawer #3 (ADULT ) Drawer #3 now contains a designated Vascular Access equipment to allow for quick access to administer ACLS medications
New EKG – ABG – Procedural Needles Drawer #4 (ADULT) A new advanced procedural drawer was designed to improve emergency diagnostic procedures and interventions
Updated Ambu – Resp – Vac Drawer #5 (ADULT) The Ambu – Resp – Vac drawer was updated. The vaccum, sution head control and suction canister and tubing equipment was consolidated into 1 bag to allow quick set up for emergency suctioning.
New PPE Drawer #6 (ADULT) The bottom Drawer of the Adult Code Cart now contains all PPE necessary for staff safety; small, medium and large vinyl gloves, gowns, masks, alcohol hand wash.
*External Equipment (Only applicable to ED and ICU) Critical Access and Emergency Care units have additional emergency equipment at their disposable. This includes; transportable external suction and set up, Intubation tray with additional intubation medication kit, and Intubation Glidescope device. This equipment is also checked in these designated critical access areas along with their daily Code Cart Checklist.

Side of Cart (PEDIATRIC ONLY) Broselow Tape on the Pediatric Code Cart – Ensure that it is present and not expired. Pull out Shelf
Back of the Cart (PEDIATRIC) Check to ensure that the CPR Back Board is Present

Colored Drawers (PEDIATRIC) Within the Code Cart are colored drawers that coorispond to the size and weight of the child. The pediatric code cart is intented for children from (kg – Kg). It is not appropriate to use the pediatric code cart on a small adult. The pediatric code cart is designated to children from 0 to approximately 12 years of age.
Sign off the Checklist with PASS or FAIL. If there was a failed checkoff inspections, correct this failure immediately by referring to the instructions and contact information on the back of the checklist. Sign using your User Name ID.
