PROJECT OVERVIEW

Located in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia, our project proposes a mixed-use building separated into two 7-story buildings. There are a total of 111 apartment units, a variety between studios, 1 bedrooms, and 2 bedrooms. Parking is available on the first floor of the building, with a total of 31 spaces. There are a two commercial spaces, a restaurant and a cafe that are accessible by all. The overall design concept is influenced by the emphasizing the picturesque views surrounding the site as well as the natural diagonal of Frankford Ave cutting through the site.

OVERVIEW

CLIMATE

HYDROLOGY

● ●

Winds come from Northwest directions. Temperatures range from 87 degrees F to 95 degrees F in the summer and 57 degrees F to 75 degrees in the winter. With the shadows study we see that there are not a lot of buildings blocking the sun from our target site, so there is more freedom of design. However, attention needs to be put on the placement of windows to prevent overheating in spaces.

Over-building may overwhelm the city’s sewer system. Length of the water table will influence what kind of foundation we select.

GEOLOGY ●

DRAINAGE ●

Combined sewers location ○ Potential for flooding of the site depending on the amount of rainfall

Trenton Gravel cover 30% of philadelphia contain sand, gravel and silt Gray or pale-reddish-brown, very gravelly sand interstratified with cross bedded sand and clay-silt beds. How can the geology/soil bearing capacity and change the foundation footing.

VEGETATION ●

The neighborhood lacks on trees, so as a design idea we could change the landscape adding more vegetation that would help the site and the community. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTIC ● On N. Delaware Ave it noisy with the highway and busy street with car drove by. ● On the other side is pretty empty with parking lot of the casino will be busy during the weekend or holiday. Mostly pretty quiet and isolate just for the neighborhood to run. ● River trail - people walk and run there keep in mind our site pretty isolate. ● Sloping of the site will effect were we place the flooring.

SOIL ● Philadelphia is a city with a history of industrialization. Which Lead compounds were used as antiknock agents in gasoline until 1989. The other major source of lead in residential soils is leaded paint. ● Since our site Storage for road retail tool potential have high concentrate of lead.

SITE ANALYSIS

Red arrows represent the two corridors that shaped the building. We decided to create two tunnels so pedestrians coming from Frankford Avenue corner and the city would be able to see across the building and the form would not obstruct through one’s view. Also, the main loud points are the corner of Frankford Avenue and the Delaware Avenue.

PROPOSED BUILDING

Here we add a third factor that will shape the buildings the corridor view between Craig’s buildings. We decided to take this corridor in consideration, and again create a gap between the two proposed buildings, so whoever is on the other site would be able to see through and tenants from the new development would also have views of the river.
