Residential Strategies Working Group proposes new housing plans on, off campus

The Residential Strategies Working Group (RSWG) is now looking to implement its recommendations for student housing, which include offering more on-campus housing options for juniors and seniors, improving existing residential facilities and potentially charging different prices for different on-campus living arrangements. The RSWG initially presented its recommendations to University President Anthony Monaco and the Board of Trustees in May, according to Provost and Senior Vice President David Harris.

The RSWG was co-chaired by Harris, Executive Vice President Patricia Campbell, Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences James Glaser and Dean of the School of Engineering Jianmin Qu. Harris explained that it was comprised of 20 members of faculty, staff and students and that the group was divided into two segments: Campbell headed one focused on the financial side of residential strategy, while Glaser and Qu

Off-campus housing Monaco commissioned the group’s formation primarily due to growing concern about housing for juniors and seniors, Harris said.

Harris pointed out that the university has a two-year on-campus residency requirement for students, after which some upperclassmen are able to stay on campus, but many are not, which, according to Harris, can pose problems.

“Our concerns are being raised by ordinances in Somerville and similar discussions in Medford about the number of students that can be in a dwelling, and … those constraints will obviously increase the price per student because the landlords [are] not going to drop the total rent,” he said.

Tufts launches Trans Support Task Force, hopes to increase oncampus resources

Tufts is launching the Trans Support Task Force to improve university resources available for transgender students and streamline communication within the Tufts community, according to Nino Testa, director of the LGBT Center and task force co-chair.

The other co-chair is Chief Diversity Officer and Associate Provost Mark Brimhall-Vargas, and the task force will hold its first meeting on Oct. 20, Testa said.

According to Testa, Office of Equal Opportunity Director and Title IX Coordinator Jill Zellmer, who works across all three Tufts campuses, will be on the task force as well to help broaden the scope of its efforts.

Zellmer said that one of her goals as a task force member is to make sure Tufts’ public buildings are in compliance with new state laws concerning public accommodations for transgender individuals. The law, signed by Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker on July 8, will go into effect on Oct. 1.

Testa said that while Tufts has accomplished much in regard to creating an environment that supports all forms of gender identity and expression, he hopes that the task force will ultimately provide a more structured overview of persistent issues and identify areas in need of improvement across the university.

Brimhall-Vargas agreed that the university would need to review its current policies in order to make them more current and useful.

“Part of the working of the task force is to figure out which policies need to be updated,” Brimhall-Vargas told the Daily in an email.

Testa said that the development of the task force is another step in the LGBT Center’s ongoing efforts to bring the university closer in line with the Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals’ list of best practices for supporting transgender students.

der and non-binary community, according to Testa.

“We were very intentional about making sure there was good representation on the task force of transgender and non-binary students, faculty and staff,” Testa said. “We need to let the conversation be driven by the needs, experiences and voices of those folks.”

Unlike the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering (AS&E), Tufts’ Boston campus does not have an LGBT Center, Testa said. However, according to the School of Medicine’s student groups and activity website, the inter-school student group Tufts Biomedical Queer Alliance aims to connect lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersex and allied students and professionals on Tufts’ Boston campus.

Tufts’ Grafton campus, which also does not have an LGBT center, has a diversity council that works toward implementing the best practices for supporting transgender and non-binary students, according to Testa.

tifying and addressing the needs of transgender students of color and other intersectional identities will also be a focus of the task force.

According to Brimhall-Vargas, one of the first priorities of the task force will be to address issues with changing names in the Student Information System (SIS). Currently, if a student wants to change their name, it is difficult to update the system to reflect that change.

One of the primary long-term goals of the task force will be to improve communication with the entire Tufts community concerning resources for transgender students, according to both Testa and Brimhall-Vargas.

“I think one of the biggest problems has been a failure on the part of the university to really communicate to the community what has been done and what’s being done,” Testa said.

Another goal of the task force will be to expand transgender resources beyond AS&E, Testa said. This would

University plans to renovate Miller, Houston HOUSING

“As the Green Line ends up hopefully coming to [the] Boston and College Ave. station, that’s only going to increase demand for housing in [the] Somerville and Medford area, which means prices are also going to go up for our students,” he said.

Harris said that the university is trying to avoid a future situation in which off-campus housing would be so expensive that it would force some students to live much further away from campus than others. According to Harris, it would likely be middle-income students who would suffer the most, as wealthy students could afford the increased rent and less affluent students could rely on financial aid to cover off-campus housing costs.

“You’d hate to have it sort of become a commuter school for the kids who are middle income and residential for the other two,” he said.

According to Harris, a solution the RSWG proposed is to convert university-owned wood-framed houses on the periphery of campus, currently used for office space and faculty and staff transitional housing, to student housing.

“So it looks to the student very much [like] what you have now [living off campus], except your landlord is the university, and we can control the costs more instead of potentially having it skyrocket,” Harris said.

Harris admitted that the faculty, staff and various departments currently using university-owned houses would have to move further away from campus.

However, positives of having students living in those houses would include rent control, provided utilities, no responsibility to pay rent during the summer months and more of a buffer between students and neighbors.

“The challenge is that the schedule of a student is often different from the schedule of a young family with a toddler or a newborn, or a retired person or others who are beyond college age,” he said.

Glaser mentioned that if the university serves as a landlord, students could have a gentler transition to life after graduation.

“It’s not the same thing as having a room in a corridor-style residence hall,” Glaser said. “You’d still have to figure out how to get your food and your groceries, but figuring out how to deal with unscrupulous landlords, having to deal with neighbors, these are things that wouldn’t be part of that experience.”

Harris noted that steps have already been taken to maintain residential properties: The university began and completed several deferred maintenance projects this summer, including placing new roofing on Hillsides Apartments and new windows and brickwork on Metcalf Hall, he said.

According to Patrick Collins, executive director of public relations, deferred maintenance refers to an investment by the university to update and replace deteriorating building infrastructure, such as mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, along with windows and interiors, in order to extend the life of the building.

The next step will be more intense renovations to Houston Hall and Miller Hall, Harris said. The main focus of these improvements will be creating better common areas and social spaces in the dorms, which Harris believes many residence halls are currently lacking. These changes could potentially begin next summer and would take approximately two years to complete, he added.

“As provost, I’m not in the dorms, and it’s one thing to hear about the quality, but it’s another thing to walk around and see them,” Harris said, referring to a dorm tour he took with Glaser. “I saw Houston, and what had a big impact on me is how few common spaces there are in Houston, and Miller’s a little better, but not much.”

The RSWG also proposed geographically grouping students according to their academic year, Harris said. This would

mean first-years would be clustered in one residential area of campus, sophomores another, and so on, he explained.

On-campus pricing and capacity The RSWG also debated the implementation of differential room and board fees — meaning that students would pay more for more luxurious dorms — often used by other universities, according to Qu. He compared that to the current housing structure, in which the university has different dorms with different levels of comfort, and all students pay the same price.

The working group decided that they would not be taking the university in that particular direction right now, Qu said.

However, the group is considering changing the price of on-campus housing based on class year, as seniors typically live in apartment-style housing on campus as opposed to dorm rooms, he added.

“If you are in the senior year and you live in the apartment housing … living there could be somewhat higher [priced] than living in the big dorm,” Qu said. “So I think that way it eliminates some of the potential issues that could come on the horizon based on student income, family income level.”

Glaser said that it would be fair to raise the price of living in Sophia Gordon Hall or Hillsides to the cost of equivalent apartment options that exist off campus.

“It does make some sense to have apartment-style housing be priced in a different way than corridor-style because those residents hall are competing with off-campus housing that is comparable,” Glaser said.

“We’ve had a lot of really good work that’s been done in different corners of campus,” Testa said. “So that interest is already there, and I’m hoping the task force can be a more formal way to capitalize on some of that interest in the work that people are already doing.”

Brimhall-Vargas reiterated the goal of

centralizing support across the university.

“It’s a part of making sure that our policies and practices create a baseline of support across the whole institution,” Brimhall-Vargas said. “Trans members of our community exist across all [of ] our campuses, and we simply will not overlook that.”

According to Testa, this is a question of logistics as well as resource allocation.

“I’ve gotten emails from community members asking for pronoun fluency improvement, so I’ve done pronoun

trainings on the Boston campus,” Testa said. “Part of the task force’s goal is to find out who is situated to be doing those things and how can we make sure that the work we’re doing is going to be most efficient for the whole university and not just siloed into AS&E.” Testa said he hopes that the task force will also improve communication in the other direction and provide a more streamlined way for members of the Tufts community across all campuses to make suggestions based on their needs.

BlaQ(ueer) Magic event draws full house, aspiring poets

— BY GIL JACOBSON Tabias Wilson (LA ’13) returned to campus to speak about his book, “Godless Circumcisions: A Recollecting & Re-membering of Blackness, Queerness & Flows of Survivance,” where he was met with a full room inside the Granoff Music Center on the evening of Sept. 29. The event, titled “BlaQ(ueer) Magic,” was sponsored by the LGBT Center and the Africana Center.

In an interview with the Daily, Wilson, now a third-year law student at Howard University, described BlaQ(ueer) Magic as conveying the magic about being black.

“BlaQ(ueer) Magic speaks to the ability of black folks, despite all the things that white people [do], to always overcome,” Wilson said.

Wilson has previously led similar events at colleges and bookstores across the United States.

“Blackness is an ever-evolving creation of the cosmos … something that is visible but never spoken,” Wilson said.

He cited the black prophetic tradition, which allows black people to express their experiences and beliefs about overcoming challenges they have faced, as why he first became involved in public speaking.

“My grandmother was, in the beginning, very interested in kind of like black liberation movements, movements for black feminism, the freedom of black queer people, and so when we were growing up, she’d always have us reciting things like pieces from Maya Angelou and Malcolm X … and these great thinkers,” Wilson said.

Tufts was the basis for much of the material Wilson covered in his book “Godless Circumcisions,” he said. Professors including Christina Sharpe and “the great Jean Wu” fueled Wilson’s inspiration when he wrote the book.

“So it was only fitting to come back here … the home of one of the greatest plantation sites in the United States to kind of do a tribute of remembering,” Wilson said. “Not just remembering as in bringing back together pieces that have long since been forgotten.”

Wilson said that during his time at Tufts, he contributed efforts toward starting the African American Studies program, now known as Africana Studies, and the Center for the Study of Race and Democracy. He held leadership positions in several student groups on campus including the Black Student Union, Queer Students of Color & Allies and the Theta Chi Fraternity.

Wilson began the event by thanking everyone for coming, before opening the floor to people who wanted to read or speak for the first part of the program.

“This is a community space, I don’t live in Boston anymore, this is y’all’s home, y’all live here,” Wilson said.

Senior Jonathan Jacob Moore started off with two short readings, including one called “Ode to Work.”

He was followed by Jonathan J. Joseph, known as Mr. Johnny, a local poet who has lived just off campus for two years but has never before been on campus.

“Oppressor, oppressed, means forgetting everything,” Mr. Johnny said.

Mr. Johnny then continued with an encore about his grandmother.

“My class-based consciousness may be a parity … itself,” Mr. Johnny said. “They have no hope, this could last forever.”

Wilson invites community to share the mic Delk started by singing a melody, “Na na na na, Na na na na, Hey hey hey, Goodbye,” and continued on, “Everything that I was brought up to believe in is a lie.”

She first discussed the flawed idea that everyone can achieve their goals through hard work, insisting that this only applies to white men born in the 1950s or from the Ronald Reagan era. She also talked about the trouble her family has faced being what she calls “upper poor:” having too much money to be considered poor and not having enough money to be considered wealthy, yet not really falling in the middle either.

“We are rich and love- and immorality-filled with hopes and dreams,” Delk said.

Afterwards, Wilson played a Janet Jackson musical interlude before beginning the next portion of the program. During the interlude, LGBT Center Director Nino Testa thanked the Africana Center for co-sponsoring the event with the LGBT Center and briefly introduced Wilson, who continued to discuss his book in further detail throughout the event.

“Some things just ain’t right in America,” Wilson said, before he began reading aloud passages from the book.

In his address to the audience, Testa recalled meeting Wilson as a student at a Students Acting for Gender Equality meeting at the Women’s Center when Testa was working there. He commended Wilson’s problem-solving skills and ability to work with others.

“It was a powerful example of when somebody is ready to work with others … how much they get done,” Testa said.

Members of the Tufts community shared their excitement over Wilson returning to share his story.

“We are always excited to see our alumni on campus, and see them doing well and share their experiences, and so we’re just really excited to co-sponsor this event,” Africana Center Director Katrina Moore said in an interview with the Daily.

Men's soccer prepares for double-header Homecoming weekend SOCCER

continued from back Overtime was relatively uneventful until the dying moments of the second period. First-year Tufts forward Joseph Braun took the ball and burst down the right wing, deftly avoiding a slide tackle on the edge of the box. From this newly-created space, Braun played a great ball on the ground into the box, finding junior midfielder Christian Zazzali who made a run inside. Zazzali smartly placed the ball into the top left corner, making the score 1-0 to Tufts with only seconds to go in the game.

It was an unusual game for the Jumbos, who fired off the fewest shots in a competition (14), including both overtimes, so far this season. This is a stark contrast to the 30 shots Tufts fired against Plymouth State and 38 attempts against Bates College a few weeks ago. Tufts was lucky to come away with the win, and the victory meant a lot, as Brandeis had defeated them in their two previous matchups.

“We were almost shocked by ourselves, by how well we were playing, because we knew [Brandeis] was a great opponent,” senior midfielder Kevin Lawson said.

According to senior co-captain and midfielder Zach Halliday, the team mentality was what made a difference in the game.

“We fought, competed and battled much better than we had all season, understanding the implications [of the game] and understanding the type of effort we would need to put in to get things done,” Halliday said.

After an eventful week, the Jumbos are now 3-3-1 in all games and 1-1-1 in the NESCAC conference. They face a tough double-header against Amherst and Hamilton during Homecoming, but Lawson believes they can handle the back-to-back games.

“I think, more than any team I’ve seen in my whole DIII soccer career, we have so much depth,” Lawson said.

“There is very little variance in skill level. The last player on our bench is almost as effective as our first player on the field, so that gives us a unique ability to dig deep in the bench. Almost every player on the team sets foot on the field, and that really caters to a double-header.”

Tufts plays Amherst (2-0-1 in the NESCAC) this Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and Hamilton (3-1-0 in NESCAC) at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, both at Bello Field.

“Pressuring the quarterback will help out our defense as a whole because it’s going to make it more difficult for the quarterback to see his reads and puts less pressure on our defensive backs,” junior defensive tackle Doug Harrison said. “That’s something that every week we focus on. Our goal is to hit the quarterback. We want to put that pressure on him and we want to give him as much trouble as we can so that makes his job a lot tougher.”

Meanwhile, the Bates offense is unique among NESCAC teams in its utilization of the triple option, a strategy that threatens the defense with three possible ball carriers on any given play.

“There are all three phases with the triple option,” Civetti said. “You’ve got to stop the dive, you’ve got to force the pitch and then you get to tackle the pitch. When

you play a triple option team, it’s really the only time that there is assignment-based football for the defense … It’s a big change of pace, but [defensive coordinator Kevin] Farr and the defensive staff are well prepared. They’ve got a great plan.”

The triple option relies on the quarterback’s ability to make multiple split-second decisions during the play based on the reactions of unblocked defenders and predictions of where running room will develop. In response, the Jumbos have spent considerable time readying themselves for this unique challenge.

“We definitely prepare for the triple option,” Harrison said. “Really in camp, we get that preparation – not as specific as we will this week, but we definitely have a preparation for it. [It’s] a baseline that we’ll build off of.”

Bates’ most central offensive player is sophomore quarterback Sandy Plashkes, who seems more comfortable making plays with his feet than he is slinging

passes from the pocket. In one running play last week, Plashkes gashed Trinity’s defense for 57 yards, demonstrating his ability to generate chunk yardage on the ground.

Despite that big run, Plashkes finished with a net 54 yards and a touchdown on the ground to go along with 36 yards and an interception through the air, as Bates’ offense found itself bottled up in the second half. Containing the quarterback will go a long way towards declawing the Bobcats’ offense this weekend.

Jumbos clinch overtime victory against Brandeis, fall to Wesleyan

Tufts men’s soccer traveled to Brandeis on Saturday where the team pulled off a last-minute victory in the second half of overtime, extending their win streak to three.

That streak ended on Tuesday, though, in a 1-0 defeat at home against Wesleyan.

In the first half of the Wesleyan game, Tufts started aggressively and managed four shots within the first 10 minutes. The Jumbos bombarded the Cardinals goal with 10 shots through halftime. First-year midfielder/forward Gavin Tasker and senior forward Gaston Becherano led the team with three shots each, but neither could find the back of the net. The first 45 minutes appeared as if they were going to end scoreless until Cardinals junior defender Nick Jackson capitalized on senior co-captain midfielder/ defender Charlie Gruner’s free kick to put the Cardinals up 1-0 just before halftime.

Tufts continued to pressure the Wesleyan defense in the second half, coming within inches of scoring multiple times and generating nine shots to Wesleyan’s two, but Tufts was still unable to score. The Jumbos tried desperately for a late equalizer and managed a flurry of six shots in the last 15 minutes, but many

“We need to improve our management of the details in the game,” coach Josh Shapiro said. “We are playing well, moving the ball well and dominating matches in possession and territory. However, our

final ball and decisions are sometimes letting us down. We have a lot to be excited about and just need to improve in a few areas to be very good.”

Despite the tough loss that ended the Jumbos’ winning streak, some of the firstyears stood out throughout the game, most notably Tasker and midfielder Zach

Lane. Their speed and technical skills made things difficult for the Wesleyan outside defenders and their dangerous crosses created a lot of scoring opportunities.

“We’re excited to see them progress,” Shapiro said earlier this month. “I don’t think any of [the first-years] are perfect yet, but they are ambitious, talented and have an honest work-rate. That gives me a lot of confidence that we can get better and better.”

Tufts played a physical game against the Brandeis Owls on Saturday, committing 28 fouls to Brandeis’ 16. Tufts won in the end, but for the first half of the game, the two teams stalemated. Neither team had many opportunities, and both failed to capitalize on their chances. The Jumbos’ attack struggled in the first half: It took 37 minutes to create their first chance, with junior midfielder Tyler Kulcsar heading a shot high off a corner kick from first-year midfielder Brett Rojas.

The second half was similar, but the momentum started to shift in Tufts’ favor.

The Jumbos had a total of nine shots in the half, four of which came from Rojas, forcing saves from the Owls’ junior goalkeeper Ben Woodhouse, but the game ended level and continued into overtime. see SOCCER, page 7

Jumbos to host Bobcats in Homecoming matchup

After rallying from behind in the fourth quarter last weekend to overcome a two touchdown deficit and defeat Wesleyan (0-1) under the lights during the team’s first ever night game, Tufts is now 1-0 and preparing for a matchup against Bates (0-1) on Saturday.

Last year, Tufts eked out a 17-16 win at Bates in the fourth quarter thanks to senior kicker Willie Holmquist, who knocked the game-winning 34-yard field goal through the uprights. Playing at home this time, the Jumbos look forward to their Homecoming matchup against the Bobcats.

For coach Jay Civetti, the most significant takeaway from Tufts’ season opener against Wesleyan is that players need to work better together to implement the game plan in order to be successful.

“It wasn’t like the plays weren’t there offensively [during Saturday’s game],” Civetti said. “It was more just coming down to the execution of what needed to happen. We were able to drive down the field twice and win the game. With our seniors and with the leadership on this team, I don’t worry about us not taking an opponent seriously … Guys are not satisfied with what happened Saturday.

They’re looking to be better than we were, as individuals and as a team.”

Though the sample size is small, the numbers point to an advantage for the Tufts offense and its ground game in particular.

In last week’s contest against Trinity, Bates allowed 38 points and failed to score after its first possession. The most striking statistic is that Trinity ball carriers gained 294 rushing yards on 46 attempts. That averaged out to 6.4 yards per carry, highlighting a potential weakness in the Bobcat defense.

The Bobcats’ vulnerability on the ground plays directly into the greatest strength of the Jumbos’ offense: Tufts’ dominant rushing attack, led by senior tri-captain Chance Brady as running back.

Brady notched 151 yards and two touchdowns on 22 attempts in the comeback victory against the Cardinals. The biggest threat to the Tufts running attack is Bates’ senior linebacker Mark Upton, who was

second in the NESCAC last year in two key categories: total tackles (71) and yards lost during tackles-for-loss (55). Preventing Upton from disrupting Brady’s running lanes will be essential for the Jumbos to make substantial progress on the ground.

On the defensive side, Tufts will seek to build on the in-game improvements implemented last week. The Jumbo defense conceded just 66 yards and no

points during the entire second half after allowing the Cardinals to tally 244 yards and 14 points during the first two quarters. Tufts’ pass rush — which managed two sacks in the game against Wesleyan — will search for the vulnerabilities in a Bates offensive line that allowed eight tackles for loss, including three sacks, see FOOTBALL, page 7
