other hand there are more breathing places for people to rest. One of the main purposes of the project was to integrate the main basic principles and achieve successful transitions between them. It was a good start and helpful work for me to develop my knowledge and skills about basic design .

created according to their uses: public, semi-public, semi-private and private. While there is a big square in the heart of the area for all users, there are different kinds of exhibition places in its surroundings. On the

1/1 000 design project

In first year of my education, to learn about basic design principles, we have studied on a lot of projects: abstractions, three-dimensional rhythm works, models etc. One of the important works was to create exhibition places in a topographic area in Metu Campus as individuals. The main purpose was to learn more about the orientations and the main elements of design, such as, nodes, landmarks, paths etc. Places are

LEARN DEVELOP In this project, we have started to study with building units and tried to develop a vision for an antique city: Sagalassos. We went to the site and do some analyzes about features of the area; historical buildings, topography of the area, etc. The city was impressive and there were a lot of historical values and knowledge. Our visions could be our utopias hence I decided to develop a university campus like village institutes which were founded in 1950s in Turkey. The main aim of the project was to create sense of place by using building units and platforms and integrating them efficiently with our visions. To create linkages between them nodes and paths were really significant as basic design elements. Moreover, while historical buildings are protected, new buildings are integrated to the system according to their uses. New buildings are created as dormitories for students and dwelling units for teachers and employees, and generally historical buildings are functioned as faculties and commercial buildings. Historical functions of places are tried to be protected also. For instance, there was an agora in antique city for people to meet and shop, in the project; agora is still used as a gathering and shopping space for campus dwellers. In this project we learn more about placing building units and creating a successfull system.

AGRI’ CULTURE In our second year we started to work scale city plan. Moreover we learned to develeop a vision according to potentials of the area and how can we reflect these visions to the city in all scales. We study about Manavgat district in Antalya. Firstly, we analayzed the features of the city from different aspects. Then, we determined a vision for the city. We worked as groups and our vision focused on agricultural and cultural features of the city in larger scales. Also in 1/ 1000 scale design project urban agriculture as an Green System

important element to reflect this vision. For instance there is agricultural actvities in residential areas and schools and bazaars where the productions of residential areas are sold. Beside

the river. We tried to integrate river to the city and we create a big square near the river. There are cultural and public buildings like congress center, library, music hall, art gallery which surround the square. Along the river there are sport facilities, recreational activities and commercial buildings. From the square there is an alley which is surrounded by workshops and stores. In this project we tried to achieve to create a sense of Nolli Map

place with potentials of the area and urban design tools.

In 1/200 scale project we choose an area from our 1/ 1000 design project as individual and we learn more about building scale elements. For example we tried to place buildings for getting sun more efficiently without obstructing each other. Also we learn about columns placement, designing underground car parking areas, landscape elements and pavements. This scale helped us to think more detail and carefully in urban design processes especially while placing buildings.

than our other studied cities especially according to its population and surface. Again we started our studies with doing someanalyses and determining a vision as groups. According to potentials of the area, we give some specialities to districts in a hierarchical system. Denizli has great touristic importance and potentials of different kind of tourism activities; such as, cultural, sports, health tourism etc. Also Denizli has a significant industrial and agricultural background which cannot be disregarded. Hence we create different tourism corridors and a system which integrate agriculture and industry. However the main focus of our vision was tourism: Sustainable Tourism City- Denizli.

and natural values, we choose ‘sustainable 1/ 25 000 scale we tried to develop the central district by integrating with other districts via developing some decisions coherent with our vision; such as, spa hotels, agro- villages, bcycle roads, trekking roads, camping areas etc. In central district, some tourism centers and three sub-center which will help the central bussines district are composed. Beside we connect these centers with a good working transportation and green network.

was also one of the problematic area and we decided to study on commercial center in 1/ 5 000 project. The commercal buildings are too high and functions are scattered. Moreover in the area there are several historical places which lost their importances and we tried to develop these historical areas by bringing them to new functions. Also we tried to develop new functions for commercial areas, like creating Textile Street because of historical textile industry and Leodikeia Street because of Leodikeia Historical Site in the city. The main purpose of the project was distributing facilities equally and improving the commercial center by doing some renovations and integrating these new functions successfully.

Analysis In 1/ 1 000 scale design project, we study as individuals and I choose the commercial center’s one of the problematic area to work on. Firstly I do some analysis on existing New bus station project

situation of the area. One of the important problems was a highway which separates the

city center from other parts. Beside train station was a divisive element and it was wide apart from people’s use. Also there was a bus station project which is going to create chaos between train and bus stations. Moreover there was unbalanced urbanization; such as, different kind of conditions and heights of the buildings. Because of that all these problems cause a separation between both sides, I decided to use train station as a connective element to integrate two parts.

Historical Axes

In design process, historical areas inspired me and I tried to create two different axis: historical and modern. For historical axis, there were Kirishane which was a leather workshop district before and now it is dilapidated area and Kaleici which is an historical commercial district. Between these two areas, I used small buildings which reflect the historical pattern and I tried to improve these two areas’ conditions with new functions. In this axis buildings are used as workshops, stores, cafes and restaurants. In modern axis I used larger buildings which reflect the modern uses. They are commercial and office buildings which are mixed with residential uses.

STATION STREET section

Train Station was the most important element to integrate these two axes and functions. Main purpose of the project was to achieve pedestrian movement and

Analysis In our fourth year, we studied on a small coastal town which has an urban sprawl problem through coastal zone: Ordu. As a group, we do some landuse analysis: in larger and city scales. Firstly, we analyse the coastal settlements in Black Sea region which are near Ordu. The analyses include the comparison between development levels of the cities and their macroforms.

Problems of Municipal Plan

Analysis In city scale the analysis include the historical development of the city, risk analysis and the problems of last municipal plan. Historical development of the city is examined according the decisions of municipal plans of the city in years. These decisions have caused city to sprawl in time through the coast. The problems of existing urban developments and their Urban Risks

effects to nature and city; and the natural risks such as flood plains are examined under the risk analysis.

After analyses, we study in 1/ 100 000 scale project. Firstly we do some regional analysis and create a development strategy for the region with respect the potentials of the area. We develop a regional vision which is based on ecological sustainability: Integrated Coastal ZoneSustainable Development Project. We analyze the natural conservation areas, areas which are in danger like forests which are destroyed because of the agricultural activities, etc. in the coastal and rear zone (Samsun- Ordu-Giresun- Trabzo- Sivas). With respect the potentials of the area we develop tourism corridors and agriculture corridors and according to these corridors we create a transportation network.

in city region. According to potentials and the problems of the region, We create a hierarchical development between Beekeeping and Animal Husbandry

districts: 1st, 2nd and 3dh degree districts, transportation network. For example some of the problems were the dense urbanization in the coastal zone, the destruction of the coastal area and the difference between the development levels of the districts. By creating a 2nd degree districts in the rear zone, and integrating them with the secondary roads, we try to decrease the difference

After 1/ 100 000 scale project, we study on 1/ 25 000 scale master plan and try to make our previous decisions more spatial in center district ans surrounding districts. We again develop a hierarchical system by using the potentials of the area like in 1/ 100 000 plan. Beside, natural values are conserved with plan decisions and some ecological units are located. A train station and a pier are developed and a new modern city center which works with the historical center in harmony is created Treatments

our larger scale decisions. For instance, we create a train station to heart of the city and a pier in the coast, a new modern center which lay out from train station to pier, apart from historical center and a tram system. Also we try to develop eco-city principles in this area; such as, developing mixed- used urban areas (residential, commercial, industry etc. work together ),ecologically sensitive new development areas, increasing the amount of green spaces, urban agriculture, recycling areas, integration of modes etc. Along to two river and coast which are not used by native people, we try to develop public uses, recreational activities etc.

two main parks. The alley starts with station and end with pier square. The pier square is surrounded by cultural buildings; such as, opera house, music library, art faculty of the university, theatre etc. Also near the pier and station there are hotel areas for tourists, fishmongers, restaurants, workshops, cafes, recreational areas, etc. In this project we noticed that feeder vertical pedestrian roads which connect other parts of the area to the axis were missing and it was really important for this axis to work.

URBAN REGENERATION Urban regeneration is a significant issue in Turkey recently. Moreover, when the implementations in urban environment are analyzed, it is seen that, nearly all of the projects are trying to change the lifestyle, culture and customs of people. Also these projects aim to create a rent in urban environment and decrease the public places in cities. I try to draw something to criticize these last circumstances.
