Fur thermore, the disser tation addresses to reimagine the fac tor y, in terms of its form, func tion and mechanism and debates over articulating the factory into urban organism. With the respect of the research, modular production method with vertical organization is going to be debated for possible factory design proposed as a pilot factory project, particularly for Audi AG.

A shared platform for Designers + Workers + Customers +Robots A hybrid, clean, small factory back in the city: mixed-use providing an exciting mixture of uses; flexibility allowing for the usein most demand at the time to get ahead; and smallscale enabling to locate building in the city.

T

he development of industry has stimulated the formation of the factory. In new era of industry, ‘Smart Factory’ has become a vision that deals with cyber physical systems. Today’s rectilinear, flat shed and stable factory typologies cannot meet the requirements of the future. Futuristic trends are seeking apropos factory designs, fictionalizing the changes and incorporating the change into its environs. In this regard, factory as a considerate industrial amenity to ecological cycle, is disposed to be included into the life cycle of urban context with its cleaner high-tech manufacture methods. This connotes the possible return of the factories to cities in the future. The lack of land area in dense urban fabric, environmental concerns, economic issues and physical restrictions meet in the common denominator to shape the flow and its form vertically. This project aims to reimagine the factory, in terms of its form, function and mechanism and debates over articulating the factory into urban organism. With the respect of ongoing research, the project has been shaped according to modular production method with vertical organization, particularly for Audi company.

What is needed for the future is to invent alternatives to linear assembly methods and design spaces where flexible plan schematics that can be completely responsive to rapid changes. It is important that in a workable environment, the employees, workers, designers and robots have relationship with each other. To create an open environment for cooperation and experience exchange between supplier and customer is so essential that can happen in the city (Henn 2016). High- tech industry would be added to the urban fabric with its new identity; flexible, hybrid and smaller. An economical model, micro factory retailing concept ensures flexibility in necessary adaptations, multiplicity of functions, reduced oversupply, shorter lead times, new contact practices with customers, availability of skilled labor, increased social cohesion, and suitability to customized economy (Orsato and Wells 2004). The multiple small retail factories need to be located in the strategically chosen cities. Berlin is the number one option with its multicultural characteristic. A hybrid factory, whose concept consists of retail and cultural facilities, can host so various activities and becomes first example of the clean factory figure in the city. Berlin is the best location to situate a factory as an energy point. The transportation web is the crucial point for the selection of the area for a factory.

The site is located between two green areas. Behind city park, there will be a mixed use project including residential and office uses. In this project, the “factory” concept is redefined as more public phenomena than used to be before. Most of the factories were closed to public, sometimes literaly with fences back in time. However, the meaning of the factory is changing and it is becoming the part of the city. For this reason, the mass should not block any passage, instead, it should welcome all people and create a new gathering place in the city. A factory symbolizes ‘producing or making’, and now it will be not just a product which is

Transition through building is possible on different levels. To create these passes, site is cut through into park directions and creates another public areas with stairs and ramps. From road to canal, people walk through building and reach a staircase towards canal. Along the canal, there is a promenande which has bike connection to the site. To ease the connection to the building, a bridge into the platform has been designed over the canal.

Vertical Elements make available to connect all floors to each other to ensure the work flow. Besides, vertical elements itself transforms a showcase or transparent process for visitors to make them engage with the production or the product before and after manufacturing. Smart, computed vertical material storage saves the space for other functions with its 1109 m3 volume and serves only to assembly and material storage floors. Automated vertical car stacker is a

transparent showcase in middle of building, while showing itself outside of the building, and offers connection between vehicle testing area to delivery area. Car lift which could be seen from outside, carries the painted SKD car body from material storage to assembly floors, but at the same time available to all floors. Drone zone is designed as cylinder volume which has OLED transparent screen surface to be informative inside of the building.

Audi U.P. embodies modular and vertical elements. Assembly stations are the modular part of building complying with modular assembly method. This element put in an appearance on assembly floors and are able to change, with relative ease, availing itself of the opportunity of smart flooring. These stations are going to be marked with led light lines on the floor to navigate the robots and automated guided vehicles. Vertical Elements make available to connect all floors to each other to ensure the work flow. Besides, vertical elements itself transforms a showcase or transparent process for visitors to make them engage with the production or the product before and after manufacturing. Audi U.P. is a hybrid factory building based on micro retail factory economic model which consists of four different categories of functions: Technical Area, Assembly, Retail, and Culture. It assumes that this kind of factory with its minimum 40 stations and 8 back-up stations can supply vehicles ranged from automobile to e-bike. In this project, the “factory” concept is redefined as more public phenomena than used to be before. Most of the factories were closed to public, sometimes literally with fences back in time. However, the meaning of the factory is changing and it is becoming the part of the city. A factory symbolizes ‘producing or making’, and now it will be not just a product which is produced, but also new ideas. That’s why the factory creates pedestrian and bike friendly passages and encounter space through building and generates permeability.

he Sculpture park is in nature and makes so strong relationship between sculptures and nature. Nature itself is so dominant in the site. You no longer feel like you are in urban context. Then, you focus only sculptures and you experience the sculpture with its alive surroundings. Because of deciduous trees the scenery is changing in different season and the sunlight filtered through the leaves impact the appearance of sculpture. And accordingly experience changes. In this project, the aim is to create a permenant exhibition space with sense of outside (nature) while inside. To create this natural atmosphere, the trees are taken as a main element of the pavilion. One flat roof without closed space could keep the visual connection between outside sculpture and inside sculpture. This roof is also for shelter purposes to protect visitors and some sculptures from rainy conditions. The ground design follows the same principle with roof. The pavilion stands not so visible from far away, it is seen as a part of nature.

Placement of sculptures in nature related to visual connection.

Connecting two paths; one of which is connected to glass pavilion and the other is connected to Villa Waldfrieden. Creating visual connection with first green part and ‘points of view’ sculpture by Tony Cragg.

Space packing; finding a proper module to create a continuous surface between trees.

Creating base with hexagons; some parts are defined as sculpture display area and around designed as seating area for visitors.

Space covered for creating a pavilion and trees which stand in pavilion. Creating shelter; the main element of the pavilion which provide protection from rain.

Different heights for different sizes of sculptures.

Placing columns in hexagon base in terms of location of trees; columns with different sizes defining the different heights in pavilion.

Adding the roof surface; duplicating surface base hexagons and creating frames which has different thickness increasing from the center to the edges. The frames cover the glass material,so the center parts take light in more.

The Sculpture park needs some separate shelters for visitors because of rainy condition in Wuppertal. These shelters are designed as pieces of pavilion. The shelter has the same principle with pavilion as it has a tree-like column and roof structure designed with hexagonal modules. In this way, the shelters can be attached to pavilion to make it wider for some special exhibitions if it is needed, and they can be detached later on. They can be placed different areas in the park. These shelters may also have sculpture protection purpose.

6 or 9 meter high column which has hexagonally placed curvy strips from bottom to top, tied with hexagon wood frames and connected to hexagon modules at the roof.

9 meter high column which is a combination of three hexagon based columns, at the roof connection, has hexagonal frame with hollow to let tree pass through.

he Sculpture park hosts some events and festivals during a year. The park needs a place for small events such as lectures, dinners and small music sessions. This time the pavilion should not be in the middle of trees but still should keep the connection with nature. The appropriate place to locate such pavilion is one of the green areas. I choose the second green which is close to the end of the park. I want to locate two pavilions into different places to provide different events every corner. Event pavilion requires an enclosed space and seating arrangements for visitors. It is shapen around these two basic elements. The structure is a densely packed group of hexagonal cells made of wood. These cells’ sizes change according to surface shape. At the center openings are smaller than edges. There is an attraction point at the center which varies the sizes of cells and openings. The surface of the roof is covered with wooden frames which could be controlled to open and close, related to event types. The hexagonal frames have two parted movable covers. Openable frames to control light inside according to events; some events such as lectures need light control inside as dark space.

Each pavilion need different amount of light inside the place. This control can be applied with wood shading system. Natural light control with wood cover panels, which are placed in hexagon cells, electrically controlled system. Covers located on the center part where lectures and events will take place. At entrance parts and edges, there are frames with glass profile without any cover which provide always natural light inside. Also openable profiles create nature atmosphere in the pavilion when it is open. Visitors while siting inside they can even see sculptures around through open cells.

“Hamburg is located in the middle of a one-of-a-kind waterscape. Here, life in harmony with the water is possible. Proximity to nature is a major gain in quality of living. Seeing the water spells quality of life for almost every local.” (Hamburg - Quality of Life in a waterside Metropolis)

S

t. Pauli Landungsbrücken is one of the touristic hotspots of Germany’s second largest city Hamburg. Nowadays the piers of St. Pauli is just a jetty for harbour tours and some public boat traffic along the river Elbe. But the spot in neighborhood to Hamburg’s most vibrant district St. Pauli and next to the famous fish market is still an attraction for tourists from all over the world. The site is a disparate mixture of protected monuments like the “Landungsbrücken” and the entrance to the old tunnel underneath the river (Old Elbtunnel), insignificant harbour buildings, parking lots, bus-stops and beach bars.

49

The problem of the area are being less connected, having less social activities and less opportunity to meet with water. Most importantly, lack of contuinuty on promenades. Therefore, the project begins with creating a promenade.

50

In dictionary, promenade means; “is a long, open, level area, usually next to a river or large body of water, where people may walk” or “often abbreviated to ‘(the) Prom’, was an area where people-couple sand families especially-would go to walk for a while in order to ‘be seen’ and be considered part of society”.

In Hamburg, Promenade is important as an element which provides people to meet with water and enjoy it. Promenade is a way to meet with water and is a stage for the people as a society member to present themselves. To create continuous and accessible two-leveled walking way along the Elbe River would be a solution for the current situation.

What does the area need? Link/ Connection / Continuity / Accessibility / Passage / Connection to paths / Connection to Elbe / Visibility / Social life and activities / Social relations / Sharing culture / Vibrant public spaces

The connection to Elbe is the subject ignored in the current situation. The jetty part is the only part the activities take place, although there is more adequate space on the land. The connection is thought as visiblity of Elbe and accessibility to the piers. This visual connection with Elbe is provided from all activity places.

is arranged according to the height of flood protection walls not to block the river view. From higher promenade, the eye connection spots are created. Almost from every spot, Elbe and historical buildings are visible and creates vista points.

The coastline of Elbe River is designed as Promenade and the place attached to the line designed as public sitting area. This area have so many purposes such as, sitting, lying, usage as table and stage purposes. The seats are contunious and consist of three levels diffirentiate along the river. The height of the seats

One of beach bar is located near Elbe river, next to pumping station building. This beach bar has stair-like sunbathing place with full of sand going closer to Elbe water. This place is the most connected place with Elbe. The other beach club located on a higher part connected to the higher promenade, having panoramic view of Elbe. The connection level is visibility this time.

The area has irrefutable relation to other promenades around. The most famous one is public staircases and the promenade together designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. It was purposed to be as a “walk-through sculpture” . The opposite side of the Elbe shore fills with Fisch Market which is highly popular and open only on Sundays. These two different and dominantly important elements of the shore needed an element to provide a bridge between. The area is designed as a continuous promenade which bounds two different parts of Elbe shore. The angled lines resemble to public staircase and looks like the new area is the continuation of area.
