CHURCH CONSTRUCTION UPDATES With the main church already finished and with our community continually growing, here are some updates regarding the completion of our parish church facilities. • Architect Dom Galicia has submitted the schematic architectural plans for the Sacristy with restrooms, and the Baptistry, which will be located near the right and left exits of our Church, respectively. The plans are currently being reviewed by the Construction Committee and the estimated cost for the construction of these facilities will be confirmed when drawings are finalized. • The roofing of our Archbishop’s Walk still has to be completed. We are awaiting funds from generous donors. The estimated amount to complete the roofing is Php380,000. Indeed, a growing church is also an ongoing journey of a community!

Message from the editor A milestone can be an indicator of where a person can be now. It can also help define where one wants to go and how far or near away a person can be from his/her goal. One mile to go means you are almost there. 10 miles away might mean that you still need to move on further to get where you want to be. For Tugon, the 10 years have been filled with new experiences, new friends and lots of opportunities. This means that we’ve released 40 or more issues so far with content ranging from simple topics like how we revere saints to something controversial like pornography. There have been a lot of challenges along the way, but with it comes the support that we get from God and Tugon’s readers. We all know what “Wi-Fi” is for. If you pronounce it as ‘Y-Fee’, the husbands are reminded of their ‘wife’. Likewise, the meaning of WiFi, which is ‘wireless fidelity’, comes as a reminder of that important ingredient in happy marriages: free or unbound, yet faithful; faithful, yet free or unbound.

With this note, Chit Perez started our workshop on the formation of Lectors. It is a series of topics which have been developed and applied in the Diocese of Antipolo and Beverly Chapel (since there was a time when Beverly was still considered part of the Parish of the Immaculate Concepcion Antipolo or familiarly known as Antipolo Cathedral). The workshop is a comprehensive course on personal preparation and delivery of the Scriptural Readings and Psalms at Holy Mass. It

includes discussions for deeper understanding of the scriptures that we read; thereby giving a deeper meaning of the ‘Word of God’ in our own minds and hearts. Thus, undergoing these workshops are valuable to the new, as well as to those who have been Lectors for years. The workshop shall be a regular activity in the Ministry of Lectors’ monthly meeting every last Saturday of the month at 8 am. The better we understand, the stronger we love. The stronger we love, the more we stay faithful, even if unbound. Wireless fidelity.

Catholics?

Q- Tell me: Why do Catholics harp on the Year of the Laity? A- Because we sense the urgency, the church is hurting - the nation is hurting. We are beset by moral decline, conflict, crime, poverty, and disease. We cannot sleepwalk through these dark times and not address our ills and pains, nor can we go on focusing on evils that we condemn more than the good we can do. The laity who form the bulk of the Church must be roused to help bring people back to God and build a better world. Q- Formidable task! Do you really believe the laity will listen and respond? A- We see this year also as an affirmation of HOPE. There is hope because the risen Lord assures us not only of the future but also of the present, like NOW. Amid the gloom surrounding us, we see glimmers of light in honest cab drivers, police and businessmen, tax-payers, ‘true’ public servants and many other upright citizens out there. In

many parishes, hope galvanizes small moving forces for good, headed by dedicated and caring shepherds, assisted by ordinary men and women who evangelize, teach, heal and give - striving to live and share Christ. Too few, too few! Imagine the impact of thousands more of enlightened and enlivened laity who choose to join the Godly mission of social transformation! They will brighten first their own little corners then “venture beyond the altars and church yards” (Tugon March-May 2014), and on to the outer wider world. We need to hope. WE DO HOPE. Q- Admirable optimism. Is it for real? A- It’s borne of our own experiences. See, TUGON celebrates its 10th Anniversary this year. Recalling our initial, nervous steps a decade ago and seeing the distance we have come, we thank God. We hope to continue to record parish events and activities offer reading fare that would inform, form, transform, and help. Other ministries realize their own hopes and we trust that Tugon contributes

God changes the world in us, with us, and through us. We are His mouth, His hands & feet, His agents for positive change.“

My pilgrimage to Lourdes, France. I have always been a devotee of our Blessed Virgin Mary; and a trip to that place of her famous apparition in a Grotto in Lourdes was the highlight of all my Pilgrimages. I celebrated Mass in the Grotto. I traced and prayed the Stations of the Cross. I went to Confession to a French priest and immersed myself in

the holy bath. It was, as a whole, a real God-experience. I encountered God, our Blessed mother and myself in that Pilgrimage.

Pinaka-mahalagang realization/ learning while traveling: That the faith is really alive! I was amazed by how the faith is lived and practiced in the different places I have been. Like during the WYD celebrations in Rio de Janeiro, I was kind of overwhelmed at how they were doing their celebrations. Through the way they practiced their faith one would think that Christ was Brazilian. I mean, the faith really found a profound expression in their very culture. I just realized just how alive the faith is — that it can be lived, realized, practiced everywhere and still not lose, but even enhance, the essence of Christianity.

During the overnight vigil with the Pope in the WYD festivities in Madrid, around midnight, a “tornado” suddenly developed near the place where a million and half pilgrims were holding vigil. We, the Antipolo delegation, just huddled together even as the wind and rain overturned some of the makeshift structures in the area. As a result we were not able to receive communion during the Mass of Pope Benedict because all the 1.5M hosts that were supposed to be consecrated got soaked.

Pinaka-favorite country visited: France, because of Lourdes and the other Pilgrimage sites there.

Pinaka-favorite place to unwind:

Very few people know this but I am really an introvert. So after a long and tiresome week, my favorite place to unwind is in my room, where I just read, browse the Net and watch TV. But then, if you mean a real place where I unwind, I go to Tagaytay--my home for 6 years during my Theological studies. continued on page 5
