let’s take a look at outdoor learning Awarded full accreditation for the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge Scheme, our multi-activity courses have been recognised for their emphasis on safety, enjoyment, education and self-development. We know learning can be adventurous and using an outdoor environment can effectively transfer into a wealth of knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours. Research suggests the outdoors is where many children like to be the most. By allowing children the freedom to be outside, we reinforce their emotional well-being enabling them to embrace the natural world independently. Our centres provide an open environment allowing children to develop freely, experience natural phenomena, and pursue a desire to engage in lifelong learning. By helping children to participate with physical activity now they are more likely to remain active in later life. It is by embracing physical activity, our outdoor adventure programmes promote health and well-being. This can translate to creative thinking, productivity, good interpersonal relationships and resilience in the face of adversity. Providing high quality outdoor learning experiences, a JCA adventure is a chance to participate in new and exciting activities and develop new skills. Our aim is to inspire children to achieve at their highest level. This means ensuring our experiences allow for all children to access the activities and their outcomes. Inclusion is therefore high on our agenda to maximise the positive impact outdoor experiences can have on children. By demonstrating and reinforcing respect for the natural environment, we are confident in providing both a memorable and fun experience.
key outcomes from a jca adventure We have considered the provisions set out by organisations in the development of outdoor learning to shape the activities and experiences we offer across our selection of JCA activity centres. While each centre has its own specialisms, all provide the opportunity to achieve the following ten key outcomes:
1 Health and well-being 2 Social and emotional awareness 3 Awareness of the environment 4 Skills specific to activities 5 Individual attributes 6 Life skills 7 Self-motivation and desire for future learning 8 Future prospects 9 Holistic development of character 10 FUN!
We aim to achieve each key outcome by working with a number of quality indicators to ensure all children are provided with the best opportunities to develop during their outdoor adventure with us. Each outcome can be dissected and measured against the level children work to and realistic attainable targets set out within their learning.
How do we sustain the quality and effectiveness of our JCA programmes?
JCA understands the importance of progressive formal education experiences sitting alongside experiences in non-formal settings. As such we firmly believe a tailored outdoor learning experience can positively impact on attainment. Our JCA instructors are not only trained on the specific activities we offer at our adventure centres but are selected for their understanding of the influence a residential experience and their own interpersonal skills can have on shaping a learning experience for school groups. Collaboration between teachers and JCA instructors allows for children to develop holistically by understanding the individual and collective needs of the group. The JCA adventure in its entirety not only focuses on developing skills but also attitudes by fostering positive sustainable behaviours. By increasing resilience to new situations and environments, children are in a stronger position to act independently and solve problems.
At a glance:
• We recognise the positive impact of outdoor learning and make it a reality. • Our JCA instructors work to inspire and help children learn and achieve. • Our JCA team can collaborate with teachers to better understand the needs of their group.
• Inclusion – opportunities for children, no matter their circumstances.

the magic of condover hall
Travel back to the exciting Elizabethan era with a visit to Condover Hall, one of the most outstanding manor houses in England and JCA’s flagship centre. Set in Shropshire’s rolling countryside and surrounded by beautiful gardens even Queen Elizabeth I would have approved of, guests experience a tremendous sense of awe as soon as they pass the gates. The manor has easy motorway access and provides a secure environment to visiting school groups with 24-hour JCA staffing. Within the grounds of Condover Hall we have constructed a wide array of outdoor and indoor adventure activities. Chosen to challenge, motivate and excite participants of all ages, activities will support individual and collective development as fears are foiled and boundaries pushed. Featuring high and low ropes courses, a high aerial trek, and a series of land-based activities; children can fly through the trees like Robin Hood on our zip line or develop the pinpoint accuracy of Will Scarlet’s riposte on the fencing piste. New for 2016, Condover Hall now features its own activity and nature lakes. Hosting an exceptional range of water-based activities, school groups can develop their confidence on the water with equipment geared to the junior market. With an unrivalled choice of facilities and activities, the hardest decision to make at Condover Hall is what to do first!
meet the team - Andy, General Manager FAVOURITE MEMORY OF YOUR TIME AT JCA From seeing the achievement on a guest’s face once they have overcome a fear and jumped off of the trapeze to listening to a new staff member talk to their friends about what a fantastic experience they have had working with their first group, the last 5 years have been full of lovely memories. It’s also been great to have had the chance to meet guests and staff not just from the UK but from all over the world. In the time that I have been with JCA we have given a memorable and life changing outdoor experience to over 125,000 young people. BIGGEST CHALLENGES One of the biggest challenges to date has been securing planning permission for investments which would benefit both staff and guests at Condover. This included the new aerial trek and watersports lake. However the biggest challenge to date was when I first started with JCA in Dec 2010 with only an office space and a mobile phone. My task was to create a fantastic adventure centre at Condover Hall ready of the grand opening with Ben Fogle and Dame Kelly Holmes in just 6 months. We were laying the last flag stone at the restaurant entrance as the first guest arrived, so we made it... just! HOPES FOR THE FUTURE We continue to invest in enhancing the outdoor experience for our guests and staff to enjoy what JCA offers so hopefully they can continue to take away memories which will stay with them for life. Always looking for new and innovative activities for our centres, we will seek out further opportunities to deliver high quality outdoor learning. I also look forward to the opportunity to be able to invest in more centres to increase our offering to guests allowing them to experience JCA wherever they live in the UK. More locations will also mean our staff will have a greater opportunity to develop into future centre managers. INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE: When I wanted to go and work for an American camp during my gap year, my mum said, ‘Oh you may not like that, why not try it in England first’. 22 years later I’m still working and living at adventure camps and absolutely love it!
I was captured in my first year working at an adventure centre. I had always wanted to have a job which would enable me to help kids who may not have had some positive elements to their childhood and I realised that working at adventure centres, without even knowing it, I played a part in giving a child an amazing experience for the time they were with us, whatever their background. I really believe in what the experience gives the children and staff alike; independence, confidence, a sense of achievement and memories that would last a lifetime. Upon realising all of this, I decided I wanted to work my way up in the industry. ABOUT ME: I very much believe in living life to the full and making the best of everything I do. I enjoy travelling and more recently cooking; however I think the latter is because after over 20 years of working and living on adventure centres I actually quite like not having someone cook for me! Aside from this I enjoy the media and in my spare time I’ve helped out in various TV shows, including The Apprentice, X Factor, and a few years back I was the person who got to stand next to Ant and Dec and press the play button to start the music for the acts on the Britain’s Got Talent auditions. FAVOURITE JCA ACTIVITY & WHY: I think we have lots of great activities at JCA but for me the best is archery. This is because most children start the session by mostly missing the target and yet by the end a good majority are hitting the target and even getting gold. Not only are the sheep in the field behind relieved, but the incredible sense of accomplishment is fantastic to see.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
ACTION-PACKED ACTIVITIES THAT ENCOMPASS THE GREAT OUTDOORS – THIS IS WHAT MAKES A JCA ADVENTURE SPECIAL. From the Elizabethan roots of Condover Hall and our grounds that embrace both literature and the arts of this period, children can step back in time to the years of Robin Hood brought to life in the writings of the influential 16th century playwright Anthony Munday. Discover Robin’s pinpoint accuracy on the archery range; master the art of fencing like Will Scarlet; and climb high above the treeline on our new high aerial trek. Learning and adventure are rolled into one within the grounds of Condover Hall.
environmental explorers ENVIRONMENTA L EXPLORERS
BODY ZORBING ARCHER Y BUGGY BUILDING
Even Robin Hood and his Merry Men had to know their environment. Add an environmental element to your visit and increase your student’s understanding of the natural world. Your students will use all their senses to explore the local environment and tap into the wonders of nature. Collaborating as a team, children will be able to get their hands dirty as they dive into the science of the habitats found on-site.
archery
Known as the most skilled archer amongst his Merry Men, Robin Hood was the green man whose ability would allow him to triumph in the Sheriff of Nottingham’s famed Silver Arrow contest. Using equipment geared to the junior market, children have the chance to engage their eagle-eye on our Condover Hall targets. Developing self-discipline, concentration and co-ordination skills, students can unleash their inner Robin of Loxley. Ensuring the highest levels of safety, students are supported by qualified JCA instructors with an Archery GB instructor award senior leader on hand.
cirque du jca
CIRQUE DU JC A 8
The role of the jester developed in the Elizabethan era as many took to the theatre to perform in stage productions. In the image of Queen Elizabeth I’s favourite jester, Richard Tarlton, children have a chance to unleash their creativity while developing concentration and co-ordination as they master the arts. This session of circus tuition includes devil sticks, plate spinning, diabolo juggling, plus many more.
aerial trek
NEW to Condover Hall, our aerial trek challenge gives children the chance to take on an exciting adventure ropes course. Meander through the vine ropes like Robin’s merry Men, bridge the high net, and crawl through the aerial tunnels as children of all abilities clip into the safety lanyards and take to the circular obstacle course. Take in the breathtaking views of Condover Hall while enjoying the exhilaration of overcoming personal trials. Build confidence, improve co-ordination skills and develop teamwork as the groups support each other through this exciting activity.
INITIATIVE EXERCISES DANCE MANIA high ropes Take to new heights on the high ropes course designed to help groups work together to overcome various challenges on the ground and at a height in a safe, controlled environment. A favourite with many schools, children will be eager to imagine storming the castle of King John with Robin Hood by their side. Featuring many different elements including abseiling, the leap of faith, zip wire and a power fan descender, groups will be part of the ultimate adrenaline rush building upon confidence and team cohesion.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES kayaking
Exploration during the Elizabethan period also took place on the high seas. Luckily for school groups, the calm waters of Condover Hall’s new activity lake located just a 5 minutes’ walk from the main hall provide the ideal location to develop kayaking skills. Using equipment suitable for juniors, children will be guided through capsize and paddle skills along with instruction on the importance of keeping safe on the water. Developing teamwork and communication skills, children’s confidence on the water will be enhanced through guidance from qualified JCA instructors and team games.
raft building
RAFT BUILDIN G 10
The Elizabethan era was also seen as the golden age of pirates. Working in small teams, children will have the chance to build their own raft. Under the guidance of a qualified JCA instructor, children will use ropes, wood and oil drums to construct their own mini vessel that will be good enough to race other teams on Condover Hall’s activity lake.

‘Kind faces greeted us and our children on arrival and this great first impression set the scene for the whole stay. We all thoroughly enjoyed the way the team leaders interacted with the children, helping them overcoming their worries and enjoying the challenges. The night and lunch time staff were excellent, making sure we had all we needed. Our expectations were exceeded in all areas, great centre, very happy!’ Deykin Avenue Junior and Infant School
sensory trail
Trust was a rare commodity in the Elizabethan era with many treading carefully to avoid the wrath of The Faerie Queen. The sensory trail is a great activity to support children in building trust amongst their peers and heighten communication skills. Leading participants over and around obstacles, children take turns to lead the way the Condover Hall’s dedicated sensory trail.
orienteering It wasn’t only in the stories of Robin Hood where outlaws would need excellent navigational skills to find their hideouts deep in the forest. Elizabethan pirates also had to ensure they were able to lead their crew between two marked points. A challenging activity exercising both the body and mind, orienteering will require children to concentrate, communicate, and work together as a team. Children will learn techniques and map reading skills such recognising scales, keys and grids through specific games and exercises. This activity can be carried out in pairs or as individuals to form a race amongst peers.
survival
A popular plot in the story of Robin Hood was the battle of wits between the hooded man and King John. Children will have a chance to develop their own survival skills deep in the bush of Condover Hall through instruction on constructing an overnight bivouac, building shelters and gathering dead wood for a campfire. Given a disaster scenario, pupils need to quickly establish priorities, work as a team and make some important decisions, before putting their survival skills theory into practice. Children will also learn about making a fire, Morse Code and Bivi Building.

INDOOR ACTIVITIES
At JCA we like to make the most of the outdoors as much as possible, but at Condover Hall the adventure can continue within the manor house!. With a number of state-of-the-art rooms set up to provide equally engaging activities, Condover Hall has all your school group needs to support children in meeting the aims of your trip. Developing upon the essential skills children should acquire in early education, our indoor activities sees groups support each other through communication, motivation and leadership.
Laser conquest
LASER CONQUES T DANCE STUDIOS
Laser Conquest is an exciting game of strategy that takes part in either an inflatable maze or the woods behind Condover Hall. The game is much like paintballing, but without the pain and mess! Teams use a ‘phaser only’ laser tag system which is fun, intuitive and spontaneous, and there is a chance to get involved with up to 13 different fast-paced games. The activity develops children’s abilities to work as a team, and the nature of laser tag brings your students together to conquer goals. Participants are able to play in teams, as individuals or take on the challenge as a group.
laser maze
LASER MAZ E
Laser Maze encourages participants to listen, understand and respond appropriately. Children will need to enter stealth mode as they enter the fog-filled room and negotiate their way through the laser beams without setting off the alarms. Reach the control box and disarm before ‘detonation’ to accomplish the mission. Our JCA instructors will introduce different levels of difficulty and trust within the group. Laser Maze is normally played in tandem with the Grid of Stones.
GRID OF STONES tunnelling room
TUNNELLING ROOM 12
Children can make their way through our indoor ‘Tunnel System’ that truly allows them to explore and challenge their inner strength. Supported by JCA instructors, children can crawl into the darkness, search for clues and work closely as a team to guide each other out.
EVENING ENTERTAINMENT
If you’ve still got the energy at the end of the day, so have we! The fun continues into the evening, where we offer a range of evening activities to keep everyone entertained right up until bedtime. From the obligatory campfire where children can share stories under the stars to seeing teachers bust their disco moves at the silent disco, there is plenty to enjoy after the sun goes down.
giant cluedo
There is an air of mystery around Condover Hall with gargoyles peeping out from corners of the gardens and the legend of Queen Elizabeth’s jester sitting in the grounds just waiting to entertain. The mystery continues as groups take on a game of giant Cluedo. Requiring good communication and problem solving, children will be set a scenario before visiting different locations within the grounds of the Hall to complete a number of games and tasks to gain clues. By the end of the challenges, each team will be able to work out which character committed the crime, in which location and with which weapon.
G IANT CLUEDO CAMPFIRE
league toppers Engaging the mind, League Toppers will see children use problem solving skills and ingenuity to complete a series of challenging tasks and puzzles. Working together as a team, children aim to gather as many points as possible to see their team top the league tables. Working their way from one point to another, the race is on to challenge for top spot.

sailing
SAILIN G 2-3 day courses are available for those wanting to develop their sailing skills!
KATAKANUIN G KAYAKING CANOEING 22
Catch the wind and glide through the water in our excellent Topaz dinghies, perfect for beginners. A great introduction to this growing sport, our sailing dinghies are ideal for children to build confidence and take to the sport quicker on our shallow 12 acre lake. For those looking to develop their skills further we also offer the opportunity for children to spend 2-3 days on a course to achieve national accreditation in dinghy sailing (stage 1 and upwards). A specialist and qualified watersports instructor will be provided for this activity on a ratio of 1:8 children.
katakanuing
We may well be discovering the next Ellen MacArthur as children take to the water in our custom-built miniature catamarans. Working in synchronisation as a team of 6, children will need strong communication skills to cross the lake to the opposite shore. Paddling the KataKanus upstream, the hard work will pay off on the return with the current lending a helping hand. Providing an insight into life on a catamaran, this activity is a favourite with schools placing an emphasis on teamwork and fun.
canoeing
Paddles up as children develop their confidence on the waist-deep lake before exploring the surrounding waterways of the British countryside. Full safety gear and instruction is provided, including the key fundamentals of launching and landing; forward and backward paddling; stopping; forward and reverse sweep strokes; stern rudder; and how to capsize safely. Kneeling or sitting in an open-decked canoe, a specialist watersports instructor will be provided for this activity on a ratio of 1:8 children.
YGNAISED R ECO
R
CANOEING AND KAYAKING – WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? Ever a little puzzled when it comes to reading about canoes and kayaks? You’re not alone with those new to watersports trying to decipher the critical differences between the two. CANOES – Essentially the primary difference lies with the paddle. A single-blade paddle is used whether it is an open canoe (OC) or a closed cockpit canoe (usually seen on slaloms or white water rivers). The type of canoe in use generally determines whether the paddler is kneeling or sitting. KAYAKS – Paddlers will use a two-blade paddle and be seated in the cockpit of the kayak. You may notice a ‘spray deck’ which seals up any gaps in the cockpit. Kayaks aren’t always single person structures and can be modelled to hold four paddlers in a sprint race.
stand up paddle boarding
Stand Up Paddling (SUP) is an easily accessible sport suited to the calm and shallow waters of our Croft Farm lake. Standing on a board similar in shape to a surf board and using a paddle to navigate, SUP provides a full body workout requiring both balance and determination. Using inflatable paddle boards for maximum safety, beginners also benefit from smaller boards for ease of use. A qualified specialist watersports instructor will be provided for this activity on a ratio of 1:8 children, ensuring that the children are as safe as possible whilst on the water.
windsurfing
It’s always easy to complain about the weather in Blighty but with wind being an essential ingredient of this sport there are no complaints at Croft Farm! Providing schools with a beginner’s kit and qualified instruction to support children in accessing this sport, groups are in the best place to learn the fine skills needed to control the sail and board. There are few sports that can rival the tremendous sense of achievement gained from feeling the speed and control on the water during windsurfing. Taking to our shallow lake, children can hop on and off again with ease as they gradually develop their skills.
P ADDLE BOARDING RAFT BUILDING W INDSURFING 2-3 day courses are available for those wanting to develop their windsurfing skills!
water zorbing NEW FOR 2016 is the amazingly fun water zorbing. Taking to the water in a hamster ball-like inflatable structure, children will come away not only saying they walked on water, but ran! Each zorb can carry one participant and is inflated to provide buoyancy. Providing endless laughs, water zorbing is a great way to top off your stay at Croft Farm.

LAND BASED ACTIVITIES
While our Croft Farm centre specialises in providing an unrivalled choice of watersports geared to the junior market, there are also a host of land-based activities to choose from. With opportunities for children to engage in problem solving, co-ordination, and activity-specific skills, we can also build a programme of activities tailored to your group’s needs. From firm favourites such as archery and abseiling to life skill learning experiences, including bushcraft and orienteering, the adventure continues on land at Croft Farm.
abseiling
ABSEILIN G CLIMBING ARCHER Y CIRQUE DU JCA
Taking place on our safe, purpose-built towers, children will learn to control their descent as they abseil to the ground. Developing trust in others as well as their own confidence in the ability to control their movements, additional techniques such as the ‘commando jump’ will be weaved into the children’s learning. This physical activity supports children in overcoming any fears mentally before approaching the edge of the tower with JCA instructors providing guidance and encouragement from the tower.
archery
Take to the archery range and target the golden circle under the tutelage of qualified instructors, including a senior staff member with a Grand National Archery Society (GNAS) Leader Award to ensure the highest standards of safety are met. Safety points will be covered during an introduction to archery prior to children picking up the junior or recurve bows and aiming at the 1.3m targets. Archery is a rule bound activity which aims to develop confidence and teamwork within the group as well as self-discipline, concentration and coordination skills.
bushcraft skills
BUSHCRAFT SKILL S 24
Our bushcraft skills activity may well inspire a future Bear Grylls as children are immersed in real life wilderness scenarios. Working as a team, children will have the opportunity to construct a natural shelter and safely build a fire from natural materials. Groups will also learn how to communicate effectively using emergency signals and learn about tracking techniques deep in the bush.
‘Customer service team excellent! Site staff amazing, accommodating, always polite and friendly. Thanks for making so accommodating! Children s bedrooms - no complaints; kayak and stand up paddleboard -brilliant, fencing - fab! Camp fire - staff were very aware of fire safety. Good job!’ West Oxford Primary School
initiative exercises
Various scenarios will be set up around the Croft Farm centre to encourage lateral thinking and problem solving skills. Under the guidance of an instructor, children work as a team and use their own initiative to overcome challenges. Putting their skills and teamwork to the test, groups will come up against a range of activities, including colour code-, initiative-, and maze-based games.
mini olympics Here’s the chance to become an Olympian! Our mini Olympics places an emphasis on teamwork and encourages groups to explore cultural identities through various athletic events. Taking a look at the background to the Olympics, children will also be guided through the importance of exercise and its effects on the human body. Groups will then be instructed on the correct way to hold and throw a javelin, shot putt, discus and hammer. Additional activities including the high jump will also be available where children can learn about the ‘Fosbury Flop’.
sensory trail The Croft Farm sensory trail has children support each other over and around obstacles. Blindfolded, the group will need to rely on other senses and their peers to negotiate the course successfully. Taking turns at leading, children are provided with a chance to develop communication skills and trust. A popular activity with our JCA groups – prepare to get muddy!

EVENING ENTERTAINMENT
The fun doesn’t stop at Croft Farm with entertainment running into the evening! If you’ve still got the energy at the end of the day, so have we with a programme of evening activities. Whether you choose to dive into a world of mystery with a game of Giant Cluedo that sees groups uncover clues around the Croft Farm site, crack open the science with the egg protector challenge, or go on safari to discover the site’s nocturnal community, learning and laughter continues right up until bedtime.
campfire
CAMPFIR E LEAGUE TOPPERS
A residential trip wouldn’t be complete without a campfire! The whole group can participate in singing songs or performing an act as a team to the rest of the audience. This is a great chance for participants to showcase their own talents either as an individual or within a group. Sharing stories and getting to know one another in the group better, the campfire allows children to unwind from the active and challenging day and for your group to come together and enjoy some light hearted fun before bed.
egg protector
EGG PROTECTO R DISCO NIGHT RUN AROUND QUI Z For full descriptions and photos of all the JCA activities please visit www.jca-adventure.co.uk 26
Egg Protector is a hugely entertaining activity that presents groups with a chance to invent their own egg protection device to withstand the several gruelling tests. Students are encouraged to communicate and think laterally about how to strengthen materials and estimate what might happen in different circumstances. They’ll only be provided with cardboard boxes and recycled materials to build a mechanism for their egg. It can get messy once the device is built and the active challenges begin... Whose egg will be scrambled?
run around quiz On your marks, get set, go! Switch your thinking caps on and grab your running shoes as teams compete in this active quiz. Completing a number of engaging tasks and answering as many questions as possible, teams will go head to head to conquer the quiz in the quickest time.
rest your head in croft farm’s lakeside chalets We want the whole experience at Croft Farm to be one school groups will remember for years to come. The waterside adventure continues on-site with accommodation at Croft Farm not only designed and furnished based on feedback from our schools, but with the natural outdoor atmosphere that reminds groups they are staying somewhere truly unique. We therefore offer accommodation options that are both comfortable and practical for groups enjoying the many watersport options on offer. The majority of our groups are accommodated in two and four person heated chalets, located in close proximity to the toilet and shower blocks. A popular option with schools are the recently added purpose-built Scandinavian style heated log cabins, which can sleep up to four in each. These cabins contain a living room with sofa bed, en-suite facilities, TV, fridge, microwave and also benefit from a large veranda ideal for storing wet items and muddy footwear. All of our accommodation options consider how we can bring the outdoors inside without skipping on the warmth and comforts everyone desires when it’s time for lights out. Please contact your Regional Account Manager to discuss current availability.
teacher’s corner
We understand a trip away is not only a big step for children but also for some teachers leading a residential for the first time can seem equally as daunting. To provide teachers with a rest-bite during their stay, rooms are comfortably furnished and include twin beds, complimentary bedding, tea and coffee. New for 2016 is a separate external shower and toilet unit for teachers only. Our teacher’s retreat area (pictured) offers a change of scene to the chalets, and includes comfy sofas and chairs, tea and coffee facilities. Lakeside, while the groups get stuck into their water based activities, adults can relax in front of the large screen TV in the cafe and bar area, if they choose. 27
MEET THE CROFT FARM FAMILY
There are few more committed to providing an unforgettable JCA experience than Croft Farm’s Newell family. A family-run centre since 1986, owner Alan Newell has built the Croft Farm centre up from teaching windsurfing to a few friends to a resort attracting school groups and those seeking an outdoor adventure. Working together since 2006, Croft Farm continues its long association with JCA to provide more children with the chance to engage in a broad range of watersports and land-based activities that support their growth and development. Supported by Alan’s son, Martin, and daughter-in-law, Alex, the Croft Farm centre is proud to offer the best tuition approved by the Royal Yachting Association. Holding a collective belief in providing endless opportunities to encourage participation, support children in identifying their own progress, and inspire children to pursue future learning opportunities, Alan and his team’s appetite for delivering a quality outdoor experience is as strong today as it has ever been. 28
the team that make it work
