FALL 2017 TULANE MSRED & MBA PROGRAMS EXPLORE NEW DUAL DEGREE

MSRED summer semester follows, split between a six-week real estate development internship, field study trip and MSRED coursework. Students will continue to complete required MSRED classes in the second-year fall semester, and finish with coursework in both programs during the spring semester.

YR 1

The Tulane University School of Architecture and A.B. Freeman School of Business have begun discussions to offer a joint degree curriculum leading to both a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and a Master of Sustainable Real Estate Development (MSRED).

This proposed curriculum builds on the popular dual M.Arch/MSRED degree and mirrors the MBA program’s other joint degree options, including with law, medicine, and accounting. We anticipate this offering will be attractive to MBA students looking to specialize in real estate development. We also expect interest from prospective MSRED students looking for increased business and management fundamentals.

YR 2

This joint MBA/MSRED degree will combine the two-year, 61-credit MBA program with an additional summer semester and 16 credits of MSRED curriculum. If approved, students could complete both degrees in the same time required to complete the MBA alone (two years), including courses the summer in between. Prospective students will need to apply separately to both programs. The first-year curriculum includes fall and spring semester MBA classes. An intensive

This joint degree represents an important step in our ongoing efforts to connect the MSRED program to key programs and resources elsewhere on campus. We are awaiting formal approval from the Freeman School Curriculum Committee later this semester and expect to begin offering the MBA/MSRED degree during the 2018-19 academic year.

FROM THE DIRECTOR

MSRED AT A GLANCE

Partnerships and outreach have been a key element of the MSRED program from the very beginning in 2011. Our reliance on industry professionals as adjunct faculty was a foundational decision and remains a hallmark of the program. The Field Study trips to other cities and the ULI Fall Conference both follow the same theme, connecting our current students and raising awareness of the program overall. The Directed Research class structure relies on external “clients” across the country, and more recently the GIG internship program has deepened our students’ and thus our program’s reach locally.

The joint MBA/MSRED curriculum we hope to finalize this year is an important expansion of the MSRED program’s partnerships within Tulane University as a whole. We have long collaborated with the Architecture and Preservation Studies programs within the School of Architecture, and the Real Estate Minor Summer Institute (REMSI) has engaged a number of undergraduate students across the university. We have also incorporated existing Freeman School courses into the MSRED curriculum, both as core required courses and elective options. But the MBA/MSRED degree would be a true institutional partnership. Although I do not think the number of students who choose this joint degree option will be very large—at most 2-3 in any given year—there will be benefits to both programs that go beyond those individual students. Indeed, in the past few years the MSRED program has hired current and former Freeman School faculty to teach, first a new core Real Estate Finance Course in 2015 (taught in the fall by Professor Richard Allen) and later the original Intro to Real Estate Finance course in 2016 (taught in the summer by Professor AJ Brooks). Professor Brooks will also be taking over the existing MSRED Case Studies course in Spring 2018. These partnerships often start with small steps that can take significant time, both to develop and maintain. But over time, strong relationships and a diverse network both on campus and throughout the industry have placed the MSRED program—and we hope also our students and alumni—on a solid foundation.

2017 SUMMER FIELD STUDY At the end of the summer semester, the newest class of MSRED students travel to Washington, DC and Philadelphia, PA to tour innovative projects, meet with developers and public officials, and study the interaction of key real estate issues in a real world setting. This year’s group was led by Alex Dews, director of Delaware Valley Green Building Council, and Anita Cozart, senior director at PolicyLink, who helped organize the trip and lead group discussions. Many local groups met with the students, and a cocktail reception was hosted in Washington, DC by Nixon Peabody, LLP. The full list of participating companies and organizations includes:
