at Tulane University – but for the MSRED program, Fall represents the middle. With the intensive Summer semester as a foundation, core classes in finance, economics, legal issues, and design take on more advanced topics in the Fall. Most MSRED students also take on an internship with a local industry partner in the Fall. The GIG internship program is now in its fourth year, having connected our students with

Additionally, the Urban Land Institute Fall Conference is a tradition and program highlight, this year in Boston, MA. One of our site visits on the Boston trip was facilitated by MSRED alum Nate Ardente (’14) at Redgate Capital Partners, where he worked as an Associate. Nate has since taken on a new role with MIT Investment Management Company which invests over $14 billion in assets to support the educational mission of MIT – congratulations Nate! has been doing before, but still strategically related to real estate.” Before starting the MSRED program, Alina lived in St. Petersburg, Russia, and worked in the corporate business environment. international connectivity and importance. In regard to real estate, the Port of New Orleans is important to the City because it owns more than 1,000 acres of industrial land along the City’s most important waterways. Some of this land is used by the Port itself, but a large amount is leased to private industries for various purposes. Thus, the Port’s decisions on how to employ the potential of these sites is crucial. In May 2018, the Port released a Master Plan to help guide the Ports growth over the next several decades to maximize economic productivity and sustainability. During the internship, Alina’s role started off with identifying ownership structures for various parcels within the Port’s three Parish jurisdiction. Based on this initial research, Alina conducted a feasibility analysis to determine what to do with underutilized areas, specifically with land located along the New Orleans Industrial Canal, or Inner Harbor. Alina’s involvement was important because the revisioning of the Inner Harbor is an integral part of the Port’s new Master Plan. Reflecting on her internship, Alina says, “the networking opportunities were excellent and it was a great change to jump in to the real estate industry in the Gulf Region which is crucial for me as an international student.” Alina also says, “the GIG provided a hands-on application of knowledge and a chance to see real-life challenges outside of the academic environment.”

REAL ESTATE MINOR SUMMER INSTITUTE HIGHLIGHTS This summer, a group of Tulane undergraduate students completed the Real Estate Minor Summer Institute program offered through the Tulane School of Architecture. A class of 50 students marked a substantial increase in enrollment as compared to the Class of 2016 which had 29 students. The eight-week, 16-credit program offers five courses was taught by returning fgaculty members; Vic Franckiewicz, Clay Tanner, John Huppi (MSRED Class of ’14), Michael Bosio (MSRED Class of ’14), Curtis Doucette, Thom Smith, and Annie Cambria. Brian Andrews also joined the faculty to teach the “Sustainable Urban Development” course which involves the implantation of the Urban Land Institute’s (ULI) UrbanPlan project. In addition to his academic activities at Tulane and the Louisiana State University (LSU), Brian is the Principal of Andrews Commercial Real Estate Services in Baton Rouge, LA. Major highlights of the 2018 summer included a case study competition as part of the “Fundamentals of Sustainable Real Estate Development” course led by the Program Director, John Huppi, and Faculty Adjunct, Michael Bosio. John says, “the students were each tasked with running a development feasibility analysis for a large blighted property in the City of New Orleans. Students had to conduct market research, decide on programming, and run financial proformas, before presenting their project in front of a panel of industry professionals including local estate developers and investors. The winning team consisted of undergraduate students Ben Stackel, Connor Taub, and Matthew Baum. Professor Huppi says, “the winning group did a fantastic job balancing project vision with real-world constraints. As a reward, we plan on taking the students on an aerial flight tour of the City, departing from Lakefront Airport. The flight will include a flyover of their project in addition to some unique views of many of New Orleans’ most impactful landmarks and real estate projects.”
