- Head Coach -
JIM BARNES Jim Barnes is entering his sixth season as the head coach of the Green Wave volleyball program. He was named the ninth head coach in school history on Dec. 21, 2015. In an unprecedented spring 2021 season, Tulane finished second in the American Athletic Conference West Division, owing a 7-3 mark in conference play. The Green Wave were one of four teams to appear in the second annual conference championship, coming just short of defeating RV UCF in the semifinal matchup before falling in five sets. In Barnes’ fourth season Uptown in 2019, Tulane made its second consecutive postseason appearance in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC). After finishing the regular season tied for second in the AAC West Division, the Green Wave made their way to the second round of the NIVC before finishing the year with a 22-11 record. Under Barnes’ leadership, Tulane volleyball earned a cumulative GPA of 3.49 in the 2019-20 academic year, with a 3.28 in the fall semester and a 3.70 in the spring semester. Fourteen members of the team were selected to the American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team, while the Green Wave were also one of 227 NCAA Division I women’s programs to have received the 2019-20 Team Academic Award. The 2018 season – Barnes’ third in New Orleans – was one of the most successful in his coaching career, with an 11-match winning streak in conference play sending the Green Wave to postseason competition for the first time since 2009. Tulane became the only team in conference history to have ever played in the NIVC finals, breaking seven AAC records in its season of success while recording 29 wins for only the third time in program history. Individually, Barnes earned his 400th career win in 2018, earning a 61-42 record at Tulane while going 405-310 overall in his 22nd season as a head coach. The Green Wave opened the 2017 season - Barnes’ second year at the helm - with an 11-2 record, rolling past opponents in the non-conference portion of their schedule. Tulane won two tournaments - the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Volleyball Classic and the Tulane Invitational - in its strong start to the season and finished as runner-up at the Mississippi State Tournament. Off the court, Barnes’ squad recorded its highest team GPA (3.362) since the spring of 2014. In his first season on the Uptown campus in 2016, Tulane was the most improved team in the country starting the season with an RPI of 247 and finishing at 90. The Green Wave finished fifth in the American Athletic Conference, an improvement over 11th-place finishes in both 2014 and 2015. Tulane’s 18 wins were more than the previous two seasons combined. Off the court, Barnes’ squad achieved a perfect score in the NCAA Academic Progress Rate and was recognized for ranking in the top 10 percent among all Division I volleyball programs. Barnes brought to Tulane a wealth of experience, as the Lake Charles, Louisiana, native has two decades of head coaching experience at the Division I level with stops at Lamar (1996-01), Wyoming (2002-03) and Baylor (2004-14). Additionally, Barnes was an assistant coach at his alma mater, McNeese State, for the six years prior to being named the head coach at Lamar.

TAKE YOUR
BEST SHOT AGAINST COVID-19.
In Louisiana, people 12 and older can get the vaccine. It’s safe and effective and covered at $0 on most health plans. Members of Medicare and Medicaid plans can also get a COVID-19 vaccine at no cost. The more people who get the shot, the more immunity we create in our communities. And the sooner we get back to the life we know and love here in Louisiana. Learn more at: www.brcovidsafe.com bcbsla.com 01MK7520 R08/21
