Unicharm: “We have earned the trust of Indian parents and we strive to present incredible value to them” Unicharm India, the subsidiary of Japanese multinational Unicharm Corporation, began its business trajectory in India in 2008 with the range of baby disposable diapers-Mamy Poko Pants. At present, Unicharm India is functioning in baby disposable diaper category, feminine care category as well as adult diaper category and it has recently started a manufacturing facility in Sanand, Gujarat. Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, Director at Unicharm India, shares the Unicharm growth story and takes us through how the company has increased its production capacity domestically in an exclusive interview with Mommy & Baby Times (MBT). June 27, 2019 MBT: This year marks the 11th year of Unicharm in the Indian market which is an incredible milestone, would you please take us through the business journey of Unicharm India?
Vijay Chaudhary: Unicharm India has its inception in the Indian market from 2008 and as a matter of fact, I had joined Unicharm India in the very same year. As a result, I have actually witnessed the growth of the company in India right from the pilot phase itself and my professional path is concomitant with that of Unicharm India. The company initially started with selling ‘Mamy Poko Pants’ here in the Indian market and is now operating in the baby disposable diaper category- Mamy Poko, feminine care category- Sofy and adult diaper category- Lifree. With time, we have gradually expanded our presence by establishing regional offices all across the country. Our flagship product-Mamy Poko was quite innovative for the Indian consumers which was launched in June 2009 as the first pant style diapers in India. It has been voted as the Product of the Year in 2017 & the winner of Mother & Baby Award for three years in a row (2016, 2017 and 2018). We have earned the trust of Indian parents and we strive to present incredible value to them through our products in a consistent way.

MBT: Have you made any changes in the marketing and distribution strategies that you had adopted while entering the Indian market in 2008?
VC: When we started our business, the chief goal and premise that we had was to bring the kind of products to India which can prove useful in making the lives of the consumers easier and better. We discerned that we should begin with introducing Mamy Poko Pants – The First pant style diapers in the Indian market. Since the very start, the Mamy Poko products have been based on advance innovation and we have received favourable response in terms of Indian consumer preferences along with our sturdy distribution network. We organize various awareness generation campaigns designed for mothers to educate them about the benefits of diaper usage and baby hygiene in general. Thus, such type of strategies has differentiated us from the established players operating in the Indian market since 2008.
MBT: Considering that Unicharm Corp. has business operations in more than 80 nations, what do you feel about the industry growth in the Asian market as compared to the Europe and other regions of the globe?
VC: Though it is quite evident that European market is much developed when compared to the Asian market which is still in the growing stage. However, the rate of growth is tremendous in Asia, particularly in the baby care sector and there is a combination of various factors which is fueling this growth.
MBT: What are the significant distinctive features that you have perceived in the Indian baby care market in these ten years?
VC: The size of the baby care market in India has augmented at a rapid pace since a decade now. However, the Indian baby care market has shown tremendous growth backed by increase in awareness of standardized baby care products, surging disposable income due to rising working population, along with growing number of nuclear families. Moreover, technological advancements and emergence of online platform among the parents to shop online has further intensified the boom in baby care products.
A perceptible rise in the awareness amongst the consumers regarding personal hygiene and the increasing number of working women and a rise in income are some of the trends responsible for this noted growth in the market. The Indian market, in particular, has shown significant changes in terms of consumers’ preferences, brand awareness, buying behaviour and so on. MBT: Can you elaborate little bit on the manufacturing facilities that you have in India?
We have developed and will be developing products that are ahead of the market… It is quite remarkable to consider that India has been a leading market for Unicharm for the last few years and continues to be on top priority.
VC: We have three manufacturing facilities in India, the first one is in Neemrana, and another one in Sricity and the third one is in Sanand which is an industrial area near Ahmedabad, out of which currently Sricity and Sanand factories are operational. In Sanand, we have the largest manufacturing unit for India which is spread over almost 3 lakh sq m where we had started the operations from 2018. This production unit manufactures the three brands of Unicharm India- Mamy Poko, Sofy and Lifree. We are exporting to some of the surrounding countries as well. We’ve a distribution network of more than 1000 all over the nation.
The external environment changes rapidly with time, and the customer needs in terms of baby care products are becoming increasingly sophisticated and diversified. Quick to capture these needs, we have developed and will be developing products that are ahead of the market, utilizing nonwoven fabric and absorbent material processing and moulding techniques that we have developed over the years since our foundation. It is quite remarkable to consider that India has been a leading market for Unicharm for the last few years and continues to be on top priority.

MBT: Unicharm has been actively involved with the (CSR) campaign of bringing ground-level change as it has been running various educational programs to inculcate hygiene-awareness. What do you feel about the impact you have been able to create?
VC: We are driven by the need to spread and inculcate the

awareness around healthcare and hygiene and to honour this commitment, we keep on organizing awareness campaigns around this idea. Our core philosophy “NOLA & DOLA” (Necessity of Life with Activities & Dreams of Life with Activities), contains our hope that we can provide products and services to new-born babies to the elderly. Our CSR is manifested by our commitment to achieve this aspiration through our business activities and to help resolve social issues in the process.

To give a glimpse, our CSR team conducted an awareness event on mother and baby care in 2018 which aimed at sensitizing pregnant and lactating women on maternal and child healthcare. Apart from that, there is ‘Namaste Pokochan’ which is an awareness generation campaign specially ideated for slums to educate mothers about the benefits of diaper usage and baby hygiene in general. As a result, we have been able to enlighten 3 lakhs+ mothers across 8 cities in the last 4 years so far. Also, Mamy Poko had announced an online Mommy community, #SheCaresSheShares aimed at celebrating the spirit of motherhood. We ensure that we will always stand tall to the beliefs and

VC: Mommy & Baby Fair is a very good initiative and we are quite hopeful that it would be a great opportunity for all the manufacturers and the suppliers to come together and showcase their product range. Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Buys Iconic Toy Maker Hamleys The acquisition marks the first foray of billionaire Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Industries in an overseas retail brand. May 10, 2019
T
he Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries has acquired the 259-years old British toy retailer Hamleys for INR 620 crore.
Reliance Industries, through its subsidiary Reliance Brands Ltd, signed an agreement to pick up a 100 percent stake in the toy retailer from C Banner International Holdings, a Hong Konglisted company. Currently, RIL retail arm Reliance Retail has the licence to sell Hamleys’ products in India. Hamleys, founded in 1760, was acquired by China’s C Banner International for £100 million in 2015. The global toy maker started with a single-store shop, Noah’s Ark, in 1760. Besides UK, it has stores in China, Germany, Russia, India, South Africa and West Asia. Hamleys is the oldest and largest toy shop in the world with 167 stores in 18 countries. In India, Reliance has the master franchise for Hamleys and operates through 88 stores in 29 cities. n

We stay far from harsh chemicals and it makes our product range gentle, safe to use and effective. We are the first ever brand in India to create personal care products with the concept of ‘farm to face’ where the entire range of products are made only by using natural methods and organic farm grown ingredients. MBT: What is the current market presence of the brand in India and in the international market?
RM: Currently, the company has its presence in more than 500 modern and general retail stores located in Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Chennai and Bengaluru. With time, we would be seeking to increase our market presence and we are planning to have presence in 1000 stores across the country by December this year.

As about our future goals, we will scout for tie-ups to take brand to the target market and generate more consumer awareness for organic skincare through our beauty advisors. The company is
hoping for a turnover of 100 crores by the next three years. MBT: Share some details pertaining to the certifications and the qualitychecks that bring in a sense of assurance to the customers.
RM: Our product range has been certified by ECOCERT and is USDAapproved, which are one of the most prominent and honorable certifications for an organic brand. The ‘ECOCERT’certification means that the products are certified to be eco-friendly and the products carrying this mark means that 95% of the plant-based ingredients and 10% of the total ingredients are organic. MBT: Elaborate about your participation at Mommy & Baby Fair 2019.
RM: We are really excited about the exhibition and are planning to showcase the entire range of ‘Kids’ that comprises of organic crayons, baby care kits, bathing essentials, and so on, at Mommy & Baby Fair 2019. Kunal Popat: The starting point for the company came with a very personal experience when our baby daughter Aarna was born. When we started looking for safe and quality baby products in the Indian market, there was a certain unavailability that we noticed. Our quest for good quality products for the baby brought us to the gaps in safety, design and quality in baby products. So, we came up with the vision to provide quality and safety standards certified products at an affordable price for parents. KP: Our first step in the Baby Products industry was with the category of strollers and prams followed by car seats for the little ones. MBT: Take us through a brief history of your company and what significant milestones you think R for Rabbit has achieved?
KP: R for Rabbit was started in Dec 2014 to give a complete range of perfect quality and safe baby products to the Indian parents. Now, the company is recognized and ranked second in the baby products industry domestically, delivering safe and quality products for the little ones. In the initial stage, we had started with the sales through offline and retail channel only. With the excellent response and acceptance received from our customers, we gradually extended our presence PAN India by partnering with distributors and since then, we are continually growing consistently. Beyond offline, our products are available on the online marketplaces as well.
The starting point for designing and developing a particular product/product range starts with the need and pain points of the customers so that we can bring an ideal product which effectively fulfils their needs. MBT: Elaborate on the designing and the quality-checks of the products.
KP: The underlying idea is to bring such quality baby products that make the lives of the parents easier. We design the products with assurance of safety for the child without compromising on anything

The starting point for designing and developing a particular product/product range starts with the need and pain points of the customers so that we can bring an ideal product which effectively fulfils their needs. We take feedback from our customers and our distributor/dealers and it helps us a lot in designing a product. The product goes under all the mandatory and other quality checks, then, we have attained safety certifications such as EN71, EN 1888, ECE R44/04 depending upon the category of product. R for Rabbit products are manufactured in production plant which is passed through lot of audit checks and which have got certification of Green Environment as we care for the environment. MBT: How would you outline the strengths and the USP of your company?
KP: I think the key strengths of R for Rabbit is the equation: Safety + Quality + Design + Affordability. We believe in providing safe and quality products with an ideal design and functionality so that the product is convenient to use and is liked by the cute little ones. We always strive to provide quality and functional products which are rightly priced. We follow a stringent quality check at the end of the assembly line to give safe and perfect quality product. We follow strict safety and quality standards and procedures for production to give 100% customer satisfaction.
We are planning to expand our product range… by introducing nursery segment cribs and cradles. In fact, we are seeking to make our baby care segment an all-encompassing range

MBT: What are the marketing and distribution strategies that your brand adopts to ensure its smooth reach to the customers and how do you promote your product range?
KP: In this digital age, social media platforms have become the new ground for marketing and enhancing brand awareness. Moreover, since millennial parents are more tech-savvy and are active on social media, it is easier for us to reach out to them. Apart from social media, blogging and online articles also help us for wider brand recognition. As a matter of fact, we are present on all the major online marketplaces for customers for online purchases. For online we target the entire major online marketplace to sell our products like Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal and also through our e-commerce website. In offline marketing, we follow Tier-2 distribution model wherein we have appointed distributors in each of the major cities of India who supply our products further to retail outlets and dealers to sell to our customers. Our sales team looks after and assesses the complete distribution channel. MBT: Do you intend to introduce any new product or product range in the near future?
KP: We are planning to expand our product range with careful consideration by introducing nursery segment cribs and cradles. In fact, we are seeking to make our baby care segment an allencompassing range by introducing new products. Tanya Bragg: Our flagship product, The Munch Mitt was created by Melissa for her first-born son. He was unable to hold a typical teether at 3 months old; therefore, he turned to his hands, or her hands (when available) to teeth. Sometimes Melissa would have to sit and hold teethers to his mouth for hours! In addition to this, her son had sensitive skin. All that saliva on his hands caused them to get hard and dry. His skin would crack and sometimes even bleed (especially after his front teeth cut) and he would still chew his hands. TB: With regard to future developments, we are going to make an entry into the feeding market very soon probably by the next year or so about which we are really excited and are looking forward to. MBT: Tell us something about the strengths of your company.
TB: The key strength of Malarkey Kids is our workforce which constitutes of mothers only. Since the company has been started by a mom, so, from the very beginning, the founder has only employed moms. The work timings are from 9 AM to 3 PM that has been decided according to the suitability and convenience of our employees. So, what we do is we like to drop our children off to schools and then join work in the morning and when we leave; we can go straightaway to pick them up. And if the baby of any employee is unwell, then she can bring the kid to our workplace. Our team is a tight-knit group of women who share extremely cordial relations with each other. We all very much complement each other and help out each other in various tasks.

TB: Melissa had designed ‘Munch Mitts’ herself when her baby was teething. It is quite amusing that she had started working on this product with the assistance of a shoe cobbler as he was the only one who could actually get the pattern and do the sewing in the kind of material that she had chosen. We now have a small team of competent designers who work on product design. MBT: Share some details about your manufacturing and global market reach.
TB: Our manufacturing facilities are located in China and the qualityassessment teams are constantly present at the factories to ensure the maintenance of the standard and quality of our products. We surpass all rigorous relevant standards that assure the safety of our products and that we keep up to the standards globally. The current global market presence of Malarkey Kids is in about 52 countries. The major market for us is the USA as there are over 5000 stores that sell our products in the USA alone which is an incredible feat. Sheila Cheripka, Brand Strategist at Innobaby LLC, sheds light on the history of the brand and the range of products it offers in this exclusive interaction with Mommy & Baby Times (MBT). Excerpts from the interview: January 19, 2018 MBT: How has the business journey of Innobaby been so far?
Sheila Cheripka: Headquartered in Illinois, USA; the brand Innobaby was started by two working mothers Jee Kim and Kristen Min who observed that products like stackable dispensers having various compartments were not easily available in the market. They have established and expanded the brand from a home-based business to a global juvenile brand with retail presence around the world. The founders had launched Packin’ SMART and Sleepin’ SMART at a consumer event and within the first 6 hours in the 2-day event, these products were sold out and they took orders for the remainder of the show. It made them realize that many parents faced similar challenges and they were more than elated to offer solutions that could prove useful to more than themselves. MBT: Please describe a bit about the product range of the brand.
SC: Our brand has its market presence in about 20 countries as of now. Ecleve hip seat carrier is a brand that we’re distributing and it is something which is new to the USA market, however, it’s been available in the overseas market and we’re glad to bring this product here to the USA. We have a strong distribution network in Hong Kong, Europe, Canada, Singapore, China, Australia, Thailand and Mexico. The online market presence of Innobaby is quite sturdy as well and our products are available on Nordtrom, Buy Buy Baby, and Albee baby. The manufacturing operations for the most part take place in South Korea and our warehouses are located in Illinois.
SC: The product range of Innobaby includes food storage, stainless steel tableware, items related to playing, bathing, cleaning, bedding, fashion and more. We have been honoured to receive many awards and accolades including The National Parenting Award, iParenting Award, PTPA Award, Creative Child Seal of Excellence, Cribsie Finalist amongst others. We have adorable Milo & Gabby character backpacks and bedding that was introduced a couple years ago. There is also a Dono&Dono line of children’s beddings that comes in black and white contrasting prints for a contemporary look. Premium standard fabrics are used in the product range and include bamboo muslins, cotton muslins, all-season blankets in the ‘bedding’ range.
MBT: Any development at Innobaby that you wish to highlight?
SC: We are always adding new products to our lineup. We recently introduced a Korean skincare line for baby’s that a while ago which houses a range of Shampoo, Baby Wash, Lotion, and even a Calendula Stick – all of it is made with natural ingredients and is ideal for sensitive skin, especially eczema for the babies.
We distribute a brand called Ecleve Hip Seat Carrier which allows for nine wearing options. It has a detachable hip seat which can be used separately as an infant feeding or nursing support wedge, or as extra support for heavier toddlers. When positioned correctly around the parent’s waist, it evenly distributes baby’s weight and allows parents to comfortably carry their child.
