OUTLOOK
Speak in Prioritizing Process Optimization for Sustainable Growth Sustainability drives major decisions in the current scenario. Paper being a bio-degradable solution has found easy applications and acceptance among the general public. The packaging paper segment is experiencing a huge demand surge driven by various industries. The food and beverage industry is also increasingly turning towards paper-based solutions. Although there is a lot of scope for R&D in relevance to the food and beverage industry, domestic and global companies are working passionately to find bio-degradable yet hygienic solutions. The demand surge is being met by capacity creation. A close observation would tell us that this capacity creation is coming from various sources apart from the simple addition of paper machine lines or the establishment of new plant facilities. One of the reliable methods of capacity expansion is through optimization of existing processes and technologies. It is notable that while individual decision is entirely within an organization's decisionmaking spectrum, if an industry-wide opinion were to be presented then certain considerations must be taken into account. The establishment of new capacities requires humongous investments, often beyond the operational scope of small and medium-scale organizations. However, process optimization could be implemented in installments. In fact, an upgrade could earn the scope of new optimization, and eventually capacity addition. Additionally, sustainability concerns have led conventions & pledges to transform into tariffs & policies. It is prudent to perceive that the government's future policies shall be more direct, stricter, and even punitive towards environmentally detrimental manufacturing practices. Sustainable processes can help manufacturers override the seemingly adverse waves.
The vision for this note was clear; I wanted to talk oneon-one with the readers about all that Paper Mart has to offer. I wanted to share our efforts in bringing forward this edition, the concurrent events of the industry, and a small, profound piece of personal opinion. There are various ways to achieve our targets, and mine was to ensure a connection with my readers.
Paper might be a sustainable product, the manufacturing process is however hailed to be highly resource-consuming, from water to power. However, since the onset of the 21st century, Indian paper manufacturers have worked hard to optimize their processes and make them more efficient and sustainable. The efforts have yielded favorable results, such as a drastic reduction in energy & water consumption, recovery of chemicals, process & output efficiency, odor-controlled processes, important by-product generation, etc. They have transitioned towards renewable sources for power generation, set up Co-Gen plants, and are aiming to serve the National Grid with additional power. One of the most important sustainable reforms has been farm-forestry, wherein the basic raw material for paper production, that is wood, is cultivated as a crop eliminating deforestation as a resourcing practice. Paper machine upgrades or rebuilding, enhancement of ETP processes to support the surrounding ecosystem, and integration of performance-based technology & equipment have helped in expanding the production capacity of existing machines along with making their processes more sustainable and in alignment with varied international standards and convention pledges. Digitization has been additionally helpful as database management systems, operating software, IoT, and AI, have helped mechanize the manual operations and concentrate factory management of huge plants on compact interfaces. Digitization has also brought safety and security to plant and machine operations. Process Optimization also has helped big paper manufacturers to interface their geographically distant operations with each other, and plan further expansion more connected and integrated with the existing operations. In simple terms, the four inputs, man, machine, money, and material, all have benefitted from process optimization. Furthermore, capacity can also be pursued alongside and/or in the succession of process optimization, so the eventual capacity creation is more organic, stable, and sustainable. A collective effort shall be required for sustainable growth, and process optimization can prove a reliable foundation for the Indian pulp and paper industry.

Trident Group Targets 15-20% Capacity Expansion Through Optimization
T
L to R: Mr. Naveet Jindal, CEO, Trident Paper; Ms. Neha Gupta, Chairperson of myTrident (Brand); & Padma Shri Rajinder Gupta, Chairman Emeritus of Trident Group along with the senior management of Trident Paper business launching new packaging of copier paper range.
rident Group hosted a six-day event recently, which marked as the launching pad for its new product range of a notebook series, My Choice, and revamped packaging of its existing copier paper product line. Mr. Naveet Jindal, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Paper, Energy & Chemicals at Trident Group India, shared with Paper Mart the idea behind the new product line, marketing strategy, sustainability efforts, and expansion plans of the company. He also provided an insightful peek into current trends in the paper industry, their impact, and best practices for the future. The company is targeting around 20 percent of capacity expansion through process optimizations at its mill.
Paper Mart: Congratulations on the launch of your new notebook product range. Kindly brief us about the idea behind venturing into the product segment. Naveet Jindal: Thank you. So we started with our copier paper segment in 2008, and consumers have placed immense trust in Trident's quality, service, and everything that we have
20 | Aug-Sep, 2023

offered. We have hence been able to maintain a good market share across India, with our major suppliers concentrated in the North and the NCR region. Our copier segment's success has given us the idea to vertically integrate the notebook product series, My Choice. Thereafter, we have a very good team of designers who work in our home
I•N•T•E•R•V•I•E•W textiles segment. Since My Choice is a notebook series, designing is an important part of it, for every possible customer looks for an attractive and desired design. This makes our resident designing team our USP, especially with their experience in designing for a lot of international brands. These were the two primary thought processes that enabled us to venture into the new segment.
PM: What is your pan-India marketing strategy for the new product range? NJ: In my opinion, Trident Group has always been quite aggressive with marketing and go-to-market (GTM) strategy. This is evident in our other product series, such as the copier paper segment, wherein we have tried to visually engage our customers with attractive packaging. I think we were almost the first ones to do so in the copier paper segment. So we have a similarly robust marketing strategy for My Choice as well. Although we are marketing it as a brand, we are aware that it is a commodity and not a consumer good, like a mobile phone, garment, etc. We know the impact of brand is lesser in this segment as the person buying might prefer a brand, but will not delay their purchase due to nonavailability. It is like bread, they will simply buy another brand. So it is a commoditized product and we cannot have huge marketing spending. So we have in place the basic marketing strategy, the 4P marketing strategy of the product, the packaging, place, and promotion. So the product must be qualitative and that as a commodity helps the brand create its resonance. As I already mentioned, we have worked on making the packaging attractive. Thirdly, the place is very important as only its availability at the right moment will ensure a sale. Lastly, there is promotion, towards which we

” have this event. It is a sort of step towards a reliable and robust panIndian distribution network. We have called on nearly 1,000 retailers from across India, from Kargil or Leh Ladakh to Trivandrum, and from Guwahati, Meghalaya to Jaipur. We have been trying to reach out to the distributors during these six days. So, we shall be following the basic marketing fundamentals, and I think our efforts will yield good results.
PM: Is the marketing strategy on the same lines for your copier paper product range? NJ: No, it is a bit different. Firstly, the distribution channel is different, as a person selling copier paper may not have the same zeal to sell a notebook. Copier paper is often sold in wholesale boxes, whereas notebook volumes per sale are comparatively not so huge. So there is a difference in mindset. Therefore, in addition to connecting with the existing partners, we are also trying to set up an exclusive channel. Secondly, e-commerce is not very successful for the copier segment, whereas for notebooks it can be a big game changer. So, I think these are the two aspects. For our new product range, we are also tying up with different educational institutes. It is common for schools and institutes to have their own branding, so we are exploring opportunities along with them as well. Apart from that, we are also targeting international markets. Our presence across the US in the home textiles segment will help us to reach the US market and other global markets.
www.papermart.in
Summarily, we are not leaving any stone unturned in trying to get a deeper venture into the new market. It is also mentionable that there are very few organized players across India, and we would like to take advantage and become a recognized brand in this segment.
PM: You have also revamped the packaging of your products, especially in the copier range. Please share the changes you have made and your idea behind it. NJ: We have been trying to contribute the best of our bit in terms of offering an eco-friendly product. About 15-16 ago we brought in the idea of making copier paper from wheat straw. At that time everybody was apprehensive, for the copier must be made from wood. However, we managed to create a success story and others followed that. So now we have taken another step in our copier segment. We are trying to establish a message of our closeness and connection to nature by branding our new copier segment packaging through six Himalayan flowers. They are aesthetically pleasing and we believe our customers will appreciate the lively new packaging and attractive look. This will help our customers to embrace the product they are using. They will be excited to use the product they have bought. We hope they reimagine its uses by using the product not only as copier paper but also as covers for notebooks, registers, gift packaging, etc.
PM: Trident has always been a forerunner in innovations. Recently, which innovations have you invested in or plan to do in the future?
I•N•T•E•R•V•I•E•W NJ: I think we were the first one to integrate aesthetics into the packaging, then we used the wheat straw to manufacture copier paper, which was again appreciated for not compromising on the runnability and the quality of the paper. Post-Covid-19, there has been a shift in the demand for writing and printing paper in favor of specialty segments with value-added products. Herein, paper for varied purposes is being manufactured, like wedding cards, soap stiffener paper, carry bags, cup stock, etc. The single-use plastic ban has also helped with better demand. Hence, the segment is bound to grow very quickly and we are trying to establish ourselves in it. There are a few products that we have catered to while many others are in line. We think these will help shift our percentage presence in the writing and printing segment to the valueadded segments, where we can help the customers reserve good products and services. We are also going to launch the 65 gsm copier paper, under the Enviro brand name. We are further targeting to get into a premium range of printing paper, where we would like to make our presence felt against the best in the industry.
PM: Do you have any expansion plans for your mill operations?
the last 4-5 years. Although last year's realizations were better because the costs were too high, the NSR increase was cost-linked. We are exploring outsourcing, collaborations, and partnerships, as even if we finalize a plant the project will take almost 3.5-4 years to become operational.
PM: Trident operates one of the biggest agro mills in the world, so sustainability has always been at the core of your business operations. Can you elaborate on your ongoing sustainability efforts? NJ: A very important aspect and lever of our strategy is discussing what we are going to do against what we currently do. We have actually invested hugely towards sustainability, whether through optimization, saving of water, or complying and performing better than set emission norms, etc. Recently, we put up a project where we are generating the producer gas, or methane gas, from the ETP sludge, which we use as a fuel in our energy boilers. We are currently working on handsome capex investments to target a few projects for reusing the water; decolorization of water - where water is decolorized before being reused for production or in plantations; wasteinto-wealth project - where we exploring technical upgrades to process the solid waste, or sludge, generated during paper production by reducing the moisture or change the form and then making it into a good by-product that is good for everyone, has economical value and can help us preserve resources, which are quite precious these days.
NJ: We have plans to optimize our current processes, which will help us increase our current production capacity. Recently, we upgraded one of our paper machines, which helped us to increase our current capacity by 10 percent. We have partnered with the best consultants available on the globe for the paper industry, and are targeting to add another 15-20 percent of capacity by optimizing the existing setup.
So we have an undivided focus on sustainability and it is integrated into all our operations. We are trying to get in collaboration with the best so that we are future-ready.
We are thinking of expanding for a better top line, which has been flat for
PM: In the paper industry people often comment that our per capita
22 | Aug-Sep, 2023
www.papermart.in
paper consumption is quite low. As India now officially has the world's largest population, what is your take on the statement and how do you foresee the future for our industry, especially for the writing and printing segment? NJ: As per my understanding, while we used to talk about the per capita consumption earlier, that was around 8-9 kilograms, now it is about 13-14 kilograms, the world average being 57 kilograms. So, an increase of 1 kilogram per capita consumption equated with 13.5 billion of population, it is clear that there is a humongous increase in the paper demand. This demand spreads over not only writing and printing, but packaging, tissue, various specialty grades, and various industrial grades. People are opinionated that with digitalization, writing and printing will suffer a demand decrease. However, recent studies have revealed lesser and poor quality learning through digital modes, so writing and printing might actually experience a surge. In any case, in India, for the next 10-15 years the segment will experience positive demand.
PM: What is your message or suggestion for the paper industry? NJ: The increased imports are impacting the market and things are very tough presently. However, this is also a good time to self-evaluate ourselves for global competition, which cannot be achieved through subsidized or incentive-linked growth. We will have to become capable enough to fight our way out. Being innovative can help us in this; let us embrace the ever-changing technology. We can also work on the marketing front, as we did not predict that this event would help us establish such a profound reach panIndia within such a short time. So marketing may help the industry as well.

(BSCI), promoting responsible business practices among its major vendors. The commitment is demonstrated across the wood, coal, chemicals, packing materials, imported wood pulp, engineering items, and agro-procurement practices. l
Wood Procurement: Kuantum Papers procures its entire wood requirement exclusively from Tree Outside Forest (TOF) sources. It also uses wood chips and veneer waste, which are the leftover materials of the plywood industry, for wood pulp production. The company is FSC® certified since 2011 and is committed to the compliance of raw material procurement as per the standard. It has also been adopting a long-term Farm Forestry and Fibre strategy. The strategy involves the production of sitespecific superior clones of various fast-growing and high-yielding pulp wood species, such as Eucalyptus, Poplar, Casuarina, Melia, and Subabul. The clone saplings are distributed to the local farming communities to foster future wood availability for pulp and paper production. This has enabled the company to produce 9-10 lakh superior clones, covering around 5650 acres of plantation on the farmer's land. Kuantum Papers has

l
Agro-Raw Materials and Biomass Fuel: The company sources agro-raw materials, such as wheat straw, wild grass, bagasse, and rice husk, as raw materials, as they are both sustainable and beneficial to the local farming community. As agricultural crop residue is utilized, the environment is saved from stubble-burninginduced GHG emissions and pollution. The company has a robust vendor base in different districts of Punjab and neighboring states. The procurement does not hamper other uses of wheat straw, such as animal fodder, as the company's annual requirement is only 1.1 percent of the total produce of Punjab.
l
Coal and Engineering: Kuantum's coal procurement is handled by the fuel supply agreement and eauctions, wherein it also secures the long-term availability of chemicals, packing materials, and engineering products. The supply of chemicals is accompanied by a material safety data sheet and test certificates, and mandatory transportation instructions are given to the suppliers of hazardous chemicals. Engineering items are procured from authorized dealers/distributors/manufacturers directly, ensuring adherence to quality norms and reliable aftersales service, while prioritizing energy-efficient motors, lights, and fans are prioritized.
Sustainability Beyond Manufacturing Process Kuantum Papers builds on its ESG initiatives by ensuring sustainability in operations beyond the core manufacturing processes. Opportunity for Indian Paper Industry: Paper Needs to Compete with Single-Use Plastic
The Chief Guest - His Highness Shri Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, the 27th Head & Custodian of the Erstwhile Kingdom of Mysuru, addressed the seminar, “In relation to today's seminar, for banning or moving towards alternatives of single-use plastic and plastic in general, it is indeed an honor that the seed sown so many years ago continues to aid in solving problems relevant today, and in benefiting society as a whole — my congratulations to IPPTA on conducting this seminar here. I am sure that the discussions and talks that happened over the course of the last day, have helped towards creating solutions for a cleaner and much more environmentally friendly India. It is a matter of pride for me to be here and once again thank you for giving me this honor. Everywhere we go, we have a huge issue with trash, especially with its disposal, with trash piled up on each side of the highway, especially if you go to the smaller rural towns, the smaller highways. This issue is made more acute by plastic, which percolates into microplastics seeping into the soil, and our rivers, and finding their way into the oceans. We need to find means towards eliminating the use of plastic, or at least reduce it, so that the burden on the environment is reduced at all costs. I am sure that the conference here has resulted in many such solutions coming forward. I am truly honored to be here. CFTRI stands as a
34 | Aug-Sep, 2023
The welcome address was given by Prof. Matche, Chief Scientist at CSIR - CFTRI and the Chairman of the Organizing Committee, “It is an absolute honor to have the presence of eminent personalities. Single-use plastic puts a lot of challenges on the environment, hence, in India, and globally as well, this product has been banned. The ban brings a negative right on plastic, for single usage, but it does not bring a positive right for paper usage. Now paper needs to compete with single-use plastic, a very versatile material as it acts as a good barrier to moisture and oxygen. We need to explore if we can get these advantages and required barrier properties in paper packaging while reducing the cost. Through this conference, we are collaborating with premium institutes like CFTRI, where a lot of R&D is done in food areas. The issue is, when paper comes in direct contact with food it leads to safety issues. Yet, the usage of paper as a direct packaging material is not very well regulated in terms of safety parameters. The Government of India is very keen to bring on comprehen-
www.papermart.in
sive regulations across all types of packaging material, from paper to metal to plastic. For instance, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has banned the usage of newspapers directly as packaging owing to resultant health hazards. So, before any such regulation comes it is my appeal to R&D institutes, academic institutes, and regulatory bodies, to come together and work regarding- which chemicals are being used, which of them are harmful in terms of global or specific migration, and can we have alternate chemicals or materials, etc. This is an opportunity, as globally also this area is not well regulated, and if we are able to bring out some research, and identify the particular type(s) of chemicals, or packaging that can be used in direct contact with the food, then we can be a global leader in this area.”
Need for Collection, Cleaning & Recycling and Mapping How Indian Foods Interact with Paper Packaging
The keynote address was presented by Mr. P N Sridhar, Deputy General Manager (Sustainable Products and Packaging) at ITC Limited (Secunderabad), “In packaging, initially, product-package compatibility was being focused on, then came the cost concern. India is a beautiful country but we have never marketed them the way the Europeans or the Westerners have. The more tourists flow, the better it is for all our

E•V•E•N•T industries, but there are aspects going against us. There is litter that you find wherever you go, therefore, to make India a global tourism destination, our first effort was Swachh Bharat, a programme that led to the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for plastic packaging. As packaging managers tried to cut their costs, they made their plastic thinner to the extent that even a secondary packaging material ranged between 25-35 microns. The product had excellent properties, very good moisture resistance, very good oxygen resistance, and very good water resistance, but on disposal, it had huge littering potential. As the thickness kept going down it became unremunerative to collect used plastic for the Swachh Sanchalak. So, they stopped picking up plastic. As opposed to plastic, the paper industry has always had an excellent stream of waste paper collection and recycling, both formal and informal. The plastic industry started with a minimum of 50 microns for plastic and Swach Sanchalaks were not collecting it due to its low return cost. Gradually, the Government banned plastic products below 75 microns and manufacturers changed to 75 microns as per the law. At 75 microns, the paper has a big yield advantage. It has become viable for many industries to reduce plastic consumption. In the coming years, the single-use plastic ban and EPR will be fused, that is if anything has the potential to litter, the government will remove it at its source itself. By 2024, CPCB is going to mandate the quantum of recycling, categories of plastic, etc. That said, Europe is looking at modulated EPR, that is they need to pay the fine for putting out plastic packaging which cannot be recycled, in euros per ton. By 2024 or 2025, modulated EPR will also enter the Indian market and the government will start asking all packaging material manufacturers and manufacturers of materials for dispensing, to be accountable and responsible for

collecting back whatever they have put out into the environment. For the last five to six years, we have been working on paper-based barriercoated solutions, especially for food packaging. In food and beverage dispensing in the takeaway or delivery segment - the alternatives available are paper cups, paper bowls, etc. Although traditionally paper cups were imparted with LDPE, now many other solutions designed with some recyclability factor are available. But what happens to the paper cup after we drink from it? This is the question we will face probably within the next one or two years. Who is responsible for collecting it and recycling it? The remnants in the paper cup and bowl, which means tea bags, tea, milk, juice, coffee, stuck rice particles, chicken leg pieces, etc., none of us would touch with a barge pole in any of our recycling. Hence, our weakest link in the chain is how are we going to ensure that good quality material is available for recycling. The minute it is direct food contact, the FSSAI bans recycling material, so we will have to use good quality virgin fiber, which can be easily recycled another three to four times. But once contaminated with food, recyclability cannot happen. IPPTA fraternity is known for various innovations and can aid the enabling of source segregation, cleaning, and waste paper collection mechanism. In the last 10 to 15 years, the industry has innovated heavily, especially in water consumption, energy consumption, specific water and energy consumption, and specific emissions. Our next innovation has to be regarding consumption and dispensing, and a tie-up with CFTRI can help in this regard as not all types of food and beverages can be easily dispensed or packed with paper in spite of barrier coating. We could use a chemical simulant for dry, wet, or oily food, but that is the Westerners' definition of food and simulant. We need to try to find what would simulate a lemon pickle, a paneer butter masala, or a
www.papermart.in
biryani, with turmeric or mustard oil. The container starts staining within 30-40 minutes which the delivery takes. We can evolve solutions with CFTRI on testing, which should be based on Indian conditions. Once the government derives standards through the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), FSSAI will start specifying these standards. So, the mandate given to us is to work on compatibility, ensuring an Indian scientific method of mapping how our foods interact with paper and its various barriers, and the need for collection, cleaning, and then recycling.”
Paper: A Hope to Protect Oceans and Nature
This inaugural program was presided over by Mr. Ganesh Bhadti, President of IPPTA, “For the last two years, I am working with some of the scientists here - with Dr. Sandeep from actuary effluent treatment sector; with Dr. Sunil Kumar of CSRI, Dehradun, on energy management. We are working with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for energy management and the Bureau of Energy. The paper industry is witnessing a quantum change in its operations, with changes in the product portfolio, and priorities, but at the same time, opportunities are also available and we are trying to explore those situations along with the available technologies. The government has banned single-use plastic, but the implementation is taking some
E•V•E•N•T time. At the same time, the paper industry also needs time to develop a suitable product to replace plastic. About 25 years ago, in 1997, a British navigator and research scientist was sailing through the North Pacific Sea when he observed from a distance an island-like area. When he approached it, to his surprise it was a garbage patch. Today, that garbage patch is called GPGP, Great Pacific Garbage Patch, and it spans an area of 1.6 million square kilometers, which is almost 6,500 times of Mysuru. It exists between Hawaii Islands and California. Further navigation revealed similar patches in the Pacific Ocean. Some of the statistics are alarming - about 450 million tons of plastic is generated every year, and by 2050 the figure will reach nearly 600 million tons, with only 6-7 percent being recycled. There are five oceans that are badly affected, and the Indian Ocean is one of them. We are also now working with CFTRI as time and the effort we put in is very
important now. We are sitting in an institution known for its intensive work in developing food-grade products, and a knowledge of international standards.”
Challenges of Paper Packaging over Plastic Packaging
Dr. Sridevi Annapurna Singh, Director of CSIR - CFTRI, also presented her thoughts on the
seminar, “I am happy that IPPTA decided to come here because we have the scientific background and you are looking for technological solutions, this hand-holding would definitely make the pace go much faster. If a barrier could be developed, I would like to ask if there could be a thin barrier that is made from alternate macromolecules that are already available in nature and are biodegradable, so they can be just peeled off after food use. Some other solutions may be fermentation or organic waste, which could be disposed of as fertilizer while the paper gets recycled. When you look at food packaging there are many things that we need to understand, first and foremost being the perishable nature of food. It is not simply replacing single-use or even recyclable plastic, which anyway is not allowed for food packaging. Many of the grains are breathing living materials, so there will be moisture coming out of these

grains, carbon dioxide, and so on. Moisture can affect the shelf life and as we are looking at more and more processed foods for enhancing the shelf life, we need to keep this in mind. Paper does become soggy and its strength is gone. So we also look at food packaging in terms of the gas barriers. If the food is exposed to oxygen, or even light, some of the nutrients could get destroyed; many times the colors would change, the flavor will change, and other chemical changes will happen. The packaging material also protects it physically which means that there could be breakages if it is not protected properly. If the barrier properties are not good there can be microbial biological spoilage too. The packaging material often has many additives and can impart flavor and certain colors. Some of the chemicals used in making the packaging can leach into the food product and all of these can cause food safety issues, as well as sensory negative attributes to the food. So it is not as simple, and that is probably why plastic has been so popular. It had all these wonderful properties which made it very useful to use for food packaging. Nearly 50 percent of single-use plastic is used for beverage and food packaging only. Further, it is easy to print and mold into the desired shape. On the other side, we have climate change, greenhouse gases emission, and oceans filled with plastic. It is estimated by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans, which is alarming. Plastic has this wonderful feature of only breaking up and not breaking down, it means that it will start breaking up into microplastics and will end up choking our beautiful diversity. We have to find a balance between what we are eating, how we are living, and what it is doing to our planet. We also need to hold hands to

solve this great problem by taking small steps at a time. You are welcome to come back to us with any projects. We will be happy to work together.” The IPPTA 2023 journal was released during the inaugural session. It serves as a platform for researchers, academicians, industry professionals, and experts to publish their research findings, technical papers, and innovations related to the pulp and paper sector.
The Paper Industry is a Very Important Cog in the Developing Wheel of India
Mr. Pawan Agarwal, President of IPMA, presented the Vote of Thanks and also threw light on the continuous contribution of the paper industry to Indian development, “The Indian paper industry has come of age as I see a lot of old friends along with the new generation in the audience. However, we have to understand that whatever we have done is too little, and too much has to be done in the coming years. The paper industry is a very important cog in the developing wheel of India. The industry has a role to play in many of the central government policies, for instance, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan - we are the natural scavengers of the waste being

generated in the country; 100 percent literacy mission - it is not possible without the paper industry. Paper has a DNA that is naturally sustainable. We use wood, or agro fiber, to produce paper, and even if it is recycled fiber, it originates either from wood or agro. Hence, our product is sustainable, biodegradable, and natural, unlike plastic, but we have to be very careful about our manufacturing process. As the IPMA President, with conviction I can declare that over the past one and a half decades, the Indian paper industry has reduced its freshwater consumption by 80 percent, which is phenomenal. So, our manufacturing processes have to be sustainable and environmentally friendly as well. We have to be very cautious about our overall energy consumption, our overall carbon footprints, and the chemicals we are consuming to make a sheet of paper. There is no need to invent the wheel again and again, as much technology is already available

to replace single-use plastic. We have to simply adapt the technology available to suit our requirements. In association with CPPRI and CFTRI, we can definitely make a product that can replace single-use plastic in the country.”

Paper Mart: What is the chemistry behind your recently launched composite cover and what are its main application areas? Benno Bader: The composite cover is made of fiber reinforced high performance epoxy resin. The composite cover is made mainly to replace hard covers, and not to replace polyurethane or soft rubber covers. Additionally the composite cover can be used to replace covers made for ceramic, ebonite rollers wherever high abrasion and high hardness is required. Application areas vary depending on roller type. For example, in calendar rollers, where there is no competent cover available in the market, the composite cover becomes essential. The composite cover can also be used for hard press rolls, wire rolls, size press rolls.
PM: What are the benefits and advantages of composite cover to the paper mills? BB: The composite cover offers a higher grinding interval compared to paper filled covers resulting in longer lifespan. The composite cover provides better uniformity enhancing paper quality and preventing overpressing of the paper. The composite cover possesses the strengths necessary to withstand accidents without exploding or damaging the machine's other parts.
being used, frequency of grinding intervals. Generally, the composite cover has a longer lifespan compared to the other covers.
PM: What is the acceptance rate of your new launch in the Indian market? PSP: The Indian market is highly receptive to change when guided properly. It is very easy to penetrate the Indian market. We always provide guidelines and do's and don'ts on the roller.
In press rolls, the composite cover features adjustable repellent properties due to special fillers and better sheet release contributing to improved paper quality. Repair options are available for damaged composite cover, with patching or local repair depending on the extent of the damage.
PM: What was the major idea behind this new technology of composite cover? PS Paintal: The major idea was to boost “Make in India”. Many big roller groups were importing these covers where they had to pay high duties and wait for 6 to 7 months or even 1 year for the delivery. Whereas Zenith makes the composite cover indigenously, so the big groups do not have to pay any duty and the delivery time is also 4 weeks. So the big groups are saving time and saving money as well.

Krofta Engineering: Providing Complete Water Treatment Solutions
K
Mr. Raghvendra Khaitan, Managing Director, Krofta Engineering Limited
rofta Engineering Limited is one of the leading suppliers of waste water treatment equipment and complete water management solutions, having supplied more than 1200 systems for effluent and wastewater applications. With installations operating in diverse industrial segments in India, the company's most recent achievement is the development of its triple wire belt filter press for sludge dewatering. In a recent conversation with Paper Mart, Mr. Raghvendra Khaitan, Managing Director, Krofta Engineering Limited, shared about the company's journey, DAF technology and other water treatment solutions, plant set-up and manufacturing capabilities, market footprint, and business roadmap.
Paper Mart: Please tell us about Krofta India's journey, major milestones, and crucial achievements. Raghvendra Khaitan: Krofta Engineering Limited, India began operations in 1983 as a manufacturer for Dissolved Air Floatation (DAF) units. Since then, we have added multiple products to our portfolio and made technical collaborations with several companies around the world. Our most recent achievement would be the development of our triple wire belt filter press for sludge de-watering.
PM: Kindly elaborate on your DAF technology and how you serve the pulp and paper industry with it. RK: Our DAF technology is used for physio-chemical separation and is most popularly used to treat the paper machine back water and is used for fiber recovery, which is then taken back to the machine chest. Our DAFs are also
48 | Aug-Sep, 2023
used as secondary clarifiers in lieu of conventional clarifier systems especially in those areas where space is constrained and in this case they also serve a dual purpose of not only physio chemical separation but also sludge thickening. Additionally, our DAFs are also used for color and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) reduction after the secondary clarifier, and we have seen excellent results in two paper mills where we have installed them. Our DAFs work best with our patented air dissolving tubes, which is a pressure vessel used to saturate air in water.
PM: What are the other technologies and solutions that you offer to the pulp and paper industry? RK: We offer complete water treatment solutions. With the recent addition of varied anaerobic treatment methods to our product range, we are able to provide

more value to our customers and give them the best solutions to keep their paper mills running without any hiccups. We help our clients produce smell free paper, also while allowing them to save costs by re-using process water and generation of bio-gas. As pulp and paper is a large carrier of water, sludge generation is also a major concern and with our recent development of screw press and our triple wire belt press, we are able to handle and dewater large volumes of sludge which invariably if not treated, are either discharged as a slurry or taken back to ETP which increases the load.
PM: Do you engineer or manufacture your technologies in-house? If yes, please elaborate on your plant set-up and manufacturing capabilities? RK: Yes, we have our own 60,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility in Faridabad, India. We have a qualified team of top personnel along with a certified production team. We have standard capabilities of steel processing such as cutting, bending, and welding, along with a separate cleaning, painting and sandblasting area. We follow all quality checks and inspections, with safety being our top priority.
PM: Is it easy to operate your technology or does it require human resource training? Do you provide it as a part of your service contract? RK: Our technology is easy to operate, especially if our clients opt for automated systems. As part of our contracts, we provide free service from our engineers, for a certain time period, who will be present at client sites during commissioning so they can train the operators on how to run the machine. We urge our clients to use our services to avoid any issues during machine startup. We also provide a detailed operation manual. Our service engineers can be requested at site for maintenance issues with just a few days' notice. We also now provide remote start up services.
PM: Can you tell us in detail about your market footprint? What is your USP? RK: We are currently present in most regions in India,

Middle East and certain parts of Africa. Our USP is our custom-tailored solutions which we provide, and our team's in-depth knowledge of the functioning of the paper mill. There is no scenario we have not seen and we will surely have a solution for you.
PM: What is your business roadmap? What is your annual turnover in terms of physical sales? RK: We wish to continue upgrading our technology and being able to provide new methods for our clients to treat their water and protect the environment. In terms of annual turnover for physical sales, this past year we completed over 120 projects big and small, and dispatched material of over 660 metric tonnes.
PM: What are the recent developments that you have invested in at Krofta Engineering for your pulp and paper segment? RK: We have recently launched our anaerobic treatment reactors. These are of utmost importance in paper mills due to the prevalence of high levels of COD. Further, we continue developing our existing technology, such as in DAF's - our Megacell has been very successful in paper mills across India and outside. We have also launched a sludge digestor which is of great importance to the paper industry as we are able to generate gas from excess sludge and this generation of gas can become a part of green energy initiative for the paper mills.
PM: What are your vision and plans for Krofta India's future? RK: Our vision is to keep exploring new technologies and accordingly inculcate them in our existing stream to develop new equipments which may be beneficial for industries either in the way of lower capex, lower opex and generation of gas, ultimately leading to green initiatives. Our future plans are to expand our operations to upgrade our facilities, to adhere to the stringent requirements of customers as well as explore opportunities at different markets wherever we can add value to the project.

ANDRITZ Lamella Evaporators
ANDRITZ lamella evaporation plants have proven to be so successful among pulpproducing customers that major expansion in manufacturing has occurred three times over the last decade to keep up with the increased orders. The latest addition to lamella manufacturing will see a brand-new state-of-the-art facility starting up in China in the summer of 2022.
T
here are now some 450 references around the world for ANDRITZ lamella evaporation plants and the unique technology is extremely well received among kraft and mechanical pulp producers alike. To ensure quality standards are kept to absolute top quality, all manufacturing of lamellas is kept in-house at a specialist facility in Tiszakécske, Hungary, and a soonto-be operational facility in Foshan, China. The new facility now doubles the original capacity of ANDRITZ lamella manufacturing.

Mr. Jarmo Kaila, Global Area Manager, Evaporation Plants, ANDRITZ
G•R•O•W•T•H S•T•O•R•Y “Originally, the lamellas were manufactured in Finland, but as we received more and more orders a new location was needed,” says Jarmo Kaila, Global Area Manager, Evaporation Plants, ANDRITZ. “Tiszakécske in Hungary was finally chosen, and it has proven to be the perfect location from which to serve our customers worldwide. The facility began manufacturing lamellas in 2009.
out their whole lifecycle. “Our lamella evaporators offer unique advantages that are ideally suited for the modern pulp mills,” explains Kaila. “Our process solution is robust, achieving reliable and uninterrupted black liquor processing required by modern, single-line mills. Lamella evaporators also ensure that evaporated water that is returned to the process as condensate is clean, making sure it can be re-used and that no effluent is produced.” “Low vapor velocity inherent to our design is one important aspect for achieving full condensate re-use. In and of itself, it reduces liquor carryover, reducing COD load of the produced condensate. It also makes the system more tolerant to black liquor that has a tendency to foam, again ensuring that liquor carryover to the condensate doesn't happen even during slight upset conditions.”
Ms. Sanna Semi, Vice President, Evaporation Plant, ANDRITZ “Order volume has continued to increase ever since the first lamella rolled off the line in Hungary in 2009, and since then we have increased capacity at the site twice as the orders continued to come in. The new facility in China will help us to keep up with demand as well as to better serve our customers across Asia.” And it's not just an increase in orders that ANDRITZ is experiencing; the size of lamella evaporation plants is also increasing. Sanna Semi, Vice President, Evaporation Plants, ANDRITZ, says, “There has been huge activity in the market recently, and plants have quickly risen in capacity in the last ten years from a maximum of 1,500 t/h to our biggest now at 3,500 t/h.”
The Secret To Success The secret to the success of the ANDRITZ lamella evaporation plants is down to the unique process benefits and easy and safe operation through-
69 | Aug-Sep, 2023
In the case of lamella evaporators, the liquid to be concentrated is on the outside of the heating surface, another major benefit for the high solids effects. “You simply put in some low solids liquid, ideally weak black liquor, and it washes away water soluble fouling with no need to shut down,” explains Kaila.
personnel involved in the manufacturing of lamellas have to acquire new skills. In Hungary, ANDRITZ operates a special school for welders since the skill set required for lamella fabrication is unique. “We have a unique way of manufacturing the lamellas,” says Kaila. “The process involves hydroforming of the lamella, using tools and machinery developed in-house. We only use the highest quality stainless steel, followed by a carefully designed fabrication process. During the hydroforming process we also prooftest each lamella in pressures that far exceed what is required in final use or for pressure vessel testing.” There are thousands of welds needed on each lamella, with a large evaporation plant with all effects adding up to millions of individual welds. Each weld must be perfect. To facilitate this, ANDRITZ uses the very latest in laser welding technology. “This is where excellent quality control and quality assurance are an absolute essential,” says Kaila. “We have automated manufacturing as much as possible, but the human need here is vital. In fact, the skilled operators are still the very best quality control instrument in this process.”
Semi adds, “The unique benefits of the lamella evaporators in very difficult service have also proven popular outside our traditional black liquor evaporator service. For example, our customers in mechanical pulping and other industries use it for effluent evaporation; even difficult effluents can be recycled back to process so raw water use is reduced and emissions eliminated.”
Technically Demanding Manufacturing Requiring Highly-Skilled Personnel The detailed manufacturing methods that go into the making of ANDRITZ lamella heat transfer surfaces are a closely guarded secret and a result of decades of development work. The

which will make it a truly state-ofthe-art lamella manufacturing plant,” says Kaila. “When it comes to quality and performance, we are leveraging our know-how and what we do in Hungary.”
The New Foshan Facility Due to the demand for more and more lamellas for ANDRITZ evaporation plants, investment into significantly higher manufacturing capacity was decided. The new location in Foshan, China was decided on due to its proximity to a wider Eastern customer base. The project is part of a new ANDRITZ (Foshan) Intelligent Manufacturing Co., Ltd, utilizing all the proven machinery, know-how, and decades of experience in the manufacturing of lamellas and supplementing it with the latest advances in manufacturing automation. The facility will be a close replica of the site in Hungary when it comes to quality manufacturing and accumulated expertise in the making of lamellas. “In Foshan, we have built a brand new facility leveraging the latest technology and automation,

are particularly showing an increase in demand for our products, with China already being the world's largest producer of paper products and consumer pulp. It is logical that ANDRITZ expands lamella production here.”
Thomas Schmitz, President, ANDRITZ China
“The decision to invest into further lamella manufacturing capacity in Foshan was made after the first internal discussions were held in January 2021. The implementation of our new workshop had high priority. We are proud that within one year after the final green light for the new workshop investment was granted; we are now already in the test production phase of our first lamellas. This speed and progress is based on the very good cooperation between all involved parties.”
President of ANDRITZ China, Thomas Schmitz, states, “The global demand for ANDRITZ lamellas and evaporation plants is increasing and we are very proud to be expanding here in Foshan, China. In fact, the Eastern Asian and Chinese markets
“With our tried and tested experience in Hungary, and our brand new facility in China, we are now well placed and ideally located to serve our worldwide customer base for ANDRITZ lamella evaporators,” concludes Kaila.

Sustainable, Cost-Effective and High-Quality Tissue with
HYBRID TECHNOLOGY How can you use the optimal combination of energy and fiber to reduce the environmental impact of tissue production? In this article, we discuss what hybrid technology can offer in sustainability, costeffectiveness and quality to achieve an optimal product.
Ms. Jenny Lahti-Samuelsson, Vice President, Tissue Mills Sales, Valmet
72 | Aug-Sep, 2023
O
ne of the challenges when you want to start up a new tissue production line is selecting the appropriate technology for your requirements. To make the right decision, you need to understand the specific quality demands for your market and then decide on the product strategy. However, in today's competitive market, there are additional influential factors such as the importance of caring for the environment by reducing emissions, the increasing demand for raw materials, and the recent rise in energy prices. How can a tissue producer consider all this and still be profitable? Valmet's hybrid technology* allows you to optimally meet a combination of targets.
With hybrid technology, you can reduce the amount of fiber for the same volume because increasing your roll bulk equates to fiber savings. Increased roll bulk is achieved by creating higher sheet caliper for the same or lower basis weight, therefore roll bulk is inversely related to roll density; as roll bulk increases, the density of fibers decreases. The product strategy optimizes product specifications and operating costs. You can reduce the length, lower the basis weight and work with product quality. And the beauty of it is that you don't have to choose one or the other: the options can be combined.
* Valmet hybrid technologies consists of the Valmet Advantage™ NTT®, Advantage™ QRT® and Advantage™ eTAD™ technology. All numbers listed on this article are related to an average for all 3 machine technologies.
However, before a decision is made, we have to consider that each region has a different product strategy. A quick overview of toilet tissue in
www.papermart.in
Quality, Sustainability And Competitiveness
T•I•S•S•U•E
different regions reveals the following: l
North America: TAD/structured products have been developed mainly in North America, where the basis weight has been increasing over
time, typically above 22 gsm, with only two plies. This combines softness with more fiber per ply and fewer plies than in conventional products worldwide for an increased roll bulk. It also generates better machine efficiency during production.
l
South America: In Brazil, the required length on the market is either 20 or 30 meters. With a bulkier product produced with a hybrid machine, for example, there is an opportunity to produce a twoply instead of a three-ply product and still achieve a length of 20 meters and make huge fiber savings. It is also possible to migrate your conventional economy two-ply product to a premium product – still two-ply and the same length, but softer and with less fiber.
l
Europe: In Europe, private labels are strong and dictate the market. 15-20 gsm and ply are important. But is the number of plies good for production efficiency and sustainability? Probably not!
l
Asia: Dominant in the facial market, surface softness is more important than bulk in Asia. 15 gsm or lower is the standard basis weight, utilizing more plies to increase product quality. The trend is to move to structured products of higher quality with a decreased ply strategy instead.
Shifting to the Premium Segment
Source: Valmet global product data base for commercial paper samples and converted pilot trials last 7 years, measured all in Karlstad pilot machine laboratory

www.papermart.in
Sustainable production efficiency can be achieved with fewer plies/reduced total basis weight. For example, with a hybrid machine, it's possible to
T•I•S•S•U•E produce a bulky product with fewer plies yet at an equal or higher level of softness. As always, the trade-off is between bulk, softness and tensile strength. Comparing the average conventional and hybrid numbers, you can reduce the basis weight for a hybrid bath tissue product at higher caliper and comparable tensile levels. Hybrids have better fiber efficiency, resulting in higher roll bulk with a better quality output. The end product will have almost 30 percent more roll bulk than a conventional embossed product, which means an average of around 22 percent less fibers with up to 10 percent better softness quality. Moving on to towels, a global look reveals that a hybrid towel – even taking into account the smaller property gap for a heavier embossed kitchen towel product – will have less fibers with more caliper, generating an average of 44 percent more water absorption than in a similar conventional product. The roll geometries are comparable, but with 12 percent less fiber at higher quality. With hybrids, you can migrate your light dry creped product from the value segment to the premium or ultra-premium levels. Reducing fiber consumption with more roll bulk provides the end product with a lighter basis weight and fewer sheet counts (reduced roll length), but still at a higher quality. What about the environmental footprint of production on hybrid machines? In our studies, we have compared the fiber, water and carbon footprints with an average conventional reference bath tissue product of 115 grams. In the roll case, we can decrease fiber use by 22 percent, resulting in a reduction of carbon emissions at equal water use compared to the DCT case.
74 | Aug-Sep, 2023
Achieving the Ideal Combination If you want to move closer to the premium quality level, transferring a conventional machine to a hybrid concept results in a softer and more water-absorbent product. More than this, you will have lower variable operating costs for a roll or case. And with less fiber and less energy, you'll have a more sustainable product.
“
The beauty is that you don't have to choose one or the other – the options can be combined.
l
Length: With hybrid technology, reduced length is easily achieved for the same volume, which can create the perception of a premium bulk product among consumers.
l
Diameter: The consumers feel they are getting more value for the product, even if the amount of fiber is the same. TAD products in the US usually have a larger diameter. With hybrid technology, you can match that size.
l
Basis weight: The weight of fibers per area is the easiest way for the producer and consumer to refer to fiber saving. With a lower basis weight in the product but still the same volume, the consumer will experience better conformability in a bulkier product.
l
Quality: Higher quality enables a higher end product price. In the US, for example, the price of TAD quality is more than twice that of conventional products. Producers can achieve more profit with less fiber use per case.
” There's a lot of information to digest when deciding which tissue machine to invest in. We asked Jenny LahtiSamuelsson, Vice President, Tissue Mills Sales, Valmet, to briefly comment on the words we so often use in connection with tissue production. With hybrid in mind, this is her summary:

Bureau of Indian Standards Extends PE Compliance Deadline The Bureau of Indian Standards recently extended the quality control deadline, for the 4th time now, from 3rd April 2023 to 3rd October 2023. T
he Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) recently extended the quality control deadline from 3rd April 2023 to 3rd October 2023 declaration which gave polyethylene (PE) producers some much-needed relief as they had been rushing to fulfill the deadline. They now have until October 3, 2023, to secure the certification they need to export their goods to India, as per a BIS extension. The extension has reduced the strain on Asia-Pacific producers who had yet to have their facilities assessed for compliance with BIS requirements. Sellers can now rest easy because the threat of their cargo being confiscated at Indian ports has been avoided.
According to market participants, several Middle Eastern producers have reportedly passed facility inspections and secured BIS licenses in order to continue exporting to India. As the substandard cargoes won't be allowed to enter India any longer due to the probable enforcement of BIS standards, it is anticipated that exporters of these cargoes will switch their focus to other South Asian nations like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. The BIS additionally moved the deadline for ethyl vinyl acetate copolymers to 3rd October 2023. The BIS first introduced the planned adoption of new PE standards in April 2021. The deadline was later extended by six months and was originally scheduled to begin in October of the same year. Two additional extensions were subsequently issued by the BIS in April and October 2022, making the most recent one for October 2023 the fourth, since the original deadline in October 2021.

M Group announced in April the approval of a comprehensive investment project to increase the long-term competitiveness of its largest board and paper mill MM Kwidzyn, Poland. The commissioning of the project has been postponed to 2024 due to prevalent market conditions. Significant energy and CO2 cost reductions, increased pulp integration, and the entry into the market for sack kraft paper are to set the mill up for sustainable future success. An investment of around EUR 660 million was planned for the project for the years 2023 - 2026, with disbursements until 2027. Mr. Peter Oswald, CEO of MM Group, commented, “The development of the MM Group in the 1st half-year reflects the continuing weak demand in the cartonboard and paper sector after the record year 2022. As already communicated in midJune, the significant decline in results is mainly attributable to the weak volume development in the division MM Board & Paper. In contrast, the division MM Packaging was able to record an overall positive performance with the successful integration of last year's acquisitions in the resilient pharma-

ceutical packaging sector and factoring in one-off restructuring costs.” He further stated, “The historically unusual decline in volumes on the European cartonboard market was higher than expected, mainly as a result of the restraint in consumer spending due to inflation as well as reduction of high inventories at customers.”

he Indian paper industry has reportedly reduced its water utilization by 80%, and is now aiming to further lower this number as the industry has made investments of INR 25,000 crore in sustainable production processes in the last few years. As per a statement by IPMA, several industry players have already taken environment-friendly measures to reduce their carbon and water footprint. The players have deployed modern technology solutions and captive power generation to achieve water and energy efficiency. Mr. Pawan Agarwal, President of IPMA, stated, “Integrated paper mills have reduced water usage to 40 cubic meters to produce a tonne of paper from the earlier 200 cubic meters. There is a concerted effort to bring it down further. Indian Paper Industry has invested to the
tune of INR 25,000 crore in sustainable production processes and capacities in the last few years.” Mr. Agarwal further informed that the paper industry has also reduced power consumption and integrated plants are producing 40% of electricity by utilizing the biomass from the pulping process. Mr. Agarwal claimed that the paper industry has been one of the top-performing sectors under the government's PAT scheme under the National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency. On sourcing of key raw material, wood, Agarwal said the paper industry has turned 'wood positive' as more trees have been grown than harvested for pulp making. “The industry has worked incessantly with over 5 lakh marginal farmers over the last several years and has successfully brought 12 lakh hectares of largely degraded land under plantations,”the IPMA said.

N•E•W•S transformation of Mativ and aligns with our strategy to focus our efforts, accelerate growth, and drive value for our shareholders. This pivotal action positions our portfolio for faster growth and focuses our resources on categories with the most promising revenue and margin expansion opportunities. While a solid business, EP's concentration in the tobacco industry is not aligned with Mativ's long-term ambition and presents a more attractive value proposition under new strategic ownership. Our talented and dedicated employees will continue to deliver outstanding products and service to EP's long-standing customer base, and we are confident in a smooth transition.” She further said, “The sale process has also given us the opportunity to rebalance our capital allocation approach, with the top near-term priority being debt reduction. In addition to paying down debt from the sale proceeds, we are also rightsizing our dividend to align with our reshaped portfolio, support continued near-term de-leveraging, and position the Company for future growth investments. In addition, our board has approved a USD 30 million share repurchase program,
providing added flexibility in our cash returns to shareholders. We believe our stock represents an attractive value and expect to opportunistically execute share repurchases going forward.” Continuing her statement, “Since our July 2022 merger, the management team and Board of Directors have been committed to making deliberate and carefully considered decisions to unlock the long-term value we see in Mativ as a leading specialty materials provider. The scope of these decisions and actions includes strategic portfolio optimization, capital allocation, organic investments, restructuring, and many other critical factors in realizing the enterprise's full potential. Ultimately, we see the sale of EP and a more balanced capital allocation strategy that accelerates de-leveraging as the strongest path forward to amplify our long-term profit outlook and drive maximum value creation for our shareholders.” Subject to customary closing date adjustments, Mativ expects to receive net proceeds (of taxes and other items) of approximately USD 575 million in the proposed transaction, which would be primarily used for debt paydown of approximately 35 percent of outstanding net debt.

wedish startup Adsorbi AB has secured EUR 360,000 in seed funding from Metsä Spring, Chalmers Ventures, and Jovitech Invest for its cellulose-based air purification material that can be used in air filters and odour removal products. Adsorbi marks Metsä Spring's first Swedish startup investment and will be an addition to its wood-based innovation portfolio,

already consisting of four other external investments and two internal development projects. Metsä Group's innovation company Metsä Spring is actively looking to invest in the best possible innovations to replace fossil-based materials and chemicals in everyday products. The funds will be used to continue studying product application possibilities and ramp up sales in odour removal and art conservation while concentrating on product development and field testing with air filter companies. Founded by a team consisting of university researchers and seasoned business developers in 2022, Adsorbi's material is made from a renewable resource, wood, and has a low environmental impact and long product lifetime. The material is excellent at capturing and storing air

N•E•W•S pollutants that can cause problems in respiratory systems. Indoor air quality is a much larger issue than currently understood. According to the World Health Organization, indoor air pollution killed more than 3 million people in 2020. Many ailments, such as asthma, heart disease, and lung cancers, can be caused by bad air quality. As people in industrialized nations spend up to 80–90% of their time indoors, maintaining air quality is crucial to keeping people's health intact. In addition, many businesses rely on top indoor air quality. For example, museums and art galleries protect artifacts from air pollutants and also need to remove harmful particles that the artwork emits into the air. The current industry standard for air purification is activated carbon, which has many downsides – its production from coal or coconut shells has a big negative impact on the environment, it has a short life cycle, is hardly customizable, and performs poorly in removing health hazardous volatile organic compounds (VOCs). As governments are rolling out stricter regulations on air quality, businesses are in a race to find new solutions. Adsorbi's material answers this need, as it is flexible, has a longer lifetime, and is more energy efficient. Unlike activated carbon, it doesn't release any VOCs back into the air. The material is bio-based, its original raw material is
sustainably harvested from the Nordic forests, and it has a wide range of applications. A significant market where it can remove activated carbon is the odour removal industry for shoes, bags, and cars – making these products more hygienic and prolonging the products' lifecycle. “We want to thank Chalmers Ventures for their continued support of our mission, as well as warmly welcome new investors Metsä Spring and Jovitech Invest. Now we have a dream team of investors who understand deep tech, material startups, as well as novel usage cases for cellulose. Our patented material can be used wherever air pollutants are a problem - in air filters, products that remove bad odours, and in museums to protect works of art. This means we can tackle several significant markets with one unique material”, says cofounder and CEO of Adsorbi, Ms. Hanna Johansson. “We are very excited to invest in Adsorbi, which has a diverse and solid research background and business-minded founding team. It is also working on a product made out of pulp, which makes Adsorbi of particular interest for Metsä Group. With Adsorbi in our portfolio, we are yet another step closer to removing fossil-based materials from everyday products”, says Mr. Niklas von Weymarn, CEO of Metsä Spring.
Holmen Iggesund Launches Inverform PET 30 for 25% Reduced Climate Footprint Holmen Iggesund has launched Iverform PET 30, which is an upgraded version of its 40-gsm ready-made meal trays. The new 30 gsm version has reduced the product range's climate footprint by 25 percent. Aug 2, 2023

olmen Iggesund has launched Inver form PET 30, a 30 gsm version of its popular ready-made meal trays. The upgraded product has reduced its climate footprint by 25 percent more than its 40 gsm version while retaining the high quality Ms. Malin Ekroos, Product Manager and functionality of the older of Added Value, Holmen Iggesund version. The upgrade is a result of product innovation undertaken at the Holmen Iggesund R&D center, and considerable customer input. The new product can be used in combination with the company's Inverform paperboard products. The new, lower plastic content means that the company can now offer its customers some of its combined paperboard and PET products at a ratio of 90 percent fiber to 10 percent plastic.
95 | Aug-Sep, 2023
The company's combined PET coating and paperboard products are ideal for making ready-made meal trays and have all the advantages of trays made entirely from plastic. These solutions are created from fresh wood fibers of known and traceable origin from sustainably managed forests. The trays have a significantly lower carbon footprint and are a sustainable alternative to conventional methods. The PET coating is available in black, white, or transparent versions. In addition to its high-temperature resistance, PET seals very well and provides an excellent oxygen and fat barrier. The PET-coated reverse side also has a glossy finish for improved surface characteristics. Food trays made from combined paperboard and PET coatings offer better recyclability than trays made entirely with fossilbased materials. And as well as having a fat and moisture barrier, the PET coating ensures extreme temperature resistance. This makes it ideal for trays that are placed into microwaves or conventional ovens with ready-made chilled and frozen food.

N•E•W•S Ms. Malin Ekroos, Product Manager of Added Value at Holmen Iggesund, commented, “Our new PET 30 gsm -product enables food packaging that has the required temperature resistance and fat and moisture barrier but with very low plastic content. We created this product in line with our ambition to decrease the use of plastic in packaging. This is something consumers want to see, as well as brands, and we can contribute to that change."
Ms. Ekroos further said, “Our new product has the lowest plastic content of any comparable extrusion-coated PET product currently on the market. The launch of the new Holmen Iggesund PET 30 product is part of our product development process. It is a good step forward in our journey to provide our customers with increasingly sustainable alternatives, a journey we will continue through more and more product innovation.”
