entury Pulp & Paper is the largest manufac-Cturer of paper, board, tissue, and pulp from a single location in India with a capacity of 500,000 + MTPA. With service centres and sales offices across the country as well as agents across the world, the company has been a major player in the domestic and export market for this industry.

CenturyPulp&Paper: RidingtheWavesof InnovationandExpansion

Mr. Vijay Kaul, CEO, Century Pulp & Paper

12 | www.papermart.in / June-July, 2022

Century Pulp & Paper has stayed committed to its values to create a positive impact and continuously strives to improve the quality of its products. In an interview with Paper Mart, Mr. Vijay Kaul, CEO, Century Pulp & Paper discusses recent developments and the future plans of the mill. In the next few years, we'll be investing around INR 500 crores in the Lalkuan facility which would help us take the overall capacity to about 600,000 MTPA.

PM: How would you like to strategically invest in the direction of – technology upgrades, product development, market expansions, and so on?

www.papermart.in / June-July, 2022 | 13

PM: Since the company has always been at the forefront of implementing efficient technologies, what are your key focus areas at the moment in this respect?

VK: On a regular basis, about INR 150 to 200 crores of investment essentially is done practically every year in improving the conditions of the machine, enhancing the capability of the machine, modernising, digitising, etc. In the next few years, we'll be investing about INR 500 crores which would help us take the overall capacity to about 600,000 MTPA. There are certain portions that are allotted for improving certain parts of the different paper machines, board machines, and tissue machines.

VK: Our strategy is very clear, first, is to invest in the plant in order to increase the capacity to get the maximum production out of it at a low cost, second, to develop new products, and the third is to look for expansion - whether it is an acquisition or putting up a new facility at a different location altogether.

Vijay Kaul: Century Pulp and Paper has been in operation since 1984 and has been a significant player in the export market, especially in the tissue and paperboard segment. The major factor which is driving this growth is the demand which has increased over the last few years. The company's existing production capacity is approximately 500,000 MTPA, which we intend to take to around 600,000 MTPA in a year or two, by doing some modification and rebuilding a few of the machines.

PM: Please share your strategy and the overall vision for elevating the company's standing to greater heights.

Paper Mart: Century Pulp and Paper is a major player in the domestic and export market for the paper, paperboard, and tissue sector; what is the major factor driving the growth? How the new management intends to take this growth story forward?

VK: We are talking to the leading global manufacturers of the paper industry who are in the technological arena about the new things happening and the cost optimisation techniques. We are in the process of exploring the new technologies and fitting those into our present system or implementing them in the new expansion.

EYEINGMILESTONE •••••••••••••

Another portion needs to be utilised in overall improvement of the cost structures, marketing, doing the market research, having the market intelligence department, creating a customer base which will always be with us, and creating loyalty among the customers - all this being a part of the whole gamut. The other part might go for a new expansion at a totally different geographical location. With 600,000 MTPA, this place will be totally saturated, and we may have to go to some other place. The Lalkuan facility in Uttarakhand is catering to the northern and central part of the country. We have not been able to provide a major quantity of products in western and southern India. There are various options being explored in these two parts of the country. In the long term, we need to see that we should be able to export from there, reduce the cost, have better logistics arrangements, and get the best human resource at a reasonable value. We are also evaluating technology and cost implications. It is difficult to determine the Capex at this stage, but within the next five to seven years, Century Pulp and Paper has set a target of clocking a turnover of INR 10,000 crores, which is currently about INR 3500 crores.

Currently, we are spending most of our time understanding how and where we need to expand the business. We are in the process of finalising the market surveys and evaluating the different technologies available. And once we get that, we'll be able to let the people know more about our expansion project. At present, we are looking at various options be it paper, packaging board or tissue. Cost reduction, technological upgradation, new opportunities, product development, and the right scale of the economy - are a few focus areas of Century Pulp and Paper in order to become competitive and grow this industry.

It takes about four to five years for the tree to grow in a position that we can use in making the pulp.

PM: How do you foresee the demand outlook of the Indian paper industry and the different industry verticals –paper, paperboards, tissue papers, and so on?

Secondly, we need to create a system in our organisation, which captures the trends shaping global development so that we plan our strategies accordingly.

VK: There are several innovative ways to create higher value. The approach would be to enter into a new product category, a smart way to handle SCM, which has value or has the potential to create value for the customers as well as for the organisation. We also need to strengthen the marketing team so that we know what is happening in the market around us and plan our strategies. These will be the key strengths that would help us to expand the markets, expand the base and create value by having market intelligence.

Last year, we planted almost 1.63 million trees. We plan to reach 2.60 million this year too. In fact, even the Uttarakhand forest department has also approached us to give them the saplings. They also want to plant Eucalyptus and poplar trees. It's the question of making the raw material available in order to get it at the right price. However, in the last one year, the price has been fluctuating because of international logistics, the RussiaUkraine war, factories being closed during the COVID pandemic, etc. The price is gradually becoming stable and in the next six, or seven months, it should be at a reasonable level. Coal prices have gone up which is again impacting the paper industry, as here, we need to import coal and use different types of coal. Since these are all natural resources, the price will fluctuate every two-three years and you can't do much about it, but only plan well so that it doesn't affect you much.

14 | www.papermart.in / June-July, 2022

VK: In line with changing dynamics on sustainability, the emphasis on replacing plastic in packaging products has been increasing. We have worked on the bio-PBS coating that could replace the PE coatings. Similarly, a leading FMCG Company, which is in an elite segment in their industry, approached us with a demand for a customised product. They wanted us to commission a base board that could be used as a mosquito repellent after chemical treatment at their end. Our R&D team set to work, and we were successfully able to create the product, meeting all the compliance requirements at the customer's end. We have already launched these products commercially in the market

PM: What do you think are the various challenges and stumbling blocks in the paper industry with regard to factors like raw material availability, price fluctuations of key inputs, and so on? Also, how do you think these challenges can be addressed in the future?

EYEINGMILESTONE •••••••••••••

The government has decided that by 2024, the furnace oil has to be replaced. So we are looking for alternative fuels that are environmentfriendly and do not create pollution. We have started using some amount of compressed methane gas in the plant. That, however, also has a cost element, which needs to be borne by the industry.

VK: As regards tissue paper, we are a leading player in the country and have just one competitor, but almost, 10000 –12000 tonnes of tissue paper get imported into the country. So that means there's a demand, which neither our competitor nor we have been able to fulfil. After the COVID pandemic, people have become more aware of hygiene. Similarly, the paper board segment is growing at the rate of 12 to 15 percent and expected to grow fastest in next 5 years. As gender diversity improved in urban working professionals, people are ordering more food from outside and that has increased the demand for sustainable packaging in the food industry. Moreover, with the ban on single-use plastics, paper is touted to be a possible alternative. Hence, the demand is already there; the paper industry just needs to grab this opportunity. It needs to develop new products and add more quality, strength, and rigidity to the paper. We have to see that the paper industry is on a growth trajectory and that depends on how fast the industry can adapt to the new changes and adopt new technologies in order to produce new products.

Within the next five to seven years, Century Pulp and Paper has set a target of clocking a turnover of INR 10,000 crores, which is currently around INR 3500 crores.

PM: In line with your key strengths, how will you harness the capabilities to bring in further value creation in the pulp and paper segment?

VK: Price fluctuation is not only being faced by the paper industry; rather, it is being faced by all industries. Wood availability has not been a problem, but definitely we want people to cultivate more wood. We have embarked upon giving saplings to people so that they can plant them irrespective of the fact whether they want to sell the wood to us or not as that completely depends upon the price at that particular point.

PM: Talking about the new product development, we came to know that you are trying to replace the PE coatings with bio-PBS. Also, you have made a paperboard for an FMCG company, which could be used as a mosquito repellent. Could you shed some more light on these products?

While PET bottles can still be used, the list of items that would be banned includes plastic carry bags, earbuds and balloons with plastic sticks, plastic flags, candy and ice-cream sticks, polystyrene for decoration, disposable crockery (plates, cups, glasses, forks, spoons, knives, trays), wrapping or packaging films around sweet boxes, invitation cards, and PVC banners under 100 microns.

While most analysts are bullish on paper-based products, the industry has its own risks and challenges. The prices of pulp, coal, furnace oil, chemicals, and freight rates have surged that have led to input cost pressure. Moreover, the infrastructure needs a strong push.

“The Government's recent regulation on single-use plastic is a significant step in India's sustainability journey. This has also opened up new avenues for the paper industry in India. ITC has always been at the forefront of the sustainability movement and continues to do so. We have been able to leverage our R&D capabilities to launch several paper-based alternatives in the market, with many more in the pipeline. We are also working closely with printers and end-users to help them transition to more ecofriendly substrates.” – – – – – –

The Flipkart Group, including ecommerce marketplace Flipkart and leading fashion destination, Myntra has undertaken a series of initiatives to accelerate progress towards eliminating 100 percent single-use plastic in its own supply chain by 2021 for owned and operated facilities to replace it with suitable paper-based alternatives. In the pilot phase, Flipkart's team conducted pilots to identify sustainable alternatives to reduce single-use plastics and the most efficient way of implementing them. As the program evolved, the company scaled up its processes to adopt the identified alternatives and deploy them across day-to-day operations. The invoice polybag has been replaced with recycled kraft paper pouch, airbags are replaced with shredded paper fillers, and plastic used for secondary packaging is replaced with paper bags. Also, shrink and pouches are replaced with paper stickers, and paper pouches, Inrespectively.arecentconversation

“This new ban on single-use plastic is effective from 1st July 2022 and will be closely monitored by the Central and State Pollution Control Boards, and directives have been issued at the national, state, and local government levels to withhold raw materials to industries that operate in banned items. Non-compliance with this new piece of legislation will warrant penal consequences of a fine of up to INR 100,000 or jail, or both.

adoption of eco-friendly alternatives, such as paper. I am hopeful that the paper industry will leverage this opportunity to the fullest and will give the nation a sustainable future by replacing many low utility high littering SUPs with paper-based carry bags, cups, straws and packaging material. There is an upbeat sentiment in the industry as paper is the best alternative to plastic material and is biodegradable which will allow our future generations to live in a world with lower levels of plastic pollution.

“The single-use plastic ban is going to benefit not only the paper industry but the overall environment. Be it plastic or any other material, we should be conscious of whether it is environmentally sustainable or not. We have to use it very responsibly as it is going to have a long-term impact.

Paper is highly biodegradable and environment-friendly. It has no negative impact on the environment. Replacing plastic implies more use of paper and the Indian paper industry is prepared for that and has permission. The quality and the products which we have can replace plastics, especially single-use plastics in the best possible –manner.”–––––

The largest share of single-use plastic will be taken over by paper bags. It is said, manufacturing paper bags uses 3/4th the amount of energy consumed than plastics. On top of it, this has a benefit for the environment due to the easy circularity of paper. This ban has been positive for the paper industry as another opportunity to replace singleuse plastic with paper options. However, we have to also keep in mind that to satisfy this need, an increase in capital investment in new capacity will be inevitable.”

As we turn our backs on single-use plastic, paper is one of the main contenders to take its place. Happy to note, Paper industry is gaining its value back with People realising the truth that the “paper Industry is inherently sustainable”. As the government has implemented the plastic ban-SUP from the first of July 2022, newer opportunities for the pulp and paper industries are rising. Paper companies are looking to capitalize on the plastic bans in India by bringing on greener and more sustainable alternatives for consumers.

Indian paper industry is unique in terms of its farmer-friendly approach which has always been acclaimed to generate raw material through its supported farm forestry programmes, “A New Horizon for the Paper IndustryduetoPlasticBaninIndia

With the implementation of plastic ban, the demand for disposable paper boxes, paper cups, straws, paper bags, paper cans, and other related paperbased products for food packaging will increase. By this, the paper industry is bringing on multiple alternatives for plastic products and the introduction of paper packaging solutions seems to be the next big step for the industry. Paper industry is ready to take 25 per cent market share of single-use plastic by 2025 if totally banned by the government.

Effectively, we feel that this year, we could see the market for paper-based solutions, in particular, the disposable tableware segment like paper cups, paper plates, etc., having about 25 percent upswing in growth. We expect the segment to clock 17-18 percent CAGR over the next two-three years.”

Mr. Ganesh Bhadti, Director (Operations), Seshasayee Paper and Boards Ltd.

The present ban has limited impact on SPB, but may affect the cup stock market. Thus, alternate biodegradable coating chemicals are being explored to retain the product. The new products launched like the Paper bag (kraft bags), Flora have a good market and well received. These are being considered an alternative to SUP. As a part of R&D, the other products in discussion are for the paper straw & paper mulch which are eco-friendly products.”

Though the paper/paperboard industry was always there in these segments, the ban has given the paper industry a tremendous opportunity to move ahead with encouragement, with an assured positive outcome in a potential market of about INR 85-90,000 crore.

“There are a number of emerging opportunities in the paper industry because of the plastic ban. To start with, paper straws will be extensively used as an alternative to plastic straws. These paper straws will not only be used as a substitute for straight plastic straws, but also for U-shaped straws for small aseptic liquid cartons. Moreover, paper bags have the potential to replace all kinds of plastic carry bags. At the same time, candy sticks, which are made from plastics, are also getting banned. Even the sticks of cotton earbuds, which were made from plastics, are getting replaced with paper and other biodegradable sticks. Moreover, plastic cups are getting replaced with paper cups. The cups of various sizes, including 50 ml, or even 500 ml sized cups, which are extensively found in coffee outlets like Barista and Starbucks, will be paperbased. Besides paper, the moulded pulp is also used in making food containers, and tableware. Over a period of time, the plastic food containers/tableware, in which our meals from food delivery platforms like Swiggy, Zomato, etc. are packed, would be replaced with paper-based solutions.

“Single-use plastic ban is a welcome step and a boon to protect the environment so as to give way to the normal course of nature and the chain which gets broken with the presence of polythene which causes menace to the ecosystem and becomes lethal to the organisms into which it gets entangled.

The paper industry envisages and has the capacity to favourably utilise it by about 25-30 percent by way of enhancing paper cup production, producing better quality and improved strength paper bags and bringing other innovative interventions.environment-friendlyThiswilldirectlygive a boost to the environment-friendly image of the industry.

Previously, retail markets, malls, and grocery stores were using plastic bags but now the single-use plastic bags would be replaced with paper carry bags either duplex or kraft paper and other environment-friendly packing materials. “Being one of the largest manufacturers of kraft liner board in West India, Bell Multi Kraft believes that there is a need to recycle today for a better tomorrow. The single-use plastic ban is a necessary step to reduce plastic pollution and we welcome this directive of the government. This has also opened endless opportunities for kraft paper manufacturers like us. At Bell Multi Kraft, we produce different ranges of fluting medium, testliner, kraft liner & white top liner that could be used for various market applications such as corrugated board & boxes.”

“This ban on single-use plastic was a long-awaited move that the entire country was expecting from the Government of India. Though there has been a delay, I am happy that the government has finally taken a very good decision. This is a promising time for the paper industry. The way quality of paper is improving day by day, the paper will replace plastic very soon and I don't see any hurdles in the time to come. I am very much assured that an extra quantity is going to be added to the industry. Sukraft Group is already producing food-grade paper, and we are very much ready for this brilliant move by the Government of India.”

tem, we stand by the government's directive to ban single-use plastic bags, which have harmful effects on the environment. This regulation creates further possibilities for innovative products such as biodegradable plastic that can be made from plant-based ingredients, including maize starch, that have compostable and non-polluting properties. Besides this, it is also advantageous for our business as we anticipate higher demand for paper bags as a substitute for plastic bags and subsequently a higher demand for our modified starches for the paper and packaging industry.

“This is a very welcome move from the Indian Government. A move like this, while looks and sounds like a bitter pill, impacts not only the current generation but also the generations to come. We, at Chuk (Compostables division of Yash Pakka), are working hard towards supporting the country through this shift.

To affect this, Chuk is building a network of manufacturing partners via supply of critical raw materials as well as capacity utilisation, while continuing to push the envelope on its design, technology, manufacturing, and supply capability.”

“The paper industry has bright prospects as the demand for paper bags, paper straws and other disposable paper products is set to increase with the single-use plastic ban. At Amaya Group, our mission has always been to make our environment plastic-free and give this country a better way of living. We are known to produce high-quality paper products such as paper straws, twisted handle paper bags and flat paper handle paper bags. Our biodegradable paper straws are printed with food-safe bioink and we ensure that our products remain intact, waterproof and solid for at least 12 hours. We expect to receive more orders for our products in the coming times.”

“We welcome the decision of the government in these trying times, when the world is fighting many severe challenges of not only COVID but also the economic crisis, always the problem of environment takes a back seat, but not this time. We need to understand that the rest of everything can be managed with time but the environmental issues need to be addressed with promptness and on an immediate basis. The ban will not only help in the reduction of plastic wastage but also will prevent production to a large extent. The only and best possible alternative is paper which is proven and scalable too. The paper industry is witnessing its golden era and is on the bull run today. The demand has surged and we are looking at the economy being built in the industry. We feel we should be conscious about the kind of paper being used. More recycled papers will further add up to the sustainability quotient, and Bambrew proudly uses a lot of recycled papers in its products along with Bamboo and Hemp-based papers. There are umpteen possibilities of developing paper from stubble too but we will need to organise and optimise the supply chain. Thus, yes, we foresee a great future for paper and paper products which have the potential to replace almost all SUP from the Today,environment.55percent of the waste generated in SUP comes from the packaging industry. I hope and wish to see many companies coming forward to develop the sack kraft grade papers in India soon.” – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

“The single-use plastic ban will give a boost to the pulp & paper industry and is a remarkable step in India's sustainability journey. We, at Ecosure Pulpmolding Technologies, India's 1st and largest sustainable solutions providers, offer micro pulp mills to produce in-house pulp fiber from nonwood resources using chemical-free technology and convert agro-waste into molded fiber pulp products that can replace single-use plastics. With the recent announcement on the single-use plastic ban, many companies across the country are looking for eco-friendly alternatives to plastics and we are looking forward to collaborating with them and support throughout presales, on-sales & after-sales services in terms of design engineering & consulting, capacity planning, mold selections, product quality enhancement, installation, and commissioning of the plant not limited to tableware but also in protective packaging, medical dispoware, and other pulp molded utility articles.”

“Ever since the Plastic-Ban has come into effect, the pulp and paper industry has become the ultimate replacement source. The industry has been getting a variety of enquiries from all sectors, including – FMCG, electrical & engineering, and HORECA, to name a few.

“Paper has always been a more environment-friendly alternative to single-use plastic in many applications, with more and more environmentconscious users gradually moving towards it globally. With the recent government ban on several single-use plastic items, we expect the momentum to accelerate further. This will give rise to significant opportunities for the Paper Industry, and we expect the demand forpaperto increase inexisting applications, and also in newer ones.”

Badruka Exim deals with all of these paper product offerings and is committed to continuously diminish the share of SUPs in the market by playing a crucial link between paper mills and our customers, as well as end users. We as an organisation have always believed and advocated paper and paper products as the future of sustainability and we are here to promote and grow these paper products as successful SUP substitutes to ensure the growth of the paper industry and to tackle the pollution caused by these plastic products on our beautiful planet.”

Mr. Bhavesh Gala, Hon. Secretary, FPTA, and Director, Infinity Industries Pvt. Ltd.

“The countrywide ban on single-use plastics including the manufacturing, usage and imports is certainly beneficial for the whole community, environment, and the future generations. In the recent past, we have witnessed the transition of several FMCG companies, e-commerce majors, etc. toward sustainable or paper-based packaging materials. This recent move by the government will further give an impetus to this favorable trend. Moreover, the paper industry and the whole corrugated boards industry will greatly benefit and grow further as an outcome of the recent restraint on the usage of plastics.”

“The impact of the single-use plastic ban would be positive on the paper industry. It would increase the demand for paper by approximately 3 to 4 lakh tonnes per annum. As the paper mills gear up to fulfill the requirements in the domestic market, it would give more businesses to local paper traders like us. Paper would soon be replacing plastic straws, plastic food plates, and plastic cups. The packaging used by food delivery services such as Swiggy and Zomato would also be paper-based in the coming times. We will soon see papers of higher GSM. Also, PE coating would be replaced by recyclable barrier coating.”

Mr. Pradyumna Bangur, Director, Raj Dealers & Distributors

Mr. Sanjeev Sureka, President, MPCBMA

The R&D team at the mill is working closely with the customers to develop sustainable and eco-friendly solutions for replacement. Segments like moulded grade pulp tableware, paper straws, high BF carry bags, and primary & secondary packaging in the FMCG products, have already started using paper-based solutions. In these changing times, we foresee the Indian pulp and paper industry to be playing an instrumental role in a GREEN and CLEAN future. There will be some bottlenecks and critical issues to address, but that is what happens in revolutionary times! We are fortunate to be a part of this whole CHANGE.”

Mr. Rohit Pandit, Secretary-General, Indian Paper Manufacturers Association (IPMA)

“The government's decision and implementation to ban single use plastic items from July 1, 2022 was a vital step towards sustainability. Our environmental quality is to gain in the long run and so will the Indian paper industry and its stakeholders. The paper industry has already started innovating and experimenting with substitutes for SUP items in all industry verticals with successful paper products already in the market. Almost all the major Indian paper and board manufacturers have a diversified product mix to cater to this large market that had been dominated by SUP items for the longest time. These include paper straws, paper sticks for ear buds and confectioners, water (aqueous coated) based paper cups instead of polycoating, high strength kraft paper for carry bags, ecommerce bags and pouches and there is even a substitute for bubble wrap in paper form that can be used to wrap fragile glassware and jars.

Our aim was to replace single-use plastics which eventually end up in landfills causing untold damage to the environment and human health. We had three key priorities with safety being thefirst, i.e.,whateverthecompanycreatesshould besafefor people and planet. Our second priority was to be purposedriven and create positive impact. We have generated employment by creating an industry that never existed before. Moreover, women constitute about 30 percent of the team. PM: What would be your message to young women, who would want to follow similar footsteps?

The industry is quite male-centric but I must admit that I have never had any difficulty with that – in fact, I have been fortunate to have such strong, close relationships with all my customersandenjoythateventoday.

JS: It's true that the paper industry is perceived as less attractive and this can be a challenge to attract talent to the industry. Most paper mills are located in remote areas and travelling to these sites and getting reasonably good hotels was quite a challenge. However, this has been improving rapidly and we now have many of these areas getting connected by flight too. But I have enjoyed the experience thoroughlyandithashelpedmetoevolveasastrongerperson. I havealsobeenveryfortunatetohaveworked withverygood organisations throughout my career spanning across erstwhile Cibaand then BASF and nowat Archroma. I would like to give credit to my team and industry associates who havehelpedmyjourneytobesuccessfulandenjoyable.

PM: Paper mills are generally located in remote areas and considered less lucrative than other sectors. What are your thoughts?

JS: The paper industry in India has various challenges faced on raw material, energy and infrastructure costs. Despite paper being a sustainable product, the paper industry is still perceived as a polluting and resource-guzzling industry. We have seen the industry has been working on thesechallenges continuously and have come a long way to make paper makingmoresustainable.

JS: My journey in the last 25 years in the area of specialty chemicals and largely in the paper industry has been very enriching and fulfilling. I had not planned to be part of the paper industry but have had the opportunity to work in this industryandhavereallyenjoyedmyjourneyhere.

PM: Could you shed some light on the future potential for the pulp & paper industry along with the key trends that are catalysing the growth of the market?

The Indian paperindustryisthefastest-growing papermarketintheworld. The packaging industry is booming and we can see so many new plants coming up. MM: The plastic is now banned and the government will be stricter related to the environment. With that, there lies a huge opportunity for the paper and the textile sector. The challenge is that the paper has to be more advanced to hold the liquid product. None of the products come without packaging. And even in that packaging, one needs togive the manualwhichisagaininthepaperform.

While COVID brought education to digital forms, the education system in India cannot be completely online. It bringshealthissuestokidsinthelong term, andasaparent, I would never want that for the children. Education, in the offlinemode, needsbooks. Hence, therearehugeopportunities in the paper industry. Even as we go to a restaurant or travel inatrain, wewanttohavefood indisposableplatesthat could be thrown. However, we should look forward for more recycled raw materials in the production and reduce the use ofwoodortreesintheproductionprocess.

Regarding the challenges, the competition is tough in the paper industry. Initially, it was easier to understand the dynamics and grow in the paper industry. Hence, a lot of peopleventured into the industry. In 2012-13, the rules were more lenient. However, presently, the government has come up with stringent rules in the direction of their responsibilities towards the environment, and society. This has significantly brought down the profit margin of paper mills. Additionally, after the COVID-19- pandemic, the market has also given them other set of challenges. The positive part is the opening of the global markets. While China has been dominant in the market, the Indian paper industry can also grow significantly if the Indian government provides support and increases the opportunities of paperand paperproductexportstodifferentcountries. This can enable the paper industry to have better profitability. Further, the employment opportunities in the industry wouldalsogrow.

Most of the paper mill owners know our organisation, and they personally know me as well. I am, at present, managing the entire India operation. I'm the single woman here, and around 250 men, of differentexpertise, areworking with me. Treating wastewater is not an easy task as it requires a lot of expertise – the knowledgeof biology, chemistry, mechanical, electrical, civil instrumentation, and automation. Hence, you require a diverse team. I get calls from paper companies when they have the challenges in their treatment plant. I provide them with the solutions on phone, messages, or throughtechnicalvisits.

PM: What are your views on the Indian paper industry in terms of challenges and opportunities?

PM: Paper mills are generally located in remote areas and considered less lucrative than other sectors. What are your thoughts?

MM: In most of the seminars, conferences, and workshops, I happen to be the only woman sitting. People normally get surprised to see me lead it because they all know it is a field work. Women are sensitive, loyal, dedicated to their pursuits, and have the grip and study a lot; however, they have been reluctant to join the paper and water treatment industries because it entails field work. Also, the industry has been reluctant to bring morewomen at the factory level since safety is a concern. Managing the workforce was initially a challenge for me as I lacked the confidence. However, with the experience I have gained over theyears, I have acquired the necessary skills. Now, if they approach me with their water and wastewater problems, I have answers to their queries. With time, I have earned the respectandconfidence.

MM: I had a difficult journey. The ownerof the company Mr. Bob Behari stays in Canada and it was difficult to manage his business in India from there. He had seen issues like water logging and otherproblems in Indiaand wanted todo his bit for his motherland, which is why he came up with a natural biotechnology product. In the early 2000s, the industry, as well as the government, was in a transition phase. I took up the control here in 2012. The industries were all located in remote areas and I had to travel for meetings. Moreover, nobody was interested in treating the water because they didn't feel that itwas needed. Thanks tothegovernmentthat came in 2014! The first thing they did was to work for the rivers. During 2013-2014, CPCB had implemented a 'Charter forWaterRecyclingand PollutionPreventioninPulp&Paper Industries in Ganga River Basin' in five identified clusters locatedinUttarakhandandUttarPradesh.Themillsadopted a positive approach and made huge investments to support theentirecharter. A lotof effortshad tobemadeinspreading awareness regarding the chemicals and online monitoring Isystems.appreciate that the paper mill owners are very positive and high-spirited. Since I have been closely working with them for a while, I have seen the financial challenges they underwent. While the government came up with tight rules, they did notcomeupwiththepertinentsolutions.Thecharterwas new and the people were confused. They knew about their paper product but were unaware about the pollution it creates and the preventive measures required. This is where wecameintothepicture!

PM: What would be your message to young women, who would want to follow similar footsteps?

MM: Since the paper industry is water intensive; it needs a bigger land – i.e., extra space for putting up the treatment plant. This is why the mill owners look forward to cheaper lands, which are available in the remote areas. As paper mills work 24x7, the women are reluctant to join and even I have been reluctant to hire them as women safety still remains a huge concern. However, that is not the case for every paper mill. As paper units are old, they're mostly located in the Ganga and river basin states. While initially these were remote, the cities have emerged and the population around the paper plants have grown by 60 to 70 percent. Recently, thegovernment hascome upwith a lotof plans regarding land allocation, infrastructure, transportation, electricity, digitalisation, GST, MSME, start up funds, environmental and safety norms for the industrial units to create an environment for ease of doing responsible business. Thiswill encourage morewomen to joinat factory level forwork.

PM: In brief, tell us about your journey that led you to this industry along with your experience.

WhenIstarted myjourney, IwasstressedthatIwasresponsible not only for me but for over 100 other workers too. However, the more I learned, the morepowerful I became. I understand safety isaconcern forwomenwherethe governmentcan helpto facilitatewomenworkforce. If that is addressed, more women would be coming out in the field to work.Wecancertainlydowonders!

MM: Initially after independence, we have multiplied in all directions; however, it was not a well-planned, focused, and balanced development. Thecurrentgovernment is focussing on making businesses across various industries into more focused, productive, and responsible by channelizing in every direction. Since I am in the water industry, I have experience of working in association with several industries such as sugar, textile, dairy, paper, and so on. In my opinion, the paper industry, at present, is a highly advanced industry. The paper industry professionals are technically more educated, qualified, and positively co-relate with each other to make the industry units technically and technologically Theadvanced.government should initiate planning for making the industry well-organised for a better future. The paper industry should come under a specific ministry. With a plannedapproach, I foreseeahumongousopportunityinthe Indian paper industry. We are more advanced than many othercountriesand haveampleresources. Being highlywater intensive, the paper mills cannot be set up in a region or a country that doesn't have significant water sources. If the government makes a plan to export the paper products in such countries, the companies in India would have huge opportunities. I hope that magazines like Paper Mart can bridge the gap between the government and the paper industry.

We all have studied the Tortoise and a Rabbit story in the childhood. The moral of the story was that we all can win the race by consistently working hard in the focused direction as theTortoisedid. ¢

Paper Mart: Could you present a brief overview of your company and its product portfolio along with your day-to-day life in the organisation?

YP: Paper consumption in India is expected to grow at a rate of 6-7 percent annually, with predictions of reaching 30 million tons by 2027. Some key contributing factors to this growth include the increased emphasis on education and literacy, the boom in organised retail (e.g., supermarkets, department stores), and the evolution of e-commerce (e.g., Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra). Although India is the second most populated country in the world, the current per capita paper consumption in India is only 13kg compared to the global averageof 57kg. These numbers highlight that there is an exponential potential for growth and the importance of the Indian pulp and paper industry to capitalise on these key trendsinthecomingyears.

PM: Could you shed some light on the future potential for the pulp & paper industry along with the key trends that are catalysing the growth of the market?

PM: Paper is a predominantly male-centric industry. What are the challenges you strive to overcome every day?

SS: The biggestopportunityforthepaperindustry istheurge to find a replacement for plastic in India, mainly in the packaging sector. This calls for a high demand for board and kraft paper due to the increasing trend of online shopping and home-delivered food for instance. On the other hand, thechallengeistheavailabilityof rawmaterialsasmostof the packing paper is produced from waste paper. Due to less recovery percentage of waste paper in the country, India is mostlydependenton importedwastepaperwhichcomesasa huge burden on production (in the producer's pocket). The scenario has worsened in the last two years due to the pandemic and later, the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The prices of raw materials have increased drastically due to freight issues and higher dollar exchange rates. Thus, the margins of the paper mills have seen a significant decline as there has not been an appreciable rise in the selling price which could have compensated for the rise in raw material cost. Presently, the procurement and selling in the industry for both paper makers and machine manufacturers have become analogous to dealing in the share market due to the unpredictable fluctuations in the prices. Moreover, the enormous rise in fuel costs has totally disturbed the conversioncostofproduction. But as quoted, necessity is the mother of all inventions; our focus should remain on converting these challenges into an opportunity to grow technologically. For example, many mills have opted for plastic boilers with the required norms and pollution regulations. At the same time, we are seeing much advancement in the effluent treatment plants consideringtheimportanceof waterasoneof themajorresourcesin such a water-intensive industry. These will be the backbone of thepaper industry if weare to move towardsagro & virginbasedpaperduetotheunavailabilityofwastepaper.Theneed of the hour is to have a balance of production and environAlso,ment-friendlyprocesses.transformingchallenges into opportunities could be the present situation of newsprint production worldwide. Trends and their Effects on Different Grades

The European paper industry adds EUR 21 billion to Europe's GDP every year.

Cepi annual statistics are developed by an in-house dedicated team and cover the countries represented by the Confederation of European Paper Industries. They are based on data collected from national associations, in between other indicators, on production and consumption. The data quality check is performed following an EU methodology, and the data is audited annually.

Resilience and Recovery

The crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic also accelerated certain trends, observed over the past decade. The rise of e-commerce boosted the paper and board packaging market, while it benefited from the substitution of other solutions, often triggered by the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive.

For the paper and board consumed, the recycling rate was 71.4 percent.

The production of packaging grades reached an all-time high in 2021, increasing by 7.5 percent compared to 2020. The most impressive growth was registered for the production of wrapping grades, used for paper bag production, which increased by 11.6 percent. It benefitted from the EUbacked phase-out of plastic packaging.

The production of paper & board recovered from the recent instability and increased by 1.5 percent over the first 4 months of 2022. With a more stable demand from publishers, offices and commercial printing, the overall output of graphic grades grew by 1.7 percent. The production of sanitary and household grades increased by 1.0 percent with the gradual recovery of the 'away-fromhome' market. The production of speciality paper and board has increased by 2.7 percent.

Another COVID-related effect on paper markets has been the development of the hygiene market segments. Demand for paper for sanitary uses has seen a correction effect, with the peak of the pandemic now behind us, and it should benefit from higher hygiene requirements over the long term. Graphic paper markets have, after a very negative impact in 2020, bounced back in 2021. Speciality paper & board production grew significantly by 2.7 percent, but with heterogeneous developments according to segments.

P Balakrishnan: BASF has a comprehensive state-of-the-art R&D facility in the innovation campus in Shanghai and in Mumbai, where we are able to carry out cross-functional research and development projects. In conjunction with this, we also have wide experience and in-depth knowledge of paper coating and its impact on the final coated paper & board properties of high-speed printing and converting. This unique combination enables BASF to have innovations/developments to offer step-forward technology for developing high premium grade lattices. In our solution, we want to provide a step-forward change in our latex. New technologies and innovative technical approaches are incorporated into the development of these lattices. For example, on the compliance and foodsafety front, while keeping abreast with regulatory changes, we identified and eliminated non permitted food contact additives for compliance and odour impact in the final product. This development has benefited the high-end segment coated grades. High solids latex is very rare in the paper coating industry due to its unique challenges in inherent viscosity and latex stability.

PB: Indian paper industry has huge potential growth in the coming years. The pandemic has shown consumers the convenience of working from home. There has been a drastic need for food packaging. Also, e-commerce will increase immensely. In addition to this, the recent single-use plastic ban will drive innovation for sustainability more rapidly. As one of the leading suppliers and partners of choice of the coated paper and board industry, BASF is well positioned on the technological front, as well as a wider portfolio range to support growth and address customers' challenges.

www.papermart.in / June-July, 2022 | 69 new development, sustainable topcoat latex will have solids content of more than 55 percent. This step-forward approach would have a positive impact on technical performance and huge commercial advantages.

After a lot of trials, Shree Krishna Paper Mills & Industries launched brown A4 PackMate copier paper that uses almost 10 litres per tonne of paper less water as compared to white A4 copier paper. So when you use brown PackMate copier paper, you save almost 0.5 litres of water per ream! simply due to the fact the government of all the nations has taken the plastic ban very seriously. The shift from plastic to paper is not just based on the material change; it is based on the cost change as well. Plastic is the cheapest product out there and the most durable. Paper on the other hand is an expensive alternative and is always going to play a part in decisionmaking, especially for smaller Wecompanies.allhave been hearing about the ban on plastic not only in India but in various countries worldwide. India has always been a follower, not a leader when it comes to policies, particularly regarding sustainability and the environment. Various countries have already banned singleuse plastic across the globe, following which India too took the final step in 2022. However, due to the size of the population, no policy is easy to execute. Even when the single-use plastic ban is being implementedcustomers have moved to the closest cheaper alternative - non-woven bags. We at, Shree Krishna Paper Mills & Industries, have always thought to innovate and bring forth solutions that help the environment. The need for high-strength kraft papers is on the rise when companies like Amazon, and Flipkart want to develop alternate suppliers in India. Currently, all high BF papers come from Europe and India is unable to consistently provide good quality paper. Owing to the developments in India, mills have undertaken to be a long-term supplier for high BF papers. Recently, Shree Krishna Paper Mills & Industries Ltd. (SKPMIL) developed 45 BF paper. The paper we managed to produce is 4 times consistently achieving the same BF and results. We do realise without good quality pulp, we cannot manufacture this quality of the paper. The real key is to manufacture again and again getting the same results. We are happy that we were able to do that. A few years ago, CSR only meant that companies would provide donations from the profits to less privileged areas. Today, CSR has taken on a larger meaning. It was at the Paperex 2022 when we launched recycled brown notepads as souvenirs for our customers coming to visit the stall, which got great feedback - we started working on the idea of B2C products. After a lot of trials, we launched our brown A4 copier paper that uses almost 10 litres per tonne of paper less water as compared to white A4 copier paper. So when you use brown PackMate copier paper, you save almost 0.5 litres of water per ream. It has got amazing feedback from the market and we are already getting repeat orders. Also, when you use PackMate copier paper, you save yourself almost 15-20 percent cost as compared to white A4 copier paper. Our product range is based on the vision that brown is the new white! Brown denotes eco-friendliness; brown denotes sustainability and brown denotes our mother naturethe colour of mitti. We hope to make PackMate notebooks, notepads, envelopes, and gift wrapping papers a household name and make a real connection with the mindset that every person can save the planet - not by hugging a tree but by using PackMate products which save water.
