P

aper Mart interviewed Mr. A. S. Mehta, President, JK Paper Limited to get apprised on the significant event, i.e. the acquisition and revival of Sirpur Paper Mills. Excerpts:

Paper Mart: Please update us with the developments so far on the acquisition of Sirpur Paper Mills limited. A.S. Mehta: On August 2, 2018, JK Paper has completed the acquisition of Sirpur paper Mills limited. The acquisition costing Rs 371 Cr will add

I•N•T•E•R•V•I•E•W

1.40 Lac tonnes per annum to the capacity of JK Paper taking it to 6.00 Lac tones per annum. JK is now all set to revive the sick mill.

PM: What is the nature of the takeover? Give us the financial figures related to the acquisition. ASM: Under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), this acquisition is a full acquisition and we have control over the mill after paying the agreed amount in the resolution plan, i.e. Rs 371 Cr. Out of total outlay of Rs. 728 Cr for reviving the mill, the resolution plan is of Rs. 371 Cr, and the rest will be invested in modernizing the mill. This includes payments towards settlement of financial creditors, corporate insolvency resolution process cost, admitted operational creditors, workmen and employees. Out of Rs 371 Cr, Rs 166 Cr has been deposited in the banks as one time cash payment, Rs 43 Cr is the equity capital to the banks, and Rs. 162 Cr is the preference capital issued to banks to be redeemed after 20 years. The entire money was paid on August 2, 2018, and in return, we received the letter of possession on August 2, 2018. In our resolution plan, you may notice that we have given some equities to the banks too. JK Paper wanted their holding in this company for the sake of relationship continuity.

PM: Tell us the JK's thought or business strategy behind going for such an acquisition as SPML? ASM: For the Indian paper industry, this is a phase of consolidation, which is likely to continue for some more years to come, creating a situation where smaller and inefficient units would make way for larger and more efficient units. JK however would not be a part of a consolidation as far as smaller units are concerned as its strength lies in high quality segments such as maplitho, copier, premium packaging board, etc. We target only those units

whose volume, product, and quality may fit in these segments and match JK's standards. If such units are being run inefficiently or are sick, they present suitable opportunities for JK to take over and revive them by infusing efficiency and structured remodeling. JK's core competence lies in low cost and efficient manufacturing, which it can leverage to create value. Sirpur Paper Mills Limited (SPML) fitted the above bill absolutely and we went ahead to acquire it. SPML was shut down primarily because of inefficient operations and high raw material cost involved. Besides, some inbuilt inefficiencies and lack of funds were also responsible for rendering the mill unviable. Now, JK is going to run the same unit and hopes to make it financially viable soon. Before Sirpur, JK contemplated on acquiring BILT and Century at different point of times but proposals didn't fructify. We thereafter earmarked Sirpur. With assured support from the Govt., JK is sure to make a successful turnaround for SPML.

PM: Apart from what you just mentioned, there must be some other tangible factors which made SPML fit for acquisition. What are those? ASM: Of course, there are! Foremost is the favorable location, a reason for our strong interest in the Sirpur mill. Singareni Coal Mines are very near to the mill which will ensure uninterrupted coal supply at lesser logistics cost. The unit is in close proximity to the raw material belt and the availability of water is also not a concern. The area around SPML is good for plantation and we intend to launch a fullfledged plantation program in the area by next year. For last 5 years, JK's strategy has been centered on plantations to achieve raw material security. We have fairly succeeded in our plantation efforts and now get sufficient wood from our own catchment.

Raw material availability has been an important factor in our profitability. We plan to replicate that success for SPML too. Besides, Govt.'s incentives and concessions have been a big push for us to consider this acquisition. Without those, making the mill financially viable would have been impossible. If we combine JK's core competencies with the supportive environment that the Govt. has provided, we are sure of making things work.

PM: How crucial are the govt.'s incentives to JK for facilitating the revival of the mill? ASM: The incentives and the concessions have been extended by the government with the sole objective that the unit may run with commercial viability. We signed an understanding with the government only after these incentives were agreed upon. These incentives have been extended to the mill for a period of 10 years. In 10 years time, the mill will become self sufficient and will not need any further co n ce s s i o n s. T h e raw m a te r i a l procurement and coal supply are all part of the concessions and benefits given by the government.

PM: How will SPML be accommodated in JK's corporate structure, as a standalone entity or to be merged in JK as a brand? Once the production starts, how would you market the products, i.e. as SPML products, or JK products? ASM: Sirpur Paper Mills Ltd will remain as it is for the time being. Sirpur will be held by JK Paper as its subsidiary. As far as branding and sales strategies are concerned, we need to be careful in adopting practices without disturbing the JK brand and quality expected thereunder. Major products of SPML will continue as they were while some may get the JK tag depending on whether they qualif y the minimum quality standards of JK. But

I•N•T•E•R•V•I•E•W

for that, we first need to assess what quality comes out of the unit once it's operational. However, as part of the branding strategy, there will be efforts to continue Sirpur brand for most of the products. There will be full synergy of the sales and marketing between the companies. JK has a well established distribution network, which it intends to leverage fully to sell SPML's products. We have our own sales setup across the country and Sirpur unit will be using the same.

PM: Tell us something of the corporate synergy expected of this acquisition. ASM: The first synergy is that SPML is going to get an expansive sales, marketing, and distribution network from JK. This is a great synergy, as far as SPML is concerned, for pushing its products through a well-established channel without incurring any major cost or effort. The second synergy may be in the area of corporate procurement. JK has a well-laid corporate procurement function, which would handle the SPML requirements also. The other significant synergy is management synergy, which will assist in revamping the overall organizational and operational structure of SPML, where the manufacturing corecompetence of JK Paper would be used optimally to drive sustained growth of this unit.

PM: When are we going to see Sirpur up and running? Also, what product grades are we going to expect? ASM: To my mind, our target is around 5-6 months to commence the production. Sirpur unit used to make varieties of writing-printing paper including maplitho and other special

grades, JK will continue with majority of them. SPML was also making p a c k a g i n g a n d w ra p p i n g p a p e r including duplex board; we will resume their production also. In other words, whatever they were producing, we will also produce. Our maplitho volume will double after supplemented by Sirpur's production. JK, in its product range, doesn't have coloured paper, which it would now from Sirpur unit. In ledger paper also, we don't produce certain varieties and GSM, which we are going to get from the Sirpur unit. Overall, the production from SPML is going to supplement and complement with the existing portfolio of JK Paper very well.

PM: As part of the total outlay meant for reviving SPML, a major amount is going to be channeled into modernizing the mill. Can we have a glimpse of what are you going to do in terms of technological reforms? ASM: Some of the paper machines will need to be modernized and modified. Since the factory was shut for four years, we need to perform major overhauling and debottlenecking of the machines. The mill's capacity is 140,000 tonnes per annum, but it has never produced more than 99,000 tonnes per annum. That means there are some inherent issues, which we need to figure out and fix. We intend to remove all such bottlenecks to achieve 100 percent capacity utilization. This will be done in the Phase I of revamp plan. There are some issues with the efficiency of the power division, which is a critical section in order to provide optimum running efficiency to the mill. This unit was not planned in a way that could lead to energy efficiency. We are going to put a high-efficiency boiler

10 | www.papermart.in / August - September 2018

in the mill along with a turbine. We are going to focus much on the power block, so much so that it would become almost new. This is a part of Phase II. These jobs would be taken up simultan e o u s ly w i t h t h e re f u rb i s h i n g, debottlenecking, and modernization of the paper machines. We are going to build an ECF based fiber line for improved pulp quality with least pollution load. Besides, there would be a new electrostatic precipitator (ESP) and a complete online monitoring system to keep track of and control various environmental variables. The revived mill is going to be environmentally compliant in every respect. All these things and some others have been taken care of in our CapEx of Rs 350-400 Cr. The major amount of this outlay, however, is going to be spent in installing the high pressure boiler and the new turbine.

PM: Is there any plan for increase in the capacity of SPML, or any other Greenfield expansion plan? ASM: Our first intent is to utilize 100 percent of SPML and manufacture 140,000 tonnes of various grades of paper. As of now, there is no such plan. JK will keep growing and increasing its capacity either through acquisition or expansion. Through acquisition (of SPML), we have already added 140,000 tonnes per annum in total capacity. Through expansion, we are going a h e a d w i t h a p a c k a g i n g b o a rd Greenfield project of 150,000 tonnes per annum in Gujarat. In addition to a 150,000 tonne board machine, the facility in Gujarat is going to have a refurbished pulp mill along with captive power plant. The capex for the whole project is planned to the tune of Rs. 1450 Cr. The time period for this project is around 30 months, including environment clearances.

Emami About to Begin Work on 200,000 TPA Packaging Board Plant in Gujarat In two months time, Emami Mr. P.S. Patwari, Executive Director, Emami Paper Mills Ltd

is set to commence work on its Greenfield packaging board project in Gujarat. The Group sees the current phase of growth in packaging a good sign for the industry to put capacities.

P

aper Mart talked to Mr. P.S. Patwari, Executive Director, Emami Paper Mills Ltd to know the developments on the planned board project in Gujarat. Mr. Patwari also divulged during the interview that the Group intends to increase the capacities in existing units of packaging board and newsprint to 200,000 tonnes and 150,000 tonnes respectively by the end of this year.

I•N•T•E•R•V•I•E•W

Paper Mart: Please tell us about the new expansion plans.

unit? What is the raw material scenario?

P.S. Patwari: We are in the middle of a major expansion in Gujarat. We are setting up a new packaging board mill with an annual capacity of 200,000 tonnes. The land has already been acquired and all the formalities and clearances from Govt. Authorities have been completed. The civil work on the new plant is expected to commence within the next 2 months. The orders for machines and equipment are underway to be completed within next 30 days, immediately after which we would start the work on the mill site.

PSP: There is more than 100 percent capacity utilization in our mills.

PM: Tell us something about the technologies that you have planned for the new plant? PSP: Emami is an extremely brand conscious group with an uncompromising attitude towards product q u a l i t y a n d a b s o l u te c u s to m e r satisfaction. As a result, we have been constantly making products which are internationally competitive withstanding all the conceivable quality standards, be it consumer boards or other products within the segment. Such quality commitment is unthinkable without cutting-edge technology, which remain our unwavering priority for the new mill also. We are going for a combination of technologies, which are the best world over. The Board machine would be a mix of European and Asian solutions, the critical parts and major equipment coming from Europe's leading suppliers. Environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, and least resource consumption are the central considerations for selecting the technologies for the new plant.

PM: Is your current capacity being fully utilized? Is there any capacity increase planned for the existing

We are further increasing the capacity for both packaging board and newsprint. At the end of this year, we intend to achieve a capacity of 200,000 tonnes in packaging board and 150,000 tonnes in newsprint. For raw material, we will be working more on the imported pulp, imported wastepaper, and local wastepaper.

PM: The newsprint market is now doing very well. What are your thoughts on that? Also, do you plan any expansion on the newsprint side? PSP: Newsprint is doing very well mainly because of China, who has stopped importing inferior quality of wastepaper. This has created a shortage of newsprint and shooting up the prices. The Chinese Govt. has become quite uncompromising in its environmental dealings creating opportunites for the papermakers in India and other countries. The Greenfield expansion in Gujarat is already under process. Once this project completes and stabilizes, we would think of any other, for instance newsprint. It will take almost 2 years or more to commission the Gujarat project.

PM: With all the expansions lined up on the packaging front, what are your thoughts on market? Is the market ready to consume this much capacity? PSP: There is a big growth in packaging. In the high-end segment, the growth is in double digits. We are in the high-end segment for which the base is very small. Every year there is an additional requirement of over 100,000

tonnes for the high-end packaging board. These types of capacities so far have not been announced and will take some time to get fully implemented. The demand is also supply driven. Once the supply is increased, the demand follows and matches the supply. I don't think the industry is going to face challenge on account of capacities being created on high-end packaging segment. In fact, these capacities are needed for the growth of the industr y and more such capacities would be announced in future. For instance, we have planned at least two such expansions in Gujarat. We have the infrastructure and have acquired enough land in case we announce such other capacities in future. The area we have acquired is adequate for producing 500,000600,000 tonnes of paper and board. We are putting only 200,000 tonnes for now. We will install another board machine once the ongoing project is completed. There is undoubtedly a good demand and growth in the packaging board sector.

PM: Would you like to give any advice to your peers in the industry on the market front? PSP: Yes! The market is very good and others should also avail the opportunity and expand as much as they can. They should focus equally on the products, quality, and service, which we at Emami Papers do. We have gained immensely from these practices, giving us courage and capability to expand further. The focus on technology is equally crucial for responsible manufacturing keeping e nv i ro n m e n t a l co m p l i a n ce a n d regulations in view. We need to strictly follow the prescribed consumption and environmental standards in order to avoid future troubles.

TRENDSPOTTING | ENERGY REDUCTION

Practical Strategies to Reduce Pulp and Paper Mill Energy Use

Flambeau River Papers in Park Falls, Wisconsin, USA.

Energy expert Richard Reese outlines the energy audit process, and shares strategies identified by mills that have reached their energy reduction goals.

I

t is difficult to plan more than a couple of years out when it comes to energy sources. This leaves frustrated mill managers with one solution: use as little energy as possible. Using less energy eliminates other problems such as qualifying for rebates, discounts, or tax breaks. It's a neverending exercise—one can go through a mill thoroughly one year and come back two years later and find significant savings again.1 All pulp and paper mills offer energy reduction opportunities, but company and mill culture are critical to developing an effective energy reduction program. The best corporate energy programs have excellent management support (including the mill manager), include special capital funds for energy reduction projects, and require solid interdepartmental coordination. Energy auditors can benchmark energy

1. A kickoff meeting to review preliminary information and develop a schedule for the mill visit. The team agreed on a goal of identifying energy reduction projects that would provide more than US$ 500,000 in annual energy savings. 2. Completion of paper machine energy scorecards to benchmark energy performance and identify energy reduction opportunities. These scorecards are Excel worksheets with questions related to energy performance, equipment, and operating procedures that affect energy use. Overall energy scorecard scores were 44 percent for one PM and 41 percent for another. The lowest scores were for energy monitoring, the grade scorecard, compressed air, and water systems. (The average score for PMs producing all grades is 50 percent.) 3. Review of previous studies of refining, clothing supplier reports, and compressed air system. 4. Machine walk-arounds and process measurements with portable instrumentation. 5. Working lunches with mill personnel to better understand operating procedures, discuss potential energy reduction projects, and develop a prioritized action list. The action list included 34 projects, including 10 “Priority 1” projects that could be easily implemented; 11 projects that required more time and investigation; and 13 projects that would require more investigation and capital funds.

performance and identify energy reduction opportunities, but mill personnel must buy in and make recommended changes. Several paper mills in Wisconsin have achieved significant energy use reductions with technical assistance and financial incentives from Focus on Energy and the US Department of Energy. Some paper mills would have shutdown without implementing recommended energy reduction projects. Table 1 shows a few common discoveries during paper machine energy evaluations. Many of the energy reduction opportunities identified are “low hanging fruit” that can be implemented without capital expenditures. Taking measurements with portable instrumentation during energy evaluations is important. Use of a portable flow meter during a recent evaluation identified several energy reduction opportunities that operating personnel were not aware of. An example is monitoring cooling water f low and temperatures around paper machine dryer condensers. Steam flow to condensers is often much higher than best practice.

Energy Evaluation Case History In April 2015, a Wisconsin mill with specialty paper machines completed an energy evaluation. The energy evaluation process included:

generation cost. A boiler score card was added to paper machine energy score cards in 2016 (see Step 2 of the process above.)

7. A report summarizing the energy evaluation.

Table 2 shows common discoveries in pulp mill and bleach plant energy evaluations; Table 3 shows common opportunities found in boiler audits; and Tables 4A and B list opportunities found in power generation audits.

Mill management assigned an energy project coordinator to lead evaluation and implementation of the recommended energy reduction projects. Mill personnel reviewed all of the actions identified in the energy evaluation and implemented most of them. The actions included four areas that needed more detailed evaluations (a mill water system study, steam and condensate system evaluation, paper machine room air balance, and a vacuum system study.)All four of these studies identified significant energy reduction opportunities that mill personnel decided to implement. Focus on Energy provided incentives to pay one half the costs of all four studies. Some of the major projects implemented after the energy evaluation included:

Ÿ Installed equipment to permit use of filtered whitewater

Catherine DeVyre, an Australian business consultant, has stated, “The six most expensive words in business are 'We've always done it that way'.” This adage certainly applies in pulp and paper mills. There are many myths related to energy use in pulp and paper mills that are sustained year after year. Many of these misunderstandings actually make it easier to find energy reduction opportunities in pulp and paper mills. (Reference 5 has a long list of pulp and paper mill energy myths.)

New Technologies The Focus on Energy pulp and paper team continuously tracks new technologies that have potential to reduce energy

on wet end showers on both paper machines.

Ÿ Installed energy-efficient pulper rotors in several stock preparation system pulpers.

Ÿ Installed high efficiency side-entry agitators in stock chests.

Ÿ Inefficient use of high temperature waste heat sources

Ÿ Modified the mill compressed air system and lowered

Ÿ Excessive use of hot water resulting in low hot water

Ÿ Installed managed differential pressure control on the dryer steam and condensate systems. In early 2018, the mill conducted a follow-up energy evaluation. Annual energy savings realized since the 2015 audit exceeded the goal of US$ 500,000. The mill has received over US$ 650,000 in Focus on Energy incentive payments since 2013. Energy scorecard scores increased from 44 to 53 percent on one machine, and from 41 to 52 percent on another machine. The biggest improvements were on the compressed air scorecard, agitators and pumps, press sections, and energy monitoring. The mill recently enrolled in the Focus on Energy Strategic Energy Monitoring program, which will include development of a mill energy model and improvement in energy measurements. The team developed a new energy action list of 36 items during the follow-up energy evaluation. The new actions had few easy-to-implement changes and include some major capital projects. The proactive stance to reduce energy use taken by mill personnel has made the mill more energy-efficient and competitive.

Departmental Interactions Effective interactions between the paper mill and other mill areas are important to optimize overall mill energy performance. For example, pulp mills usually have excess heat; transfer of heat to the PMs permits reducing team use to heat white water in the paper mill. Interactions with the boiler plant are also important since condensate return from the paper machines and other interactions are important in optimizing team

temperature and high steam use

Ÿ Very high bleach plant steam use (hot water heating and steam mixers)

Ÿ Waste heat recovery not in series to maximize volume and temperature of hot water generation (too much water and insufficient hot water)

Ÿ Evaporator surface condenser cooling water not used efficiently (low temperature and excessive volume)

Ÿ Oversized and fouled heat exchangers and condensers resulting in low U-values (poor heat transfer)

Ÿ Inefficient batch digester blow heat recovery (tuning, VFD, heat rejection rate, etc.)

Ÿ Brown and bleached washer shower flow rates not based on dilution factor control

Ÿ Inefficient use of hot water, filtrates, and whitewater on bleach plant washer showers and repulper dilution

Ÿ Excessive wire cleaning and water doctor shower water on brown stock and bleach plant washers

Ÿ Inefficient wintertime waste heat recovery Ÿ Waste heat recovery not optimized to provide hot water to paper mill

Ÿ Poor steam stripping column performance requiring high total and effective steam ratio; ineffective use of reflux condenser heat recovery and stripped condensate reuse

Ÿ Low temperature heat sources going to mid-temperature (135 to I50°F) and hot water tanks

North Carolina State University developed and maintains a website that tracks energy policies and incentive programs in the United States: www.dsireusa.org. Energy programs and incentives can be accessed by entering the zip code of pulp and paper mill sites. While the Focus on Energy program only provides incentives for Wisconsin participating utility customers, the pulp and paper team is available for energy evaluations in other states.

Conclusion There are opportunities to reduce energy use in all pulp and paper mills. Energy use varies widely between mills producing similar grades. The guidelines and suggestions in this article can help mills benchmark energy consumption and identify improvement opportunities. Mill operating personnel often do not fully understand process interactions and their impact on energy consumption. Focused energy evaluations can identify operating changes and capital projects with fast payback to reduce energy use. E•V•E•N•T Technologies and Ideas Together to Improve Mills' Operations Mr KS Kasi Viswanathan, Chairman, PaperTech in his address to PaperTech 2018 underlined the necessity of attaining the world-class

Mr KS Kasi Viswanathan

standards in mills' operations, which can enable mills to perform better and conserve more. He said, “There are only a few mills in India who are closer to the world-class operations in terms of capacity, quality, and energy conservation and are becoming greener day by d ay. A l t hou gh t he re have b e e n improvements done by the Indian mills over the last few years, we still need to do much in terms of making our operations at par with the international standards.” Mr. Viswanathan suggested that the Indian mills need to create forums of experienced workmen in order to collate and organize ideas which can result in innovations. “In order to make the mill engineers, operators, and managers better informed, we need to create forums. In those forums, we can discuss and find innovative ways to tackle the challenges. There are basically two ways in which the mills can see the improvements. The first one is the new technologies – even smaller mills can see a quantum jump in the operational efficiencies by implementing new technologies. The other one is gathering small ideas of all the employees and technicians to form bigger workable ideas, which can go a long way in improving operations,” he said.

Mr. Viswanathan also said that mills' survival would become a great concern if they are environmentally compliant. He said, “If you are going to fight for a commodity which is for the public use (like water), you are bound to lose. It is our responsibility to reduce the water consumption and maximize the recycling. Such water conservation practices are not only cost-effective, but are also necessary for us to comply with regulations in place. Whenever there is an upheaval regarding the water usage, the first one to get affected is the industry. We need to be prepared for such inevitable situations. “Independent of Papertech, CII has worked hard to develop a 'GreenCo' rating program which helps various industries including the pulp and paper industry to become green. The modules of GreenCo are energ y efficiency (electrical and thermal), water conservation, renewable energy, GHGs mitigation, waste management, product stewardship, green supply chain, and life cycle assessment. As a part of the program, we also go to our vendors and customers and make them aware of what the program intends to achieve.”

Competitiveness is the Whole Purpose of PaperTech Mr. Sanjay Singh, Divisional Chief Executive, ITC, also the Co-Chairman of PaperTech, emphasized the absolute self-reliance in terms of technology and world-class operations, which would not make us dependent on extraneous factors. He said, “This is a favorable time for the Indian paper

Mr. Sanjay Singh

industry. Whatever is happening in the industry is not because of what we did; it is because of what countries like China and Vietnam have done, or even what the USA is doing. Their actions are helping us reap profits indirectly.” He further said, “Wastepaper ban in China has made many industries shut the operations. This has resulted in an increased demand for the pulp. The hike in pulp demand has also increased the cost of pulp. Consequently, the prices of paper grades have also shot up. In the last 1.5 years, prices of all paper products have increased. Besides, because of the trade war between the US and China, the container prices from here to China have drastically reduced. As a whole, not only you are getting a higher price for the paper, you are also getting lower cost of shipping to China.” Mr. Singh sounded a cautionary note saying, “This situation however is not going to last for too long. We shouldn't forget that we belong to an industry which has always been struggling for survival. In fact, many mills have shut in the last few years. They are now getting revived because of the good prices. The whole purpose of the PaperTech is to bring competitiveness in the industry. It has been 9 years that we are doing PaperTech. We are telling people to reduce energy and water consumption because statutory norms in India are becoming stronger. To survive, the industry will have to manage its consumption parameters well.”

Following China, India May Ban Wastepaper Import Mr. P.S. Patwari, Executive Director, Emami Paper Mills said, “The total newsprint consumption is around 2.8 million tonnes. We however produce 1.2 million tonnes and balance demand is met through imports. The main feature of the newsprint industry is it being a 100 percent eco-friendly industry. Besides, we are creating regular direct and indirect employment throughout our industry. There

are lakhs and lakhs of rag pickers, who are dependent on or engaged in the collection of wastepaper. Generally, people say that we recycle 30-35 percent of paper or even less than that. But in the case of old newspapers, almost 90 percent of them are being collected and 70-80 percent is supplied to the industry. The reader of the paper is reading a newspaper free of cost. Whatever he is paying for the newspaper, he is getting back by selling old newspapers. “The growth of the newsprint industry is basically dependent on the print media's growth. The print media in our country is growing at more than 10-12 percent per annum. The regional language print media are also growing. If print media is growing, newsprint demand has to grow, minimum with 57 percent per annum.” Mr. Patwari also discussed some of the global events and actions which altered the domestic production landscape. He said, “The ban by the Chinese authorities on the import of inferior grades of paper about 9 months back because of the environmental reasons is going to stay. They have rather announced that old wastepaper which they are importing in China will be completely banned by March 2020. That is a good lesson and information coming for us as well. We can make our strategies accordingly. “Because of the ban of inferior grade wastepaper, more than 2 million tonnes of newsprint capacity in China has been shut. The shortage is also felt by the packaging paper industry. The grades like kraft paper and duplex board are being exported to China. Earlier,

“There are some serious concerns as well. The surplus inferior quality wastepaper, which was supplied to China, is finding its way to India and this is a serious issue. We should be cautious and follow the rules and regulations by our authorities. We might otherwise end up worsening our situation. China has put the ban in a planned manner. They have given prior intimation to the industry; but here in India, it may happen suddenly. So be prepared!”

fewer quality complaints. This is our role as a trader in the paper industry to bridge the gap between the manufacturer and the consumer.”

Mr. B. R. Rao, Vice President, FPTA said, “There are 36 associations of traders all over India with a total strength of 10,000 people. We are working as a chain between the paper industry and the consumers. Also, we all know how difficult it is to make paper with the available raw material and make it both efficient and economical at the same time. But as a trader or a wholesaler, we have a different level of operation. We see that the product goes to the right candidate and there are

He added, “On August 1, 2018, as we celebrated the Paper Day, the 36 of our associations organized different activities which proved a grand success. We distributed 3,000 t-shirts among all the paper traders which they wore on the Paper Day. Whenever they were going to a program, a slogan 'Love paper' was printed on the badges and the t-shirts. We have started printing this slogan on a number of notebooks as well. We have also released a stamp on the paper day in order to make the Govt. accept August 1 as the paper day.” n

Spotlight on Wastepaper and Agro Based Paper Mills

IPPTA's zonal seminar gave some highly optimistic yet provisional figures about the Indian paper industry, pegging the total paper production in the country at 24 million tonnes annually and the total production share of wastepaper based mills at 70 percent! With the largest production share, the wastepaper based mills also share a big onus to improve quality, become competitive, and conserve environment.

PPTA conducted its zonal seminar and workshop on August 17-18, 2018 at Muzaffarnagar, UP with 'Developing Efficient and Environment Friendly Operation at Waste Paper & Agro-based units' as central theme. The seminar's thrust on export and value addition is quite timely when the industry is driving maximum efforts in increasing its export volume with consistent quality upgrade. With inaugural session setting the tone of the seminar, panel discussions and technical sessions covered many salient topics in depth. The panel discussion revolved around the

E•V•E•N•T opportunities and challenges for the paper industry owing to the ban of plastic in certain states. Three technical sessions took up various specialized and technical subjects in order to find answers for sustainable and optimized operations in various areas of a paper unit, covering economic sustainability, statistical approaches, and better environment.

Correct Production Figures, a Problem While delivering his welcome address, Mr. Pankaj Agarwal, MD, Bindals Duplex Ltd tried to highlight the inadequacy of data related to current status of the Indian paper industry, especially the total production figures.

Mr. Pankaj Agarwal

As per his personal makeshift calculation, he quoted quite an optimistic figure for India's total paper production, i.e. 24 million tonnes per annum, which is way above the official data doing rounds for quite some time. Providing ground for his calculation, Mr. Agarwal convincingly said, “There is no relevant data available in India which shows the accurate paper production figures. I however have tried to conclude some figures after a l o t o f re s e a rc h . Mu z a f f a r n a g a r produces around 1.5 million TPA of paper. Looking at the expansions, this figure might become 2 million TPA within 4 years. The total paper production in Uttar Pradesh is no less than 3.6 million TPA. This figure reaches over 5.5 million TPA if we include Uttarakhand's production as

well. Considering the entire North India, the paper production approximates 10 million TPA. Regions like Vapi and Morbi respectively produces 1 million TPA, slated to increase further amid vigorous expansion efforts in the region. My calculation reaches around 24 TPA for the total paper production in India if I keep including other regions in likewise manner.” Outlining the data insufficiency, he further said, “There also is a confusion regarding the type of paper mills in India and their production. With the help of experts, I have arrived at some figures, which shows wastepaper mills having the largest production share with 70 percent, followed by woodbased mills with 20 percent and agrobased with 10 percent.” He also said that India imports about 10 million TPA of wastepaper and urged IPPTA and CPPRI to give their recommendations to the Govt. for promoting agro-based industry to avoid the wastepaper imports. “The promotion of the agrobased industry alone can change the face of the Indian paper industry. The farming community might see a threefold increase in their remuneration if we can find optimum use of the agrowaste,” he added. There are around 30 paper mills in Muzaffarnagar making grades like kraft paper, duplex board, writingprinting paper, newsprint, and tissue. Mr. Agarwal said, “People often ask me why there are so many mills in Muzaffarnagar. One of the reasons is that the mill owners in Muzaffarnagar maintain a transparency with each other. They come forward, discuss problems, and resolve issues for one another. The water quality and

availability may be other reasons. Mill owners in the region have together done investments to the tune of INR 100 Cr in their respective plants for the adoption of better technologies.”

Technology, Quality, and Competitiveness: Critical for Export Capability Delivering his keynote address, Mr. R.C. Rastogi, Chairman & Managing Director, Khatema Fibres Ltd stressed the need for the Indian paper industry to realize its export potential. Citing the example of recent flurry of export to China, he said, “Due to the ban on the wastepaper imports by China, acute shortage of the fiber has surfaced in the country.

Mr. R.C. Rastogi

What we are seeing today is an opportunity for India. Our country is now exporting its paper to China, something which we have never thought of before. We just need to realize our export potential and explore more. Mr. Rastogi referred to the healthy balance sheets of the paper industry worldwide including India and exhorted his manufacturer colleagues not to become complacent by looking

“The industry is in buoyant phase and everyone seems to be making profit at this point. We must however concentrate more on our technological improvements in this phase in spite of being just happy about it.”

at profits they are making today. “The industry is in buoyant phase and everyone seems to be making profit at this point. We must however concentrate more on our technological improvements in this phase in spite of being just happy about it. We must figure out ways to export paper to the neighboring countries. All the people engaged in the pulp and paper industry must take this opportunity to improve the profitability and gain the technological edge to remain competitive in the world market,” he said. Mr. Rastogi also emphasized the need to adopt a holistic approach when adopting technology instead of going for partial rebuild practice as is the case with most of the Indian paper mills. He said, “As per my years of experience in the industry, I can certainly assert that the Indian papermakers don't adopt the technology in one go; they do it on a piecemeal basis. Moreover, neither the Govt. nor the technology suppliers have supported the idea of adopting the technology in its entirety.” The best papermaking technology must be created at the mills' conception stage by integrating best possible alternatives suited to the objective and purpose of the mill, he said. He further added, “There is no machine manufacturer who can supply for the turnkey project, i.e. right from the wastepaper processing and pulping machinery to paper manufacturing and finishing equipment. Even Voith, which has done many large projects, is not supplying the complete solution. Moreover, technologies of such companies are often out of budget. Even consultants seem to be lacking in knowledge for a turnkey project, most of them giving you partial view on what

an ideal paper mill should look like. There is no one-shop or consultancy firm which can suggest integrated solutions for turkey projects.” Mr. Rastogi stressed the need to attain a quality benchmark in production in order to be internationally competitive. He said that much of the paper produced in India didn't even meet the quality requirement of domestic market. “Muzaffarnagar, Vapi, and many other clusters are making so much paper. However, their qualities even for domestic consumption remain doubtful. We are able to send the paper across the Indian market which is not a mature market and it is looking for something different,” he said. “For instance, none of newsprint consumers are nowadays happy unlike the days when only few mills like TNPL were making quality newsprint. The prices of newsprint have become quite high due to cost economics, making us more opportunistic and less competitive. Today even mills not having adequate newsprint making capability are manufacturing it. This is not how we would become competitive,” he added. Taking the quality and technology issue further, Mr. Rastogi elaborated that how holistic or a whole view of technology is crucial in order to produce right quality on sustained basis and become competitive. Partial or segmented technology rebuilds and installations are never as much quality oriented as they are operational survival. “We often complain of not having adequate and quality raw material. How are Indonesia and China able to produce a world-class product despite the raw material crunch? This is because they don't have the habit of installing systems and mills on a

26 | www.papermart.in / August - September 2018

piecemeal basis. We are not going for the world-class technology based paper mill. Therefore, when you are making a new investment, go for the world-class technology and equipment,” he said. Mr. Rastogi also told the industry not to expect too much from the government in terms of reforms and enabling legislations, especially on the raw material front. The industry instead should try itself to come over issues, like it is doing in social farm forestry to surmount raw material challenges.

Environment, a Concern for Wastepaper Based Mills Too! Environment and effluent management remained as always the focal point of the address by Mr. Pawan Agarwal, President, IPPTA. Mr. Agarwal, a staunch votary of mill level environmental management, in his presidential address said, “Environment as a topic has been at the forefront of IPPTA for the past 5-6 years. The environmental issue is not limited to Muzaffarnagar and has outreached the Gujarat belt and even the southern part of India.”

Mr. Pawan Agarwal

Bringing the spotlight of environment on wastepaper-based mills, Mr. Agarwal said, “We are making 70 percent of the paper from wastepaper. There is a preconceived notion in our mind – making paper with wastepaper does not cause pollution. This is absolutely a hoax. The plastic in wastepaper is a major concern today. Are you prepared if the govt. decides to

ban the wastepaper import in India? I suppose not! We need to find a solution for the plastics in wastepaper before it's late. Firstly, it is necessary for us to segregate the plastic. Then, we can identify a safe disposal area for it. By doing this, we can save ourselves from being a soft target in the eyes of people, who think we are causing pollution. Also, we need to keep a check on the people, whom we have given responsibility for disposing off the wastes. “I have come to know through some sources that government of India is actually thinking over banning wastepaper import in the country. If such a thing happens, this will come as a big shock to us all. We must think of some technological remedies. Some gasifier technologies for non-recycled plastics have been developed. Energy recovery via gasification of plastics is an emerging conversion technology drawing increasing interest across world for its potential dual benefits of energy recovery and landfill diversion. I request everyone to think about such a technology. Though I firmly believe that we will soon develop some robust technologies, we presently need to take care of the disposal issue.” Mr. Agrawal also raised the issue of effluents and urged the wastepaper based mills also to take utmost care in fulfilling eff luent norms. He said, “Even if we are making paper with wastepaper then also it is not necessary that we are fulfilling the norms of BOD, COD, TDS, and TSS. Do we improve our ETP systems at the same speed at which we are augmenting our production level on yearly basis? How many of us actually go to the ETP daily to inspect its working? We check the paper sample at least 10 times a day. What

about the wastepaper sample? Do we ask for it? Mere thinking will not work and we need to put in some real effort. The technology exchange has become fast. We are well aware of the good ETP systems and must go for it.” Pointing to human resource development suited for mills in present times, Mr. Agarwal said, “We today don't require the skill set which was demanded 5-10 years back. Increasing automation has altered the skill set requirement patterns also. By training the new employees on board in the areas of how automation actually works, we can actually fill up the gap visible in the human resource department of the Indian paper industry.”

is a dire need of investing in R&D for making some really breakthrough technologies needed by us, especially on environment front. I request to CPPRI and IPPTA to put some efforts in that direction for providing solutions that may resolve our real issues.” Mr. Bansal even exhorted the industry to consider this proposal even if it turns out to be a costly affair. “If the solution is expensive, we may recover its cost by adding it to the paper cost. These solutions are much needed especially when the govt. is putting so much pressure and smearing us as polluters of the environment.”

Technology Development is Now a Must!

Mr. Arvind Aggarwal, Managing Director, Paswara Papers said, “If we start paying attention to the way we work and perform our tasks systematically, we can definitely reach heights.

Mr. Rajeshwar Bansal

Mr. Rajeshwar Bansal, Chairman, Maruti Papers Ltd shared a good thought over how this is now essential for the paper industry to invest in developing technology, which could take care of various issues faced by the Indian paper industry. He said, “There

This is because the demand for paper is increasing rapidly. If people in the industry have issues related to export, they can come together and discuss to find solutions. The market for us has become huge and we must try to export maximum amount of our production.”

FPTA

Paper Manufacturers and Traders to Work Together to Harness the Present Growth Phase

FPTA organized its 57th AGM and Conference from August 18-20, 2018 in Kolkata. The conference was inaugurated to a full house represented by traders from every nook and corner of the country. The guest list included representatives from some of the top manufacturers to bring their perspectives to FPTA platform. Both traders and manufacturers agreed that Industry is in growth ascendance and they would need to work in sync in order to make the most out of it. The conference also discussed the global and national paper market scenario and deliberated on how to best position the Indian paper industry to ensure the continued growth momentum.

32 | www.papermart.in / August - September 2018

E•V•E•N•T A Good Year for the Industry Mr. A. Venkat Annamalai, Outgoing President, FPTA inaugurating the Conference said, “The year 2018-19 so far has been a notable year for the paper industry. We saw imports of varieties

Mr. A. Venkat Annamalai

which was not present in the country such as uncoated woodfree paper and cut-sized copier. But during the year itself, we also saw drastic changes such as the soaring international pulp prices and the steeply weakening Indian currency against the US Dollar making imports uncompetitive and causing a downward trend in imports of pulp and such other products which made their way in the country. I however must compliment the fraternity of traders, which has managed the volatile situations with maturity.” Mr. Annamalai stressed at the need to leverage the present growth phase in the industry through fair practices. “The trading fraternity as well as the paper manufacturers will both agree that the paper industry is doing fairly well. We need to make the most of this opportunity and try to make decent margins, which might be little difficult later. The opportunity is agreeable for all of us and we must not indulge in unhealthy competition amongst ourselves. We need to ensure we get fair margin for our work and investments,” he added. “I think now is the time to pull up our socks. If we don't make decent margins now it will become difficult for us later. It is a golden opportunity for us. We should avoid unhealthy competition amongst

ourselves and ensure that we get a fair margin for all our work, investments, and for the risk fraternity key.” Mr. Annamalai lauded the work of FPTA in raising the traders' issues and for its representation to the Govt. on salient issues. He said, “Talking about the activities of FPTA, I think of three Es – eventful, effective, and extraordinary. The FPTA has been eventful because of amazing participation from all our members. With effectiveness I mean our GST representation to the government to get all the paper products under one GST rate. We have expressed to the Finance Minister that the compliance would be better if there is a single GST rate. I am hopeful that this objective would be achieved with the cooperation from the entire paper industry. By extraordinary I mean that we have managed such effective events with the limited resources we have. “We definitely need to convey to the world that paper is not a bad product as is the misconception. We must inform the whole paper industry that we as paper traders are absolutely ready to take this message to a large number of people.”

All Paper Segments Experiencing Good Growth Mr. Aditya V. Agarwal, Director, Emami Group of Companies said, “Paper Traders Association is one of the

Mr. Aditya V. Agarwal

key stakeholders of this industry and their contribution goes a long way in promoting better understanding across the stakeholders associated with this industry. They are representing

their best interest at the right forums. I am delighted to be present here today and be a part of the 57th AGM of FPTA and the centenary celebration of Kolkata Paper Traders Association. “I am sure most of the people have celebrated August 1, 2018, as Paper Day to position and promote paper as the only material that is biodegradable, renewable, recyclable, and sustainable. The reason why I am recalling this event is to clear the myth often being created by certain interest groups that use of paper means cutting of forests. This is not the case at all especially in India because the wood for the manufacturing of paper comes from cultivated trees grown by farmers. There is an all-around positive vibration throughout the paper and wood industry as well as the trade. This cheerful atmosphere shows that the paper as well as the trade industry is after a long run. “All the segments of paper are experiencing good growth both locally and internationally. Amidst this scenario, Emami Paper, a part of the INR 60,000 Cr Emami Group, is well poised to leverage this growth story. We have never compromised on the product quality and the required investments to achieve that. Differentiation, innovation, and automation are the mantras of success. Hence, we went ahead with a diversification into a comparatively new area of consumer packaging board and met every required investment. Our newsprint and packaging board units at Balasore are testimonials of our commitment to raising the quality bar of paper products in India. Such latest trends and state-of-the-art technologies are what the industry demands today. India needs to emerge as one of the front-running nations producing the finest quality of paper and paper products. “We all have to pitch in to achieve this target. This industry is poised to witness a significant growth in the coming years. This growth won't be possible without the cooperation of traders, who are associated with this industry. Let's

E•V•E•N•T strengthen our association and put the best foot forward for a brighter future of the paper industry in India.”

Traders, the Backbone of the Industry Mr. Jyoti Kumar Bajaj, Managing Director, Krishna Tissues said, “The trader-manufacturer partnership in the industry is an enduring one. We will continue to support each other in the years to come. We have learned a

Mr. Jyoti Kumar Bajaj

lot from each other in the time of need and otherwise and this will continue in times to come. The dealers, distributors, and retailers network is extensive and a crucial part of the industry. The traders especially are the backbone of the industry whose role has increased immensely in the present scenario. The traders should bridge the gap between the consumers and the manufacturers by acting as consultants to the consumers on one side and manufacturers for the product development on the other. “It is now the right time for the traders for going into the forward integration as demand for printing and packaging industry is on rise. The printing and packaging industry is growing by leaps and bounds. Simultaneously, the traders can go for the backward integration as well by investing in converting plants for the first delivery of goods to the consumers. Due to recent developments and restrictions imposed by the Chinese Govt., the market for paper and paperboards has opened all over the world. Now traders can reap the benefits of the opportuni-

ties available for exporting to other countries of the world. “The future of the paper and paperboard industry is very bright. At present, the per capita consumption of paper and paperboard in India is around 12 Kg, which is way below the global average of 55 Kg. The Indian paper industry is growing at 6-7 percent year-on-year. The packaging industry is growing at a speed of 22 percent. The export of packaging products has also increased. The projected demand for the paper industry will be 20 million tonnes by 2020. “There are myths surrounding the society regarding the paper. I would like to appeal to the paper manufacturers, traders, converters, publishers, printers, environmentalists, and NGOs to make a collective effort for promoting the paper and advocating the message that paper is biodegradable, recyclable, and eco-friendly. We have to encourage the public to make more use of paper and discourage them to use plastic.”

The Plastic Ban to Surge Paper Consumption Mr. Jaiprakash Narayan, CEO, Century Pulp & Papers said, “Right now India has an overall demand of 21 million tonnes putting together all the segments. We are manufacturing somewhere around 15-16 million tonnes and remaining is getting imported. If you see the present scenario, the global manufacturing cost has gone up due to an excessive rise

Mr. Jaiprakash Narayan

in pulp prices. At the same time, the dollar price has also gone up. The import in the country has reduced. At the same time, export for the manufacturers has become very attractive. There is much unmet demand in the country. As a result, this industry is witnessing a very good time both from the manufacturer's and the trader's perspective. “If you see the future of this industry, we are anticipating that the future of this industry will be very good. However, it has got certain challenges. Due to the environmental pressure, not only in India but across the globe, people are moving towards biodegradable substitutes. The demand for plastic is around 30 million tonnes. If gradually the plastic goes off, approximately 40 percent of the plastic will be substituted by the paper based alternatives. Considering these factors, we are anticipating that the growth and future scenario of the paper industry including the traders will be very good. “However, this future will be good only if manufacturers will take their role properly. We need to work with the latest technology, adopt the sustaina b l e p ro ce s s e s, a n d u t i l i ze t h e resources in a way that we can manufacture the product at global standards and at global manufacturing cost. If that be the scenario, I think manufacturers will be able to supply good products at a competitive price to all our traders. If the equation meets, I am sure the future of the manufacturers and traders will be very good. “There is a new segment coming with the rise in the use of biodegradable products, i.e. tableware manufacturing. The pulp consumption is going up day by day. There are a lot of inquiries where people are asking for biodegradable pulp, especially agro-based pulp, for putting a machine to produce tableware coming. This product is related to mass consumption and if it comes into the market, it can be a new

E•V•E•N•T variant for the paper industry. This is possible and achievable only when we start connecting paper with innovation.”

the paper industry. I want to convey my feelings to IPMA that they must remain in association with FPTA and actively participate in such programs. The traders have good interactions at the

consumer level and they also try to interact at the industry level. “I would also like to tell you that the industry is in talks with the government regarding the use of the degraded forest lands. In India, as per some estimate, about 3-4 million hectares of land are barren and not to put to any use. IPMA has proposed to the government that these lands can be given on lease to the paper industry for plantation purposes. The paper industry at its own cost would be planting trees which will help the industry as well as the ecology. In our country, several states have taken this step and other states would follow soon. “The growth of the paper industry is around 6-7 percent, meaning an additional need of 7-8 lakh tonnes of capacity every year. To create such a capacity, we will be requiring an investment of around INR 5,000-7,000 Cr annually. We don't know how the things will shape. Moreover, we can expect a modest growth if more states decide to ban plastics. The industry now has to think more pragmatically to

When I compare the paper trade with the trade of other products, I feel the trading skill, the ingenuity, and the alertness which a paper trader requires are not required in many of the commodities. There are various categories of paper with each one having many sizes and multiple grammages. The paper may be a small product but it is a complex one and the trader has to deal with so many such products.” Mr. S.K. Goenka, New President, FPTA thanked everyone present at the conference and said, “I would like to thank Mr. Annamalai, the outgoing President of FPTA, and all the members of FPTA. It is an honor for me to be chosen as the President of FPTA. I request the paper traders' community to continue with their support to FPTA so that we all together can take the Indian paper trade to a new level. I dedicate my coming years in the service of FPTA.”

ccording to the company, the new industry-specific solution improves the profitability of pulp and paper operations by delivering more accurate and timely supply chain material inventory data while improving site operations and safety. Kespry's automated solution backed by comprehensive support and training provides the ability to track and manage supply chain inventories with on-demand drone flights every day, week or month.

Kespry's automated solution backed by comprehensive support and training provides the ability to track and manage supply chain inventories with on-demand drone flights every day, week or month.

N•E•W•S Kespry says pulp and paper companies often face several issues when it comes to inventory and supply chain logistics. Infrequent surveys of wood chip piles and round wood inventory cannot provide the daily or weekly data required to optimize production in a business that often adapts to demand on a daily basis. Meanwhile, using expensive third-party surveyors limits the frequency of inventory data capture due to the high cost of their services, says Kespry. “Measuring chip piles at a pulp mill have always been a challenge. In the past, a team of surveyors would climb onto the chip pile and arrive at a manual measurement,” says Mitch Dunlop, accounting manager at Celgar, a North American pulp and paper organization. “This method is slow, poses safety concerns and is not very accurate. Hiring a contractor for monthly surveys of the chip pile was not economically feasible. Having the Kespry drone on-site, we can survey the chip pile every month and we have more accurate inventory volume reporting.”

Kespry says it eliminates these issues by providing production plant managers with highly accurate survey and inventory data across both production facility and round wood storage sites – data that matches the update frequency required to optimize profitability of supply chain. In turn, site controllers are able to reconcile inventory data with accurate survey data, operation teams can optimize on-site logistics and schedules to accommodate production demand, and supply managers are able to better improve customer material handling with real-time inventory assessments, the company explains. “Paper production plants can process millions of cubic meters of wood material annually, and tracking such a high volume of inventory can be challenging,” notes George Mathew, CEO and chairman of Kespry. “Moving away from expensive third-party surveyors by having an accurate drone solution available to fly on-demand results in more precise and frequent inventory assessments and, ultimately, improved profitability.” n

Swedish Research Breaks New Ground – Closer to a Commercial Paper Battery BillerudKorsnäs and Uppsala University are making paper batteries a reality, paving the way for energy storage in packaging materials. August 12, 2018

B

illerudKorsnäs and researchers at Uppsala University have together taken an important step towards the future's paper batteries. Together they have taken basic research based on pure cellulose from algae and developed it to work with the same type of fiber that BillerudKorsnäs usually uses to manufacture packaging material. This development opens up for both inexpensive and eco-friendly batteries. The long-term aim is to enable large-scale production and the future use of paper batteries for applications in areas such as smart packaging.

Technology for Large-Scale Production Processes The development work is being carried out by one of Sweden's foremost research teams under Maria Strömme, collaborating with BillerudKorsnäs, as a leading company in the development of sustainable packaging technology, in a completely new form. “What's special in this case is the model for collaboration between BillerudKorsnäs and Uppsala University that has resulted in technology adapted to large-scale production processes. We're combining the deep theoretical expertise of the researchers with our understanding of innovation and production technology. By successfully creating a joint platform, we can focus our work on the future, on creating an advanced product that can still be produced in an effective way,” says Lars Sandberg, Project Manager for innovation at BillerudKorsnäs.

44 | www.papermart.in / August - September 2018

The long-term aim is to enable large-scale production and the future use of paper batteries for applications in areas such as smart packaging.

Smart, Connected Packaging In the long term, the paper battery opens up possibilities for developing packaging that is both smart and more sustainable. Small paper batteries with sensors can in the future open up for packaging that can be traced through the entire transport chain. This includes, for example, packaging that measures temperature or position in real time and provides information on what is happening with an item during transport.

N•E•W•S A paper battery entails many new ways of using packaging and can thus offer exciting opportunities for the packaging industry and BillerudKorsnäs customers that wish to establish systems that safeguard quality and delivery reliability. For example, a light sensor along with a BillerudKorsnäs paper battery could provide information on where in the transport chain a product disappeared from its packaging. With electrodes based on cellulose from wood fiber, the ambition is that in the future, it will be possible to recycle batteries along with their boxes and make them into new boxes or paper batteries.

“The paper battery is a key piece of the puzzle in efforts to produce smart packaging that requires small, sustainable power sources. By enabling this type of sustainable packaging, the work on the paper batter y is fully in line with BillerudKorsnäs' vision of challenging conventional packaging for a sustainable future. Storing energy in paper instead of in lithium batteries, for example, allows for bio-based batteries that can form part of a circular system, which provides major sustainability benefits,” says Magnus Wikström, technical director at BillerudKorsnäs. n

N•E•W•S already been designed to enable a major extension by moving the boiler side wall and widening the heating surfaces of the superheater, boiler generation bank, and economizers. The boiler extension by moving the side wall allows optimum flue gas flux before and after the rebuild, which has great benefits compared to traditional technology for expanding the recovery boiler by moving its front wall. The total increase of the boiler width was 3.8 meters. In addition to boiler enlarge-

ment, one additional ESP (electrostatic precipitator) chamber and feed water pump were added. The mill expansion was one of the largest industrial investments in Sweden and the largest ever in northern Sweden. SCA Östrand is doubling its annual production capacity from 430,000 to 900,000 tons, thereby becoming the largest mill in the world for softwood kraft pulp. n

Asia Pulp & Paper Joins MERA to Protect Coastal Ecosystem and Combat Climate Change MERA plans to restore 500ha of mangroves in three areas around Jakarta Bay; Muara Angke in North Jakarta, Muara Gembong in Bekasi, and Muasa Cisadane in Tangerang. August 13, 2018

T

he Mangrove Ecosystem Restoration Alliance (MERA) is a national platform for stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of the protection and restoration of mangrove ecosystems across the archipelago. Launched by Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN) and the Jakarta Natural Resources Conser vation Agenc y of the Ministr y of Environment and Forestry in 26 July 2018, the goal of MERA is to reduce the vulnerability of coastal communities, natural resources and vital assets by 2022, by promoting effective management and implementing strategies to conserve and restore mangrove landscapes. In the first phase, MERA plans to restore 500ha of mangroves in three areas around Jakarta Bay; Muara Angke in North Jakarta, Muara Gembong in Bekasi, and Muasa Cisadane in Tangerang. Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) signed an agreement to join MERA to support the conservation and restoration of Indonesia's mangrove ecosystems. As part of the agreement, APP will commit IDR 4.2 billion (USD 300,000) to the MERA programme over five years. Mangrove forests are an important part of the Indonesian landscape, playing a vital role in combating climate change, protecting shorelines from erosion and maintaining wildlife diversity. Mangrove forests also provide socioeconomic benefits, supporting fisheries, tourism and other economic activity. Across Indonesia, mangroves are estimated to store more than 3.1 billion tonnes of carbon. According to CIFOR, halting mangrove degradation and destruction in Indonesia could contribute substantially to Indonesia's emissions reduction targets by 2020, equivalent to eliminating 40 million cars on the road. Ms. Elim Sritaba, Director for Sustainability & Stakeholder Engagement at APP said, “As a forestry business, APP understands the long-term value of protecting and conserving critical natural landscapes. By joining the Mangrove Ecosystem Restoration Alliance, we are contributing not only to the preservation of valuable ecosystems, but also this is

important as this initiative is closely aligned with our sustainability vision.” APP's Sustainability Roadmap Vision 2020 lays out specific commitments in support of reforestation, conservation and biodiversity, as well as climate change. Since 2013, it has invested heavily in these areas and has worked to identify and protect more than 600,000ha of natural forest across its supplier concessions. By supporting projects like MERA, APP is able to extend its sustainability efforts beyond its concession borders. “Indonesia has almost a quarter of world's mangrove forests. These mangrove forests are especially important to protect because they provide services for coastal protection, nursery and spawning ground for marine biota, migratory bird sanctuary, carbon sequestration and community livelihood. Now they are threatened by unintegrated coastal development and aquaculture. It is a monumental task, but through MERA, we are able to bring together support from national stakeholders, including the private sector, to protect and restore these ecosystems,” said Rizal Algamar, the Chairman of the Board of Management of YKAN. n

Increase in Paper Demand Cheers up the Industry Policy changes in China and global trade issues have helped the domestic paper sector with buoyant prices, steady demand, and growing exports, according to industry experts. August 31, 2018

T

hough, the industry officials add a note of caution on the cyclical nature of the industry, demand is expected to be steady and there are opportunities for import substitution of about INR 10,000 crore in newsprint per annum. Sanjay Singh, Divisional Chief Executive of ITC-PSPD, said, “The performance of the paper industry lately has brought the smile back on various stakeholders, including owners due to demand growth and firm prices.” “The best part is this is aided by what China, Vietnam and the US have done with the paper sector back home. The tightening of wastepaper demand had boosted the demand for pulp that goes into making of the paper. This has jacked up prices of pulp and this in turn has resulted in prices of paper and finished products going up,” he said.

save about INR 10,000 crore every year.” The company executives were speaking on the sidelines of Papertech 2018, an industry conference.

“The paper sector is doing well in the past one and half years and the trade war between the US and China has aided this growth. But we need to factor in the cyclical nature of the paper sector,” he cautioned. The industry is globally competitive but more needs to be done in automation and extensive use of data for greater efficiencies, he said.

K.S. Kasi Vishwanathan, Chairman of Papertech 2018 and MD Seshasayee Paper and Boards, said, “The drop in production in the US, Sweden and China have added to the export demand, even though it is relatively small at about 1.5-2 million tonnes. Of the 17 million tonnes installed capacity, the utilization is about 85-90 per cent and capacity addition will be needed.”

PS Patwari, Executive Director of Emami Paper Mills and President of INMA, said, “The country's demand for newsprint is estimated to be about 2.8 million tonnes but production is about 1.2 million tonnes, and the balance is imported. If we produce all that we consume domestically, we would be able to

“Some of the paper companies, including Seshasyee, Emami, Century, and Orient Paper are all in the process of either adding or have added fresh capacities. This augurs the industry well which is growing at 7-8 per cent or at the pace of the country's GDP,” he said. n

There are opportunities for import substitution of about INR 10,000 crore in newsprint per annum.

BILT Outlines Plan to Invest Rs 125 Cr in AP Rayon unit As per the agreement, BILT plans to invest Rs 125 crore for doing modifications in plant and machinery and upgradation and 10 per cent of this investment will be extended as investment subsidy by the State. September 5, 2018

allarpur Industries Ltd is set to revive the ailing rayon and paper grade sick AP Rayon unit located at Kamalapur in Warangal district of Telangana. Backed by a slew of incentives cleared by the Telangana Chief Minister, K Chandrasekhar Rao, BILT has outlined plans to invest Rs. 125 crore for reviving the unit, which has been closed from April 2014.

The Government after careful examination of the issue sanctioned a slew of incentives as the livelihoods of 750 worker families and hundreds of families indirectly are dependent on the factory. This development comes within months of JK Paper Ltd bagging the mandate to revive the sick Sirpur Paper Mills Ltd, following an NCLT order and supported by a package of incentives by the Telangana Government.

A consolidated subsidy of Rs. 21 Crore per year for seven years will be released towards supply of pulp wood on the same terms and conditions agreed earlier. The unit will be extended a maximum subsidy of Rs 9 crore per annum for seven years.

N•E•W•S In an order issued, Jayesh Ranjan, P r i n c i p a l S e c r e t a r y, I n d u s t r i e s , Telangana, said that following the closure of the unit, the State Government had agreed to provide a package of incentives worth about Rs 192 crore spread over a seven-year period. In spite of it, the unit could not be revived.

With the BILT management coming forward after the State initiated moves to revive the unit at any cost, including exploring the possibility of handing over the unit to ITC for revival, a new package was announced. Accordingly, a consolidated subsidy of Rs. 21 Crore per year for seven years will

be released towards supply of pulp wood on the same terms and conditions agreed earlier. The unit will be extended a maximum subsidy of Rs 9 crore per annum for seven years and it would be extended a subsidy of Rs. 1,000 per tonne for an average annual consumption of 1,50,000 tonnes over seven years. n

Sharp Rise in Paper Stock Price Anticipating Govt.’s Anti-Dumping Duty The increase in the paper stock prices is because the paper industry expects the Govt. to levy anti-dumping duty soon as the investigations are in advanced stage. September 1, 2018

T

he stock price of JK Paper and International Paper APPM shot up 61.8 percent and 57.4 percent, respectively, to Rs 179.6 and Rs 501.3. The other paper companies seeing a significant rise include West Coast Paper, N R Agarwal Industries, Seshasayee Paper and Emami Paper Mills. The industry sources attributed the sharp rise in stock prices to the expectation that the Govt. may go ahead with levying antidumping duty to restrain the continuous increase in paper imports in the country much affecting the domestic paper industry. “The Directorate General of Foreign Trade had initiated investigation on import of paper from ASEAN (Association of Southeast Nations) under the free trade agreements (which India has signed with the trade bloc). This had led to a sharp increase in import of paper over the past few years. The investigations started in November last year and (should) take nine to 12 months. There is an expectation that the government will impose anti-dumping duty(ADD). The restriction will result in a shortage and, thus, price increases. This is set to help improve the margins of domestic mills,” said a senior industry official. Official data showed the country's total import of paper and paperboard more than trebled to nearly 1.9 million tonnes (worth USD 1.5 billion) in 2017-18 from a little over 0.5 million tonnes in 2010-11. Import from ASEAN rose 42 percent in these seven years. “Paper import has been rising consistently due to ever-increasing demand from local consumers,” says Rohit Pandit, secretary-general, Indian Paper Manufacturers Association. The Union ministry of commerce and industry said in early November last year that it had initiated an investigation on uncoated copier paper import from Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore, based on complaints from Indian manufacturers. A similar notification issued in late January stated the ministry

had initiated investigations on an ADD for coated paper import from China, the European Union and America. Looking at the likely coming shortage, Indian mills had raised their product prices. “Prices of all varieties — newsprint, writing and printing paper, packaging and specialty paper — have gone up by 5-7 percent this calendar year, primarily because of the China factor and a sudden upsurge in consumer demand,” said Saurabh Bangur, Vice-Chairman, West Coast Paper. Last year, China had banned import of mixed paper waste and this had significant impact on the global market. China has substantially raised its import of pulp, leading to a spike in pulp prices. Pulp is a substitute for waste paper and its major exporters —Indonesia, Malaysia, Chile – have diverted theirs to China at a higher price. n

Along with producing pulp for use in papermaking, the mill will produce environmentally friendly biopolymers, which can be used on roads, in animal feed and more. n

Graphic Packaging to Buy Letica Foodservice Assets for USD 95 Million The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2018. August 28, 2018

G

raphic Packaging Holding Company announced that its subsidiary, Graphic Packaging International, LLC, has reached an agreement to acquire substantially all the assets of the foodservice business of Letica Corporation, a subsidiary of RPC Group PLC for USD 95 million, subject to standard closing conditions and regulator y review. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2018. Letica Foodservice is focused on the production of paperboard-based cold and hot cups and cartons for the growing foodservice market in North America. The company operates two world class foodservice converting facilities in Clarksville, Tennessee and Pittston, Pennsylvania. The business generated USD 110 million in revenue and converted approximately 40 thousand tons of solid bleached sulfate (SBS) paperboard in the twelve months ended

6/30/2018. Synergies from the acquisition will be driven by the integration of additional SBS paperboard tons, lower logistics costs, and other cost efficiencies. On a post-synergy basis, the EV/EBITDA multiple for this transaction is expected to be approximately 6.0X. "We are excited to announce the acquisition of the Letica Foodservice assets as it extends our leading position in the growing paperboardbased foodservice market in North America," said President and CEO Michael Doss. "The transaction will further diversify our customer base, enhance our geographic footprint, and provide needed capacity to meet the incremental demand for paper cups resulting from the ongoing shift out of polystyrene foam. “The transaction is consistent with the strategy we outlined after the combination with the SBS mill and foodservice assets that closed on January 1, 2018, specifically, our intent to grow our foodservice business organically and through acquisitions and drive higher integration levels for our SBS mills." n
